I’m guessing they jacked up the seat and bar just to show people how high they
will go on this size model.

14 garage door slats seat height is pretty tall though!!!

92cm SH?

Remindsme of a Superhilsen I saw on another forum that was like a 72cm frame

Quick summary to answer your question about the difference between the Sam
and the Atlantis: I have both. They are splendid rides. The ‘53 Atlantis
with 26 inch wheels feels more “planted” than Sam. Turns in quickly and
easily (26” wheel effect?). Super stable carrying a 20+ pound load. I love
 it.

The 650b ‘51 Sam with more slack angles is just as enjoyable but the ride
feels just a bit more luxurious. Perhaps the wheel size and angles
contribute to the effect. The front end wants to move a little more than
the Atlantis but it’s okay. Nothing squirrely about it. Could easily be my
road bike. For me, more so than the Atlantis.

Both are set up for carrying loads (racks and baskets). Sam has drop bars
and Atlantis uses Albatross. It would be incredibly difficult to pick one
 over the other.

Hope this is helpful. I’ll send pics in another post.

 Best,
 Richard

Nice! Thanks. I do wonder how you (all) keep your bikes so clean,
particularly the Atlantis. Was this photo taken just after a new build? Or
perhaps it's just that photos don't show dirt?

The new Ford Blue (it's a Rivendell custom road, just modifed by C
Matthews) is clean because I actually cleaned each bit and part as I
re-assembled it. But it will be at least a decade before it's as clean
again; tho' I do wash my bikes at least a few times a year, in addition to
regular drivetrain and moving part maintenance. The green Riv is not nearly
as clean as the blue at this point.

Great looking bike!

Because I really like the Acorn bag folks, and to keep me from buying

bag available. I am amazed it still shows available but there it is.

Do you remember the size of the Berthoud decaleur you are using with the
Acorn? No worries if not but if you do know, it would help.

Re: [RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Nice. I draw this lesson from this great variety of Sams: If at first you
don't like a Rivendell model, wait a few years. I think that I'd probably
have kept a 55 X 57 single tt Sam that cleared 50 mm tires.

But, Rivendell: *Don't *change the Roadeo until I categorically rule it
out. It's neck-to-neck with the "old high end stage racer" option in the
"let's get a new bike for multiple gears and freewheel" sweepstakes.

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-29 Thread tc
I use my 2017 58 Sam for paved greenways and roads. It's a standard
'complete' build, except I swapped out the std Noodles for 46s, added black
cork tape, plus a kickstand. Later added an Acorn roll bag, and Acorn's
Tall Rando bag (had to wait FOREVER for them to do a black canvas run!).
Berthoud decaleur, and a Nitto M18 (?) front rack . The Snoqualmie Pass
tires are like butter. I don't much like the look of the Topeak Road Morph
mini pump, but it's one of the nicer pumps I've operated. Bottle cage is a
Velo Orange Retro.

I need to mount another bottle cage before the heat sets in, so will
probably stuff the pump somewhere else.

[RBW] Re: Many nice Sam Hillbornes lately

2018-03-29 Thread RichS
Patrick,

Quick summary to answer your question about the difference between the Sam and
the Atlantis: I have both. They are splendid rides. The ‘53 Atlantis with 26
inch wheels feels more “planted” than Sam. Turns in quickly and easily (26”
wheel effect?). Super stable carrying a 20+ pound load. I love it.

The 650b ‘51 Sam with more slack angles is just as enjoyable but the ride feels
just a bit more luxurious. Perhaps the wheel size and angles contribute to the
effect. The front end wants to move a little more than the Atlantis but it’s
okay. Nothing squirrely about it. Could easily be my road bike. For me, more so
than the Atlantis.

Both are set up for carrying loads (racks and baskets). Sam has drop bars and
Atlantis uses Albatross. It would be incredibly difficult to pick one over the
other.

Hope this is helpful. I’ll send pics in another post.

Best,
Richard

What would not be cool is a Riv employee anonymously posting. That would be
sorta like calling in to a conference call without letting anyone know -
basically snooping. That can get you placed on notice where I work. Not saying
anyone at Riv does this, and would certainly not expect it from anyone there!
Just saying it’s great that they participate “out in the open”.

[RBW] Re: Grant and RBW staff's involvement in this group

2018-03-29 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I always think it's a great thing when GP or one of the gang responds in a
thread. It adds a wonderful aspect to our discussions.

But I do want to be exceptionally clear on this point - it is _NOT_ a
direct line to RBW, Rivendell Bikes, Rivbike.com or anything to do with the
denizens of Walnut Creek.

Way back in the beginning of this virtual group ride, when dial-up was
a thing and gmail wasn't, there was some confusion about the nature of the
Rivendell discussion group, and some people got upset that the RBW Staff
could not immediately respond to questions about orders or items or issues.
I offered to take over management of the group and clearly separate it from
any method of direct communications with RBW.

Customer service questions, or order questions or anything that needs an
official answer should be directed to Rivendell Bicycle Works.

[RBW] Grant and RBW staff's involvement in this group

I've been perusing this group for about a year now, and can I just say that
it's really cool and special to have Grant et al so involved here? I was

Of course you can always call the shop and chat with RBW staff one-on-one,

calling the shots, and seeing their involvement provides a unique level of
connection that I think is hard to find elsewhere.

Overall, pretty cool.

[RBW] Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-29 Thread tc
I think for me, I’d need only 2 wheel sets. One running something like
Snoqualmies, and another with 2” knobbies. I could actually get identical size
rims to minimize brake adjustments.

Chain, cassettes, pretty much everything else *could* be the same, though I
tend to like drops for road and mtb bars for dirt. But I don’t ride dirt as
often as I’d like anymore. My Clem was an attempt at forcing me to ride
off-road.

Still pondering.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I tried that 25-30 years ago, only with a various moderately high end
mountain bike frameset )the last of 3 was a '91 Stumpjumper Team), years
ago, and found that I preferred different bikes for different purposes. I
had wheels for 2" knobbies, wheels for 35 mm Fatboys or City Slickers, and
a wheelset for very light 22-23 mm Turbos. Each wheel had different
cassettes. I used the same rims for all wheels, so I did not have to adjust
brakes.

I found that I missed the feel of a more "roady" bike, and discovered that
the cockpit setup was too much of a compromise, and ended the experiment
when I bought a '92 XO-1, which I built up as a gofast with the Turbos; I
then kept the steel mtb frame with 35 mm wheels as a drop bar commuter, and
got myself another mountain bike for off road riding.

Years later I did have a 60 mm wheelset for my Fargo along with a 32
(actual; Kojaks) mm one, but again discovered that, when I ride 32s I
prefer a lighter frame and a slightly more agressive position.

OTOH, 3 wheels each with its own gearing worked better than trying to get
both road and dirt gearing on the same wheelset with a Mountain Tamer Quad
and a 16 t granny "ring".

Turning the question around a bit: if you use the same bike for different
conditions, do you prefer a more dirt oriented bike for road riding, or a
more road oriented bike for dirt riding? I assume that most on this list
choose the former --witness the road-ified Sams; but I rather enjoy riding
~30 mm Elk Passes on our local dirt (when moisture has packed the sand down
a bit) and, if I had to choose 1 or t'other, I think I'd prefer a road bike
on dirt to a mountain bike on road, or for that matter, a compromise. But:
a neat bike would be a 559 road bike like my Rivs that would take both the
Elk Passes and the Rat Trap Passes; for that, I'd build 2 wheelsets for 1
bike. Oh, it would have to have either cantis or disc brakes ... (would
want to use Dura Ace 7410 levers). And in fact, that option is on my short
list for a 5th, multi-geared road, bike.

When you switch wheels i am guessing you run the same chain on the different
cassetes on the different wheels. Is that ok for the chain since the cassette
wear pattern differs from wheel to wheel?

2018-03-29 Thread Bob Lovejoy
+1 - what Bill said...

I love the idea, I love the possibilities! But those wheels, sitting there
in the corner or hung on hooks, they can call out to you... I heard someone
state that almost any cool bike part can have that effect but wheels, in my
experience, are the worst... or the best certainly to be treated with
great respect, logic and discipline. Kind of reminds me of that "you can
have any two out of the three". Indeed!

[RBW] Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-29 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Tom,

This is something I have not yet accomplished but have been considering a lot
lately. I have too many bike projects taking up space and cluttering my mind.
I do enjoy tinkering and have had reservations about doing a big purge only to
later regret getting rid of certain parts so I’m trying to come up with some
well planned solutions to minimize to a couple frames and keep some
interchangeable components and wheels around to do bar/wheel/drivetrain swaps.
I still have a lot of planning and reorganizing to do but also fear what Bill
has suggested about having those spare wheels around and being the gateway to
n+1.

My ideal scenario in theory however is to keep two frames that take the same
size wheels and a few different wheelsets to swap around at leisure and always
keep the two bikes built differently (such as hauler vs go fast or drop vs
upright, for example.)

[RBW] Who swaps out wheel sets to keep from buying new bikes?

2018-03-29 Thread Palmer
Hello Tom,
I am a confessed wheel junkie. I do swap wheels often and have 5 sets for my 2
disc brake bikes and many for both 700c, 650b, and 26” Rivish bikes. Light
wheels have the thinnest tires and wide have fatter tires. Like Bill, this also
means buying a frame is easy because I already have wheels and other parts
ready to build. Some of my best days are when I have a few hours to swap wheels
and ride 5 different bikes with different setups. I do enjoy wrenching a lot
though. Once I have a frame/wheel/tire combo dialed in, I swap bars or the
season changes and I can start over. Have too many bikes means I almost always
have some to ride and wrench to keep me happy.

When I converted my Sam to single speed, I left the rear derailler and rear

That must have been 3 years ago and I haven't switched once.

Anyone want a decent used wheelset cheap?
