[RBW] WTB: CHEAP/USED 44cm Noodle

2017-06-30 Thread Doug Bloch
Bob,

I have some 44cm I might be able to send home with my brother in law this
weekend. Not sure how stuffed his suitcase is.

While the phrase "penis-head shaped bell" made my day, I highly doubt the shape
of the bell is an issue. Unless you were over-dinging I'd assume she just
didn't want to move. It's not the shape of your bell, it's how you ding it.

Cheers!

I'm not sure how accurate the geo for the new 650b models on the website is. I
know there were some differences between the 650b hunq listed and actual
geometry. I reached out to will and a 650b hunq owner and both gave me numbers
that differed from those on the website.

[RBW] Re: 650B Atlantis

2017-06-30 Thread dougP
Interesting. Mine is from '03 & the geo chart from an old flyer shows 45.5
cm chainstays. This chart is not as complete as the current on-line one
but what other dims it has are the same for the 58. I double checked the
chainstays on mine & they are 45.5 cm.

Not too likely that this would be N+1. But then I wouldn't be the first
list member to have multiples of the same Rivendell model, would I?

[RBW] FS: VO Grand Cru Zeste Cantilever Brakeset

2017-06-30 Thread Ash A
I have had them on my Appaloosa for about 200 miles/2 months or so. These
are good brakes. No squeals. It swings open fully (i.e., brake pads
don't hit fork blades) - which means no need to deflate fat tires while
removing wheels.

Giving them up because I've decided that I want my brakes in black for the
color theme I'm shooting for :)

$90 shipped to lower 48.

[RBW] Re: 650B Atlantis

2017-06-30 Thread Garth
Take a look at the current geo charts. The 650b 56 has different HTA and
rake, so different trail than the 58 700c. By this calculator with both
40mm tire width, the trail is 61 for the 650b and 68 for the 700c.
http://yojimg.net/bike/web_tools/trailcalc.php

The HT slope angle is only 1/2 degree different, and the TT are within
1/2 cm. Chainstays only 1/2 cm longer for the 650B.Seat tube angle is 1/2
degree shallower too, so that has to be factored in. All in all it adds up
to "a different feel", everything all yet one whole. Plus, it's not set up
the same as your other bike, is it ?

Re: [RBW] Re: Discs versus calipers

2017-06-30 Thread Patrick Moore
That's not a bad article, though some of both the pro's and con's are
nit-picky and not of real importance in real life -- eg, on the "pro" side,
that you can slap reflective tap on your rims' braking surface. Sure, I
choose my brakes based on reflective tape; and in fact, the light disc rims
don't bother with brake tracks. (And not all light disc rims are carbon
fiber, tho' this has me wondering about some nice carbon fiber 29er rims --
lessee, 40 mm wide, 375 grams ...). And on the "con" side, harder to
maintain and more complex than rim or drum brakes. Not quite; cantis, at
least for the masses? Getting the effing little cable hook re-attached on V
brakes? Drum brakes? *Drum brakes?*

Also: " they're only slightly less maddening than a chain case to remove
and replace a wheel. I've yet to do so without a work stand and tools,
since the caliper has required re-centering every time the rear wheel is
replaced. Rim and drum brakes don't have this problem, and they can be
used with existing framesets."

What world is he from? That's bogus! At least, it applies only to an
alternative universe. It's easier to remove and re-install a wheel with all
the discs I've used, than with cantis or V brakes and this with rear-ward
facing dropouts, too. True, you need a certain finesse -- you can't just
shove the damned thing in anywhichway, but it's certainly no harder than
getting a 32 mm tire in between the pads of a caliper brake.

But I do really think that, on the whole, he gives discs their due.

Here's another perspective on the pro/con .

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/disc-brakes.html

The more I acquaint myself with disc brakes pros and cons I can see where
GP is coming from in not offering discs. For the intended uses and ride
qualities of a frame of his design yeah, I can where there would be some
changes required that do not agree with this. It's just not as simple as
slapping on disc mounts as is.

So the merits/demerits of disc brakes along is not the matter here, it's
"are they suitable for intention GP has for his frame designs ?"

Well gee, who am I to question what someone else intends ? Laughable

[RBW] Discs versus calipers

2017-06-30 Thread Jesse
I've heard a handful of folks on either the iBOB or 650b groups say their Riv
forks are too stout for their liking. Makes me wonder how much compliance a
full blown low trail Jeff Lyon fork or somesuch has compared to the average Riv.

No experience w/ disc, but I'm guessing running fat tires tubeless @ low PSI
compensates a bit for the overbuilt nature of disc forks.

I remember Matt Chester talking about why he preferred rim brakes.. something
to the effect of disc use stressing the frame. Pretty sure Grant mentions this
issue as well. Have always wondered if this is just a convenient data point for
folks in the rim brake camp, or if it's a serious thing that would cause frame
issues down the road.

Re: [RBW] 650B Atlantis

2017-06-30 Thread Mike Williams
Doug, its impressive to hear this story coming from you! More than anyone on
the list, I think of you as more resolute about your Atlantis being capable
for all of the kind of riding that you love to do. When we all talk about
different models or even brands and ride characteristics, you always pop into
my head as' yeah, but is it going to offer me anything that my Atlantis
doesnt'? And I totally agree with that reasoning! Are you going to be in the
N+1 crowd?! -Mike

[RBW] Re: In praise of Spur-cycles bells

2017-06-30 Thread Marc40a
I've have all of the bells mentioned... or should I say, "Hello my name is
Marc and I'm a bellaholic."

Seriously, I have all of them except for the PDW bell (I have the stem
spacer version of that bell, the Alexander Graham Bell) and the Lion.

The Crane mounted on a quill stem crushes them all - an authoritative
sonourous ding that can be heard from a good distance back.

The PDW (Alexander Graham Bell) is a distant second, the Spur, a distant
3rd.

I, too, was enticed by the backstory and engineering aspect of the Spur
cycle bell but one day I had a moment of clarity that changed everything:

I was commuting home on the bike trail on a hot summer day and came up
behind a very attractive female jogger. "Perfect, opportunity to use my new
bell," I thought to myself. "Everyone loves the bell." Plink, Plink. She
didn't hear me. A little bit closer Plink Plink Nope. Plink,
PlinkPlink, Plink... "NOTICE ME" "ACKNOWLEDGE MY PRESENCE". Well,
eventually she did and it wasn't with a smile. The creepiness and absurdity
of of the scene struck me like brick in the head. I was 'that guy'. I saw
the scene for what it was: A middle aged guy on a bike, vigorously flicking
his little penis-head shaped bell, smiling like a madman while riding
behind an attractive female jogger on the bike path.

I ding loud and proud from as far back as possible now. My bell is a
thunderous warning, not a creepy plink plink.

Re: [RBW] 650B Atlantis

2017-06-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Perhaps the longer stays help? I know that my 2 later customs, with 44.5 cm
stays, handle much better than the shorter stayed '95 custom (~42.5) and
even than the Ram (43.5). And this despite what some would say are less
than optimal wheels -- ranging in size from 24" to 25" depending on tire,
currently 24.5" actual diameter. They are unerring straight or turning.

I've also found that weight distribution has a great deal to do with it;
that is, weight distribution relative to the geometry in question. There's
no doubt that my 2 customs handle better with a lower bar and more weight
on the front wheel -- sit up and beg, and the front end gets a wee bit
light for ideal handling.

But to improve on what has been a long-time Rivendell benchmark, that's
rather impressive. I'd be interested in others' impressions comparing the
old versus new, and 700C versus 650B.

Perhaps Rivendell staff can speak up?

[RBW] 650B Atlantis

2017-06-30 Thread dougP
On my way to the West Point Inn weekend, I stopped by RBWHQ just to hang
out & check out all the new goodies. As luck would have it, Roman was
working with a potential customer, helping him sort out the Appaloosa,
Atlantis & Clem question. The guy had been riding old bikes for a long
time & felt it was about time to get something really nice. After he took
off on Grant's personal Appaloosa (he intends to commute so all the junk on
the bike was a good simulated load), Roman walked me thru all the changes
on the new Atlantis & offered to slap a saddle on a 56 cm , 650B. Since I
really wasn't buying anything, I declined the ride.

After a while the guy came back, thoroughly smitten with the Appaloosa, and
asking about what was the next level up? Of course it's the Atlantis, and
the 56 cm 650B was the right size. So it got the saddle, all checked out &
away the customer went. On his return, while he & Roman discussed the
differences between Atlantis & Appaloosa, and Roman worked up a couple of
sample builds for him, I took off on the Atlantis, "just for fun". Oh boy,
was that a most pleasant surprise!

I've had my 58 cm, 700c wheeled Atlantis since 2003. We've covered a lot
of ground. By the time I got to the end of the building, I thought "this
is really different, in a really GOOD way". The bike felt more responsive
in all respects. It was shod with chubbier tires than the 40 mms on my
bike. Of course it had no load, just a small front rack. Being new, all
the clicks clicked perfectly and the brakes braked. Still, it was the RIDE
that was noticeable.

The smaller wheel size must have something to do with it. The chainstays
are 2 cm longer than mine. The TT has a tad more slope. What other subtle
improvements have been made to take an already fine riding bike & turn it
into a magical experience? Normally I'm quite skeptical of small changes
making big differences in already nice things, but in this case it's
definitely change for the better.

BTW, Roman found a green Appaloosa frame that the customer couldn't take
his eyes off of. My guess is he's close to New Bike Day. Maybe Roman will
post photos?

[RBW] Re: Key Characteristics of a #mannyride

This isn't exactly a characteristic of a #mannyride, but this exchange
happened several years ago between me and my son Henry, who was 12 or so at
the time.
Henry: When are we going bike camping with Manny again?
Me: I don't know, son
Henry: How do you know when a bike camping ride is going to happen?
Me: Manny texts me
Henry: Oh

Henry: Has Manny texted you?

I guess the characteristic is that kids (of all ages) that go on a
#mannyride want to go on another #mannyride

Goes to show there's more than one way to Build-a-Bike. Great job, and
thanks for sharing your process. Others may find that encouraging and
interesting.

[RBW] Re: Help identify bottle holder from Roman's staff bikes

2017-06-30 Thread John
Randi Jo is the best! Her caps are the best made bike caps I own, we
have her bartender and M.U.T. bags on all our bikes, and she made me custom
saddle covers for my Gilles Berthoud saddles.

I've tried other bags, but our Randi Jo & Sackville bags are our most
used favorites.

Little planning, much randomness, memorable photos, all accomplished by

I can't imagine selling a bartender bag. Have one on every bike. Great for
wallet, keys and cellphone, and doubles for a spare water bottle

[RBW] Re: In praise of Spur-cycles bells

2017-06-30 Thread Ken Yokanovich
My eldest daughter was generous enough to have purchased a Spur Cycle bell
for me for Christmas. It's a special bell in many ways; MUSA, aesthetically
attractive, well made, sounds amazing, and was a gift from one of my
favorite people in the world. It deserved a special bike, which turned out
to be the HubbuHubbuH tandem that I enjoy riding with my other daughter.
Since it is a tandem that begs to be ridden whimsically with two sets of
bars, we've adorned it with 4 bells. The Spur Cycle, the Crane Clone, a
Crane Jingler, and a cheapy New Belgium brewing jingler. All four are fun,
but the Spur Cycle is the best one of the lot

Ash,
A velcro strap between downtube and front wheel will solve the weight swing

Other choice is a double kickstand.

As others mentioned, I also use mine for mounting lights (on Paul's Gino
