Harder to find are the washers that fit the bolt AND the seatcluster hole.

Re: [RBW] Digest for rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com - 25 updates in 14 topics

2017-11-08 Thread Bill Solomon
My gawd, Scott! What bike have you with a better frame than the Ram, pray
tell? There really aren't that many Toyo frames in existence are there?

Just teasing, sorta. I bought an orange Ram from a fellow Georgia iBob last
June. I've loved the color for ages and blessed to now own one (size 54). I
have a bunch of bikes and the Ram on 38 mm wide tires is truly sublime,
blowing away the Vitus, Bridgestone, Trek, Bianchi, Cannondale and Klein in
the stable.

True there is no easy match for the metallic pearl orange paint, short of
going to a local custom car/motorcycle painter that may/may not be painting
with a similar color. They'll fill a 2 ounce bottle while cleaning out the
sprayer for a next to nothing price.

However, within just a few miles of where I live exists every premium car
dealer available in the US. But, orange isn't too common in the proper
shade (Porsche signal orange which isn't metallic, Corvette atomic orange
with is too bronzy, Lotus looks like pumpkin). Lamborghini has a color that
is pretty darn close as I see it from the road. The color is available on
the Aventador and called "arancio atlas orange metallic". There is a color
code that a couple of paint places offer in touch-up quantities. When the
weather moderates a bit, I'm going to ride the Ram over to the dealer to
compare paints. Touch-up is a process to get it right so that the old paint
blends with the new paint. Small scratches will blend in well thanks to the
light reflectivity of a bright metallic over a light grey primer, finished
with clear coat.

If only Mr. Bell had given the paint formula to Riv for future reference!

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA where all the orange leaves are now on the wet ground

[RBW] Re: Anyone know about cycling Death Valley

2017-11-08 Thread Jon Spangler
Tim,

Gorgeous country, some of my favorite ever.

Probably dry as a bone most of the time and it could also be hot, so LOTS
of water and hydration awareness is required.
The weather in the desert can change in an instant and it is unforgiving
territory.

(Just because it is mild now does not mean you will have mild weather all
during your trip.) ;-)

You may also get snowed on and/or have below-freezing temps this time of
year. And it does rain in Death Valley, too: if it does,
make sure you are out of and away from washes, gullies, canyon bottoms,
etc.. top avoid flash floods.

It can also be windy as hell, so be prepared and ALWAYS guy out your tent.
(Prepare for windy, cold, winter weather but be
ready to strip and stay cool if it heats up.

Check the weather forecasts and the long-range predictions as your
departure date approaches:
http://www.weather.gov/forecastmaps

And call the park headquarters for the latest in weather forecast, expected
conditions, and road conditions as you plan your trip.

Oh, and be prepared to have USAF jets overhead almost every day...

Enjoy!

[RBW] WTB: 26" Rivvy Dynamo Wheelset

2017-11-08 Thread adam leibow
Hi - please let me know if you have something that fits this description. I
am looking for a dynamo wheelset that will work with my girlfriend's
Atlantis. Also looking for a dynamo light, too.

Let me know what you got that fits this description:

-rivvy style (strong wheels with higher spoke count (32-36h), silver
everything (or almost everything), velocity atlas/synergy or similar?)
-dynamo - ideally it would be a schmidt dynamo but i'd entertain SP or
shimano
-7/8speed (9/10/11 should work with spacer, could be OK too)

Thanks!!!

Adam (can text me at 3109636959 for fastest response)

Re: [RBW] Re: Winter tires - studded

2017-11-08 Thread Peter White
Forty years ago I was regularly riding through the winter. Some days I was
riding a Raleigh 3 speed (full coverage fenders, so great in the rain) but
most days I was riding my Bob Jackson racing bike with Michelin Elan 23mm
tires. In snow the skinny tires did cut through to pavement and I was
generally fine. I was riding in the western suburbs of Boston and the roads
were regularly plowed, so I rarely was riding through more than about 3
inches of snow. The only times I crashed was when snow was covering ice in
a turn. Then I would crash pretty hard. But when you're 22 years old, you
tend to bounce off the pavement, so no big deal. And I was riding back
roads, so virtually no traffic to deal with.

But these days, the thought of hitting the pavement sends chills up my
arthritic spine, so I ride with studs. The studs are useless most of the
time, since the towns spread salt on all of the roads these days. But there
are those days, when you're riding home from work after dark, and it's been
a bit above freezing with the sun out, and the snow banks on each side of
the road were in melt mode for several hours, and now the temperature is
29, it's an hour after sundown, and all of that water has frozen, and your
lights don't clearly show the difference between clear pavement and icy
pavement, yup, those are the days when your ride home is very slow.

[RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

The Iditabikers use mostly derailleurs, so there must be some kind of
freeze protection. I know there are low-temp lubricants but I don't know if
they've been used on bikes. Perhaps walrus blubber on the pivots?

[RBW] Re: Winter tires - studded

2017-11-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
Rona et al,

There are two schools of thought when it comes to snow riding: thinish tires
that cut through the snow on top to bite on the “bed rock snow” beneith or
wider tires to float on top. Handling is different for each and shifting from
one to the other harrowing, but both are very doable, conditions depending,
with a lot of overlap. Only experience can tell what works for each of us daft
enough to have fun in the slop! Grin.

In my experience the only time studs are needed is ice, not snow or snowpack.
If ice is a regular issue for your rides, definately get studs. If not, they
are annoying to ride with, even for occational ice.

With abandon,
Patrick

Fascinating, Jeffery! Thanks. I called them. He said the mechanics ride all

Hello again,

I have a set of Silver/IRD thumbies with some cosmetic character for sale.
The bolts on the bottom are oxidized on the outside and one of the black
tabs has been replaced with Newbaums. They are mechanically perfect.
Originally, they come with two sets of washers--one with a stopper tab and
one without. These just have one of each style of washer, which should
still give you all the range you need. I really liked the feel and look of
these shifters, but I going to give try indexed shifting.

See the pictures for more details:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PEfKnI4Hp6BD3wCh1

$45 shipped for the thumb shifters.

I also have a set of Silver bar-end pods that I could throw in for an
additional $20. All the original bits are still there. They have a touch of
shellac on the edges, but otherwise they're basically new. Separately, I'd

What's a solid choice for a 650B tire? I have SKS P55 fenders on with

Hey all, I've found a bike shop in Finland that will ship Nokian A10 to the
states. I'm thinking about putting an order in. It does not make sense to
only order 2 due to the shipping cost so seeing if there is interest for
more. If I order 4 tires to myself it comes in at $62 a tire

That doesn't match my experience. I have A10 650B tires and Schwalbe Winter
Marathon 26x2.1". In the typical plowed-but-slushy-with-tire-tracks
conditions that we have here, the 2.1" tires on my Riv ATB float too
easily, causing abrupt loss of control in an exciting/terrifying way. The
A10s on my Cheviot and on my Protovelo(Bleriot) are far more stable. On the
Cheviot the long wheelbase really helps, too. The reality is that deep
(say, more than 4"), fresh snow is challenging for any bicycle.

[RBW] FS 58cm Rambouillet

2017-11-08 Thread Scott Loveless
Hi, guys.

I'm selling my 58cm Orange Rambouillet. $1000. It will be packed at
the LBS, buyer pays actual shipping from 17011. Local pickups are
fine, too.

Photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/CjXMrpmPRKyMh16k2 If you have
any trouble accessing the photos, please let me know. I'd be happy to
attach them to an email. If you'd like to see something that I've
managed to not photograph very well, I'm happy to take more pictures.

First, the bad. The top tube was repaired by a previous owner. This
was obviously a professional repair. The new paint is blended nicely
with the original. However, as most of you know, this particular
orange is nigh impossible to match. In good light, if you know what
you're looking at, it's pretty obvious. You should be able to see it
in the photos. The untrained eye would probably never notice. The
Jack Brown greens are nearing the end of their life. While there's
plenty of tread material, the sidewalls are starting to feel a bit
papery. They're certainly not unsafe, but will likely need to be
replaced within the next year or so. If you'd like, I'd be happy to
swap them for some new 28mm Panaracer Pasela tires.

The very good: The wheels on this bike are really nice. Chris King
hubs laced to Velocity Aerohead rims. 8/9/10 speed compatible freehub
body. My kids call this bike "the angry hornet".

Currently, the bike is set up with a 9-speed drive train. Dura-Ace
rear derailer and Dura-Ace down tube shifters; indexed/friction
switchable. The rings on the Specialites crank say 9/10 speed.
Shimano 600 front derailer.

Blackburn Chicane cages. Ultegra headset, Nitto stem. Noodle
handlebar, 46cm. White cotton tape with Ardbeg plugs. Tektro levers.
Shimano calipers with Kool Stop salmon pads. I believe the seat post
is a Kalloy or similar. The B17 Special is well worn and shows it's
age. The copper rails are tarnishes and there's some superficial
cracking around the rivets. I put some VO goop on it when I got the
bike, and then put it on a shelf in favor a different saddle.

The pedals are not included, but if you need something I have a box
full of quill pedals. I'm happy to include them if you want.

If you're interested, but want different components, please let me
know. I have a pretty big stash of parts. For example, I could swap
the rear der for a 10-speed 105, cassette for an 11-30 10-speed and
the 9-speed down tube shifters for 10-speed bar ends. I could fit a
Sugino triple if you're more interested returning this bike to an
original configuration. Just let me know, and we'll work something
out.

I can accept Paypal, Google Wallet or cold, hard cash.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Binder bolt and nut specs?

2017-11-08 Thread Jim Bronson
I hadn't tried them in a while but a few years back I went to Home Depot by
my old house and they were pretty well stocked up with all sorts of socket
cap hex bolts that were useful on bicycles, so I stocked up. I never
bought an M6, I guess, because I didn't have one in my collection big
enough for the binder bolt.

You're right though, this time they sucked. They didn't even have any M6
nuts. There was a space for them but they were sold out. They had the
Nyloc kind but I wasn't about to use those. Lowe's had the nuts, and also
an M6-25. I used that rather than a 20. Maybe could use a 20 and it would
mount flush. the 25 sticks out about an eighth of an inch, which is not a
big deal to me.

In case you were wondering about the Why, I sheared off the binder bolt on
my Redwood a couple of years back. Ever since then I have switched the
binder bolt back and forth between my Custom and my Redwood depending on
which I wanted to ride. I finally decided this was a completely ridiculous
situation and to do something about it.

I second the Ace Hardware suggestion.
Beware of using a stainless nut with a stainless bolt unless you use
anti-seize, they can gall. A metric class 8.8 (~SAE grade 5) or 10.9 (~SAE
grade 8) bolt works well if you don't want stainless.

Oh, I see compass has a naches pass ~44mm -- I think that pretty much
solves my problem. It'd be interesting to know if it can fender a 52-54mm
tire though.

I really like the sound of a Fellowship of Rivendells: "The autumn tour

[RBW] Re: Bicycle Belle Ding Ding

2017-11-08 Thread islaysteve
Leah, I'm so happy to hear that your dog continues to do well. It's so
hard for us sometimes to know how our pets feel, but yours is giving you a
pretty clear message! Regarding your upcoming court date, I hope you're
not stressing too much over it. I'm not an attorney, but I did have a
chance to testify in a somewhat similar situation involving a motorcycle
accident which I witnessed. Thankfully no one was killed and the cyclist
was recovering. Although my testimony clearly helped one party, the
attorney for the other party did not attack me or question my competence in
any way. It was all quite civil. I would hope that your case is as open
and shut. As you say, the testimony of the other witness will hold even
more weight. I know that you will come out just fine and will continue to
be a great example to all of us. Keep the bus rolling, Steve

[RBW] Re: Winterizing Ideas?

2017-11-08 Thread ascpgh
Patrick, In the winter I find that narrowing my gear choices is a proactive
winter conditions strategy. If the chain is on a cog, the slop is less able
to pack in enough to for it to become problematic so I change gears as
little as I can. I'm service-averse of my own bikes and choose parts
accordingly to avoid a low ride time/service time ratio. My time in the
business made me savor my riding and not particularly finding tonic in
their service. I do my own service/maintenance and enjoy work well done, I
just don't invite more than necessary with untested or off-label use of
components, parts and pieces.

My winter riding situation s different than yours since I'm mostly on the
roads, complicated by a slop of snow and salt/melters. Their strategy is to
use melters as long as possible to avoid dropping the plow blades on the
pavement. The wheel-flung slurry is amicable to freezing onto surfaces,
metal especially. Fenders, fork legs, chainstays, rear derailleur and cogs
all targets. Over a decade of this I've balanced my approach to permit the
most trouble free operation despite the conditions. Not that I'll be 30
miles from home, but that I'll be late to work and potentially cascading
repercussions. "When (you) absolutely, positively have to get there..."

My only big accommodation was getting a frame with disc brakes. The salted
slop of winter roads made this much more distinct improvement than many
other circumstances of which I've read reports. Away from the melters, it
is not as pronounced and I do come to consider doing away with them and
going back to a daily rider using rim brakes. Then is snows and the city
salt trucks got going.

Looking to buy one soon for my wife. Just wondering if anyone who owns one has
fendered a rat trap pass w reasonable clearance? I’m trying to decide what
tires to build around. I’d be happy w anything 40-50mm ish.

Thanks,
