2018-12-31 Thread Jonathan D.
I just checked the list before I purchased a gift certificate. The value I get
just out of the newsletter and blahg is worth a lot. I hope Riv is able to do
what it takes to keep going and continue to provide unique and great products
with an amazing team and community. Thank you to everyone at Rivendell and
Rivelo and Happy New Year to you all.

Re: [RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2018-12-31 Thread Drw
I’m having a hard time believing a Fabio’s chest is 44 liters. I had one and
there were a number of things that I didn’t like about it. Mainly, the more you
pack in it, the weirder and more unweildy the shape gets. On my saddle, it
would almost turn slightly upside down when fully loaded. Also, roll tops are
kind of a hassle. I’m not saying that’s everyone’s experience, but it was mine.

Anyway, I’d check out bagsxbird by Maybe a former rivendel employee? I can’t
remember. He’s worked out a lot of kinks in the carradice style bag and I’m
loving mine. He has a mega version and it has a long flap too.

[RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2018-12-31 Thread Drw
Man. I am torn. I’ve probably spent more money at Rivendell than any other
single business (besides maybe the grocery store) in the last 5 years. I bought
a bunch of gift certificates those months ago when things seemed dire (despite
being pretty broke).

I wish they’d hire a business consultant or a firm or somethingtake some
proactive steps to shore up the business. I’d rather have a slightly pared
down/watered down riv than none at all.

[RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2018-12-31 Thread Joe Bernard
I'm going to suspend my Not Being Here for a moment to Be Here for this:
Resurrecting that thread over a $20 gift certificate is bullshit. I subscribe
to a dozen bikey email lists and they all generate BUY NOW EVERYTHING ON SALE
crap weekly. The idea behind subscribing to the Riv email is you want their
promotions. If you don't want to hear it and a push to buy $20 worth of stuff
bothers you, GET OFF THE TRAIN AND GO WATCH A TERRIBLE LOUIS CK ROUTINE.

I used the reminder that Riv is a thing I'm into to buy the extra doodads for
my workstand I've been wanting. It wasn't even hard.

I find that thread to be VERY ignorant

Speaking rhetorically here, but if you don’t like upright bikes or seat lugs to
look a certain way, that’s fine... it’s not for you. But these dudes are all
inflamed about it and making super perfunctory demands about the way riv should
run business or design bikes. Meanwhile, what have they made/contributed?

Re: [RBW] Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2018-12-31 Thread Matt Beecher
I still believe that Rivendell is a great store and I appreciate the bikes
they offered and the push they made for "un-racers", so I placed an order
for some items I had been thinking about. I own six Rivs and most were
bought used because I could not afford the model when they were still being
made.

When I could finally afford a high-end bike, the Atlantis was the bike I
was going to buy. There were no other options to consider. The Atlantis
was the first bike I saw and thought "Wow!" Thankfully, it was the one I
wanted the most and it was produced long enough for me to finally get one.

When they offered the MIT Atlantis, I bought one of those too, to be a bit
more careless with and because it offered me the ruggedness of the Atlantis
with 650B wheels in my size. I admit that I was a bit hesitant of this one
at first, but I am extremely happy with it. It is 90% as attractive and
considerably cheaper. I wish it was available 15 years ago...assuming 650b
tires were available too. (Thanks for that push Grant!)

I hope the company works out. I don't agree with everything Grant sells,
but I appreciate it as a whole.

Cheers,
Matt B.

To answer a question not asked, I just want to give a shout out to Rivet. I
tried and used several Brooks saddles over the years (never a Cambian) and
discovered in getting my fit dialed in on my Cheviot, that the Rivet was a
better option, in good measure because its rails allow for being placed
further back (already using a Nitto set-back post). The particular Rivet
saddle I have is the Loveland. The biggest difference visually is the
shorter skirt and the silver-colored steel rails (which I vastly prefer). Rivet

[RBW] Re: FS: Sackville Bags

2018-12-31 Thread Tim Bantham
I'm giving this post a gentle nudge letting folks know that I still have
the Large and Medium Sackville bags for sale. Price for the Large is listed
at $195. The medium is listed at $170. Would consider reasonable offers if
either of these bags are something you are thinking about. PM if
interested.

Re: [RBW] Comparing Fabio's Chest and Large Saddlesack in use [was:Volume of LARGE Saddlsack?]

2018-12-31 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the comparo, Ana. I did own a nice Large Saddlesack and found
the volume a bit disappointing, compared to my Ortlieb Rollers and even the
Medium I'd owned before. If I am smart, I'll stick with the Ortliebs

[RBW] Re: Say “Ahhhh” Brake Pads

2018-12-31 Thread Garth

Yes ! I do this with smooth post canti pads. I never ever ever found
any benefit to the long pads when they became a thing in the 90's. The
Suntour XC Pro original pads were Superbe Pro road sized and shaped and are
the best brakes I've used. The Kool Stops have an internal frame in the pad
but it's not the full length of the pad, it only goes to the last notch in
the pad, which lend itself perfectly to a chop with some good shears or
anything else you want to use. Depending on the frame, the frame end may
require a touch of filing.
