[RBW] Re: Atlantis vs Appaloosa

2017-05-28 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I guess I will throw in that comparisons should probably take into account
the setup and the role the rider is/was looking for. An Atlantis for one
person becomes an off-road capable cruiser, for someone else a long
distance tourer, drops for some, albatross or ??? for others.

My Cheviot is fendered, smooth tired (Schwalbe Marathon Supremes, 40mm),
has somewhat upright bars (MAP/Ahearnes, 570mm, the narrower ones), and is
a mostly city/town based, some would say elegant, bike - though Cheviots
definitely are capable of more. I will say the Cheviot gets the most
admiring comments per mile than any bike I have ever owned, maybe tied with
a Brompton I had. People immediately recognize it as an almost archetypal
bike, old, refined, French, maybe British... And I smile every time I
ride it...

The Appaloosa is capable of larger and chunkier tires (currently BG RnR's
43mm and could certainly go larger), is not currently fendered (though it
could be), has somewhat more aggressive, wider bars (Nitto Bullmoose) and
is set up as something like a mountain bike for grownups. I rode it on a
~35 mile group ride this last weekend and it did absolutely great,
comfortable and fast enough for the mostly relaxed group, perfect for any
gravel or dirt found. My position on the Joe is slightly more aggressive
and that helps with the winds we can have in NW Illinois. I have to laugh
a bit when people look at the Joe, and really like it but have no idea what
to say. It just brings together things people had not imagined being
together - comfortable, touring, mountain bike, basket, two top tubes,
u, what? And I smile every time I ride it...

I have always wanted an Atlantis, maybe a Hunq, but if it was an Atlantis,
I would probably build it as a drop bar bike, long distance tourer mode
though, again, there is absolutely nothing keeping it from being something
else. And I know I would love it too! But this has to stop, it just has
to... :>)

The Cheviot is limited, if you want to be able to do true rough stuff, by
max tire size (with caliper brakes). The Joe and Atlantis not so much
(with v-brakes or cantilevers). This is a broad stroke but if I knew I
wanted a drop-bar bike, the Atlantis would top the list (of the three).
All things are possible but, well the Atlantis wins (for drops) given
normal dimensions and expectations.

That said, I am almost officially old, certainly not fast, and am now a
convert to more upright bars, so the Joe/Cheviot combo is really working
for me, though I still have other bikes and have one (last!) 650B road bike
project in mind.

Apologies for all the words! Did not mean to write this much All I
know is when I ride the Joe, I have great fun and cannot imagine selling
it. When I ride the Cheviot, I have great fun and absolutely cannot
imagine selling it either. Everything else in my life is up for debate but
somehow, some way, not those two bikes.

Enough! Hope the random comments help... It will be interesting to hear
other comparisons.

[RBW] Re: Even a riv (design) can wobble

2017-05-28 Thread Dave Johnston
My Heron Touring is wonderfully stable and yet appropriately responsive for
a "country bike", however about a decade ago I put on a small "clamp on the
bars type" handlebar bag and it got shimmy coasting no hands down a gentle
slope at about 20mph while trying to zip up a jacket. I took the handlebag
off and stuffed it in the trunk bag on the rear rack, which made camera and
chapstick access less convenient. I have never run a bar bag again on that
bike, and never had shimmy before or since.

Knowing what I know now I would have just left the bar bag in place and:
a) pedaled, not coasted
b) rested knee on top tube while coasting
c) put more or less weight in the front bag as an experiment

[RBW] Nice guy, nice day, nice ride

2017-05-28 Thread Patrick Moore
RBW-lister Tim Kirch came through town after riding his Hilsen from KS
City, KS, on his way to San Francisco. We had beer and dinner last night
and a nice ride today, a breezy but sunny and temperate spring day, just an
out/south and back/north on the RG paved trail. Wonderfully, for such a
nice day, the trail was not packed with riders, skateboarders, inline
skaters, and large families with dogs on long leashes.

We meant to ride the Tramway hill but I woke up feeling somewhat beat,
probably from too aggressive climbing and wind-pushing yesterday in too
high a fixed gear, so we settled on the perfectly flat trail. Very nice.
Thanks, Tim, and Godspeed.

I charge Tim to post about his ride from KS City, particularly about the
Clayton, NM to Las Vegas, NM leg.

Re: [RBW] Re: Even a riv (design) can wobble

2017-05-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Was the initial question about shimmy, or about straight line stability? As
Antone says, there is a big difference. I've owned bikes that just felt
"darty" -- they didn't want to track straight, and the slightest body
adjustment or sidewind would send them swerving. *And*, this could happen
on a bike that was, if anything, rather sluggish in turn-in -- we're not
talking about darty crit bikes.

One such bike was an otherwise nice Fuji Royale, 6 speed era ('cause it was
written on the right chain stay: "12 Speed"). The bike just didn't want to
track straight. It wasn't terrible, and you could adjust, and I did, but it
just wasn't stable. And this was no darty crit bike by any means.

But put a 20+ lb load in the back, and the handling became just sweet, if
rather sedate.

Likewise: riding a NORBA (can't speak to modern ones) era mountain bike
with too-skinny tires: again, just would not track straight.

Or, last example, my otherwise nice Sam Hill. Fine, if rather sedate on the
flats, but point it uphill, sit far back, gear down, and pedal hard, and it
was very hard to keep the thing in a straight line. (This is very great
contradistinction from my 4 other Rivs, of which one wonderful quality was
straight line, no-thought/no worries stability, albeit with supremely
confident and seamless turn-in. In fact, on the flats or in fast downhill
sweepers, the Sam felt rock solid.)

All of this is and entirely different matter from shimmy.

I think that the Original Person was talking about this sort of
instability, and not shimmy -- right?

[RBW] Re: Even a riv (design) can wobble

2017-05-28 Thread Bruce K Jamison
It sounds like shimmy is the more popular term, and yes, it went away as
soon as I got back into a good riding position. But it was a first for
this bike and I was surprised more than anything. I'm sure I've ridden
like that before, maybe this time I over did it, or maybe being tired meant
I was not controlling it as well. But I still took time to check things
out. I've even tried to bring it on and so far no more problems. On my
other bikes that were prone to shimmy I've had the most luck with moving
weight around, redistributing loads, things like that. But the San Marcos
is currently set up as a go-fast bike. I took the racks off a while back
and I don't carry much on it other than an underseat bag and water.

Maybe I was on the edge of losing control and shimmy was a warning to stop
messing around!

[RBW] Re: Save Bruce Gordon Cycles

2017-05-28 Thread Norma Herrera-Baird
Hi All,

I'm Evan's partner, Norma. I've skimmed through this and see lots of
questions regarding the business side of things, especially what exactly
happens if/when we reach our goal so decided to jump in, since that's my
area of expertise.

Whether or not we reach the goal, the money is going to Bruce. We setup the
GoFundMe to send the monies directly to BG, so we'll never see a cent of
it.

Should we reach the $250,000, we will be co-owners of BGC along with a
group of carefully selected members of our bike community. These people
will include bike shop owners, builders, bike activists and people from the
Bike!Bike! community. Our end goal will be a museum and bike building &
repair school fit to honor BG's legacy. Bruce himself will be around to
teach us and our students everything he knows. (by the way, admission to
the first class of the school will be an offered perk on GoFundMe); We will
be turning the for-profit company into a non-profit collective, with a
mission to guide the next generation of bicycle artisans and advocate for
better biking.

What qualifies *me* personally to be a part of this? Glad you asked! I'm
currently the ED of a non-profit museum, was on the staff of California's
statewide bike advocacy organization before that; and was on the board of a
bike collective in Oakland. I've served as an advisor to multiple bike
collectives across the country and my personal network of bike activists
and enthusiasts is worldwide.

We also have an educator on our team, to guide us in designing and
implementing the curriculum.

I hope that answers most of the questions asked. Please email me directly
for follow-up, as I will not be receiving alerts from this Group.

Ride on,

Norma

[RBW] Re: Rear disc question for Hubbuhubbuh

2017-05-28 Thread Jim A
Your frame has two unthreaded bolt holes spaced 51mm apart in the same
plane as the disc rotor. This is known as International Standard (I.S.)
mounting.

The BB7 brake has two bolt holes spaced 74mm apart, not in the same plane
as the rotor. This is known as Post Mounting.

As is very common, you need an adapter to mount a Post Mount brake on an
I.S. mount frame

The adapter is also the part that ensures the brake caliper sits at the
right height/position for whatever size rotor you are using. Most frames
are built to be able to run a 140mm rotor on the rear. This would take an
adapter with 0mm offset (ie. no offset needed) In order to line up with a
bigger rotor, the brake caliper would need to be spaced further away from
the I.S. holes. A 180mm rotor is 40mm bigger 140mm, so the adapter is
called a "+40mm" adapter (although the radius difference is only 20mm).
Some companies label these as "R180", the R meaning rear, which assumes the
frame was built for 140mm. (Front adapters are different, forks are usually
built with 160mm rotors in mind, so a F180 would only be +20mm, although
some new road forks are built for 140mm).

It's safest to use an Avid brand adapter with an avid brake, but most brand
mixing usually works out OK.

I hope this is a useful amount of information.

Re: [RBW] Re: What tires are people running on their Hubbuhubbuhs?

2017-05-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Very nice. This photo should be sent to the boblist thread about fender
with knobby tires!

Am I right in thinking that the Riv tandem has an especially long wheelbase?

I recall a Bicycling or Bicycle Guide story from 25+ years ago, about a
roadie father who took his 8-9 year old son as stoker on a tandem. He
called his son "Turbo". When he needed boost, he'd yell, "Turbo!" and the
kid would kick in. No problems with torque steer, apparently.

Keep us updated on the rides.

Patrick Moore, whose first experience on a tout 531C Orbit (Brit) racing
tandem ended in disaster with a broken steerer tube (but just bruises,
thank God). Talk about wag the dog, with an inexperienced stoker!

[RBW] CETMA rack and Sackville ShopSack

2017-05-28 Thread Steve Butcher

As I'm continuing to sort through and pass along stuff I'm not using, I'm
offering for sale my 5-rail CETMA front cargo rack. This rack is the
older version which attaches to the handlebars and over the axles. It is
powdercoated matte black, looks quite "industrial" and is rated to haul a
substantial load. This rack does not have the extra attachment points for
lights like the newer version. The rack is in excellent condition always
stored indoors with only a rare hairline scratch or small scuff from
mounting a basket, the welds are all intact, nothing is bend, and there is
no rust. All mounting hardware is included. I'm selling because I find I
just don't have the need to haul heavy or bulky objects. I'm thinking
$100.00 shipped CONUS. I'm also offering a large tan Sackville ShopSack
which is in like new condition. I've used it very little, always stored
indoors, and never wet. I'd like to get $70.00 shipped CONUS. I'd prefer
payments via PayPal Family and Friends. Please PM me if you've any
questions. Thanks. Steve
