[RBW] Re: Locks

2016-11-03 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Indeed. All the discussion on locks is meaningless compared to the actual
experience police departments have had removing locks on abandoned bikes.
Cheap U Locks are as worthless as cable locks. Expensive U Locks are
slightly better. But there is more to bike security so read the discussion
if the subject is dear to you.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Bag Setups

2016-11-03 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Sounds like a basket (w/bungee net) would be a good choice-- easy to put
things in, not otherwise fussy. Though sometimes gets in the way of locking
to certain styles of bike racks.

Here's my Hunqapillar w/front & rear baskets.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/16115956976/in/album-72157634163491121/

Next choice for me would be saddlesack (medium, probably). It's also easy
to put things in, not otherwise fussy. Looks good, too.

Good luck! (great colors combo on your wife's JA, too.)

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith Jr with Alternate Handlebars? - Choco-moose

2016-11-03 Thread iamkeith
I think what's interesting here, regarding the varying responses and levels
satisfaction with the Boscos, is that it probably has much less to do with
individual preferences for riding position (how "upright" someone likes to
be) than it does individual body types and proportions.I think this is
the case more often than people realize, but the effect is very exagerated
on the Clem because of the limited number of frame sizes, and the huge
range of rider heights they have to accommodate. I'd guess that MOST
people probably don't have an ideally sized Clem, but rather the one that
is "closest" to fitting.

For someone like me, who is at the smallest end of the rider height range
for a given frame, the bars are going to start out really high relative to
the saddle height to begin with. For someone at the taller end of the fit
spectrum for a given frame, not only are the bars lower, but they also
quickly get further away as the seat post is extended upward and rearward,
due to the relatively slack seat tube angle. But even for those for whom
the bike happens to be sized appropriately, a bar like the Bosco is going
to highlight body differences. Someone with a short torso, relative to
their leg length/saddle height, is going to feel like the bars are higher
than someone with a long torso who's shoulders and arm sockets are way up
in the sky, and the huge backward reach of the bar doesn't allow you as
much ability to adjust your forward "lean" to compensate for those
differences.

My point of all this is:

Knowing I was at a disadvantage but also having determined that I wanted to
use Boscos, I consciously made some compromises in order to make it all
work. And now, I don't even see them as compromises. In addition to the
longer and lower stem that I mentioned above, I also slid my saddle back
further than I'm normally used to, and angled the grip ends downward a bit
more so they were effectively lower. In regards to the former, this is
something I've started experimenting with more often lately and I wish I'd
done more of earlier. It makes no sense that my saddles should be located
the exact same way, relative to the cranks, on every bike I own, when they
are all set up differently and are used for different types of riding. In
regards to the later, I feel like the angle is what made the third hand
position, on the curve forward of the brake levers, viable.

Hi Brian. Here's my 58 with a small SaddleSack. And another shot with a
medium Wald basket on an R14 rack. Both work great. I usually use one or
both or the basket with a smaller Brand-V bag as shown in the second photo.
I prefer the basket over a larger bag. When empty it is hardly noticed and
light and not floppy. But it's always there when I need to carry extra
provisions and ready to take on whatever I find out on a ride. -Bill in

[RBW] FS: Light Mount

Is anyone interested in this
?

Daylight savings looms.

Light not included. Includes hardware to mount a light at top of wheel
height using rack fixture. Allows bike light to stay in top/bottom
alignment. I think the light throw is nicer too b/c of height. Less
blinding also if set properly. Stainless steel lock nuts, washers, and
bolts. Wood and steel plate painted flat black, keep's it inconspicuous.

It's solid and once attached, you'll likely have it set for decades.

$14.99 plus shipping.

Made to order.

[RBW] Can I do this with my new wheelset?

2016-11-03 Thread lum gim fong
*Background:*
700c LX hubs to A23 rims laced with Sapim Race butted spokes. 135 rear
spacing. Shimano type 8/9/10 speed freehub.
Built at Gravel and Grind. Spin fantastically smooth. Less than 350 miles
on them.

*Plan:*
Though they are gorgeous and true and amazing wheels. I am not going to use
them as I prefer 650b, and was thinking of selling them here.
But then I thought that maybe the best thing to do is put them on my wife's
700c Raleigh to upgrade her 700c wheelset. Her bike is 135 dropout spacing,
so the wheels will fit.

But, her exhisting Weinman rear wheel is a freewheel!?!?!? 7 speed mega
range cassette.
Shimano Revoshift twist shifters. Shimano entry level derailers.

Can I just put my A23 rear wheel on (which has a shimano hg50 7-speed
cassette with a 4.5mm spacer on it), and expect it will work with the
shifter spacing of her bike?

Is there a way to make the spacing work? Or is her 7 speed freewheel
cassette spacing gonna be too different to put my freehub wheelset on the
bike?

*What I really want to do is just get her a 650b Rivendell Mixte. But she
is content with her Raleigh. Maybe I should just get her one anyway.*

Shimano 7-speed freewheel and cassette spacing are the same. It will shift
fine, but she may notice the missing huge bailout cog if your cassette has
considerably higher gearing.

[RBW] Re: Can I do this with my new wheelset?

2016-11-03 Thread dougP
I did not read further before posting this, so this could be an echo.

"

*What I really want to do is just get her a 650b Rivendell Mixte. But she
is content with her Raleigh. Maybe I should just get her one anyway."*Just
tell her "it wouldn't work" & get her the Rivendell. My wife was content
with a substantially lesser bike, but after 5 minutes on (her now)
Rivendell in a parking lot exclaimed "I gotta have this bike.today.".
Both of you will be much happier.

Just my opinion, but given the data, yea, your wheelset w/spacer, etc.,
will work just fine on her bike. It's up to you to be able to pull this
one off. Best of luck.

There's a very cool 13-34 7 speed cassette. 13-15-17-20-24-29-34 IIRC. I
have it on my ancient MTB. Shifts like a dream & avoids that weird 24 to
34 jump on the "Mega-range" cassette.
