Seat posts. Im interested in two offerings from nitto. The s65 and the s83.

The question: Is the S65s angle infinitely adjustable?

Nothing, I mean nothin in this world drives me more mad than an ill adjusted
saddle. I swore off single bolt posts after purchasing a campagnolo nuovo
record but I am willing to give the S65 a chance if it is uber adjustable

Those LEDs sound very cool. Really simple, smart, cheap, fun idea!

Can you post a photo of them? Do they change colors?

There are valve cap LED lights on Amazon for around a dollar each (in a 10

I have toured a bunch on my Sam. I'm a heavy rider and had no trouble. I have a

My lovely wife rides a Joe and it is great. She is not as strong of a rider as
I am and when I ride the Clem she is much faster than I am. The clem doesn't
beg to be ridden hard, but rather to be enjoyed. If I could only keep one bike,
it would be ole Sammy. I have an 86 pbh and the 52 Clem fits great.

Thanks Michael. I normally bike home on the waterfront and could meet up.
Currently with the water levels I have to bike on the west side. Have you used
it for touring? Why did you choose that model over others? I love the albatross

[RBW] Nice conspicuity finds at the Japanese import store

2017-03-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
We like a few products from the Japanese import store. The store is called
Zipang and it's in El Cerrito. We were on a visit a couple weeks back and
I wandered down one of the aisles to find a couple cool cycling related
items, for practically free.

1. A nice fender-contoured red rear reflector. Functionally identical to
something like THIS

It's made of plastic, except the mounting bolt and nut are metal. It's
just a good basic rear reflector, made to fit on a fender. $1.48

2. A pair of LED presta valve caps. You put these on your presta valves,
and when they are jiggled in any way, the LED lights up for a couple
seconds. If you are riding, they are on constantly, because that's plenty
of jiggle. They even light up on the BART train. $1.48 for a pair,
batteries included.

Re: [RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-03-28 Thread William R.
These Almotions are the first Schwalbe tires that I have bought that were
anything other than perfectly round. I have had Kojaks, Big Bens and
Thunder Burts. All were/are great. Third ride on these this morning and
they seem to be getting better little by little. Or am I getting used to
it? I will keep riding them and see. It certainly doesn't seem as painfully
obvious as it was when I first rolled on them.

And yes Scott, the reflective stripe on these is all over the place, that
will never smooth out. More eye catching for drivers though! So a plus?

[RBW] Re: Grant coached Bike Snob on today's blog post

2017-03-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Bob B disagreed with me and Bob K stated that he's with Patrick and Bob B

I think the two Bobs might have misunderstood my post. I think Eben Weiss
is a very talented writer, is very funny, and I think BSNYC is a great
blog. In my post, I was poking fun at those OTHER people who claim to
dislike Bike Snob. In my experience, those people who say they don't like
Bike Snob claim to never read Bike Snob, and also claim that he is never
funny. How can they know he is never funny if they never read him?

I read Bike Snob every once in a while, find him funny most of the time,
and I think the world is a better place with BSNYC in it.

[RBW] Re: Advice on Choosing a New Rivendell Appaloosa, Hillborne or Clem

Jonathan,
If you want to test ride a 56 Hillborne with Albatross bars, that is
well-racked and shod with new Schwalbe Mondials, I have one downtown that
you are welcome to ride.

I am also an 85 pbh, and it fits me nicely.

Re: [RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-03-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I wonder if quality has declined? I've owned 3 pairs of BAs, the first
dating back to their initial appearance in the early 2000s (when they cost
$80 or more retail!). This was a 26 X 60 mm pair. The next pair, circa
2010, was a 700C X 60 pair; and the last, a couple of years later, was a
pair of the 700C X 60 folding Liteskin model, with thinner sidewalls. All
were perfectly round on a variety of rims, and all rode very, very smoothly.

I've also owned numerous pairs of Kojaks; ditto. And F Freds, of course,
again, ditto.

Have others found poor quality in Schwalbe tires? I hope it's not a trend.

I've had the lumpy/bumpy issue with three of the four sets of Schwalbe

Re: [RBW] Silver cranks came today

2017-03-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I just looked it up on the Rivendell site. Nice low Q, of the Ritchey Logic
width. But the copy says, "Not for 10 or 11 speed drivetrains!" with the
exclamation emphasizing the warning.

Why is it not compatible with 10 or 11? I'm using a Logic with 10, and I've
used a Pro 5 Vis with 10; no problems I could see.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Batch of Rosco Mixtes - Maybe

2017-03-28 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I just looked up the recommended PBH for a 60cm Cheviot - 84-94cm - so if
someone was at the lower end of the Cheviot range, then it could seemingly
be an option.

I do know the 60cm Cheviot can seem pretty big, though it seems perfect
when riding. That said, I have a PBH right at 89 and I can understand
someone in the 84-87 range thinking of a somewhat smaller bike. They might
be right or wrong, but I can see them thinking about it, especially with
the "lifter" bar on the potential Rosco.

[RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-03-28 Thread Edwin W
I've got the Yakima Two Timer on the back
for two bikes - works great with a wide variety of bikes, downtubes,
heights, fenders, tire width, wheel size, etc
I've got the Yakima Raptoraero on the
roof which works with a pretty wide range of bikes, too... also doesn't
mind fenders, no break down of bike needed, etc...

If I need more than three bikes, I have put a folding trailabike and
folding Dahon in the back.

I don't like the feel of driving most cars with four bikes hanging off the
back, but some cars are better than others.

Costs can add up
Put a hitch on your car for $150 at Uhaul (they threw it in with the car)
Rear rack for $300
Put bars on top for $200 or so (came with the car, luckily)
Rack on top $150 (I found one on CL)

[RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-03-28 Thread Scott Blouke
I am still undecided on the Almotions. The reflective stripe isn't printed
round and in the stand they look out of round but feel nice riding around.
They do not feel nice like the Bicycle Rolling Resistance review lead me
to hope for.
I think that the tested tire and the TLE version are quite different. I
will give them a fair shot setup tubeless.

I was excited to build up my Cliffhangers today but my double checking on
my spoke calculations wasn't enough and I transposed some numbers so I
would up with a bit too long drive side spokes. I tried lacing it twice
thinking it was me and not the spokes... That was a bummer to a mediocre
day. So correct spokes are ordered hopefully they are here over the
weekend I would like to get the Bombadil I recently got off the list up and
ready to ride.

[RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-03-28 Thread William R.
Thanks for sharing Leah. This Saris looks like it would be a good rack for
my situation. I am currently experiencing a car rack conundrum though. We
are a one car family (my wife and I, plus two kids) and we just recently
bought a new-to-us Outback wagon. It came with a nice 1.25" trailer hitch
installed. I think I may need to upgrade to 2" though as the choices
(strength?) of rear bike carriers seem limited in that size. And I know
that there are 1.25" to 2" adapters available, but they kind of scare me
and put the rack further behind the car about 6". So... I either upgrade
the hitch to a 2" or go with something like the Kuat Transfer that can take
three bikes on a 1.25" hitch and put one bike on the roof? Or in the trunk?
But that doesn't really work because when we are going on trips with the
dog in the trunk and all of our stuff in a pod on the roof (because of dog
in the trunk!), this is the most common time that we actually want all four
bikes on the car. I'm not even sure if there will be room on the roof for a
bike and the pod (36" wide)... As you can see, I don't really have this
figured out yet. Any thoughts would be great appreciated.

And there's always the Metro-North railroad which, for a one time fee of $5,
allows you to take your bike for a ride to the rides.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report from Beacon: An Applaloosa and a Rivendell Fork Hit the Road

2017-03-28 Thread William R.
Hi Roberta,

The bag is a Sackville Saddlesack XSmall - tan available from Riv here:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/bags/products/sackville-saddlesack-xsmall-tan
It is a great bag and cavernous for anything with XSmall in its description.
Not so big that it hits the backs of your legs while pedaling.

That area where Mark lives is great riding and worth the trip if it seems far.
I drove up on Saturday from Dobbs Ferry, New York and it took just under a
hour. Next time I hope to also be in "shape" and ride up.

When these future rides happen, all will be welcome.
