[RBW] Re: [BOB] Advise me: what powdercoat color for Riv #2, the '99 Joe Starck gofast?

2018-02-09 Thread Chris Cullum
Yes, I meant to specify a paint match on the dropouts as opposed to a
contrast. The dropout area is relatively inconspicuous and a slight
mismatch will be not super obvious. They are also subject to chips etc from
wheel removal, chain drop etc. From my experience powder coat is never as
nice as good wet paint, let alone Joe Bell paint. It's less of an issue
with tigged or fillet frame but those lugs certainly warrant the deft touch
of JB. I'm partial to blue bikes and it's a pretty fetching combo you have
already. If you powder coat you're going to lose the original Riv decals
etc if that matters to you.

[RBW] Re: 60/62cm Quickbeam Owners: Head Tube Length?

2018-02-09 Thread sameness
Thanks for the info and input!

Long story short, I bought what was purported to be a 60cm Quickbeam, and I
am trying to confirm known good measurements.

I am guessing everything measured by the seller was largely eyeballed,
rounded down and/or CTC, not CTT...

(Anybody wanna buy a nice green 62cm complete?)

I'm all set, thanks all!

I'm going to guess ~2cm taller, since the QBs all had the same ST and TT
angles AFAIK, and the TT on the 62 is only 1cm longer. It's none of my
business but if you're trying to dial-in handlebar height, you have to be
careful with HT length measurements without also considering axle to crown
distance (which I think is about 39cm on the QB- much larger than on many
older frames with less tire clearance).

enough lighter that it looks perfect.

[RBW] Re: Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-09 Thread Ryan Merrill
For the most part I no longer ride on the road. I live too far away from
work to realistically commute, so unfortunately that activity was shelved
when we moved here. I've had a couple of bad personal experiences riding
with vehicles (yelled at, honked at, intentionally hit, bottle thrown at
me), local cyclists have had a slew of others, and we've had a death of a
cyclist by a man who did not have a license because he was legally
blind and another doctor left for dead after being hit on his tri
bike...thankfully alive but had to quit his practice because of the head
trauma suffered when he was hit. Locally, it has just become too dangerous
and I opted out.

I do all my riding now on trails or gravel roads, which thankfully we have
plenty of.

[RBW] Re: Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-09 Thread Garth

Patrick , use universal hand gestures common to human beings standing in
person next to each other , no one understands "bike signals" these dayze.
Think "talking with my hands". It's gotta be demonstrative, with emotion
none of us are machines, period.

Point left with the left hand, right with the right. To gesture slow down,
turn your body in the direction of the driver(eye contact if you can) and
give a gesture like you're pushing a wall (palm out, fingers extended), and
hold it briefly like you're telling them to "back off".

If I "take a lane" with a car behind me, I make a gesture like a emphatic
"hammer slam down" with a pointed finger downward to the lane, and I MEAN
IT. "Here I am, this is mine now, back off" .

[RBW] Wisconsin iBOB Unmeeting: July 13-15.

2018-02-09 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
***Sorry for the iBOB crosspost!***

Mark you calendars - Join your fellow BOBs and other likeminded folk for
the Wisconsin iBOB Unmeeting happening July 13-15.

Here's a rough itinerary:
Friday: Gather in Madison, geek out for a bit, and then ride about 45 miles
to Governor Dodge State Park (or simply meet at the park).
Saturday: Choose a route that fits your fancy for a day ride from GDSP.
Sunday: Another day ride, or return to Madison via rail trail. Possible
brewery stop along the way.

Basically, we've set up the ride as an S72O from Madison to GDSP and back,
but people are welcome to go directly to GDSP.

Challenging routes from Governor Dodge will likely head west into the
Driftless region; which is generally just ridiculously bucolic, while being
quite hilly and full of great roads (both paved and gravel). The roads
south of the park and the nearby unpaved rail trail provide equally nice
options for flatlanders. We'll provide route suggestions via ridewithgps at
a later date and will have photocopied paper maps available at the camp
site. Otherwise, the ride is unsupported.

Harald has more details on his blog
. Hope some of you
can make it!

Kevin
Madison, WI

*Oh, I wanted to mention that this is a family friendly event. And, the
park has some excellent options for swimming, paddling, and hiking.

[RBW] Re: Have a Sub 20lb Roadeo?

2018-02-09 Thread Brewster Fong
I agree in part. A Roadeo is currently listed at $2600 for the frameset,
although if you read the text, it is listed at $2250, so maybe the price
increased. However, they only have like a 63cm in stock and I'm not sure
what their eta for new ones are.

So what else can you get for $2600? Well the 2018 Trek Emonda SLR frameset
price has actually gone down, I believe it is now made in Taiwan (Giant?)
instead of Wisconsin, to about $3000:

https://www.trekbicyclesuperstore.com/product/trek-emonda-slr-frameset-305218-1.htm

However, there are other steel builders out there who are cheaper like
Roland Della Santa who I believe charges between $2000-2500, but you get
what he wants to build.

Anyways, Roadeo is a good choice for those who like it. Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Fender width on a Roadini

2018-02-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
My thought would be to wait until the bike is built and can scope out your
clearances. Medium reach brakes and 28mm tires are a good combination for
normal fenders. My expectation is that when you get the brakes set up with
the tires in there, you will conclude that you can't fit an unmosified flat
wood fender in the remaining brake arch-space and you'll be faced with four
decisions:

A. No fenders
B. Normal metal or plastic fenders
C. Flat wood fenders, filed away at the edges to clear your brakes
D. Flat wood fenders, bisected with double hardware to avoid the brakes

You could get a vintage race bike, but then you are buying a used bike that
may or may not be in your size, or your preferred color, and have wacky
wheel spacing, or take weird sized seat posts, ect.

My Roadeo never rode like a vintage race bike. It wasn't near as
twitchy...that's really the best way I can describe the difference that
I've felt. It's quite a nice riding bike but I felt like it was unlike
other race bikes I've ridden.

I consider the Roadeo a high end road bike frameset, and if you compare it
price wise against other high end road bike framesets it's price, even the
current price, isn't that far off. What's the price of a new Trek Emonda
SLR frameset go for nowadays?

but still, since I purchased my Roadeo frame, which I did wind up selling
because I don't road ride anymore, the price has gone up six hundred bucks.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose vs. Choco-moose

2018-02-09 Thread Clayton.sf
One more thing regarding the control vs. sweep debate (disclaimer: this is
just according to me and I have no "real" 3rd party science to back it up)
- more sweep allows me to keep my elbows closer to my body, and my upper
body, shoulders and arms more relaxed. A lot of people seem equate this
with less control especially when coming from flat and riser bars. At least
that is usually their first response when they ride my bike on singletrack.
For me this allows me to ride a rigid bike more comfortably on MTB terrain
since my arms can now more easily absorb shocks. The bars may come back a
bit more which changes weight distribution when sitting but when things get
dicey I don't sit anyway and have no issue moving my body forward to weight
the wheel. The bullmoose are better in regards to sweep than most normal
mtb bars. I use Jones bars on my MTB with 45 degree sweep. Have also used
flat bars too. Both work but the swept bar allows me to ride longer and
more easily over rough stuff on a rigid bike. I change step length too.
50mm on flat bars, 80mm on Jones.

Hope this helps.

[RBW] Fender width on a Roadini

not sure what I should order. Thought I'd ask here first knowing I can

Re: [RBW] Have a Sub 20lb Roadeo?

2018-02-09 Thread Patrick Moore
First, it's not a problem, is it? Just a choice, except to the extent that
a choice is a problem.

Next, you'll have to define and defend "outclassed.

As to reasons to choose a Rivendell, they have an almost if not absolutely
unique kind of fit and handling (I've owned 5), so that's one reason, if
you like this fit and handling, and many do. The second is the quality; the
builds are unsurpassed, or so I hear; I am not a builder and have to take
this on faith. Others can comment on both reasons, I think.

If I were in the market for a top of the line road bike requiring no
special features, I'd buy a Roadeo rather than one from a less known
company or builder.

I think the real problem here is the Roadeo is simply outclassed in it's price
bracket. You could easily get a custom geo steel road bike with a carbon fork
fork less. If the plan is a lightweight steel build I'd say there are way
better choices for your money.

My Hunqapillar is named Shadowfax, after Gandalf’s horse in Lord of the Rings.
I gave the books singular description to the painter and gave him creative
license to make it happen. Frame’s still with Mark. “By day his coat glistens
like silver; and by night it is like a shade, and he passes unseen.” The
description lends itself to some form of “liquid” multi layer, shifting scheme.

Google ate my attempted response, so here goes again. Sorry if this double
posts later.

Bruce said: “If there's no room to be passed, I signal that and take the lane.
Once there is room I move over and wave them around. It works for me.”

Sweet! I attempt much the same thing, but with mixed results. Could you help me
understand what “not safe to pass” signal you use? I find that 2/3rds of
drivers either ignore it or are ignorant of the meaning it. One driver told me
“I don’t speak bike.” I wanted to ask if he spoke common sense, but common
sense prevented me from asking. Shrug. Grin. I use the “slow” signal: left arm
straight out, forearm bent down 90˚, palm open, facing backwards. Sometimes
I’ll swing my palm back and forth to try and get their attention if they are
not slowing down and it’s not clear.

I never cease to be amazed by how often drivers pass when they can’t see if it
is clear ahead. Also, I never signal for cars to pass me. Too much “but he said
it was OK!” excuse for failure to be smart. Instead, I just smile and wave.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Alone in a Sea of Autos

2018-02-09 Thread Bruce K Jamison

I'm alone on every commute. Maybe I'll see another bike on the trail part
of my commute, but on the road parts it's just me and all the cars and
trucks. I'm OK with that. I like riding much more than I do driving. My
car is 10 years old and at this rate will last another 10.

I get the occasional aggression, but the more I take charge of situations
the better things are. Cars want to be told what to do when they see you.
Hand signals - especially the "come around me wave" - are respected. I
always ride with a mirror and I try to be aware of what others may be
wanting. If there's no room to be passed, I signal that and take the
lane. Once there is room I move over and wave them around. It works for
me.

Yea to the idea of paint with "depth" and "dimension" or texture to it ,
anything but "flat" ! Whether it be metallic, pearl, translucent, liquid-like
etc I don't know all the terms but you get the idea. I rather like paints
that appear different in different shades of light , the "shape-shifting" ones
like metallic for example.

Come to think of it .. yeah . . a red for a go-fast bike for you ... it just
kinda fits. It doesn't have to "scream" red but red like a "terminator".

 It just keepsgoing :)

Update for me as well. Called Riv and confirmed that it would not be uncommon

added a link or two and connected it all with two quick links. Guys at Riv said
they have done the same on their own bikes without issue.

I consider the layer of dust on my car to be a badge of honor. I probably
to 2K or less per year. It's only on the weekends if I have a long errand
to run with time constraints that I use it. Otherwise, its the bike.

I take Caltrain to work from San Mateo to the city. I ride my Brompton to
and from the train station. On the way home I always smirk as I happily
breeze by all the cars backed up trying to get on 92 to get to the San
Mateo Bridge...

Life is good.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose vs. Choco-moose

2018-02-09 Thread William R.
The Chocomooses that came stock on my Appaloosa are bees knees perfect as
far as I'm concerned. But I definitely don't ride much single track on
mine. Dirt and that other stuff roads plenty. Rough, badly maintained MUPs,
yes. The thing that is so great about this set up is how stable it all is.
But for single track you will want more fast response maneuverability. I
would say maybe standard Bullmooses may be the way for you to go. But then
you need to consider that the Appa is designed for bars that sweep back
with a longer top tube. Maybe a non-moose bar with the right length stem
will enable you to dial in the reach better. I agree with Jeremy and others
that are using Jones bars on their Appaloosa's. That might be an avenue for
you to explore.

Well, one of the things about the Clem L is you don't need to concern
yourself with standover. Also the seat post and seat tube are super beefy,
so if you don't mind a bit of post, the 52 will absolutely work in terms of
reach to bars with a Bosco setup. I think if there is any real concern the
bike could be too big, you can safely go with the 52 (if they have 'em in
stock.)
