2018-12-03 Thread Philip Williamson
Awesome. “Like a bottle around a campfire.”
We need a word for the bikes that have a strong BOB-ish provenance. That was a
fantastic bike, moved along when I got the Frances, which has the best tall
headtube ever. “Campfire Bottles”

Agreed that Reid was a fantastic trading partner, as was Eric on the Singular
originally. If I knew you could get 27.2 dropper posts back then, I might have
kept it. I’m having a similar bike built with cantilever brakes and top-run
cables.

Re: [RBW] Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-03 Thread Robert F. Harrison
So...2018 was not a great cycling year mileage-wise (down from 2017 which
wasn't high either). The thing is, I've been involved in a volunteer
position that's kept me either busy or traveling about every other weekend.
With that, I haven't been able to keep up my long weekend rides (usually at
least a 30-50 mile ride on one of the two days). And, of course, as I fell
out of cycling shape...sigh.

So my goal was to do an easy week-long tour somewhere I'd never been. As
one of my trips took me from Honolulu to New York, it became pretty
inexpensive (relatively speaking) to get to Europe. I was able to do a
week-long tour of northern Portugal!!! It was wonderful.

The rest of the year it's just been short commuting rides with maybe one
longer ride a month.

2019 promises to be different. My two year term of service has ended and I
can get back to my regular biking 'schedule.' And, to make it a bit more
goal oriented, I'm hoping to continue I ride I started a few years back. My
mainland cycling partner and I rode the Oregon coast a couple of years back
and we're hoping to continue on from the Oregon border to Bay Area (which
means a Riv visit as a treat for completing it). Not sure of dates or
anything yet...but he's headed to Hawaii this holiday season and we'll work
out the details!

Aloha,

Bob

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-03 Thread Jon BALER
I'm still working towards my goal, but I am on track to meet it. My goal
is to ride 300 days this year, and I track them by posting a photo from
each day. I've been done this for a few years now, but I take a break for
a couple of years in between to keep it from getting to repetitive.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jon_baler/albums/72157664277091668

I'm up to 281 days/photos, but have some holiday vacations coming up which
will limit my riding days. Highlights of this year:

   - Seattle to Vancouver bike tour via the islands with my wife, which was
followed up with renting bikes during our Alaska vacation with extended
   family.
   - Transferred to a new office in May, which completely changed my
   commute.
   - Trained for and completed a 100 mile mountain bike race.
   - Rode every day in October.

I find it way more interesting than keeping a mileage log or using strava.
:)

[RBW] Re: Riv Allrounder Cockpit/Parts Change Up

2018-12-03 Thread Craig Montgomery
I've gone through all those permutations, including Bullmoose, on my AR
over the past two decades. Have short arms/torso which makes positioning
problematic. Eventually settled back onto drops, but this time VO
Randonneurs. For me it was the lack of hand positions on long tours that
killed the Bullmoose. With the moustache bars it was the too low position
without having the stem up around your chin. I rode with Noodles for years
but the VO Randonneurs with their long reach and palm-filling slight uplift
on the straight sections was the clincher. Plus the shallow drop allowed an
on-the-drops climbing steep dirt grades position that was comfortable but
allowed a wee bit of stretch for a sore back. Don't think I'll be going
back for the duration.

[RBW] WTB: Challenge Paris-Roubaix Clincher, Single or Pair

2018-12-03 Thread sameness
Hi all, I'm looking for either a single or pair of Challenge Paris-Roubaix
tires in the polyester casing (not the cotton variant).

Any condition considered, and used preferable since I really only need one
of them to test clearance on a new roadie I picked up.

In the current lineup this would be the Paris-Roubaix PRO
, but
I'd be up for checking out the plain vulcanized clincher if you have one or
two.

PM me with what you've got and a price including shipping to ZIP 90064 and
we can take it from there, please and thanks!

2018-12-03 Thread Reid Echols
The Gryphon seems to have found a happy home here in Austin, but you never
know! My BMC (and now my Soma GR) was a similar offender. The tall tube on
the Clem gives it a very stately presence.

I'd say if you want to run drops the Appa may well be a touch long for you.
If you want to run Jones, bullmoose (like I am), or albatross, it may well
be spot on. I've got a lot of seatpost showing compared to my other Rivs.

Cody,
I can't speak to using it on the rear, but I'll betcha someone's tried
it at least once! ;-)

Riv forks (canti-Riv forks, that is) generally have barrel braze-ons
high up on the leg and intended for use with this rack. Sadly, I never
made the leap for the Hunqapillar I'd dreamt of when I acquired the
rack. That and my Legolas doesn't have rack mounts.

I believe it also works with the Platrack system.

I'm 6' 4'', with around a 94PBH. I believe I was an inheritor of your Singular
Gryphon a while back? That was a great bike, and fit me pretty well, if that's
any indicator :) I also ride a 65 Clem H (which I believe you have as well?)
and it's on the upper Frenchiest end of what I'll fit, I'd say. More pics of my
setup on that bike, and the Gryphon, on my instagram if you're curious:

I quite enjoy your blog, btw--nice to see tall-guy bikes set up well.

Re: [RBW] FS Feeler: 62cm Appaloosa frameset, RBW Blue

2018-12-03 Thread Eric Daume
How tall are you fellas that are riding a 62cm Joe App? At 6’3” with a 32”
saddle height, Riv’s geo chart puts me near the top end of a 58cm. I’m
wondering how that compares to actual experiences.

Thanks,

Eric

ONCE AGAIN, now for $325 (or best offer). Got teased along by a couple
tire-kickers but need this out of my garage!

Alternatively if you are interested in a Bruce Gordon touring rack, let me know.

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: Snow!

2018-12-03 Thread Patrick Moore
This sort of piddling little dusting is nothing to the epic falls that you
experience up around Woodland Park, but for us high desert dwellers, with
average (citywide; 5" to 14") 9" of precipitation a year in a normal year
-- we've been in and out of "severe" drought for the last 5-7 years -- an
unusually early snow fall that *actually stays on the ground for a few
hours!!!* is something to remark. I was riding the 2003 Curt through the
snowmelt and found the little excursion delightful.

We've not had "real" snow for several years -- these falls are
once-every-few-years. (Last 2016? rode to church that morning too, ~3-4";
this time on dirt acequia roads, on my Bontrager Race Lite; council
President said, "That's crazy!" I replied, "Great fun!").

Re: [RBW] Re: FS Feeler: 62cm Appaloosa frameset, RBW Blue

2018-12-03 Thread Reed Kennedy
Just wanted to chime in here and mention that Reid was an absolute pleasure
to deal with. He was honest and reliable throughout our trade. Plus he’s a
nice guy who genuinely cares about bikes and is just plain fun to talk to.

When Fedex screwed up the frame and parts he shipped me Reid was super
about it. Not just making sure they made it right (they did) but also
kindly and paitiently listening as I freaked out a bit, then helping
however he could.

If you’re a tall person looking for a nice Riv you already know the
Appaloosa is hard to beat. And you won’t find a better person to buy it
from than Reid (or a better price)!

Highly recommended.

Best,
Reed
(With two “e’s”.)
