BUMP,

… NOW, asking $350 for frame / fork / rack.

If you aren't into the Bruce Gordon "High Mount Front" / mountain
touring rack (see bottom of page:
http://www.bgcycles.com/new-page-14/) -- I am happy to substitute a
conventional BG front low rider. Or, just the frame/fork and no rack
for $225.

While it wasn't a specific goal, so far I've managed to avoid public

enough to that. For 2019, same commute, more pleasure.

All these stories/goals/non-goals are great to hear! Everyone living their
own, different lives and trying to cycle as much as possible. I'm 35, just
brought our second child into the world, and work full time.

This year my unspoken goal has been to ride whenever possible, likely
inspired by Just Ride. So this year, different than any in the past, I've
ridden to work when possible, grocery store, or even to pick up dinner for
the family. I've spent more days on the bike than any year in the past and
I'm very happy with that. Also purchased my first Riv (Roadini) this year

Re: [RBW] Re: 3 Days of Riding in the Northern Sierras - Ride report

2018-11-28 Thread Collin A
Patrick, that's just where the panniers fit on the rack. The combination of
the small bags and the long wheelbase really send them back there. Bigger
panniers, the likes of Arkel or ortleib, would probably look a little more
normal.

Marc, I'm bummed I didn't come across Chuck's maps during my research. They
look exquisite, and if I head up there again I'll probably give him a call
and pick his brain on nice routes.

Thanks Tony! The clem is indeed ready for more. I've removed the rack and
basket on the front end of the bike since the trip, it got a little
frustrating when I overloaded it and I wanted to try something different.
I've since thrown on a wizard sleeve/fabio's chest as an alternative but
haven't had a chance to really try it out. It has a decreased capacity
compared to the basket, so I think I'll throw another dry bag on top of the
rear rack to make up for it. I've thought about going for a full frame bag
too, but haven't pulled the trigger on that yet.

[RBW] Re: New Wavie Bar Photos

2018-11-28 Thread tc
I lean in the opposite direction, preferring less of a straight back
return. Such bars force the elbows inward, and, to me, steering feels more
like pushing rather than something that coordinates with the lean into a
turn. Of course neither is right nor wrong, just diff strokes. I also
think the avg speed one is going, along with the amount of leverage
required for the riding conditions, determines largely what most folks are
comfortable with.

As a 'shallow' return bar, for folks with medium to wide shoulders, the A+M
and the Jones bars are a dream come true. I'm hoping the Wavie, which
looks to be a slightly wider A+M with a longer straight section on either
side of the stem, will be even better!

[RBW] Re: New Wavie Bar Photos

2018-11-28 Thread 'jeffrey kane' via RBW Owners Bunch
I like the "idea" of this bar and have been toying with pulling the trigger
on a MAP/Ahearne. I did just set up a Billie to replace a Choco Norm on my
daily ride ... but again, I keep thinking about those MAP's. I've tried
other bars with that shape but haven't been pleased as they're usually too
shallow in the return. I do like the return (or sweep) angles of Alba's,
Choco's and the new Billie even though I find myself riding towards the
front of those bars the majority of the time (it's really the super slow
times and weird tight NYC traffic traversing where the upright full sweep
does come in handy for me).

So that said, using the incredibly helpful whatbars.com I've come to think
that the new Velo Orange Curvy One bar looks possibly like an even a better
fit for me than the MAP. And since RIV is working closely with whatbars.com
now I suspect that they'll forward a drawing of the Wavie to them soon
enough to make a comparison.

My main hesitation with the V/O bar is that 31.8 clamp! I mean, really ...
well, that and the fact that all of these bars at 610 to 660 are getting
pretty darn wide for a city boy -- and I used to think Alba's were wide for
gawds sake.

For adventuring in the North end of NorCal it's worth tracking down Chuck
"Bodfish" Elliot's books. He runs a small shop in Quincy worth visiting,
and some of the maps from his books are available on his
website: http://www.bodfishbicycles.com/#projects.

I used to live up in that direction and there's a lot of amazing roads to
ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: Introduction and my new MUSA Atlantis

2018-11-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Erik: I happily shift 10 with bar end shifters and, not only that, but I
use a home-made cassette (14-27) with the ramps misaligned, and shift with
1970s-era Suntour Barcons pulling a 8-speed era Dura Ace 74nn rear
derailleur -- these both move 'faster' per unit of input, so that the
require a finer touch than say, Silver BES and a modern derailleur; I can
shift across all 10 cogs within slightly less than a 90* arc of movement at
the right shifter. In contrast, the BES 9 speed setup on an earlier bike,
with Silvers and lovely, absolutely lovely Microshift road rd required far
more movement, but when shifting it was easier to place the chain
precisely. But the Silvers moved through what, 140 degrees to traverse the
cassette. I blew up that rd when a stick got caught in the rear spokes.
FWIW, 15 years ago, I also shifted 10 with Simplex Retrofriction dt
shifters; very nice, but the cassettes were stock (Am Cl 11-23 and 12-27)
and the shifters had to move through almost 180* to cover the whole
cassette.

I've had to polish my technique; it's a combination of firm, manly movement
at the shifter -- no hesitation -- with a fine or delicate feel for chain
position. It takes more finesse than 8 speed friction, but not so much that
I find it annoying. I do enjoy the skill required.

Some time ago, on this or the Bob list, there was a thread of some off road
rider who shifts 12 in friction with BES.

[RBW] Re: Tire recommendations- 650b/50mm+

2018-11-28 Thread masmojo
My Go-to tire is the WTB Horizons, but they are almost totally smooth; the
Byways are similar, but have a little more tread. Still these are only about 2"
wide. I recently mounted the Simworks Homage tires on my VO Polvalent even
though I was somewhat Leary of their tread, they are really great, but a little
less than 2".
If you want bigger than that I would suggest Continental Race Kings; they are a
mountain bike tire, but they have small, compact, closely spaced knobs. I have
the 29" versions on my Ogre, they are relatively light, the casing is
surprisingly supple & they roll just as well on the street as they do in dirt!

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-28 Thread John Rinker
Fine question Bill. My goal was to ride the Great Divide MBR and to take my
sweet time doing it. My friend and I spent 64 days meandering along,
swimming in every lake, pond, river and creek we could find. We brought our
Tenkara rods and fished some of the finest trout waters in N.America. We
cooked delicious meals from an adequately stocked larder, and we sought out
every brewery along the way to sample the finest IPAs the American West has
to offer (basically, it was a 3000 mile pub crawl!). The weather was
stellar, the riding sublime, and the number of wonderful, generous people
that we met along the way only re-confirms what I already know: get people
outside, away from TV/media and the agitation it's designed to perpetrate,
and we are kind and curious. I saw this many years ago when I hitchhiked
around the country, and I saw it again by bicycle this past summer. People
are good. Put 'em on a bicycle and they are good and happy.

Cheers, John

ps. Never really counted kilometers, but I'd estimate I ride somewhere
between 10 and 10,000 per year. When I reach the age of 70, I think I might
start counting.

Re: [RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-11-28 Thread Steve Palincsar
10,000 only became a goal when it seemed within reach -- and,
unfortunately, thanks to an injury and recovery from surgery, I only
just failed to make it.  This year, thanks to historic levels of rain,
10,000 is far out of reach.  Right now, 9,000 is -- only barely --
within reach, but would require a daily average of just over 15 miles to
achieve.  Given the weather we've experienced all year, it'll take a run
of really good luck to accumulate those remaining 467 miles.  But who
knows.

The real goal is to ride as much as I can, as close to every day as
possible, and enjoy it.  That's good for you in every way possible.

Kudos to Steve. I know of only 1 other person who regularly set 10K as

down to So Broadway at 3 am, get his truck, pick up his load, make his
deliveries, return to ABQ late morning, and often ride a century. But
he was far younger then than Steve.

Me, I had a bad year, not meeting even my own very modest goal (3 K)
for various reasons, but I have to say that I have enjoyed my miles
very much .

Not /my/ skills; that was, I believe, a photo of JP Weigle's CdM bike I
posted.  It's packaged in the Alps style of Rinko, packaging for
transport on trains in Japan, which has been documented in detail in the
pages of Bicycle Quarterly.  A few special parts (slotted cable stops,
for example) are required, mainly in aid of removing the fork, but the
basic idea of disassembly and packing so as to not damage the bike can
be applied to any bike and will rather dramatically reduce the space
required for transport.

If you don't remove the fork, no tools are required other than those
needed to remove the pedals (a pedal wrench or appropriately sized Allen
key) and, if so equipped, to remove the fender.  The CdM bike has a
split fender to facilitate removal, but the Grand Bois EZRinko style of
packing (that doesn't remove the fork) relies on removing both fenders
entirely.  I'm guessing if it's a Riv most likely it's equipped with
plastic fenders, which can easily be removed with nothing more than 5
and 6 mm Allen keys.
