Hey Doug! September is our usual for fist snow, but it all depends on
where/how you measure. We've had snow at 13,000+ ft. on the Peak a few
times this summer. But as far as where I live and ride, latter half of
September. But I won't get snowed off the trails usually until November or
December, though it gets more challenging. Helps to be stupid. Grin.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-20 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Congrats Sean!

Like I said, a bike that makes one smile (and remember the smile!) is a
great thing... I am envious of your chance to ride a Cheviot before
ordering. Not that I have any doubts but it would have been nice.

My build should end up very close to yours, Tubus rear rack, Albatross
bars, etc. I have a Haulin' Colin front rack that might work and will be
good for experimenting, otherwise it will be a Mark's like yours. And I
agree with Joe that the grey makes it possible to do a lot of subtle (or
not) things with color and accents.

Anyway, congratulations! May the frames arrive quickly, at least at the
perfect time, and be destined for great rides and fun.

I will say I think I am ahead of you on the mixte issue! I ride a yellow
Brompton folding bike a lot, for commuting, for errands, for fun, etc. and
with that, any sense of being seen as 100% normal faded some time ago. But
people see how useful it is, how much fun is possible, what change can look
like and it all works out well, mostly. :>)

Enjoy the new (future) bike and ride!

Bob

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2016-08-20 Thread Philip Kim
These tires are expensive but fast. Corners like you might expect from a bald
tire though I don't push it. I think it might be a diff story if there were
actually wide 26 rim brake rims for these tires. Most of them are in the 17-20
internal width range. Grip is pretty decent, but Thunder Burts they are not. I
view them as plusher road tires. If I did gravel or off road, I would choose
Thunder Burts or something else.

I sold the standards to "upgrade" to ELs. So far don't think EL's are worth the
price. Was just in G and got standards to put on once I wear through the ELs.
Same amount of tread, walls are thinner, more difficult to seat the bead
tubeless. Tread life is less of a worry than sidewall damage.

If you are value-oriented or prioritize grip, there are some better tires, but
if you wanna go fast these are the way to go.

I'm 60/40 "in" right now. I figure if I roll out by 7:30 or so that I can
(maybe) get a quick few hours of riding in before the rain really comes.
Haven't looked into bailouts to the shorter routes, but that's likely a
possibility if things get hairy, too.

Plus, I just reverted to my trusty ol' fenders and Jack Browns on my Sam for
the ride, so it'd be a shame to just take 'em off again with nothing to show
for it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-20 Thread SeanMac
I wanted to again thank everyone for their comments about the Rivendell
Cheviot. I'm happy to say that I did finally pull the trigger - a few days
ago I put a deposit down on a Cheviot! I decided to go with the grey color
- 60 cm (my pbh is 86. I rode a 60 Cheviot a few weeks ago and Riv HQ and
really felt comfortable on it). I'm really excited.

I had a hard time choosing between the orange and the grey frame. I really
like the orange color. In the end, however, I decided that the grey color
would be a bit more understated - which is probably good for a guy who
still is not 100 % comfortable about the mixtie thing (I am about 92% okay
with it right now). I live in a town of less than 7,000 people - we have
traffic, but not enough that having a bright colored bike is a huge concern.

I plan to use Albatross bars, Brooks B 17 and a front rack (Mark's) and a
rear rack (Tubus) from a Trek 520 that I now use as my townie. I also hope
that I can use the wheels from that bike - they are DT Swiss touring
wheels. I ordered a new front and rear derailer (Shimano CX 70 for the
front and Altus for the rear) and a Sugino XD2 wide/low crank.

Again, thanks for all of your help in making this decision.

Sean

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass: reviews? impressions? poetic waxings?

2016-08-20 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I would agree with Gravel & Grind that most designers would be reluctant to
advertise shortcomings. But I was surprised at just how contradictory this
review was to the item description (ie, sales copy) on the Compass website.
Your review in a nutshell: Low mileage, repeated flatting, poor wet weather
handling, but faster. The product blurb:

*Compass tires are designed to offer optimum performance above all. Their
supple casing is key to making these tires roll faster than most. It also
absorbs vibrations and shocks better, making these tires supremely
comfortable. The tire tread was designed to offer optimum cornering
adhesion and precision, both in wet and dry conditions.*

*Despite this focus on performance, Compass tires are sensible everyday
tires. The tread is 3 mm thick in the center to last many miles, unlike
thinner high-performance tires which are best treated as “event” tires. We
at Compass ride our tires year-round on the road, on gravel and in the
city, without any problems and with very, very few flats.*

Maybe there is something about the RTP that makes them different from the
other tires in the lineup? I have heard of a few people that have reported
lots of flats on some of the 700C, but most seem to be reporting results
closer to the ad copy. One theory is that wider tires run with lower
pressures are less susceptible to being pierced. I'm curious because your
experience just seems so far from the feedback to this point. More than
curious, since I will be running these again soon. During the initial run,
I did not have enough mileage, nor did I ride them in rain or wet, to have
an opinion or experience on any of the above parameters, though I liked the
road feel.

Re: [RBW] Re: RB-1 tire clearence and rear spacing

2016-08-20 Thread James Warren
The 1992 RB-1 is very nice with Roly Poly tires.

I would guess that in 1992 and 1993, the clearance did not get tighter.

I know the '91 and '90 would be similar to the '92. I can't speak to years
prior, because the geometry of RB-1's was changed after '89, and the RB-1 we
usually talk about had the geometry of 1990 through 1994.

If you don't know the year, do you have any color details of the one you're
getting?

2016-08-20 Thread Patrick Shea
Thanks for the info! The RB-1 seller got back to me and said the bike was
last used with 10-speed Dura Ace. He echoed what Jack said, that the rear
end had plenty of clearance for 28s. I feel like I'm going backwards,
frame-wise, but my '92 RB-1 was a bike I never should have gotten Big Ideas
about. I had a messenger/welder remove the braze-ons and install track ends
which meant a homestyle repaint. Previous to the RB-1, I had turned every
bike I owned into a fixed gear, anyway, so the RB-1 makeover was the
obvious next step.

My plan, now, is to put my impulse buy Record 10-speed long cage/Sugino
triple stuff on this newer almost impulse buy frame and hit the road.

As a retired librarian, I really appreciate this list's collective
knowledge and willingness to share it. Rock on!

[RBW] 26x1.75-2" tire recommendations

2016-08-20 Thread true
I bought a pair or the Tioga Power Blocks on sale
and have only done around 4 rides on them and am very pleased.

I also have Compass Rat Traps and Maxxis DTH tires on other 26" bikes.

I give the edge to the Rat Traps but cannot justify price on all my 26" bikes
but
after riding the Power Blocks a bit don't think I am giving up all that much
for the economies
realized.
They are folding tires, feel pretty supple and roll nicely.

The Maxxis DTH have also proven to be a very nice folding, smooth rolling,
fairly supple tire
and I give 3rd position to them from my experiences
over various 26" tires I have tried. I guesstimate I have 1200 miles or more on
them
and they are wearing great, and only one flat I recall. The DTH have proven to
be very durable to this point.
I sure hope the Power Blocks prove durable as well.
If so I will be ordering another pair.
>From recall both these and the DTH come in at about 550 g's
and are in the $35 per tire price range.

The Rat Traps have maybe 500 to 600 miles on them and are superior, I think,
so supple and seemingly fast rolling from my experience.
They are somewhat lighter than the Power Blocks and DTH tires
but also seem more sensitive to air pressure with my 215 lb heft over the other
two brands.
I have had 3 or 4 flats on them. I would love to try them tubeless.

Safe pedaling,

Paul C in Dallas

[RBW] Re: RB-1 tire clearence and rear spacing

2016-08-20 Thread Jack K
Although advertised as 128mm, my '93 RB-1 came spaced wider than that. A
130mm spaced hub fits with room to spare. Manufacturing variances, no doubt.

Also, the 700x28 Ritchey tires that came stock in '93 are *way* smaller
than any "28" tire I know of today. I actually still have those original
700x28 Tom Slick tires and for giggles installed them on the RB-1 again a
couple of years ago. They are tiny compared to the 700x25 Michelin Pro4
tires on the bike these days (which are famous for measuring bigger than
marked -- the 25's measure 27mm wide on my Open Pro rims). Even larger
tires may fit, lots of room between chainstays and in fork. The pinch point
I see is between the top of tire and bottom of front brake caliper. I'm
using the original Superbe Pro calipers, perhaps some other brake would
give slightly more clearance.

[RBW] Re: ISO: Triple front derailer with flat cages

2016-08-20 Thread Michael Hechmer
Thanks for the compliment. I doubt there is enough flex in this frame.
Oversize steel tubes. With the fenders and racks it weighs in at 48 lbs!
Here's dome pics I posted this morning.
