[RBW] Jenny's bikes

2017-10-31 Thread Joe Bernard
Speaking of style (which I was on the "What is Rivvish" thread but I
accidentally deleted instead of sending and didn't try again), does anyone have
more bike style than Jenny? The transparent blue grips, the Promenade bars
excellently set as a straight line from the saddle..a stylin' 'broken foot'
scooter! I need to hang around Jenny for a while and see if I can pick up some
style vibes. Check it out:

Is that the original fork? I detect a bit more rake than a typical

When I retired Joe my work buddies pinched in and presented me with a 25

[RBW] Re: Oh Boy Got the '96 All Rounder Repainted

2017-10-31 Thread Craig Montgomery
Matt, yes, that is a custom fork, done by Ed Foster of La Suprema Cycles
here in Tucson. I drank the low trail kool-aid because I tour with a good
chunk of weight up front (roughly 60 rear/40 front) and I climb steep dirt
roads in the Sky Island country of southern Arizona. Low trail really does
work in those contexts. BUT (and this is a big butt), I also had Omar paint
the original fork just in case I do a philosophical about face. Cover your
derriere big fella :^)

If this sale had come up 4 months ago, I would've have been totally down
for this set up. I greatly admired the sage Sam's but thought they needed
the contrasting cream head tubes. I really like how they have expanded the
tire width accommodation.

I really love my Appaloosa and have put over 15k miles in the past three
months. But it would have been a much harder decision if this was on the

Andrew, I have a Rosco Mixte from the first run. You and I are basically
the same size. My Rosco fits me quite well. I'm running WTB Horizon 47c
tires plus with plenty of clearance. This is my commuting bike over a mix
of chip/seal and gravel roads. I really enjoy the float it gives me on
gravel. The chain stay length is shorter than the Clem L. I test rode a
Clem L at A1 about a year ago. It felt like a luxurious cruiser whilst the
Rosco is just a bit more lively.

2017-10-31 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Joe and William, I arranged in advance for Rick at D to paint the frame
and then return it to Riv for build up. I like the gliver color a lot but
I have a silver Joe and a similar blue Soma San Marcos and the new Mountain
Mixte which is another shade of blue. So, I already had both the blue and
silver Rivs covered at this point. I decided to have this frame painted
metallic black. Thought that it is a classic color that would go with
almost any bar and saddle colors.

[RBW] Clem L vs Roscoe Bubbe Mountain Mixte

2017-10-31 Thread Andrew Huston
I had a nice chat with Romand from Riv and Chris from A1 regarding both the
Clem L and Rosco Mixte. They were full of good info, as usual, but I
really like to hear what folks on here think.
I have a 51 Appaloosa and I just feel it may be a touch small for my
liking. It is for sale in case you were wondering. I probably can't go
wrong either way but the popular X vs Y conversation is always fun for me.
I like the larger tire clearance than the Cheviot offers and have slowly
become smitten by the step thru phenomena.
5'10" and 84 PBH. Tell/show where and how you ride them. Photos
encouraged!

Amusingly - I know Grant had no intention of these things converging - I have a

intended. They work!

As tempting as it may be, I do not need to see a FIXIE DISKY MIXTE. Maybe
it would be cool to see one with 584mm wheels, which might be called a SIX
FIFTY DISKY MIXTE. The most perverse one might be to get one custom built
in Titanium, in which case you might end up with a:

[RBW] FS: 62cm Quickbeam (with extra beausage!)

2017-10-31 Thread Brad
FS: 62cm Quickbeam (with extra beausage!)

I'm asking $500. I live in Queens, NY and I'd prefer not to ship (I'm not
great at packing & shipping bikes and I'd like the buyer to have a chance
to see all the flaws before paying).

If I don't get any local takers after a week, I'll do $500 + shipping.

I've owned this Quickbeam since 2010 when I bought it from former Riv
employee John. It's a great bike, but the 62 was always a little big for
me. My PBH is 88 and I had about 1-2 inches of seat post showing. I'll
consider getting another QB (or SO) if a smaller one pops up. I just bought
a Clem L to ride as my daily commuter.

It's beat up (particularly by RBW list standards). I'm pricing it low
enough that a prospective buyer can get it repainted, but it's rideable as
is.

I posted a folder of images here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B2RlD4bMUJSQdmdwbS1WLXYtV00?usp=sharing

I'm including everything in the photos EXCEPT the bars, stem, and brake
levers.

That includes:

frame
headset
bottom bracket
cranks (175mm XD2 triple with the guard and one chainring. It's a 170mm
crank in the photos, but I'll switch it back to the 175mm)
brakes (silver Tektro 720 with new pads)
front wheel (oldish Mavic (whatever the Open Pro replaced) rim
with basic Suzue track hub)
rear wheel (oldish Velocity Dyad rim laced to Surly fixed/fixed hub- built
by Peter White)
seatpost (Nitto S65)
All the other stuff: chain, freewheel, Schwalbe Marathon tires

Frame condition:

There are two dents on the top tube that were there when I bought
the bike. The paint is in rough shape. There are small nicks everywhere. I
tend to sit on the top tube at red lights and a long strip of paint there
is rubbed down to the grey primer. There's more significant wear where the
fenders rubbed on the inside of the fork crown, chainstays, and seat stays.
And there's wear from one of those Nitto wire guards that holds a saddlebag
off of cantilever brake cables. There are a few small rust spots, but
nothing that looks too bad. The decals range from bad condition to almost
gone condition!

All the parts on the bike on the bike are well-used, but everything is
still in good working condition.

Contact me off-list if you're interested.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
Joe is probably right that Rivendell won't likely add disc brakes to a step
through, but as a bike mechanic the thing I dislike the most about most
step-through bikes is the rear brake cable routing. A "DISKY MIXTE" would
eliminate those routing workarounds by running everything down the
downtube. Even if Riv doesn't ever build one, I want to see more DISKY
MIXTES. Ahearne has done several. This should be a link to one of them:

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-31 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Not a Cheviot, but I have similar drivetrain plans for my Clem. Well, I
should more accurately state that I've been trying to decide between doing
the Paul Melvin dingle thing with a single cog and spacers on the stock
rear wheel and Silver double crank vs. a 1x9 using a spare crank (or
1-at-a-time x 9 with the stock Silver double) and 12-36 9sp cassette.

I'd need to get a spacer kit if choosing the former but have the Melvin and
all other parts sitting around waiting. Nothing wrong with the current 2x8
stock build but I haven't been getting much mileage lately and found
the limited gearing of a single or 1x9 will be plenty for my expected
riding and I'm catching the tinkering bug again after a 6 month self
imposed moratorium.

[RBW] Re: A question about frame bags

2017-10-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
Tim talked about having seen frame bags and asked "Why?" He then went on
to provide some answers to the opposite question "Why not?"

To me, the obvious answer "Why?" is that for any diamond frame bicycle, if
you need to add a small amount of cargo weight to that bicycle, the
absolute optimum place to put that weight is inside the main triangle of
the frame. It is the best place to add weight, period. Best because A. it
affects your stability on the bike the least. B. It grows the bike zero.
and C. The bike is its own rack. There are numerous reasons why you might
choose NOT to put weight in the best place possible.

1. I have two water bottles and a pump in there, and there's no room for a
bag
2. I don't want to pay for a custom bag to fit my frame
3. The bag that would fit my frame will only carry a small fraction of my
total target cargo load, so I need someplace else anyway
4. I think they are ugly, or not sufficiently traditional looking
5. The other places to add weight that are "not as good" are, in my
experience, not that bad. I don't mind carrying panniers and/or
saddlebags, etc

2017-10-31 Thread Joe Bernard
You're a brave man, Craig. I love box-lining, but I wouldn't date try it
myself. Well done, sir!

[RBW] Roadini build and first ride report!

2017-10-31 Thread William R.

I took my first "serious" ride on my new Roadini this morning. 28 chilly,
brisk, Halloween miles! Short version is it is beautiful, awesome and
everything you expect from Rivendell. You may skip to the photos now if you
wish...

I was notified that Leo Roadini had arrived at my local FedEx location on
Friday. Work was crazy and I didn't want to be hasty so I waited until
Saturday morning to pick it up. Out of the box everything was packed very
well. My daughter assisted me with unpacking. She complained that it was
heavy, but I didn't think so... Once unpacked I took a good look at the
frame. What a beauty! Rivendell's attention to detail is so high. The new
seat lug is a thing of beauty, right down err up to the little curly cue
point where the seat post goes in. Nicer than the simple point on my
Appaloosa. The decals and gorgeous grilver paint are executed so nicely.
The welds in the places where there are no lugs are uniform and clean. I
really like the "napkin holders" on the head tube also. I think they serve
a structural purpose and are aesthetically pleasing too.

We had a lot of soccer and projects for school going on this weekend. I was
sure I would not get it built up over the weekend. Still, knowing I was
taking today off, I was hoping that maybe by Tuesday I could get it out for
at least a shake down ride. Well, as luck would have it, we got hit with a
pretty nasty east coast rain storm that was just a drencher all day Sunday.
All soccer was cancelled. Projects were done on Saturday. Besides cooking
and chasing cabin feverish kids around the house from time to time, I was
able to focus on the build.

Again, as I went about the build I was continually impressed by Rivs level
of attention. Obviously they took it out of the box and went over it before
shipping it on to me. Even the water bottle screws had been taken out and
the threads lightly greased. I could also tell that a wheel set was very
lightly installed. Alignment check? I appreciate that they took the time to
do these things. I have had a couple of other frames from other companies
that I know were built in the same neighborhood in Taiwan, if not the same
factory. I never got the impression that they had left their boxes from the
time they were packed at the factory. Luckily there were no problems with
those frames, but as time goes on, all of these things that Riv does add up
and keep me coming back.

The build went smoothly, most of the parts used were from my used parts
bin. Some of you may remember me trying to sell my Compass Rene Herse
crankset about a year ago. I'm glad nothing came of that! This is the
perfect frame for that crank. I also had the SKF bottom bracket, so I
pulled the one that came with the frame and installed those. The chainrings
are a little worn though and the cassette that I am using here has some
miles too. I recently installed a new chain on these used parts and was
experiencing some chain skip. To avoid that I put a new chain on my
Appaloosa and used the old chain here. It has maybe 1200 miles on it and it
worked perfectly. The drive train is quiet, smooth and there is no skip.
Maybe I can rehab this drivetrain a bit and get the most miles out of it by
cutting down on the miles that I put on the new chain on the Appaloosa
before I switch it over to the Roadini little-by-little over time?

When Will called me to tell me that the frame was ready to ship, he also
mentioned that it was coming with a seat post. I was happy to hear this. I
thought Grant said that posts would not be included with these Roadini's.
The only 26.8mm post that I had on hand was a super long mtb post. I didn't
really want to use that one and was contemplating cutting it. Glad the
frame came with the post and I didn't have to deal with any of that. The
only new parts that I had to get were the wheels and the brake calipers. I
had the buttery Simplex Retrofriction shifters. I also had the cockpit: 48
Noodles, Shimano levers and Nitto 9cm stem. I have two pretty used tire
choices that I need to wear out before I get any new tires. I decided to
start with the Kojaks. They are worn a little square but definitely have
some life left in them. Nominally they are 35s, but they measure 32 on the
A23 rims with tubes. I also have a pair of Jack Brown Greens that I suspect
will measure out closer to their 33.3 size. I have 3 Brooks B17 saddles.
The newest one is on the Appaloosa and is staying there. My son is using
another on his Crosscheck. The oldest one by far is this one on this build.
Bought, used and soaked multiple times since 2009, it was getting a little
saggy, cracked at the rivets and long in the tooth. Boy, was I happy to see
that big foam block protecting the fork tips in the box! I went about
cutting and stuffing per Grants instructions and it feels great now!
Chainstay protector and bar wrap are Newbaums green (the middle one I think
in Rivs photos). Lets see,

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-31 Thread Joe Bernard
Ha! I don't think Riv is ever going to do discs, but if one of the youngsters
talked Grant into it, it would be on a stout TIG'd model like the Clem. Which
currently comes as a step-through with cantis, so I don't see the need to
change brakes on the Cheviot. Chev is more of a road/country bike like the
Hilsen and Hillborne, but with a dropped toptube (droptube). I think it's
pretty cool the way it is.

[RBW] Re: A question about frame bags

2017-10-31 Thread Jeremy Till
A friend sewed me a frame bag that fits both my Clem and my Long Haul
Trucker:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPJJ9jFjzKF/
https://www.instagram.com/p/BVXIr7rBxqy/

For me, it is bar none the best bag I've owned for long day rides where you
might want to access food and layers in the bag without stopping. So easy
to reach down, undo the zipper, and reach inside on the move. I've never
used a randonneur-style front bag, but I have a hard time imagining that
it's easier with the handlebar in the way. I haven't done any bikepacking
or touring with it per se, but I have done a couple of credit-card style
overnighters, and the frame bag plus a change of clothes in a medium
Sackville ShopSack in a front Wald basket was the perfect amount of
carrying capacity.

I will say that I don't use it for commuting. My commute involves both
taking the bag on and off the bike and shouldering the bike, and the
ShopSack is a better bag for that application.

Great news, the contemporary Gran Compe brake lever hoods from Velo Orange

I hope somebody follows Will's advice and builds a two-speed Cheviot. Will
recommended a 17T freewheel with a 40/26 in front and a Paul Melvin. That

Re: [RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-31 Thread lconley
The Eno eccentric rear hub had to be positioned rear and down the get the
rear Big Ben to clear. I had to use center-pull brakes to get the front Big
Ben to clear. "Clear" means not touching. The rims are Velocity Atlas. I
moved the parts to my V1 Roscoe Bubbe and sold the Sam frame (only Riv that
I have parted with) - it actually has less clearance in the rear - I had to
true the wheels/tires to the frame to compensate for slight variances in
the tire. Clearance is a couple sheets of paper - need to keep the tire
pressure down also. Do not try this at home.

I particularly enjoy the triumph of 'cleaning' a hill that you've never

Re: [RBW] Re: A question about frame bags

2017-10-31 Thread Patrick Moore
I've never had any problem pushing a bike with rear panniers -- Ortieb
Roller Packers and Packer Pluses, or whatever the 2 full sized models are;
but my bikes have long stays, and perhaps because of my, admittedly, cool
pushing method, holding the bike with left hand at the stem/bar junction --
even up hills. That said, I have found them annoying even in sparse brush,
and in such an environment, a large frame bag would seem (I've not used a
large one) preferable.

I do use a medium Revelate frame bag to hold my kit (including bulky
mountain bike tube and 4 oz bottle of Orange Seal, as well as one of the
fatter Lezyne minipumps; but especially to carry the bulky switch and
capacitor, along with bundled cables, for the K-Lite. The bag has room left
over from all this stuff to carry, say, a sandwich and a tightly rolled up,
lightweight vest.

I like this better than the 2 top tube bags I used before -- more room, but
interferes less with the rider. The medium still allows use of both
inside-triangle bottle cages.

OTOH, I like panniers because it is much easier to put them on and take
them off; I adjust carrying capacity to the load envisioned.

Well done, Tony! I thought I saw a foreshadowing sparkle in your eye when
I was out there in September. Grabbing these moments in an appropriate

out there again in February, and I can experience some of your new found

[RBW] Bicycle Belle Ding Ding

2017-10-31 Thread LeahFoy
Hi All,

I read the list all the time but haven't said much as of late - but I mean to!
I recently got back from Ireland and I even took photos of interesting bikes as
seen on the streets there - while my husband rolled his eyes in the background
- because I knew you'd care (my ONLY biking friends are on this list).

I've been out here, riding the wheels off TBBITW (The Best Bike in the World,
if you don't know) and loving it. School is in full swing and we remain the
only members of the Bicycle Bus. I've somehow managed to add a VIOLIN to the
already obnoxious load on TBBITW, and still make it up Death Hill. I put my
pride aside last month and got my older son a rack and Wald from Rivendell so
he can at least carry his own laptop and jacket. Even just that much off my
bike makes a difference. More on that later.

I have several photos to share but I read somewhere that it is frowned upon to
put them directly onto the list email. With LTE and high speed internet, is
this still the rule? I could be obedient and use a Flickr link, but it won't be
nearly as fun without words. Someone on here knows the solution.
Thanks!
Leah

[RBW] Re: Grant in PDX 10/28

2017-10-31 Thread Brendan McD
I was there as well. I don't think John made it very far down his list of
pre-submitted questions, as many people from the audience had things to
ask. I was impressed by the quality of the questions, and Grant's
willingness to be open about everything from manufacture and geometry
theories to his future plans for products and the company. He spoke very
highly of the Taiwan factories and the bikes Rivendell receives from them,
noting especially that they all arrive exactly alike, with nothing out of
spec.

I don't think it was recorded, unfortunately.

Paul -
The upcoming Silver component(s) will/may be a replacement for the Silver
shifter, based on a Suntour thumbie (his previous project that was scrapped
and now may be back on track); and MAYBE a brake inspired by the now
discontinued CX70 (for fear the CX50 will be next on Shimano's chopping
block).
The "vehicle" is something sort of like the Kickbike in particular I
believe. A relatetively large wheeled, large tired, push scooter.

I was also very excited to win a hatchet!

[RBW] Re: Cheviot and Canti-Sam presale

2017-10-31 Thread Surlyprof
Bob,

I have an orange canti-Sam and ride both trails and roads. I do switch
wheelsets often lighter Synergies with Barlow Pass ELs for roads and A719s with
Smart Sams for trails. The Sam handles both pretty well. I'd thought about
trading to a Joe when they first came out for the wider tire clearance but
liked the Sam better on roads. I think I'd prefer the Joe on trails and for
bike packing (although Sam handles it). If I'd been debating it at purchase,
it would have been a tough decision. Since I would have had to sell the Sam to
buy the Joe, I stayed happy with what I had.

One thing I found is the cx50 brakes are a must on a canti bike if you change
wheels often. Will suggested that and it's been a great purchase.

Patrick, I think he's talking about the D-rings rattling on the adjustment

Nash-- I suggest some insulating material on the D-rings:

   - Plasti-dip?
   - Maybe you could wedge a leather washer around the adjustment screw,
   but under the D-ring?
   - Wrapping the D-rings in twine would be tricky work, but very Rivvish.

[RBW] Re: Beartown Mountain Overnight, Cheviot, Rain, Question

2017-10-31 Thread Antone Könst
It's the only 718 ride I've done, so I'm no expert, but it was really
great. Joe was prepared but laid back, the group was convivial and
diverse, and there was no pressure to go fast or slow. When my friend
took a spill, everyone had bandaids for him and no-one had unwanted advice,
that warmed my heart. And many people brought food and beer to share. So
if it's any indication of a normal ride with them I'd say do it!

Also going to take Joe's advice and get a 12-36 and XT derailer in the
short term, and save up for a beautiful new double crankset in the long
term.

[RBW] October - A big riding month!

2017-10-31 Thread Tony DeFilippo
https://photos.app.goo.gl/kMCZ6f1Q0aSKA7s32

October was a REALLY good month on the bike for me (good month all
around). I don't have alot of spare time for dedicated weekday or weekend
riding for the sake of riding so I have to stretch my commutes out and I've
never been more successful at that than this past month. Between work
travel and daddy duties I don't really have a meaningful 'average' monthly
mileage over the past 18 months or so but my 320 miles in October stands 90
miles over my previous (Sep of this year) high and 130 miles over any other
previous monthly high's. I'm using strava these days and my records only go
back to Feb '16 but since that time my riding has been pretty similar -
commutes and errands with a bit of singletrack here and there.

The miles are one way to cut it but as I was thinking about making a post I
looked at the pictures from this month and was even more pleased. For one
thing, the weather was splendid in DC this Oct and for another alot of my
rides explored some new-to-me routes and were in the company of good
friends. Two solo coffee outside's - one in the rain, a ride up to the
National Cathedral for pre-work coffee with lister Erl, two explorations of
a new route home through Oxon Hill and across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, an
early work departure singletrack-ramble through the Fort Circle Park Trail
in SE DC (who would have thought you'd startle deer in the woods within the
city limits!), a DMV car registration trip via bike... lots of good rides.

I was definitely inspired by Bill's 10x200 self-challenge over the last
couple months and while I haven't made that kind of time in my schedule I'm
really satisfied with pushing some of my own personal bests within the
confines of the 'commute'. I'm hoping to keep pushing the miles/hours in
the saddle into Nov and Dec. Work travel, vacation and other parts of life
will definitely intervene but I'll keep making the most out of the rides I
get.

Riv content - 90% of the month has been on my Saluki pictured below which
has performed splendidly. I feel more comfortable and capable on the bike
than I ever have having gotten a lot of riding in over the past 3 months.
It's really dialed in but the new tubeless Compass EL BSP's put the road
feel over the top. I'm at about 350 miles on the new tires and couldn't be
happier. Picture below is approaching Oxon Hill with the new MGM Grand
Casino in National Harbor poking up over the trees. I made it up the hill
without dismounting for LCG use for the first time on this day and while I
was still painfully slow I was absolutely thrilled with the achievement.

Re: [RBW] OT: New Bike Shed Day

2017-10-31 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Erl those sheds are a truly elegant looking solution, I love the clamshell
opening in particular. Almost evokes the back to the future delorean gull wing
doors!

It also looks like you might have room for an extra bike!

I've actually been thinking about some out of garage storage options for a
couple of my bikes as my wife and I are tackling a wooden boat kit build
(stitch and glue) this winter and there will be lots of sanding dust spread all
over. Do these are good inspiration to consider.

Congrats on the new sheds!

Tony
