Re: [RBW] Re: OT PSA: Ibex merino shirts at Sierra Trading Post

2016-10-29 Thread Shawn Granton
Patrick-

Most of the t-shirts look to be a mid weight merino. A few of them are
lighter weight, but these ones are 87% wool/13% nylon. The nylon will help
with durability issues, and it's a low enough percentage to not adversely
affect the benefits of the wool.

I've had a few Ibex tops since the dawn of this decade. One I just retired
because it was well past worn, though I used it as an undershirt, and it
was baselayer weight anyway. Another t-shirt is still going strong, though
it's been darned a bit (mostly due to other unrelated things) so it's also
an undershirt. My polo from that era has a few holes but still is good. So
I've gotten at least six years out of those shirts! Pretty good I think.

I tend to like the Ibex shirts vs Icebreaker as they seem a bit more
durable and have a less "sporty" fit than the Icebreaker stuff. Ibex is
also made (mostly) in the US, though I did see one of the shirts in the STP
sale is made in Canada. (Close enough! ;-) ) Icebreaker's stuff is made
"overseas". Icebreaker stuff tends to be cheaper than Ibex, and there's
always a few things on STP for a low price. And if you are in Portland,
there's an annual warehouse sale where things can be ridiculously cheap.

So I think if you can get a few Ibex shirts, they'll last you a bit. Of
course, washing the merino in cold water gentle cycle with a nice gentle
detergent like Kookaburra and air drying these garments help make them last.

My two cents,
Shawn

Re: [RBW] Re: Since we are talking handlebars...mythbusting and are bars like saddles?

2016-10-29 Thread Eric Karnes
Hi Patrick-

For two years I was a designer and art-director at one of the big national
ad agencies (the specific one will remain nameless here). I was downright
miserable doing that type of work, but was planning on opening my own
design studio in the very near future. So I suffered through with the
knowledge that I was saving the necessary startup money. Nowadays, my
studio does a lot of non-profit work--mostly for museums and performing
arts organizations. It's really interesting work and I enjoy it. And when
it's not quite as interesting, I frame it as repentance for my advertising
days. In addition, I do a good deal of poster work for artists,
craftspeople, and small organizations I really care about. I would
loove to do one for Grant and the folks at Rivendell. And would happily
design it free of charge considering all they've given me in bike-riding
enjoyment. Oh well, maybe one day.

I'll check out the Sayers book! You're actually the second person who's
recommended it in the last year-ish. Looks like it's time to read it.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT PSA: Ibex merino shirts at Sierra Trading Post

2016-10-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Are those the very lightweight wool Ts? If so, how durable are they -- that
is, how well do they stand up to snagging and rubbing, and are they, after
12 months of regular wear, still free of snags, rips, and holes?

I've blown my cycling budget for 2016 -- just bought 2 pr of the 3/4 El
Fitos at 2/3 off -- but for 2017, I wonder if a six pack of those Ts might
not be what I need to replace my aging cotton Ts and polo shirts.

I ordered the Large El Fitos. The Rapha Randonee shorts in M are more than
adequate, but the Ibex fit guide says the that El Fitos are tight, and I
like my cycling bottoms roomy. We'll see.

2016-10-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Kudos! I must try that recipe. I just ordered a cheap, used copy of
Leader's book from Amazon.

I've never made my own starter; must start -- pun intended.

Funny, my results with King Arthur have been much less impressive than with
Red Mill.

[RBW] Re: Since we are talking handlebars...mythbusting and are bars like saddles?

2016-10-29 Thread Eric Karnes

The ‘best’ handlebar exist as much as the best saddle, musician, movie, or
food. That is, there is no such thing as a universal best…as Patrick stated
the term only has objective meaning to the person using it. And if others
are like me, that even depends on what day you ask me. Or what context you
are referring to. Or a hundred other variables.

As for the use of the term in the mainstream marketing of bike products, I
can think of two reasons:

1. As an outright lie to sell more brand new, untested products (can you
tell I hated my two years in advertising?).

2. As a substitute for ‘wildly popular’ or ‘widely admired’ or another more
accurate (but not as sexy) description.

And I think there are smaller outfits like Riv that use the term sincerely,
but are upfront about it being their own belief.

All this to say, if you’re trying to find the right handlebar for you, I
feel for you. It’s a frustrating task. To make everything easier and
cheaper, we want to believe there is a best that we can just order and
install and ride. But there’s no such thing. And like everything, it’s a
process of trial and error.

Ok, enough armchair philosophy. I’m going for a ride in the Wissahickon!

" Is there such a thing as the "best bar"? "

" *the "best" is whatever works for you, the rider."*

I agree with this sentiment. How can a handlebar on its own be
"comfortable", or not comfortable? It is a non-moving piece of metal.

It depends on your setup and how your bike fits, on how you ride, the
cadence you pedal, the route you are riding, and even your fitness and
skill on the bike.

For an individual it can be more measurable than "personal preference," for
example if you find a bar that results in less hand pain and less
numbness...but I think it is almost meaningless to state that a given
handlebar is "comfortable" in and of itself.

Had a few minutes to tidy things up a bit and go for a brief ride...

The Choco bars feel a touch narrow to me and the front end feels almost
squirrelly compared to my other current rides. I'm thinking about mounting
sideways road levers as done on mustache bars. I ended up opting for the
silver shifters on thumbies, as bar ends won't work with my chosen ergon
grips without some filing or odd grip positioning. I also installed the
longer 130-ish stem I had vs. the initial 80-ish stem.

Here's a few shots of the initial build - still to come are cream longboard
fenders and the hub area rack. At some point I need to put a standard pull
rear derailleur on as the only RD I had in stock to install is a reverse
pull and it makes me crazy to have to think about my shifting.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot build in progress

2016-10-29 Thread RonaTD
> How did you run that wire to the tailight?

The wire runs under the down tube, under the bottom bracket and up the back
side of the seat tube. Just above the lateral tube junction it runs over to the
seat stay bridge. Black electrical tape and black zip ties are used to secure
it. Long term, the more elegant solution will be a fender-mounted light, then
running the wire from under the bottom bracket to the fender, then inside the
fender to the light.

Re: [RBW] Rosco v2 has landed!

2016-10-29 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Ack... I sold my Hilsen, not the Hillborne, dang Riv names. I've progressed
in building but not finished yet, though I expect it at least to be
rideable at some point this weekend. I'm stuck on shifter selection at this
point, options are:

1. Silver shifters on Paul thumbies
2. Silver shifters on bar end pods
3. Sunrace clicky thumb shifters

I was set to go with the Sunrace installed upside-down under the Ergon grip
I'm using on the choco norm bar... but then I remembered I wanted the
Sunrace shifters for my Troll. I've always loved bar end shifters, and did
run them on my albatross'd Big Dummy cargo bike several years ago without
issue, but I've heard observations about bar end shifters gettin' in the
way on pulled back bars such as albatross and choco bars It's pretty
easy to put the silver/paul config in place, but they take up a lot of bar
real estate, being a long lever, and I want to leave as much of the choco
bar available for multiple hand positions.

I have two stem lengths to play with - I think an 80-ish and 130-ish - I
have the shorter stem installed now, and I'll see how that goes with this
long pull back bars.

Anyhow - ride expectations: I've owned a Hilsen and a Romulus, and still
own a Hillborne. I'm a huge fan of drop bars, Noodles are my favorite, and
I tend to set them up with long-ish reach and at or a tiny bit above saddle
height. My non-drop bar bikes right now are a Breezer beltway commuter with
Soma Eagle bar set with longer reach and at saddle height, and a Surly
Troll with flat bar set at saddle height... so - I'm not sure what to
expect. I did transport my kids on a Surly Big Dummy a few years back, and
that was the last bike I had that had a pull-back handlebar set above
saddle height - I expect a similar feel with the Rosco, without the super
long tail.

I do intend to put low rider racks (hub area rack) with hub area bags, and
likely a Marks rack with small Wald basket. Generally speaking, with the
handlebars and positioning I've been favoring over the past few years, I've
not enjoyed riding with a basket or rando bag or anything attached to my
bar that's capable of carrying more than my wallet, cell phone and small
snack. I just don't love the handling. I expect the Rosco geometry mated
with the choco bars will work better with a high front load - though I'm
ready to just work with the HAR/HAB combo, no basket.

Last posting before eBay. Serial # RB 038 with 60 cm TT. Usual minor
scratches. Decal is missing from one side of ST, and partially damaged on
the other side. I had it set up as a 650b conversion with plenty of
clearance for 42's. Bonus gift for local pickup!

Asking $750.

"Best" is always "best for me" but different people with similar riding
conditions often prefer similar things -- eg, leather (as opposed to
leather covered) saddles for very long distance riders. There's a reason
rando bars rise at the ramps.
