Still have it. On the third paint job. Owned maybe 20 bikes (all vintage)
in the intervening years but the AR is still here and still doing what it
does best: back roads camptouring.
It's unimprovable.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet vs. Roadeo?

2018-10-04 Thread ascpgh
Wow Rod, I have a Rambouillet and a Disc Trucker, the latter I'm happy with
for its intended use but wouldn't say the ride delights me. I find that
even after 20 miles (unloaded) I am aware of the stiffer tubing of its
build.

Maybe the disc fork makes that much of a difference but the net take away
from my riding is that I'll underbike the heck out of my Ram before I'll
overbike the Trucker. which is only ridden other than commuting because of
its generator lights and always mounted Nelson Longflap. I'm in process of
fixing those oversights.

[RBW] Re: OT: Kids' bikes. Islabikes is closing.

2018-10-04 Thread ctifusion
That's a great retro build. I have an old mtb waiting for when my 8 year old
grows a bit more. Couldn't pass up a super high end 1994 diamondback when I saw
it on craigslist for $60 (even has some XTR bits!).

I will recommend looking at the Salsa kids mtbs. Rigid, 1x8, 20 and 24 inch
wheels sizes that both take 3 inch tires. I think Giant also makes a plus-tire
kids bike. The Salsa is a really incredible bike with extremely stable
geometry. He loves how it floats on grass like a fat bike would but is still
very fast on the street.

I'll post a link from my computer in a bit.

[RBW] Re: With respect to the Blahg post and the lack of influence....flat pedal resurgence

2018-10-04 Thread Paul Clifton
I was thinking about posting something similar to this. From my point of
view, Rivendell has made a pretty major impact on cycling, and the bike
industry. I mean, who's to say where trends actually start, but Riv and
Grant have fairly consistently been at the front end of some of them - wide
tires for chill comfy bikes, bikes that go wherever but not everywhere,
promoting a just ride attitude, and maybe even long bikes, but that's yet
to be seen.

The statement in the Blahg sounds like an echo of Bruce Gordon a bit. And
it's really hard not to measure influence in dollars. If Riv is so
influential, why don't that have a ton of money all the time? Niche is
defined by market cap, not by aesthetics, admiration, quality, or whatever.

Riv isn't niche because the bikes don't appeal to people (although some
people find them unappealing). Most people I know who don't care about
racing or doing stunts love Rivs. But they're not gonna spend $1500 to $3k
on a bike. They want a bike that costs $500 or less. They buy a Linus or
similar. And surprise, they don't fall in love with biking, and yeah, the
bike probably has something to do with that.

But does anyone consider Linus niche? Linus caters to everyone who just
wants a bike to ride around town. That's such a big niche that it's not a
niche anymore (maybe)(it's more niche than people who want a car to drive
around town).

So Riv's niche is people who (1) Love Bikes and know the value of a good
bike, (2) Have some extra money and choose to spend it on bikes, (3) don't
care about racing and doing stunts. That's a much smaller niche, but the
bikes are so goood.

I know when money is tight, it's really hard to measure success in terms of
anything else. But I hope that the tough times end for a while and Grant,
and everyone at Riv, can remember how much positive impact they've had on
the bike world over the last 25 years. Go Riv!

[RBW] Re: With respect to the Blahg post and the lack of influence....flat pedal resurgence

2018-10-04 Thread iamkeith
With respect to Rivendell's influence:

Yea, Grant was being extremely modest. I personally don't think any other
company - with the possible exception of Surly and Jones - has had as much
impact on design trends or useful and innovations over the last couple of
decades. In addition to your list, don't forget: road bikes that are
comfortable and actually fit, bike packing as a "thing," racks/bags/baskets
becoming commonplace for day-to-day use, 650b wheels, the fact that steel
didn't go away completely. I know there's an endless list of other, quiet
contributors too like Brant Richards, Jan Heine, Kirk Pacenti - and I don't
mean to discount them - but the marketplace would look a lot different if
it wasn't for their contributions.

With respect to the flat pedals article:

Wow - that has to be a case of journalists really having to search hard for
something to write about and pass off as news. (Either that, or they're
the worst trend-spotters ever. This has been going on not only in this
group, but in he mountain biking community as a whole for what - 8 or 9
years at least? I can't recall the last time I saw someone on one of my
local trails with SPDs, save for some rare, lycra-clad XC guy.) I see
what Grant (and others) mean about Interbike being a dying venue.

That would be disappointing, the whole point of the Rodeo is to be a faster
model in the line-up. Oversized tubing is already stiffer, you don't need a
beefier/thicker model, you already have that in AHH. I have a Homer it's
great, but it's designed for a different kind of riding than a Rodeo. I'd
like at least one true performance Riv in the line-up.

I recall what was by present standards a cycling desert 20-25 years ago,
with mtbs dominant and, for the road, mostly ti and soda-can-tubed aluminum
racers for sale, unless you went to a specialist shop that imported
Woodrups or Bob Jacksons. And forget about finding saddlebags or wider road
tires or long-reach brakes.

I think that it was Grant who did the most to change all that, and that he
had a cultural (bike culture) effect that was both far earlier and far more
widespread than Surly or Jones. I'd even say that it was largely Grant who
made it possible for Surly, at least to flourish, and probably (Jones is
much later) Jones too, at least indirectly, that is, by the overall
liberation of design trends.

I think Grant even influenced Jan -- Jan had a custom Riv Road early on, --
though their tastes soon diverged.

I recall how, in the '90s, Rivendell was one of the very few US vendors
selling Brooks saddles, long-reach brakes, and Carradice saddlebags, and I
believe it was Grant who made these if not mainstream, at least visible in
the US market. He had special Brooks saddles made, designed and produced
new bars and bags, ordered new lots of 57mm-reach calipers, and so forth.

But again, his influence may have been widest not so much with his
particular design philosophy or products, at least as all this has
developed over the last decade, but more because, in general, he was the
first even relatively well known cycling vendor -- well known, doubtless,
because of his Bridgestone USA roots -- to simply buck the trend toward
faster lighter more complicated more specialized, and because this
encouraged others -- Surly, for example -- to also start doing their own
thing.

(So, thank you, Grant.)

I wholeheartedly agree. Grant, don't stouten up the Roadeo; do that to the

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Future?

2018-10-04 Thread Kieran J
That would be a real shame if the Roadeo was stretched and stoutened.
There's a strange and increasing homogeneity happening with Rivbikes that
has gobbled up nearly all of their models. I don't really understand the
point of having half a dozen products that are more or less identical.

For me it started with the double-TTs on already plenty stout bikes. As a
tall and lightweight rider, I've essentially lost interest in their
products :-(

Regardless of anything else it’s this homogeneity - or the perception of it -
that typifies the most recent MIT offerings. I wonder how much differently a
modern MIT Sam/Homer (merged in the MIT transition) rides than a modern MIT
Atlantis/Hunq (merged in the MIT Transition)?

Then again - Riv knows how many Roadeos they sold and I’m guessing it ain’t
many. Since I’m not in the market for anything but a Clem L or Bebe I’m not a
potential sale they’re losing.

I don't disagree at all. Developments, advancements and trends obviously
piggyback on previous developments, advancements and trends. Without a
doubt, Grant's thinking about geometry and fit found their way into Jeff
Jones' thinking. Maybe Jeff was simply the conduit for taking things like
lower bottom bracket, athletic, upright riding positions, and ergonomic
handlebars from the road world into the mountain bike world - but it was
Jeff's unique take on it, with slightly different ideas about things like
slacker headtube angles, low trail and ultra-short chainstay lengths, that
eventually created a new paradigm that killed the NORBA mindset. And that
virtually everybody else followed. Others like Canfield & Chromag
continue to take it from there and come up with different variations, but
incrementally so.

For Surly, I'm pretty much referring to fat and plus size tires, along with
a lot of simple, useful components that weren't available elsewhere.
Before they pushed for it, the technology to make big casings didn't even
exist. For me personally, there's never an advancement that more improved
my riding experience. (I'd say multiple-geared drivetrains were more
significant, but I wasn't around when that happened.)

'bikepacking'." I agree with that, at least to some degree.

Related to that blug, I just noticed that the red MicroShift, 9 speed
SL-T09 is installed inside the handlebar.
I would like to use this shifter but I thought it could not be used inside
the handlebar.

Peter,

Once again, thanks so much for the pointer to this bike at BnB!

Today I swapped the GR-9s and Power Grips for a set of MKS Allways platform
pedals (with Knee Savers; I'm afraid that for anatomical reasons, low-Q is
wasted on me), and went for another test ride, which was wonderful.

I also discovered that the Schwalbe tires that I thought were 28mm are
actually 32mm; I'm thinking I'll just swap in some Stampede Pass ELs and
not pursue putting on any larger tires or fenders (with brakes to match)
for the remainder of the season, and just ride the bejesus out of this bike
before the snow, ice, and road salt arrive..

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-10-04 Thread Joe Bernard
I had them on a Clem, they work great in friction. You can even use the left in
index mode if you swap the cables. It might feel weird to your brain, but
there's really no reason for the rear shifting to be on the right side. The
derailers don't care where the shifter is! 😬
