[RBW] ENO eccentric rear hub

2018-01-02 Thread Ruben Flores
Hello, R and R on this wheel is the same as any bolted axle wheel, except you
first have to untension the chain and tension after installation.

Loosen axle bolts, use box wrench to move eccentric axle, chain will go slack,
remove wheel from dropout.

To install reverse the process.

I appreciate your appreciation - one more cool part - when I fired up the
second cork grip, the smoke started billowing out the open hole on the
other side of the handlebar. I've never had a handlebar smokestack. When
the wife and kids got home, they kept asking what that funny smell was. I
just left it alone.

Alcohol will loosen the adhesive on most double stick tape. If you can squeeze

sure it doesn’t mar the finish.

[RBW] Head Badge

2018-01-02 Thread Christopher Murray
Rivendell has this info. There was an article on the site about 12 or so years
ago. I’m pretty sure they recommended using dental floss. Get it between the
badge and tube and work your way down slowly and carefully. The badge can be
put back on with 3M double sided automotive tape— the stuff to put your Honda
badge back on your Honda. Any automotive parts store should have it.

I’d definitely call Riv to verify.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Bar wrap direction

2018-01-02 Thread lum gim fong
I have found end-to-stem cotton bartape/twine/shellac gets loose after a
year of riding for me. The twine and cotton rotates like a solid cuff when
it gets loose. Adding shellac gets it to stick to the bar again.

I have since gone to blue lizard skins and twine looks good on it, too. But
again, the twined part is loosening in less than a year. Rotates a little
like a solid cuff piece.
Next time I might wrap from the stem back to not have to use any holding
device on the end.
I like the Lizard Skins blue. It matches the Rambouillet well.

[RBW] Re: A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2018-01-02 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Drew, I have no experience with either of the models you mention and not
sure how soon you realistically plan to make the change or when you plan to
make the trek from Seattle to Portland but have you considered taking the
trip on your existing LHT (which would seem more than suitable as a touring
specific model) and then while in Portland swing by Rivelo for some test
rides to compare side by side (assuming they'll have something your size?)

Unless the Seattle to Portland trip is some kind of organized and faster
paced randonneur type event? If so, then I guess that further explains
your desire for something more lively but if you just plan on casually
taking the trip on your own then I stand behind my suggestion.

I've often been tempted by that which I do not have, and I too have
considered saving up for an AHH (64cm Sam was Waterford made and no longer
an option anyway so my Sam vs AHH question = 67cm AHH by default)

Although I aspire to live the one or two bike life it remains to be seen.
I've often pondered the question of what ONE bike may satisfy all my future
needs but I know I still have more to learn and a few more experiments with
existing projects I need to get out of my system before I'll be ready to
make any firm decisions. It was wisely suggested to me to keep what I've
got for at least another year, ride what I think I could live with, and if
needed, change what I ride to suit my changing needs/tastes. So far, this
is exactly what I'm doing... but this isn't about me, it's about
you... and by borrowing the same logic it made me wonder why not ride the
LHT to Portland first?

Well used, but still warm and both reasonably clean. Tag reads something
like "Seirus Innovation". Unstretched dimensions, profile view: 10" long
and 7" high.

Takem both if you can usem both, but don't takem if'n you cain't usem.

I'll pay postage; you be patient.

I find that if, in cold weather, I don't keep my neck warm, I get a sore
throat, which devolves seriatim into sniffles, hoarsness, heavy sore
throat, sinus infection, and thence to severe pulmonary infection, but I've
also found that a nice, wool scarf works better than these -- I often wear
a wool scarf to bed, and I had a nice Royal Stewart cut in half lengthwise
to use while riding -- warmth without the bulk. Thus, these are yours if
you can use them.

iBob member last year. There's something about it, the narrower tires or
the wheels or the tubing, that makes this bike feel a bit snappier than any
of my Rivs. Plus, the Bailey Falls Blue is an awesome color, and the DT
decal is a cool tri-color resurrected today on the Roadini.

I own a Bleriot too and going from it to the Heron is like going from Land
Rover to Jag; both good in different ways.

And a very good one; great fun. "Penticleat." That sounds a whole lot more
real-life than so many "real life" corporate names I come across, which
sound like very bad satire. "Cydifex" the new antibiotic.

Personally, I think the world needs an April Fools for each month of the

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Bike Options for Seat Heigh of 65

2018-01-02 Thread Garth
Howz 'bout the 44.5 Atlantis, a 48cm Sam or 47cm. Homer along with the 47
Roadini mentioned ?

Lots of choices !

As fas as the Trek frame, comparing bike fit reach is not so simple as
measuring the TT alone . Different seat tube angles alone will skew the
comparisons, and I bet the Trek has a steeper STA than any Riv does. Them
you get into seatpost setback and rail length and you've got yourself into
a bit of pickle :) You'd be best consulting with Riv. first.

[RBW] Rivendell Bike Options for Seat Heigh of 65

2018-01-02 Thread Jonathan D.
I was thinking that for 2018 I would like to get my wife a new Rivendell. I was
thinking of something like the Sam Hillborne, since I think it is one of the
best value, all around bikes Riv sells. She does have a 45 Clementine, but I
think that fills a different niche. I measured her bike seat height on an old
aluminium women's Trek 1000 and it is 65 cm and her TT is 50 cm. That is a
small bike and she definitely couldn't fit a 51 Sam. Besides a custom, what Riv
bikes do you think would work for her? I mostly want to start keeping an eye
out in case one shows up on the list or craigslist in 2018.

I thought that maybe a black mountain cycles Road bike could work as well but
the 52 might be too big.

I like my Lems 925 shoes but haven't ridden with them yet. Crazy cold in MD
right now keeps me off-bike. Too cold for me. I don't know how Patrick does in
in Colorado. Maybe Colorado 15 and Maryland 15 ain't the same.

But I have always been a spring/summer weather lover.

Anyway, I hope the Lems will be good for riding. Hopefully back up in the 40's
soon so I can ride again.

[RBW] Re: Bike Trainer Thoughts

2018-01-02 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
+1 for going second-hand, especially if you aren't yet sure what features
you'll prefer. We opted for something new and in the middle of the pack
but made sure it had all the features we wanted and nothing we didn't
want. We wanted it to be quiet, stable, no frills and easy to set-up/take
down. The CycleOps we went with checks all those boxes and didn't have all
the electronic gadgetry we knew we wouldn't use, but had we been able to
find a used higher end but similar model for the same cost or less we may
have been willing to go for it. If my wife decides she'd like to take the
same bike out on the road it's only a matter of undoing the rear axle
(using the helpful levers like Ted referenced) and putting a rear QR wheel
back on... as long as the cassettes match so your shifter/derailer
adjustment remains the same.

Just this fall a friend offered us their no longer used trainer... I was
tempted to take them up on the offer and compare the models to see which
we'd actually prefer but the reality is that we simply don't have the space
and I'd personally prefer to get out and ride in the cold anyway so it
would just continue collecting dust.

Clever! Thanks for the reminders of the versatility of twine and bar tape.

[RBW] Bar wrap direction

2018-01-02 Thread RonaTD
Both! I wrap from the end to the brake lever and from the stem to the brake
lever. No twine or tucking necessary. Works especially well if doing a weave.

[RBW] Re: A Homer Hilsen vs LHT - Will I notice a difference?

2018-01-02 Thread Surlyprof
I absolutely love the AHH but can +1 the Hillborne. It’s a great blend of
solid and lively. I bought mine to upgrade from a Cross Check that I had tried
to make into a budget Riv. The CC was a good, fun and very solid bike that
took 42 Schwalbes with room to spare. I always had a few issues with the Cross
Check, though. One, it was both heavy and stiff. Even though the CC was
supposed to be livelier than the LHT, I wouldn’t call it lively. Second, the
geometry kept me from getting the bars above the saddle. I even bought an
uncut fork to raise them which made for an awkward looking stack. The last big
problem was toe overlap (toverlap?). Probably won’t be a problem with the LHT.
Ultimately, by the time I replaced the CC with the Hillborne, I’d spent just
as much money creating my “budget Riv” as I would have just buying the Sam
initially. And, the Hillborne has been a better fit and a much more fun,
lively road bike, fire trail bike (different wheelset) and commuter that
carries 20#+ without a complaint.

Good luck with your decision.
John

[RBW] Bar wrap direction

2018-01-02 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Agreed regarding thick cork tape not playing nice with the tuck and plug
method. But sounds like Rivet has sized their plug specifically to allow this
so like Philip suggested I’d give it go with their recommended method first and
see how it works for you.

One thing I found for direction of wrap however is that for the “roof shingle”
effect it could depend on where you spend most of your time on the bars if
running drops. if you spend more time IN the drops then end to stem will have
the shingle facing front going into the hooks but same direction of wrap will
then have the shingle facing rear up on the ramps... so if you are more of a
hoods and ramps rider you may want to wrap stem to end to get that front facing
overlap up top.

I discovered that being an issue only when using some cotton tape for the 2nd
or 3rd time and with the tackiness limited from the loss of glue... after only
a few rides the tape was getting spread apart up on the ramps and it became
less an issue after I redid and reversed the wrap since I knew I’d be on the
ramps more for that particular build.
