Re: [RBW] Ram in the Dirt

2018-05-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm curious about the max tire size for a blue Ram. I did use the so-called
35 mm Kojaks on mine for a while, though I think they measured more like 32
on the Open Pros, but they did leave ample room for fenders.

Can you squeeze in anything bigger than a true 35?

Didn't you just sell a pair of new, Bon Jon Pass 35s?

And finally: photo of the fat-tired Ram? (Apology if you have already
posted one and I missed it.)

[RBW] Re: Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-16 Thread Lum Gim Fong
My thoughts are:

1. Might miss out on a big score though, if people can’t drop in to sell their
Bomba or whatever. I scored my blue Ram in 2016 from a drop-in person who
turned out to be local to me and probably the most pleasant person I’ve ever
done an online transaction with.

2. Might miss out on a big sell if people can’t drop in for WTB: 53 Bleriot or
whatever. That is how I got here. Looking to buy my first RBW. Referred by a
possible non-rivster from BikeForums. Been here for ~6 years now. Abandoned
BikeForums cuz just so pleasant here.

3. Plenty of vets here have benefitted greatly by selling and buying (and
frequently) here.

4. I think this place is more in danger of fizzling out by not having for sale
threads. Nonsale conversations seem to be held by a limited number of people
here. New long time contributors might wind up being added to the group from
initial buying and selling threads, as in my case.

On the other hand that statement might make you do away with buying and selling
threads all together in a hurry!! ha ha Ha

I think separate groups would end up with all of them having very little
traffic. I like all the FS/WTB/trade posts, it just bugs me when we get spammed
by people who've never contributed to a conversation. Which doesn't really
happen all that often.

[RBW] Ram in the Dirt

2018-05-16 Thread Matt
In 2003 the only bike I owned was a mid-70s 3-speed Raleigh Sport that I
rode to work every day and locked up on the street. Somehow I got my hands
on a Reader, Grant's philosophy resonated with me and next thing I knew I
had a blue Ram. I didn't know the first thing about tire sizes and riding
styles but I knew the Ram was comfortable and it could take fenders and I
was only ever going to ride on pavement on the east coast, so I put 28s on
it and never looked back. Many, many years later and now I'm on the west
coast and I know a lot more about bikes and I also know about fire roads.
So I finally hung the fenders up and maxed out the tires and wouldn't you
know it, but Los Angeles has miles and miles of dirt roads (doesn't hurt
that LA covers a massive area). Took a ride a few weeks back that looks
downright country but happened to be in the second largest city in the US.

I still have that Raleigh, btw, and it's still perfect for leaving outside.

[RBW] Re: Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-16 Thread dougP
Jim:

This is definitely a topic worthy of thought. The "transactions" tag was
incorporated a while back but it doesn't really call attention to itself.

My thoughts: I agree with the notion of new members needing to build a bit
of cred & invest some time & thought before selling stuff. I'm always a
bit leery of someone who parachutes in with a grab bag of goodies. I can
see how someone with a load of junk could figure "hey here's a bunch of
people I don't know where I can unload all this crap." Reputable sellers
always list something about the condition ("used but lots of life left";
NIB; etc.).

As to traders & buyers, I'd be a little more lenient. Traders typically
have something very specific they are looking for, as are buyers. I
imagine lots of WTB posts are someone trying to do a build on a budget.

Personally I really enjoy the FS/WTB/WTT posts. As others have mentioned,
it's like window shopping. Many times I've had the experience of picking
up some consumable that I may someday need. Of course, that can be a step
to financial ruin if left unchecked.

I don't think it's gotten out of hand & of course winter brings on parts
anxiety. Hopefully with good weather we'll hear more ride reports (with
photos!) and adventure stories.

[RBW] Re: WTTry: MKS Toe clips and leather straps

2018-05-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, Clayton. I’ve puzzled that through. The Touring (what I’ve been riding
with the Hold Fast straps) is 94W x 63L while the road is 5mm wider and 2mm
shorter. Interestingly, I seem to prefer ball of the foot over the spindle.
Feels more natural to barefoot running that way.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: WTTry: MKS Toe clips and leather straps

2018-05-16 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Deacon, if you have large feet, you might find the shorter platforms of the
road pedals don't allow your foot to go deep enough into the clips,
depending where you prefer the pedal spindle to be under your foot.
Aluminum spacers might be needed. I wear a 10-1/2 and use large mountain
pedals with xtra large toe clips to get deep enough. I prefer the spindle
behind the ball of my foot a bit though...

Have fun. Be safe.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-16 Thread Forrest Harvey
As someone who is new (but has been a non subscribed looker :) ) I
appreciate both the FS and NON FS posts.
What is nice about the FS posts on here vs. places like craigslist/bay, is
that I trust the seller a lot more and the pricers are far more fair. I
would much rather support someone who appreciates bikes vs. someone who
flips something for a high dollar because it says nitto.

I also enjoy reading all of the conversation threads, lots of knowledgeable
people on here and it's great to learn!

[RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-16 Thread Lum Gim Fong
For me it is aestaetics.

I like the uniforn sizing of the clamp area and the cuff of the 25.4/26
bars and dislike the looks of a bulge on 31.8 bars.

But really, it wouldn't matter if someone never pointed those things out to
me. I was perfectly happy riding my 31 bars until I started looking at the
pretty Nitto bars.

If the bars are 31 all around though, that might make them more grip
friendly. Chunkier bars.

[RBW] Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-16 Thread Jonathan D.
I really appreciate the FS posts, whether I buy something or not, but I
definitely support limiting the ability to post FS posts to folks who
contribute to the community. I also enjoy experimenting with variations of the
bikes I have, like new handlebars, stem length, etc. The for sale posts allow me
to experiment.

On the other hand limiting the FS posts would save my wallet since i have
purchased 3 bikes from the list over the last year.

[RBW] FS: NIB Luna Cycle BBS02 mid-drive kit with 48v battery $600

2018-05-16 Thread Dan McNamara
Pardon the non-RBW content but since there has been a fair amount of e-bike
conversion discussion lately I thought I would throw this out there.

I purchased this kit to convert my wife's cargo bike (Bike Friday
Haul-a-Day) but she is not really going to be up for bike riding anytime in
the near future (unfortunately.) So instead of taking on an unneeded
project it is time to move this on.

The kit has never been installed or really out of the box. It is programmed
to 750W but is capable of delivering more power if needed/wanted.

Plenty of info available on the Luna Cycle site:
https://lunacycle.com/bafang-bbs02-750w-middrive-kit/

$600 plus shipping for the complete kit.

PM with any questions. I am in the SF Bay Area and local pickup or delivery
would be great.

[RBW] Re: WTTry: MKS Toe clips and leather straps

2018-05-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Clayton, Thank you for the generious XT offer, but for the sake of the pedals
and our friendship I’d best pass, lest I botch ‘em! My plan is to try the
Sylvan Road as my next pedal. Do I need the spikey grips? They seem to not do
much on the Touring pedals, the ridge bar itself doing the work. Side to side
motion is a near non-issue, but will the smoother Road pedals make it an issue?
I’ll find out. I like the idea of outer support for the foot, absent on the
Touring. Also looking at the BM-7.

Hmmm. I wonder about threading brake cable through standard straps to stiffen
them up? I’ll what issues I encounter when I get the toe clips set up.

[RBW] 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-16 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Drw,
26.0 bars are not likely going anywhere anytime soon. If you have even the
slightest desire to potentially use any newer 31.8 bars, however, then you’d
likely be better off choosing the 31.8 and shimming it for 26.0 so you at least
have that option. Although a bit of a stretch financially I went for a 26.0
zero mm reach version from the first batch after seriously daydreaming of the
exact same kind of design just weeks before they announced the new stem. I
viewed it as getting a custom stem without going to the trouble of ordering a
custom. I also debated the 26.0. vs 31.8 for a bit but ultimately went 26.0
since I already have 26.0 Crust bars to pair with the stem and they were the
whole reason I wanted one in the first place.

post. Probably would not have to be too long to weed out people who find the
list, sign up, and post a FS right away.

[RBW] Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Jim, great questions!

My take is we are an amazing “economy of community” by which I mean we share
the journey of riding and all that entails and that semi-relates to it in a
Rivendelian way. What is “economy of community”? The idea that people give
freely of their abundance and ask for help where there is need. It may be
advice, experience, parts, bikes, etc. Obviously, people have to participate in
the community for that to work, and for others to have a good idea of what
needs and expertice are.

Sellers: If I don’t recognize a seller, I check their “history” to see if they
have participated and I simply don’t remember. Time and our quality of
interaction tends to weed out folks here just to sell.

Ride Reports: I’d love to see more! I love hearing about other’s trips and
(mis)adventures (synonyms in my case!). Personality shines through here and
they are a great way to experience community. Saying that, I sometimes hold off
on posting ride reports because I don’t want to innundate folks, or combine
multiple into one. And they naturally come in waves. I’ve not posted a ride
report in a bit, not because I’ve not ridden, but because I’ve focused on other
things while riding.

Expertice: I have benifited stunningly from the advice on this group. You’ve
all seen my meandoneering journey to fixed gear and my current puzzling on
minimalist-friendly cycling footwear and pedal retention. The combined
expereince of this group has made that journey far more doable than if I were
isolated with only my “Specialized” rep, er, LBS to connect with. My riding is
a niche in a niche in a niche in an alcove in a nook in a recess in a niche.
Where else could I turn to puzzle out shoe stiffening so I can ride toe clips
with fixed gear mountain trail bikepacking? Grin.

Bottom line: Folks whose first post is a sell, moderation makes sense. Invite
them (via cut and paste?) to participate in the economy of community before
they sell. I love the presumption of goodness folks here have, and never ever
want to take advantage of it (and if I have, please, please let me know!) and
never ever want to see it harden to anything less.

Your hidden labors, Jim, are a huge part of what make this group what it is.
You are an amazing gift in this amazing gift of a group!

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-16 Thread Clayton.sf
I think there might be an opportunity to change a negative into a positive
too. On other forums I frequent there is a honor system where users
"donate" a certain amount when an item sells. Can be fixed amount or %.
This tends to weed out less serious sellers and the funds can go towards
maintenance/mods, bbq, or charitable causes. Another option would be to
section off BST to avoid it cluttering up content. Just some thoughts.

2018-05-16 Thread Patrick Moore
*not pass along any moderated FS/WTB posts.* I take it you mean
*non-moderated*?

1. I personally like to read posts aboutt Rivendell-ish items for sale,
even if I don't want to buy.

2. I agree that these should be limited to "regular" contributors, even if
only to preserve the levels of trust we expect from this list.

3. I personally would not let FS/WTB posts go through for those who haven't
been list participators for a while -- I leave it to others to define
"while." This would prevent the hassle of having to moderate each FS/WTB
post.

4. Define "while."

5. Thanks again for moderating this very interesting list.

[RBW] Wednesday Musings: Are We A Swap Meet?

2018-05-16 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
I've had a couple of people mention issues in transactions of late. Folks
flaking on payment. Deciding for unclear reasons not to respond, pay or
explain.

I do think we're better than that.

But, to my mind there's a slightly larger issue - one I won't solve this
week, of course. To start off, I wanted to tee up the topic and see what
others think.

"How much of the buy/sell/trade/wanted stuff do we want in this group?"

I realize it's seasonal - less riding in the winter, spring cleaning,
bike/bit upgrading, that sort of thing. But over the last year or so, it's
outweighed the other topics. (Honestly, in the last couple months, that
seems to be correcting itself, which I think is a good thing. Signal to
Noise ratios are always best corrected by increasing Signal.)

And I'd rather enjoy ride reports, technical help, musings on models,
experience and gear evaluations than wade through a bunch of buyers and
sellers. But, I do understand it's helpful.

One thing I see as Admin which most don't: Folks whose first post is a
FS/WTB and who never return again.
I'm not sure how to fix this other than be more strict on what gets through
and not pass along any moderated FS/WTB posts. That is, since folks
basically get unmoderated by creating posts of Quality, or by reaching out
to me, those people who are moderated and only posting Buy/Sell items are -
by one test - taking advantage of those who donate time and expertise to
this group.

Maybe that's a good first step.

Thoughts?

react/respond).

[RBW] Re: Happy Fantastic Rivendell Perfecto Shopping Experience!

2018-05-16 Thread PG
Agree with above posters...the Riv shopping experience is quite intuitive
and easy to navigate.

As for inventory issues, I think anyone who goes to Rivendell for their
cycling needs understands that there are real world, money flow issues that
a company the size of Riv has to grapple with. If all the bumps were
removed, so would the humanity.

We are happy -- thrilled even -- that they even exist, let alone at such a
professional level!

On my ACA Banff-Whitefish tour, we all charged our phones in the campground
bathroom the first night. When we checked in the morning, ONE phone had
been stolen, the leader's! It was the cheapest flip phone you could get but
he had to go "without" for the entire trip (other than the SAT phone he
carried) If you carry a power bank for charging, you should have no
problems. There'll be opportunities to charge that battery.

Your trip will be tough but extremely rewarding -- enjoy!

[RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-16 Thread Drw
honestly, 65% of this has to do with the fact that it is a removable
faceplate quill stem that looks good. I tend to swap bars, and being able
to keep bars wrapped and fully set up, would be a huge plus. Yes, i know
there are other stems that have a removable faceplate, but they are either
not tall enough, or super ugly. As far as the 30mm extension, i'd like to
try it. i like their copy and agree with Bob K's take that they think this
is one option, not the only.

That being said, the fact that i could buy 3 or 4 dirt drop stems for the
price of one is a little hard to swallow.

Re: [RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-16 Thread Philip Williamson
I thought they made a case for buying a bigger frame to get a longer front
center, and then using their stem to bring the bars back. I don't know how
many people want to stand over a frame with a 3" longer top tube than
"fits" them, though. I'm looking at longer slacker bikes for mountain
biking, and am thinking about running drops with negative-extension stems.
Sounds insane, but since I never ride on the tops, I can't articulate the
problem with that plan.

Re: [RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-16 Thread Bob Keal
Interesting take, Patrick. I agree wholeheartedly that "...stems with
extensions used with drop bars, and bikes built to use them both, have been
around too long to be mere mistakes in design." At the same time, it seems
to me that Analog isn't saying bike design is wrong or that people have
been making mistakes all this time. I do think that they're saying that the
(W)right Stem is another way to find comfort on a bicycle, and that in
their experience it doesn't affect a bike's handling in a negative way.
Therefore, the result is a net positive for folks looking to use drop bars
on bikes that would otherwise be generally swept-back bar or upright riders
based on geometry.

One point I've seen them state somewhere is that modern MTBs use very, very
short stems. Of course, this is based off of fundamental shifts in overall
geometry that are aiming for a certain type of handling, but the point
remains: modern MTB designers aren't (necessarily) saying that NORBA bikes
were *wrong*. Really, current mountain bike designers are saying, "Maybe we
learned something from what we came up with so far, and hey, maybe there's
another way to do this that will work better for x or y reasons." And in my
view Analog is saying something similar through the design and creation of
their stems.

In other words, it seems like Analog is saying here's another option rather
than saying it's the only one.

Re: [RBW] Re: 26.0 vs 31.8

2018-05-16 Thread d2mini
They have some interesting points about steering/handling and toe overlap
with a wheel that was farther out front and slacker angles, but that won't
change just by changing your stem. The bike would have to be designed with
this in mind.
By using their stem you'd get a more upright riding position due to the
shorter reach and you may experience better some better steering, but not
to the extent of their wright brothers mumbo jumbo, and toe overlap would
remain unchanged. But interesting thoughts nonetheless.

I have to agree. I don't discount the Analog idea entirely -- it may well
work for some bikes in some applications for some riders -- but stems with
extensions used with drop bars, and bikes built to use them both, have been
