[RBW] Re: convert A. Homer Hilsen 700c to 650b

2018-08-02 Thread Mark Schneider
Thanks for all the excellent comments, I tried an old Mafac Raid I
remembered I had and while I can get it to contact the rim, it's at an
absurd angle, and no where near enough power for safe operation. I've
converted old Treks to 650b with the 559's, but the Trek started with a
short reach brake, not the 559's the Homer came with The Raid's will allow
more room for fenders and I can try some 700x38 from Compass or Soma,
should be a nice ride.

Hi Portland friends,

I’m visiting Portland with my all-rounder-style bike at least till Monday. If

I am not sure if the Alex cycles Rams are the same as RBW Rambouillets

the same tube specs as the original Rivendells. I guess a call to Alex may
clear it up.
They are not left over Rams from the original Rivendell run.

I have owned a Ram, Rodeo, and Roadini. They are all great bikes and if you can
get over the lack of lugs and the fit is ok, the Roadini gives up nothing to
the other two. With a pbh just under 85, all of Riv’s bikes seem to fit me
perfectly. I’ve actually had people ask me if my Rivs were custom bc the fit it
so good. I suspect someone at Rivendell who designs bikes is very similar in
size to me. If I was buying new (and it is still possible to get a new Ram from
Japan) I would get the Roadini, then the Roadeo, then the Ram.

Cheers!

Re: [RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.

2018-08-02 Thread Jeremy Till
My guesses:

1. It was Grant who convinced Tektro to make the R559 calipers in the first
place, so I think he feels motivated to stick to his guns about the value
of these brakes and continue to spec them on his bikes.
2. Production costs. The fork crowns and seatstay bridges already have
brake mounts, whereas adding cantilever mounts adds four more brazing
operations (at least). Fairly critical ones at that, where a strong braze
and good placement/alignment are essential to the function of the bike.

All that being said, the latest batch of Sams had cantilever posts (and I
was tempted by them!). They're going on pause until 2020, we'll see if
they come back with posts or not then.

2018-08-02 Thread Tim Gavin
I swapped my R559s for Paul Racers because the R559s intruded upon fender
space. Centerpulls do not.

I thought the Pauls had better lever feel, because they are stiffer than
the R559s. Braking performance was only slightly better than R559s, though
(both brakes on Kool-Stop pads).

Indeed, not only do I remember that article, but I have one of the saddles
that they stuffed with foam, an early Selle Anatomica that had stretched to
the end of its adjustment screw. It also has a single zip tie for lacing.
I'll try to post some pictures of it tonight. I bought it at a Riv garage
sale for like $15 just to get a feel for leather saddles, and have kept it
as a neat bit of Riv ephemera.

[RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.

2018-08-02 Thread Tim Bantham
I'll add to the conversation and say that I have too have a caliper Sam. I
love this bike! Given the choice if I had to do it all over again I would
prefer a canti version just because of the added tire clearance. Mine came
with the R559's which are decent brakes but I ended up swapping them out
with the Paul Racer's just like others have said. When adjusted properly
the Paul's are fantastic brakes! If you add the Paul's the one
recommendation I'll make is to get the Paul Moon Units. The Moon Unit is
such a nicely designed brake accessory that makes your life easier when it
comes to adjusting your brakes. You mentioned you wanted to use the bike
with fenders. The Racer's easily clear the fenders where as the Tektro
brakes make just enough contact to mess with your fender alignment.

further adjustment necessary, at least IME.

[RBW] Re: Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.

2018-08-02 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Loved my R559’s with salmon pads on my blue Sam.
I ran 42’s with fenders on it. No problem. I see no reason to pay all that
money for Pauls.

I had Pauls on a Bleriot once and switched to the R559’s and was much happier.
Cleaner look and braked better. No more judder. Easy setup. No fuss. Less
hardware. Braked just as well. I found clearance to be better by 1mm IIRC.

2018-08-02 Thread Matt Beecher
Yes, the Saluki sounds like what you should look for. I liked my first one so
much that I bought a spare.

Of course, the new 56 Atlantis is great too. For the record, my Salukis are
60(or is it 61?) and the 56 Atlantis is just as good of a fit for me.

For slightly shorter riders, there was a 55-56 cm Saluki on EBay last night. It
might still be there.

I have the Tektro/Silver (Riv branded and shinier version) 559s on 3 bikes and
they work fine for me. I use either Kool-Stop or Aztec pads which grip better
than the stock items. I had Paul Racers on a Saluki and did not like them. I
now have my first centerpulls (Mafac) and so far really like them. Also with
Kool-stop pads.

[RBW] Re: Brooks saddle turning into a banana

2018-08-02 Thread Ron Mc
Ian, I have to agree about comfort - the high-mileage laced saddle I show
Is an easy-chair. But I'll end up replacing it this fall after finishing
out the summer sweat.
S. Texas summer sweat is what ages Brooks saddles here. From October to
May we just ride on them, but June to September, they stretch on every
ride.

[RBW] Re: What Size Nord Lock washer for Silver Bar Ends?

2018-08-02 Thread Ron Mc
I had to resort to blue loctite on the threads of a Cyclo shifter into
round Brit braze-on (too large to fit French)

It works, though. Actually, to make it work, had to apply it several
times. Finally there was enough cured loctite residue on the threads to do
the job beeswax does on finer threads.

[RBW] Re: FS Acorn bags

2018-08-02 Thread Steve Butcher
Right-O Bill. I check in on Acorn's upcoming releases frequently and the
olive color has not appeared in awhile, nor does it seem to be in the
queue. Also, seems olive may not as popular from a number of the bag
makers as it used to be. Perhaps one reason is that when one mixes olive
bags from different makers, there are sometimes noticeable differences in
shades compared to black or tan.

Thanks for the encouragement,
Steve
