[RBW] Re: Sunrace make good cassettes?

2017-09-01 Thread lum gim fong
Yeah, I checked t-count, tooth jump counts between cogs to match what I like,
and gear inches to get the range I need to stay on the big ring for everything
south of 7 or 8% climbing grades.
Still on the fence about the 32 vs. 34. Not sure if I need to go 34. I think it
is a 2.5 gear inch diff. I don't know if that will be noticeable on sub7%
grades or not.

[RBW] Re: Sunrace make good cassettes?

2017-09-01 Thread lum gim fong
Thanks, Steve

This cassette is for my 24/40 compact cranks. So I need the 11 to get me in
the 94" range with my 650B x 40 tires so I don't spin out too, too soon on
the long downhills.
Also, on the other end of the cassette, I am a weakling rider and need the
32 cog to get up local hills and still stay in the big ring. Thus the wide
range to stay in one ring.
I use the 24 ring as a physical-gear-dump-bail-out on anything over 8%
grades so I don't blow up and can get to the top without gasping for air.
Huffing and puffing on rides too many times on 8%+ hills means me blowing
up before the ride is through. So I like to take it easy on the steep stuff.

I don't know how people do mountainous centuries with 39/53 and 11-27
cassettes. I could not even ride my local hills with that gearing.

Now with my 24-36-46 triple, I use a 7-speed 13-30. I spin out a little
early for my taste, but tolerably so with that setup. I just coast when I
get to 30mph.

this was all that was in the bottom of the beaker after 1000 mi.

Here's my clean chain in the molten speed wax.

You slide it around a bit in the molten wax, every 5 min or so, to make
sure everything gets wetted.

I have a dedicated fork and leather gloves for handling the hot waxed

I hang it on pegboard hooks until its cool, then you have to break each

Re: [RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-09-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I've used old ornamental candles -- lavender, pastel green, rose, yellow;
and cinnamon, vanilla, floral and all sorts of scents -- that a co-worker
used to scavenge for me; but these seemed to be a bit "sticky" and I'm not
sure that plain old canning paraffin that I used to find in a nearby
grocery store, wasn't better in both penetrating to the inside of the
chain, or at least keeping the outside free from anything that attracts
grit. Neither kept the chain quiet very long, though, which is why I bought
the Molten Speed Wax.

I use an old crockpot from a thrift store and yes, waxing chains will mess
it up!

Note that older crockpots had a lower "low" than modern ones, which by
Government demand, now reach a very slow simmer on "low", while before they
were sub-simmer. I don't know if this is a fire danger; I often use mine on
"high". Does anyone know?

Otherwise, many people used a double boiler of some sort: say a larger pan
full of water with a smaller saucepan in it. Me, I prefer a crockpot.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 61cm Rivendell Custom

2017-09-01 Thread cyclotourist
I really thought long and hard about it... one of them has to go. I like
this frame and ride more, but the other one fits fatter tires and that fits
my life more. I VERY much considered a B conversion on it, but ended up
riding my Salsa w/ road+ tires/wheels, and am only 1/2 way sold on the
idea. 700C works better for me, although I need tubeless for 'round these
parts. What it comes down to is that I'm just not putting road miles on.
This one came up shortest.

I can see at some point that along with this one, selling both my other Riv
and Salsa, and then getting a custom that combines the best of all three:
modern threadless steerer on a flexible fork, maybe disc brakes, clearance
for fat tires, light & flexy frame. Means another custom, but that bike
would replace three. That's all down the road a ways, as my head is in MTB
land now. I pretty much only want to ride dirt, and have been going up to
the local mountains (Big Bear) to ride there every weekend.

So yeah, as everyone can read, I've put some time and thought into this,
and am not doing it on a whim. This will be a great bike for someone, and I
think it is priced very well with all the Nitto parts and quality Dura Ace
components. Yeah, it's nine speed, but it's basically be best nine speed
you can get with Ti cassette, freehub, and TA cranks. Very well thought out
and integrated in one classic package. Just needs to find that right
someone!

Re: [RBW] Wald 257 rack

2017-09-01 Thread Shawn Granton
I've had a Wald 257 on my Raleigh Crested Butte for over a year and LOVE
IT. It is quite the heavy-duty rack, and HEAVY (I'm guessing about 8
pounds) but it definitely hauls the stuff.

As for the struts being "flimsy": I STRONGLY disagree. The struts are stout
and also adjustable, so a variety of heights can be accommodated. I'm
guessing that the struts are steel, but I won't know for sure until I go
home to check. And it also makes a convenient place to mount a light.

For those of you comparing this rack to other Wald baskets: *It's
different. *Everything is beefier, including the tubing on the "basket"
part, and the struts.

Shawn

My stunningly beautiful 2001 Joe Stark built, Joe Bell painted, custom

condition. Paint would qualify as excellent except for a few chips on the
right fork leg and one on the top tube (bar flip, errrgh).

- Lugged Nitto/Rivendell 10cm stem
- Lugged Nitto/Rivendell seatpost
- Nitto 46cm Dirt Drop handlebars
- TA Vega cranks with 110bcd spider and 48/34T TA Zephyr chain rings
- Dura Ace nine speed drivetrain
- Front shifter is a 105 model. No functional difference from DA.
- Dura Ace titanium cassette
- Dura Ace brake calipers (and I'm pretty sure levers as well)
- Dura Ace hubs with Velocity A23 rims and butted spokes (32r/28f)
- Challenge Eroica 700X3C tires with very little wear. Hard to
mount, ride like a dream! Slight surface cracking from lack of use!
- Chris King no logo headset
- King Cage Iris water bottle cages
- Shimano PD A530 pedals
- Brand new SRAM PC 971 chain

This was built up as a light-weight, go-fast bike. Thin, air-hardened
tubing for light weight and strength at the core of the build. Then I
assembled with well thought-out and light-weight components whenever
possible. There are no rack attachment options, nor have fenders ever been
installed. The Anti-Pillar of Rivendell bikes! That said, it is not a
delicate bike by any means. It is truly the best of both worlds in having a
light-weight, racy bike that you can ride where you want to!

So if the bike is so perfect, why get rid of it, you ask? As I
mentioned, it is currently one of six bikes, soon to be seven. I have been
riding almost exclusively dirt for the last few years, and when I do ride
roads, I am riding my Salsa with cross tires or set up tubeless with 650B
tires. If I do want a pure road bike, I have my other Rivendell with
thicker tubing and fatter tires. Frankly, that bike is getting nervous as
 well...

What I will miss is the absolute joy of a light-weight road bike that
this bike provides. Hopping on it and riding fast is amazing. My other
bikes (including Riv's) do not compare. I just don't do that frequently
enough to justify keeping this hanging in the garage. And I need to pay for
my newest bike (A Santa Cruz Chameleon, if you're curious).

I am the second owner, and have owned since March of '08. This was one
of multiple bikes and Rivendell's for the first owner, so he put similar
low miles on it. Always a SoCal bike, zero surface rust or corrosion.
Framesaver applied to frame. It is my second Rivendell custom, and my
fourth Rivendell of any type. One of six bikes currently. It was only used
when I was planning on relatively smooth, fast rides staying (for the most
 part) on roads.

I ran this bike a a 650B conversion as well (second photo below). It
performed perfectly with no issues. Consider that an option if you run a
B-sized fleet and want to add to it.

Price is $2,200 shipped to your door, minus saddle. If you would like
the Brooks Ti Swift saddle, let's talk.Less for pick up in SoCal, could
possibly be delivered over the Labor Day weekend.

[RBW] UnRacer community in SLC?

2017-09-01 Thread Keenan Cummings
It's kinda easy to draw a map of Riv-style riders just based on where the
bike shops are that build these kinds of bikes. We have plenty here in the
bay, and I've found a good handful on Instagram across the states.

As far as I can tell, the bike shops in SLC are your standard fare, which
often means the riding community is donning spandex and clocking metrics.
Curious if anyone knows what bike life is like in Salt Lake City and Utah
in general for the UnRacer.

The list norm is to state an asking price, and it might be a good idea to
say where you (and the bike) are located. It looks like a nice bike -- a

Best of luck with the sale.

Re: [RBW] Sunrace make good cassettes?

Deciding to get Shimano HG51 8-speed 11-32 or 11-34 and I see Sunrace

Was wondering if they are comparable in quality or not.

I'm using a customized 8 speed 12-32 Sunrace cassette I turned into a
13-32 on my Jack Taylor. I like it a lot, every bit as nice as a
typical Shimano to my eyes. Dirt cheap, too -- around $20, compared to
the over $100 the Shimano XTR 12-32, long out of production, goes for on
ebay NOS, although not as nicely finished as an XTR and heavier because
no spider, all full size sprockets bolted together.

However, I did talk to someone on a ride last week who tried to use that
same cassette and, according to her, it was impossible to get proper
indexing throughout the range because, she alleges, it wasn't spaced
correctly throughout the range. Now this puzzles me no end, as I have
never ever not even once encountered a cassette that had incorrect
spacers and didn't line up properly for indexing. I could see, however,
that if a shop ran a cable incorrectly to the rear derailleur and used
the "alternate cable routing" that alters cable pull so that, for
example, you could use an 8 speed shifter on a 7 speed cassette, that
indexing could end up wrong.

And I have very recent experience with a shop running cables wrong. My
Jack Taylor has an under-the-bottom bracket shell braezed on cable eye
for the rear shift cable, but (since it was offered only as a
single/fixed or 5 speed back in 1963, when it was made) nothing for the
left side cable. So I'm using a Campagnolo bolt on cable guide, only
using a cable on the left. But the cable kept jumping out when I was
cresting a hill. Turns out the shop's head mechanic used the so called
"alternate cable routing" (suitable, the Internet says, for bikes with
downtube shifters mounted on top of the downtube) rather than the
odd-looking but "correct" routing. When I switched to the correct
routing, no more cable jumping out.

I asked her if she still had the cassette and said I'd buy it from her,
but I never heard back. No idea if the mail went to a dead address or
she's just ignoring the mail.

But my money is on the shop messing up the cable rather than Sunrace
messing up the cassette.

My only question is, why an 11T small sprocket. IMHO unless you've got
a 17 or 20 inch wheel, they're useless. I swapped my 1st position 12
for a 13.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Rack Nuts - Pair.

Need a pair of Nitto rack nuts.
Like this:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/racks/products/nitto-rack-hardware-rack-nut-bolt-each-20184
Riv is out of stock at the moment.
I have a rear rack coming that works with a rear child seat. I'm confident
that the included mounting hardware that comes with it will not work with
my Clem.
I'm gonna use Nitto struts, probably overkill but planning on doing 4 total
struts - 2 to the typical upper rack eyelets, and 2 to the mid seat stay
eyelets.
Have the struts and a couple rack nuts, just need 2 more of the nuts.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] FS: SON28 Dynamo/XT Wheelset

2017-09-01 Thread Keith Muller
Hey all,

I have a wheelset that I'm looking to sell.

Front Hub: Schmidt SON28 Dynamo, Silver, 36H, QR
Rear Hub: Shimano Deore XT FH-T780, Silver, 36H, QR
Rims: Velocity NOBS, Silver, 36H
Spokes: Wheelsmith 14/15g Double Butted, Silver
Nipples: DT Swiss 14g Brass, Silver, 12mm
Rim Strips: Velox

Photos Available on My Google Drive:
 https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-2NeF-6iHHVeURPeTEtdmxLb3M

These wheels were built by me. I've been building wheels for over 20
years. They are true, round, dished, and tensioned properly. I've had
these wheels on my Appaloosa for about a year and a half. These wheels
maybe have seen a thousand miles of use since my Appaloosa was my back up
bike. Brake tracks are in great shape and there are many many more miles
left in this wheelsets life. $425 will get it shipped to you. I can find
you a set of skewers to go with the wheels, but you gotta ask for them and
I'm not guaranteeing they will match. I have other items for sale that I
will have in another post. Please DM me with any questions. There are a
couple RBW list members that have wheels that I have built and know of my
work.

Thanks,

Keith

I do still use one of those silly reflector thingies to keep my pants out

[RBW] Pro 5 Vis ring very out of true or out of round

2017-09-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Yesterday, for the very first time, or at least for the first time in such
a long time that I can't remember the last time, I threw a chain on one of
my Rivendell fixies: 48 t Pro 5 Vis ring, the 17 t cog on a 17/19 Dingle.
Although I was going downhills, I wasn't going fast, so there was no real
damage done, a few minor scratches on the chainstay.

I examined the chain tension carefully, of course, and notice clearly for
the first time that the ring is very much out of round: at one point in its
revolution the chain will be quite slack, at the point of highest tension
is can be too tight, with no give at all.

So this afternoon I undid all the little *&%#(^#% fiddly bolts to loosen
it, hoping I could nudge it into a more regular position on the spider;
nope, even with all the bolts loosened to the point where the ring was
flopping around, the same slack point and the same tight point.

I took the whole thing apart and will try re-orienting the ring on the
spider -- ie, lining up different bolt holes on ring with different ones on
spider, but this is very weird, and here (deep breath) are my questions:

Can rings, and older Pro 5 Vis rings in particular, just be drilled or
stamped or cut off center?

Is there a magic, lazyman technique to find the best orientation of ring to
spider without having to ploddingly try each hole in the ring with each
hole in the spider?

Thanks.

[RBW] WTB: Original Bullmoose, 150 reach

2017-09-01 Thread Joe Bernard
Anyone? I've lopped a couple inches off my Boscos and it's mostly good now, but
I still kinda prefer the flattish bar position on my Brompton and Concinnity. I
might try the Arc Bar from SOMA, but the Riv Bullmoose (out of stock) would
sure look nifty on my eCLEM L. Hook me up!

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam over Mt Tam

2017-09-01 Thread christian poppell
Thanks Phillip,

I think for me, riding alone has a lot of advantages. People seem to really
want to talk, and I don't have any pressure to be anywhere or to ride a
certain way. I met you and your gang out riding and was able to switch up
my plans without hesitation. I don't think I've ever met a stranger when on
a solo ride. Most of my conversations start around the bicycle and maybe
the fact that my appearance doesn't fit into what a typical cyclist in the
area looks like. I've met some really great and interesting people and
that's what I like about cycling is the conversations and exposure to the
world.

Also, here is a previous write up on a S24O outing on the QB:

2017-09-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
Och, aye. We have kindred journeys. "nor can foot feel, being shod." (see
below for context).

With abandon,
Patrick

God’s Grandeur
THE WORLD is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day--R05C0 8U883 Medium Mountain Mixte

2017-09-01 Thread Bill Lindsay
I have in reserve a sapphire blue Flite saddle from ~1997, and I thought
about running that to tie in with the Shopsack. With a Flite saddle on it,
I imagine I could get an even higher PMAQ (Patrick Moore Approval
Quotient). If this Niner generic saddle isn't perfect, then I'll switch to
the Flite or a Black B-17 that is also on-hand.

[RBW] Re: FS: 61cm Rivendell Custom

2017-09-01 Thread Philip Williamson
This is a beautiful bike. I'm a little shocked that it's on the block -
breaking up the twins!
I understand the need to get a shed bike out and away, though, and under a
rider where it belongs. I almost exclusively ride the last bike that got a
makeover, making me wonder why I have the other three.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help from coastal riders: how to deal with sand?

2017-09-01 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, at the recommendation of Ron McAlpin, I bought a pound of "Molten
Speed Wax" from Amazon -- $19.99, and I tossed a little something else into
the shopping cart to qualify for free shipping. I ride in very dusty and
gritty conditions and wanted something that keeps the outside of the chain
cleaner than even the driest "dry" or "wax based" drip-on lubes, but that
lasted longer than plain paraffin, which I used for years.

It's paraffin mixed with something else that is supposed to make it a more
effective lube than other types, and still keep the outside of the chain
free of dirt as does plain paraffin. They don't say what they add to the
paraffin to make it "Speed Wax." Lembas, perhaps. It comes granulated in a
1 lb bag.

After applying in a crockpot and drying, the chain feels slightly "oilier"
than when waxed with plain paraffin.

I've only put 15 or 20 miles on the newly waxed chain, but most of these
miles in very dusty dirt -- silty sand. The chain isn't as clean as with
plain paraffin, but it seems more quiet.

IME, if you want to keep the outside of your chain almost perfectly free
from sand, even after 100 miles of riding in very silty, dusty sand, plain
paraffin is the cleanest; but alas, also in my experience, it doesn't do a
very good job of lubing the insides and I had to relube every 100 miles or
even more frequently after the chain started grumbling.

Thanks Rich,

The weather's getting super nice, and I'm finishing up some projects, so
I'll some bandwidth and can maybe get a rivride together. I was up on the
PATH along Dekalb yesterday on my Trek. Really glad the rain cleared up.

Drew - I think these are really a youthful bike. I'm just barely scraping
middle age, but I suspect this bike will be the most fun bike I own.
Definitely not a bike to leave in storage.

Here's a couple more photos. The tires really transform it.

Still lots to do, but that's the idea.

49mm tires still have tons of room.

Massive clearance at the curved bridge.

[RBW] Re: How Do you like the XD2 wide/low double crank RBW sells?

2017-09-01 Thread Kieran J
I recently put what is essentially the Riv package on my wife's updated
city bike, using 170mm XD2 arms, 40/28t rings and a bashguard from Spa
Cycles
(http://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s210p3655/SPA-CYCLES-Alloy-Chainguard-110-BCD).

One thing to keep in mind about the XD arms is that they are quite wide in
the Q-factor department. Noticeably wider than other crank arms I have
around like the Ritchey Logics, older Deore models and a Sugino GP (or
something) set from the 80's, and many others. Inconsequential to some,
important to others.

In addition, the 74mm position has spacers incorporated into the spider and
are not the removeable donuts like other similar triple crankset designs.
If you're wanting to also have the opportunity to run the arms as a
straight 110mm double at some point, the XD arms are less than ideal.

Sorry for the typos. I was using the audio feature on my iPhone and forgot to

2017-09-01 Thread lum gim fong
Gorgeous pic of your crank, Ron!

So a quick email to Rivendell confirmed that the XT two triple and wide load
double are indeed the same crank spiders. And so I ordered a 40 tooth chain
ring and I'll keep the 24 that came with my triple on their stock. And I'm
going to run the 40 ring with a cassette that gives me the full range I need
and then use the 24 rang as a bell out. I got the bash card too. Hopefully
that will be great and winter when I wear long pants and then I won't have to
time my pants up anymore to keep them out of the rings. So if this works out
great then as the pocket allows I may do a short cage Direlle or in the back
and a double D Rehler in the front but only if this works out good and I'm not
going to go back to triple.

Re: [RBW] Can you feel a 1.3 gear inch difference going uphill?

2017-09-01 Thread Steve Palincsar
If you take it to the extreme, at some point when you're on the very
threshold of ability that 1.3 gear inch difference is going to be the
difference between blowing up and not blowing up, so then you will
surely see and feel the difference. When you're not out on the extreme
raggedy edge, chances are you won't be able to feel a difference that
small. The camel only feels the straw when the load is on the verge
of breaking his back, and the dam only feels that final drop of water
that causes catastrophic failure when it's already stressed to the
breaking point.
