[RBW] Re: Shoes for rambling.

2019-01-12 Thread Drw
My “bike” shoes are more often than not what I wore to work that day, but on
overnights or long trips I have new balance trailbusters. Nothing special and
sub 60$, but they stick to vp pedals, look good around town and are almost
substantial feeling on hikes. (I’m not really into the barefoot thing)

[RBW] OT- Death Valley on foot

2019-01-12 Thread Bob B
Hey Ant! I’m envious because DV is one if my favorite places in earth and my
wife and I have backpacked in there quite a lot. We always do the vegas rental
car method too.

You should be conservative as to where you drive the car, always but even more
so with the shutdown. When the road signs say 4x4 only, you should really take
heed, or carefuy drive only a a mile or two in if that gets you where you wanna
be. You wont get a cell signal in there and flats are common. The rangers, if
any are working, will have the latest on road conditions. Sign in at the
visitor center if you plan to go into the back country and tell a friend at
home your plans... sorry if you already know this.

With the shutdown services are limited. Check social media and call the visitor
center at furnace creek—I think that is being kept open by funding from a
private foundation.

A good resource is Steve Hall’s website www.panamintcity.com ... check his
pages on death valley basics and read up on safety and park regulations (no
fires, etc)... very important to do your research for route planning too if
youre going deep into the back country. Steve uses an interesting technique
using a mix of google earth and gps, and has hiked hundreds of canyons, many of
which are seldom visited. He posts detailed trip reports with photos and maps
that are great reference if you decide to mimic a route.

He’ll also tell you to get Michael Diginnet’s book, Hiking Death Valley, which
I can confirm is worth every penny. Its one of those epic labors of love.

DV is a beautiful place. So huge and expansive, otherworldly, truly wild. Be
safe and I hope you have a great time!! Carry lots of water! I hope you post
pics when you’re back.

And feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

"2” be became "RBW" on most models (not Clem, I think) because of something I
harped on for years*: Rivendells didn't say "Rivendell" enough on the frame.

Roger noticed there is no ‘2’.

Yep the new decal has the fish and the anchor and the mesh netting, but no ‘2’.
The Rivendell Atlantis is 10x as important and significant a machine than the
original Bridgestone Atlantis ever was, so I think the ‘2’ deserved to be
dropped.

[RBW] Re: Shoes for rambling.

2019-01-12 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
I tend to wear barefoot shoe's off the bike, but always wanted some extra
padding/stiffness on the bike, even with platform pedals. I may give
Patrick's extra inserts idea a try.

My current "biking shoe" is a pair of older Puma sneakers, with soles
somewhere between the Sambas and *old school* volley ball shoes. I wear
Sambas for other sports, and would happily use them for biking as well. I
tend to buy shoes that are pretty roomy, and that can make a big
difference. I'd suggest going to a discount shoe outlet that sells fancy

If you are interested in other barefoot style shoes, also look at Merrell,
they make ones with several different thicknesses of sole.

+1 on the Shimano GR-7. No problems walking in them. They have a nice and

[RBW] Shoes for rambling.

2019-01-12 Thread William R.
I’ve always found the traditional Vans bottoms to be great in dry conditions,
but add a little water and they have been really bad in my experience. So I
don’t wear them anymore. Lately my faves have been Addidas Stan Smiths.
Previously, I liked the Sambas, but the Smiths are even better. I have a couple
pairs that I got at an Addidas outlet store. From time to time my wife drags me
to DSW. I always see if there are any crazy deals on similar Addidas with
uniform, flat bottom treads. I’ve bought a couple Pairs of Sperry’s that way
and they have been great too. I figure anything designed to be grippy on the
deck of a boat will work well and they do! For winter I recently bought a pair
of North Face boots that are water proof and insulated, but otherwise are
designed more like a sneaker. They have a slightly lugged sole that is overall
flat and uniform. Nice and warm and grippy on the pedals wet or dry. They are
called Back-to-Berkeley Redux. These were not cheap though.

[RBW] Where does "plus" start really helping?

2019-01-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Segueing from another thread where many respondents urged "plus" over
regular 29er tires: I've got my own twist to the question. I'm thinking of
700C X 60 compared to 650B X 75 or so.

For mixed pavement and non-technical but sandy terrain, what would "plus"
size tires add to 60 mm tires? My concerns are principally sand flotation
and bump cushioning, not traction on steep, technical trails.

1/3 to 1/2 of my riding on this bike (Matthews) is on pavement, and I am
very particular about pavement rolling quality, so much so that I happily
give up some sand flotation and dirt road cushioning for good pavement
rolling. And the Big Ones, tubeless, are very, very good on pavement at my
preferred compromise pressure range of 18-20 psi.

And the Big Ones at true 60 mm are noticeably better on our sand than the
50 mm Furious Freds they replaced. (I can negotiate patches up to 3" deep,
but most of my routes -- this is summer, dry -- are 1" to 2" deep.)

So, since 2.8s or 3s would undoubtedly be better in sand and on rough dirt,
I guess the question comes down to: how well or badly would "650B X 75 mm
tires roll on pavement, compared to (again, wonderful) 60 mm Big Ones on
pavement?

In particular -- since you'd run 75s quite a bit lower than 60s -- how
might the sidewall flop of 650B plus tires at 15 psi compare to that of 60s
at 20, on pavement? 60s at 20 do flop, but, to me, acceptably, given my
need for sand flotation and dirt road cushioning; a better dirt-only
pressure would be say 16-17 psi, while the lowest pressure to avoid
sidewall flop on pavement is circa 25 psi. But I choose what, for me, is
the best compromise.

[RBW] Seeking wisdom of 29+ bikepacking vs. 2.1”

2019-01-12 Thread Tom Palmer
Hi all,
I have done several bikepacking trips in Michigan. Nothing crazy bike a lot of
sandy, loose soil especially near Lake Michigan. The switch from 2.25 to 2.8
made a big difference and with more gear on the bike, even more so. I have a
hunting bike to hunt a non motorized area with 2.8s as well and it works where
the 2.25 did not. I also have a 4” tire bike that is usually overkill. For
tires, I love the WTB Rangers in 2.8 and 3.0.
The Boots does look pretty cool.

Re: [RBW] Seeking wisdom of 29+ bikepacking vs. 2.1”

2019-01-12 Thread Eric Daume
Does anyone still make six bolt fixed cogs, or is it strictly DIY? I have a
Tomicog or two still in my bin somewhere, but I don’t think he’s making
anymore.

[RBW] Re: FS: Schwalbe tires - Marathon 700x40mm & Little Big Ben 700x38mm

2019-01-12 Thread Pancake
I bet $15 each or $25 for the pair is more fair, so, updated I suppose.

[RBW] FS: Schwalbe tires - Marathon 700x40mm & Little Big Ben 700x38mm

2019-01-12 Thread Pancake
These came on my Sam Hillborne, they’re well used but held up well on a few
paved and gravel rides for me last week.

Little Big Ben 700x38mm - seems like it’s in great shape, good tread,
reflective strip is good, no issues I can see. $20 for someone to pickup in the
SF Bay Area?

Marathon 700x40mm - “Original” with greenline. Lots of thread left but some
threads came loose near the bead. I’d guess it’s fine, but I honestly don’t
know. Reflective strip is not that clean but still reflects well. $15 for
someone to pickup in the SF Bay Area?

Good setup if you want to try slightly different size tires front and back, the
came 38mm front, 40mm rear which felt good.

Not sure if these prices make any sense - just make a fair offer and let me
know when you can pick up in Napa (I’m in Berkeley, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa
someone’s too).
