2017-12-03 Thread lum gim fong
I.never thought I would EVER ss ride.
But I recently changed to DT shifters on my bike. Too lazy to frequently reach
down and shift, I shift less than ever, learning to ride in easier/harder gears
without blowing up my legs. I can now see how one could manage ss riding in
hilly terrain. Mega-slow cadences, but with relaxed legs. Let the bike
carry/coast you as much as poss. Don't think about speed.
I might actually try single speed sometime.

[RBW] Up Your Vis Game

2017-12-03 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Good thinking! Nighttime visibility is extra important in rainy Portland
because everyone's windshield is fogged up.

I got a $12 light (USB rechargable!) for my hub that allows people to see me
from the side. I commute on lots of side streets and this really helps. This is
my first season trying it, so we'll see how long it lasts. So far so good
though.

Here's a picture: https://www.instagram.com/p/BbabBDbhot2/

Here's the light:

[RBW] Pass Stormin’ n’ Scorchin’ Spectacular!

2017-12-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
Philip, I did pass on it. Sorry. My sense of humor doesn’t always translate via
internet. Or in person, for that matter. Grin. Build the wheel. Ride it. Love
it! Grin.

Andy, Cotton Analogy thrives in wet 50’s and lower. We almost never get wet and
warmer here, but wet 60’s is a bit warm when riding, wet 70’s is let the shirt
get soaked and delight in the oddity of warm rain! Grin. With my fishnet
baselayer, I just wear a cotton flannel over the fishnet to climb from 40’s
down to 20’s, and the jacket goes on if it’s cloudy or windy at my
contemplation stop (aka pipe and coffee). The whole trick with that system is
moisture management, and the fisnet give you leway to get the insulative layer
a bit damp without it freezing you when you stop.

With abandon,
Patrick

Prior to this, I just did the figure 8 thing. The trick is pulling the tape

[RBW] FS/FT: Hub Area Rack & Hub Area Bags

2017-12-03 Thread Jeff Lesperance
(cross-posted to iBob)

I'm in the process of trying to simplify my bike stable down to two bikes
and associated racks and bags, which in this round of weeding has made my
Hub Area Rack and Hub Area Bags surplus.

The rack has been mounted on my Rosco Bubbe v.2 (which will soon find
itself on the sale block) and has seen very few miles and nothing
resembling abuse. I'm offering it for $135 shipped CONUS.

The bags, olive fabric, have been mounted on the bike for about half of the
few miles the bike has seen, though they do show some usage where I sewed a
coffeeneuring patch on each flap and have since removed said patches. I
also modified the bags by installing Ortleib mounting hardware on them
because threading a strap and lashing and de-lashing the bags to the rack
each time I want to use them, which was initially planned for daily
commuting, was not tenable. The rails can easily be removed. I'm offering
the bags for $115 shipped CONUS.

Prices are negotiable and I will come up with some type of discount if you
buy rack and bags together or if you're local to the DC metro area and we
can meetup and avoid shipping.

I'm interested in trading for bikepacking style bags, front, frame and
saddle mounted if you have any of these in surplus.

[RBW] Silver Shifter 2 project revived

2017-12-03 Thread dougP
Interesting piece on the blug about the Silver Shifter 2 project coming
back to life. Prototypes in house at RBWHQ, with photos.

"It’ll work fine on the downtube and better (than ever, than original
SILVER shifters) as a thumby or a bar-end shifter, because of the new
shape, heavily influenced by the 1983 SunTour XC thumb shifter. Slight
differences."

IIRC, Grant had posted something a while back about this project fizzing
out for unstated reasons, so it's good to see it coming back to life. I
was pretty interested so looking forward to seeing the production version.
These look to have much more character than the stand-by Shimano bar end on
Paul thumbie mount.

Second and third - that’s my experience of fixed off-road, too. It’s an

Re: [RBW] Supple tires and rim fit trouble

2017-12-03 Thread Surlyprof
I've struggled with Barlow Pass on Synergies. The issue wasn't getting them
on, it was getting the tire to seat evenly all the way around when inflated.
Based on previous threads, I believe this is a rim issue. As for A719s,
they've been very easy every time. I was mounting Smart Sams and Mondials on
those rims.

[RBW] Re: Pass Stormin’ n’ Scorchin’ Spectacular!

2017-12-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
Aye, Craig and Ian, me first adult foray into fixed (and now just normal
riding, how quickly things change to “normal”! Grin.) The trike I used to
deliver “pizza” to my parents in the backyard was fixed, so not my first
experience. Grin.

Uh oh, Philip, did I inspire my way out of an old threaded fixed eccentric hub?
Fantastic! Build it, ride it, love it! Grin.

Rich, it’s funny, but it no longer feels like underbiking, especially with the
knobbie Steilacoom tires. It’s now just biking. Grin.

Oh, there’s been an adjustment period. And I’ve a lot to learn. I’ve a ways to
go yet on rock and root pedal navigation in the various narrows. I’m settling
in wonderfully to the long descents. Nearly twenty miles of mountain pass
descending is a lot of backpedaling. Grin. Practice makes perfect, and I’m
definately improving. I’m finding that the “spin out” point has a surprising
way of holding itself in balance, perhaps because the pedals have to push the
weight of my legs round? Lots of nuance, and the bike is an amazing teacher.

Random comments over the last few days, from the trail and the Pikes Peak
Highway, as there have been a very large number of comments compared to usual,
though the Quickbeam doesn’t look any different. “You can bike this snow and
ice?” “Now THAT’S climbing!” “You’re my hero! Boy. How often do you ride this?
You’re my hero!” This last one from a robustly rotund man at the overlook on
the Pikes Peak Highway, who rambled onto the road to meet me in his excitement.
I laughed and suggested he may want to pick a higher benchmark. He wasn’t sure
what to do with that, but kept pronouncing I was his hero as he ambled back to
his car. I was laughing for the for the next several miles, which on that climb
is about 30 minutes. Grin.

That whole “you MUST use pedal retention to ride fixed!” law? Bunk. Doing just
fine on spikey platforms. Feet haven’t flown off once. I’m guessing here, but
I’m likely doing 180-200 pedal rotations per minute at the spinout. Climbing
I’m as little as 30 in places, but that’s right on the edge of LCG is faster.
Grin.

All in all, I’m like a duck to water with fixed riding. It’s so intuitive and
self evident. The comments I’ve seen about “you have to always be focused”
“It’s intense” make no sense to me. That’s always the case. But I find fixed
riding more engaged and contemplative and flowing. Delicious!

With abandon,
Patrick

Damn, a real shame. Their Shak Lite jersey is one of my favourite pieces of

It's fun to get reflective!

I use this vest (the basic orange one on top):
https://rusa.org/cgi-bin/storedept_GF.pl?catid=2

I put reflective tape on my rims and cranks, and I have a rear tail light
that has a reflector built in (Spanninga Dyno tailight).

I also have a J&G rain jacket with reflective material on wrists and back.

Check to be sure your reflective material stays reflective when wet. Some
don't. Not sure if mine does. I'll have to check.

There's a product Stan's No Tubes sells just for this problem as I've
encountered this with setting up tubeless. Can't remember the name but a
small bottle with applicator rubbed on the rim/tire and whatever the liquid
really does help with getting the tire on. Take a look.
