Garth, I laughed out loud at the visual created with "sleigh ride down the
hillside." Can't tell you why, it was just an apt description and I could feel
it.

I'll stick it out with these tires for awhile. I've got hope after reading that
some others had the same and it improved with mileage.

I'm just so happy to have my bike back. My birthday is this weekend and guess
what -mama found a new paved bike trail! This means the rest of my family must
not complain about however many miles I decide we should go.

Patrick - cool photo. A keepsake. All your ideas were good so, naturally I've
implemented zero because, well, I don't know anything about that stuff.
Including how to fix a flat. *Ducks for cover here.* 

I would like it if the Cheviot had more mount points, but at least there

I've had the same swivel experience with the Two-fish, on bikes with zero
wbcbos. The strap is also very long. I know, I could cut it. The old style
metal band mounts that VO now carries work pretty well, though they don't
work with all cage designs. I have been contemplating Riv nuts on one or
two old frames. Anybody try that? (Though probably not on a Cheviut.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot touring?

2017-02-24 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, I tried a 2-fish, velcro, strap-on cage on the down tube of my '99
Joe Starck custom gofast, for which I had foolishly told Grant to limit
cage braze ons to the dt. (Grant: you were right, both for the st braze ons
and for the sub-73* seat tube angles. But don't tell anyone I acknowledged
this.)

Moving on: it works, after a fashion, but it also swivels at the slightest
touch. I found that it would swivel far enough from straight line-ahead
that my eagerly pumping legs would brush it, much to my annoyance, as I
sturdily rode along.

As alternative, I tried various bar-mount bottle cage attachment gizmos.
They work well -- except that, with Riv geometry, the added weight of a 28
oz bottle makes the front wheel flop more than I can comfortably tolerate.

I found a better solution to carrying water was to attach a Carradice --
can't remember the name; it's the smallest one -- to the saddle, and put a
quart bottle inside. Even better, I got D Banzer to make me a nice custom
seat pack, that attaches elegantly to the rails of my Flite, that has a
pocket for a 28oz bottle. Wala.

Either 'stache work for me. I find the combination of 'staches and Suntour bar

Re: [RBW] Re: New tires, perhaps?

2017-02-24 Thread Garth
Get the tires you want Leah ! While the shop owner may think what he put on is
swell, but since you're the one that actually rides your bike(along with furry
friend), that's about all there is to that. Reminds me of a back seat driver
 I once had some Dunlop new auto tires that were supposedly wonderful.
on the way home I going down my usual steep hill I was frightened for my life
for the first time in my life driving an auto, it felt like the tires were
going to come off the rims and I'd be on a sleigh ride down the hillside. Right
back to the shop and returned them and have ridden my preferred Michelin tires
ever since. You like what you like...

The Conti tires you had have changed name to the Ride Tour and come in the size
you need so have them get some or from some-one.

2X9 it is. What cogs come between the 11 and the 25? (The 39 outer and 25

This may be interesting, but to insert an aside: I wish websites would have
a "merely text" alternative to video. I find videos hugely slow, and you
can't as easily skim to the essential parts.

(Why are they so g-damned slow?)

But I f-fwded through it and got the idea, and I (personally, approaching
62) rather like the general idea.

Patrick Moore, who cancelled Netflix b/c it's not worth paying to f-fwd

Re: [RBW] Rivendell e-bike (conversion)

2017-02-24 Thread Ashwath Akirekadu
Joe,

I'm 100% in the same camp. A few months ago I was religiously opposed to
the idea of e-bikes. (a) I didn't like the way any of them looked (b) Less
workout (c) more complicate, more things to maintain/worry about (d) many
of them felt like flaky prototypes still

After I changed my job and the commute got significantly longer, I do
realize the value of some peddle assist. E-bike will probably save 15
minutes each way for me. I think my bike commute would involve some 30 or
so stops. A good chunk of my commute time goes into accelerating from stop
to 12mph. This is where peddle assist could make a huge difference. It
will improve my cruising speed too.

With a kid at home and a busy work/life, lot of times it becomes a choice
between some exercise and no exercise (not just with biking). If the
battery can help me reach home before my son goes to bed, I will happily
accept reduced peddling every time!

There's a good chance that my Joe will feature Bimoz (or something
similarly simple) one day.

Cheers,
-Ash

Can you provide a link to the pannier hardware or a photo of the connection

[RBW] Re: Cheviot touring?

2017-02-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Completely understood and agreed...!

I read travel journals and look at pictures on CGOAB and know from those,
even in this modern day, people are having incredible adventures on just
about anything, and I do not say that in any way judgmental regarding their
bikes. I stand in awe! And as I sit reading, they are out doing... a
lesson not to be taken lightly or ignored.

I was looking again through some older "magazines" that I have, through
they are not magazines... They are the "Fellowship News" put out from an
offshoot of the CTC in the UK - the FCOT, the "Fellowship of Cycling Old
Timers". There are stories from people who have biked and toured most of
their lives, throwing together minimal gear, maybe some bread and wine, and
heading out for a journey, be that close or a few countries away. And
those journeys were not necessarily on fancy bikes, not in the least. The
Raleigh or whatever would do just fine. It was, indeed, the journey, the
adventure and the living that mattered.

I have at least a couple of true touring bikes, not that they have been on
worthy journeys lately, but I had to laugh and think of the FCOT "old
timers" when I was riding the Cheviot that day. I may not be as
accomplished or as bold, but at least I am wise enough to aspire and
hopefully, one day, do...

[RBW] Re: Cheviot touring?

2017-02-24 Thread Austin ^
imo the biggest limiting factor to the cheviot's tour worthiness is its
solitary bottle cage. I like having three water bottles full when I'm
spending all day on my bike, sometimes a camelbak in addition to that
depending on refill opportunities. That said I certainly took my cheviot on
some 80ish mile days and overnights, fully loaded, and it never gave me any
complaints. If I were setting it up for a tour I would personally lean
towards drop bars but that's just my preference.

Ha! Psychology!

When I was a psych major, one of my professors made a public statement to
us that they cannot cure anything - only phobias . All other psychiatric
illnesses they have no cure for at this time.. All they have is best
guesses based on the research they do. That is what was told to us. So
don't put too much truck into any theories (and remember that theories are
not fact, just a working idea based on their best guesses, that can be
debunked at any time).

The discipline is very young. Will be interesting to see what they can do

thats an interesting pic. i wonder what weight limit constitutes "road
tour" (or mtn tour for that matter). with the lower rider weight limit and
higher load capacity of the cheviot to the hillborne, i assume it kind of
evens out.

Re: [RBW] Rivendell e-bike (conversion)

2017-02-24 Thread Joe Bernard
Ash: That's a neat lower-power mid-drive system, which is really the way to go
for cyclists who still want to pedal like a cyclist. I'm quickly learning on my
new mid-drive Haibike that you still get a good workout with these, it just
goes by faster. I have a torque sensing system (I won't bore RBW with how all
this works, I'll let y'all search the terms) that produces kind of a "matching"
amount of power based on how hard you pedal. I just came back from a fast, cold
ride, and I'm sweating!

The great undersold aspect of ebikes is the time factor: I love to ride, but my
time is very limited; this "faster pedaling" technology lets me get more miles
and sights in, in a short-ish time window. There's a lot of riders out there
with job and family responsibilities who would appreciate this benefit. But
that's only if it's your thing. For the rest..boo hiss! ;-)

[RBW] Re: Cheviot touring?

2017-02-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
My comment on load capacity came from this, something I had bookmarked
awhile ago...

http://imgur.com/UPvCmy0

I will say they use "tour" in the description! That said, the suggested
rider weight limit is lower than some of the other bikes. It could be that
a front and/or rear load would not be quite as much of a concern, not being
quite as supported by the main triangle (or lack of) and all.

Still, a light load would certainly make the ride more fun - and I admit it
would be with the idea of fun - and adventure - but fun nevertheless...

[RBW] Re: Rosco Road is much more complete now. Docena handlebar bag

2017-02-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Thanks Bill. That's a great solution, the hardest part of the plan being
that transition from the 23.8mm business end down to the 10mm required
section. To have it sectioned down to where it cannot slide is good work.
"Mad skills" as a co-worker used to say.

I am in the planning stages of reducing the number of bikes in the house,
quality and true use over quantity, but once I can focus on the bikes that
make the cut I am going to work on the decaleur solution myself, pretty
much following Rob's ideas as well as yours. I already have a Docena bag,
the trick being finding the right long term bike/rack/sizing combination.

Thanks for the explanation! Looking forward to whatever you publish about
it...

Oh, and I totally get the lift-a-tube... When I lived in Denver, I used
bikes and light rail and was forever mumbling when I had to lift my bike
into the high cars with the tall, short steps. Anything that can help with
that, as well as climbing and carrying to basements, apartments, etc. is a
good thing here.

Bob:

Unfortunately, I can't point you to tour reports specifically for the
Cheviot, Clem, etc. However, I strongly encourage you to just pack it up &
go. One of the over-looked advantages of bike touring is that you don't
need a purpose built touring bike to do it. Unlike other more niche
aspects of cycling (racing & MTBing come to mind), touring is really just
rigging up whatever bike you've got to carry some stuff. While touring,
I've met people having a wonderful time on everything from racing bikes
doing a credit card tour with those seatpost racks & only changes of
clothing, students on Craigslist MTBs, 70s era racing bikes, etc., etc.
You run what you brung & attitude takes care of the rest. If anything a
Cheviot is better suited to the task than many of the above. Talk to
Rivendell about load capacity to get the right answers but my guess is that
the Cheviot will carry more weight than you'll really need.

[RBW] Re: Rosco Road is much more complete now. Docena handlebar bag

2017-02-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
Bob Lovejoy asked about my homemade decaleur. It's something that I'm
pretty proud of, so I'll try to describe it a little more. Yes, like Rob
Perks I started with a Nitto Accessory mount. Here is one variant of that
product. Link to Bens Cycle

I used one clamp. It has a 26.0mm end that clamps to the middle sleeve of
my Nitto Noodle. The other end wants to clamp something 23.8mm in diameter
(a.k.a. 15/16"). I got some 15/16" aluminum bar stock and lathed it down
to 12mm and then a short section of 10mm on the ends. Ortlieb pannier
hardware clips onto those 10mm ends. The 12mm part stops the Ortlieb clips
from sliding. I used the four-jaw chuck to lathe the part off center,
providing both clearance and adjustability. Here's a shot at the business
end of the home made decaleur. It's a little hard to see what's going on.
I maybe should do a short youtube of the separate bits and how they go
together.

I don't mind Marty, thank you.

2017-02-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
My Rosco Road now has the massive Docena handlebar bag from Ocean Air
Cycles #builtbyswift. I made my own decaleur solution, based largely on
the prototype that Rob Perks published on his blog. The home made decaleur
uses Ortlieb pannier hardware for rock solid connection and one-hand
instant removability.

[RBW] Cheviot touring?

2017-02-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I was daydreaming the other day, an amazingly glorious day for the midwest
in February, riding my Cheviot. I could not help but smile as riding along
was the most fun and peaceful thing I had done in awhile. The idea that
the world would be a much better and happier place if people rode their
bikes more and drove their cars less seemed pretty obvious.

Anyway, part of my daydream, sounding outlandish now but not so much then,
was wondering what it would be like to go on a real tour on the Cheviot. I
searched CGOAB but no journals or reports found. I also cannot remember
anyone here telling many stories of Cheviot touring or longer distance
travels though I certainly could have missed things.

So, just because... Can anyone point me to stories, journals, pictures,
etc. of people touring on a Cheviot or similar bike? Clem L's
(Clementines) would certainly be in there, and other mixte type of frames.
It would be interesting to hear of such things, noting either the big
smiles or the wide, possibly concerned, eyes of the riders...

Thanks!

Bob Lovejoy
Galesburg, IL

P.S. I do realize the Cheviot (specifically) does not have the same load
carrying capacity as, say, a Hillborne, Appaloosa, or certainly a
Hunqapillar. Still, reality must be put aside at times, if just for
awhile. Can be a long while though...

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: new white industries cranks

2017-02-24 Thread Mark Reimer
Hi Ryan,

I'm not selling any chain rings with my cranks, just the crank arms. White
Industries uses a very useful and unique design that effectively means it
has no BCD. The large chain ring mounts to the crank arm just like a
'spiderless' system would. Then the small ring bolts to the large ring.
They call it their 'variable bolt circle', or VBC.

In other words, you MUST use a white industries large ring, but you can use
any five bolt small ring you want. I'm using a white industries 44t big
ring, and a Sugino 26t small ring from Riv. Look close at some of their
cranks and you can see that there is no spider, and the small ring is
bolted directly to the big ring.
