[RBW] Bar wrap direction

2018-01-01 Thread Philip Williamson
I’d follow their directions and see how it goes. I wrap end-to-stem, inward
toward the bike (I think - I did it today, but I always have to look at the
bike to make sure). For a while I did the trick where you wrap ends-to-levers,
and stem-to-levers, but the only advantage was no “finish” tape or twine near
the stem. I wrapped stem-to-ends once, and tucked the tail into the bar once,
and it was fine but not a game-changer.

I'm currently using a Mark's front rack on my Rosco Bubbe mixte but would
like something with a larger load rating. If you've got a big Nitto front
rack and want a small one, instead, let's talk trading. Of course, I would
expect to pitch in some boot.

[RBW] Silver Shifter question

2018-01-01 Thread Surlyprof
I’m using them on an 3x8-speed Hillborne with Albatross bars and they’re
working out great on the outside of the bars. I did try them on the inside of
the grips and didn’t like the way the cable ran under front curve of the bars
since I like that as a second grip area. They are very long (compared to the
Sunrace shifters). I have a 1/2-3/4” gap between the grips and the clamp.
Don’t forget the adapter.

Re: [RBW] Bar wrap direction

What Olaf said. Wrapping stem-to-ends can help if your hands tend to slip
forward on the bars—your hands catch on the edges of the tape, which
unfortunately get worn and frayed more quickly.

All of my bikes are wrapped end-to-stem.

[RBW] Happy New Year and two new products from Velo Lumino!

2018-01-01 Thread somervillebikes
Happy New Year from Velo Lumino!

While I've been hunkering down in the sub-zero temps of New England, I've
finally had time to update the Velo Lumino website with a couple of
exciting new products.

A few months ago I introduced a new dynamo taillight for seat-tube mounting
, styled after the
fender version of the taillight. Today I'm happy to announce the seat tube
version is also available in a black anodized finish in addition to the
original polished finish. The seat tube taillight requires a brazed-on M6
threaded boss (not included). Like the fender version, these are entirely
waterproof and also incorporate a few changes from the original fender
version to make them essentially bomb-proof. $119 for either finish and
both are in stock at velolumino.com
. (The fender
version of the taillight is sold out and will remain sold out for the
foreseeable future).

Next, a novel widget is introduced into the Velo Lumino line. This one is
the brainchild of Tom Matchak (Tom is the other half of Velo Lumino and the
"TM" in the "TMAT" stem switch that we collaborated on).

Tom's new widget is called the PlugNut
, and it's a novel and lighter
(by 4g!) alternative to a daruma bolt. It's a press-fit aluminum cylinder
for 1" butted steel steerers and it has an integrated stainless M5 threaded
bore to support a fender to the fork crown. Once installed, it's permanent
and supports a fender mounted all the way flush to the crown without the
need for an external bracket, or a daruma bolt and brake bolt. For bikes
with uncomfortably tight clearances, the PlugNut is an easier solution than
a Daruma because the only intrusion into the fender space is the shallow
hex head of the M5 bolt (included). Additionally, the PlugNut has two small
bores that allow for drainage and also for wiring for a TMAT stem switch
 (also in stock at
velolumino.com). If your brakes require a brake bolt, or if you have a
front rack, you can drill through the narrow walls of the installed PlugNut
using the fork crown's brake bolt holes as pilots.

Daruma versus PlugNut:

PlugNut installed:

Tom has additional photos of the PlugNut illustrating its installation and
also a couple of cool videos on flickr
.

The PlugNut is $22 and is in
stock.

Best,

[RBW] Re: Silver Shifter question

2018-01-01 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I use that combination and love how they work. That said, I have only used
them for old-school 8-speed configs and don't have a ton of miles on any
particular set. That said, set up as bar top shifters they are the most
accessible, intuitive and best tactile feel shifters I have ever used. I
currently use that set-up (Silver shifters + adapter + Paul Thumbies) on a
Cheviot but have also used them on a Joe A. I did not have the right size
of Thumbies (the discontinued 26.0's) or I would have used them for the
drop bar set-up.

Two caveats of notes are that Paul discontinued the 26.0 size thumbies and
I have had times when it was hard to find the adapters. I also have to
tighten them every once in awhile but certainly not often.

[RBW] A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2018-01-01 Thread Marc Irwin
I've had an LHT which i upgraded with a Hunqapillar frame. There is quite a
difference in handling. I always felt I was"turning" the LHT rather than
leaning through the turns on the Hunq. The Hunq handles more like a mountain
bike.
I've since bought a Hillborne since I wanted a lighter, faster version of
the Hunq. It is, and has become the most ridden in the stable. It will handle
a commuter load easily and be more fun than the LHT.
I haven't ridden a Homer but Grant has said he needs to look down to remind
himself which he is riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike Trainer Thoughts

2018-01-01 Thread ascpgh
Every trainer, bike, rider and manner of use creates its own situation. I
used one to rehab a leg before I could walk or ride for real.

I found the stench from the rear tire friction on the resistance roller
contributed to shortening my sessions. I was nothing near a board track
pursuit rider making my frame seem liquid in response to the waves of input
from my physical awesomeness, but I did pour sweat which I addressed with
rags and towels to keep off the hardware and floor.

I took it outside in cooler weather to mitigate the sweat and reduce the
irritation of others at home since that thing with its fan resistance was
loud.

I wouldn't go so far as to attach the demise of that bike frame ('86
RockHopper) with my use in that trainer, but it tore a chain stay with a
crack emanating from the margin of the bridge weld that progressed its way
in a spiral around the stay. No phase of my riding on that bike before
failure was anything near what would have been challenging to its
construction.

Late (after I could walk and ride again) I got some Tacx 4" rollers for my
indoor sessions. I found the response of the bike to my pedaling input more
realistic and mentally engaging. After a while I upgraded to an early
NiteRider headlight and red blinkie tail light. Much happier for my
situation.

Hope all the input helps you reach the best outcome for your situation
Jonathan.

[RBW] FS: Vintage steel Burley Piccolo trailer and Moose Rack, $175 +

2018-01-01 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
The perfect companion to any Rivendell, this MUSA Burley original is
superior to the imitators that grab your seat post, adversely affecting
handling. This was one of my best ever bike purchases, you won't regret it!
$175 plus bikeflights cost--I think it can ship in a frame box, so should
not be too bad. Inquiries off list please. Cross posting to iBOB. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Happy Hogmanay! (Scottish New Years)

2018-01-01 Thread ascpgh
Fantastic Patrick. Thanks for the snapshot of your ride. Seldom do map
points suffice to tell the story as well as your words and pictures.

It's amazing what commonality we can all find in the riding experiences you
illustrate, be it the 10°F flat, the terrain on fixed or the healing
potential and respite of a seemingly taxing activity!
