[RBW] Re: Silver Legolas on the blug
Jonathan and John wanted a comparison between the Hillborne and Roadini. The Roadini is a really good pure road bike. It’s perfect with 32mm tires without fenders, 28mm tires with fenders. The Hillborne is ideal with 38mm tires, with or without fenders. I’ve run it with 43mm BG Rock and Roads and with 38mm Steilacooms on trails. The Roadini is maybe easier to set up because it’s got 130mm spacing, so you could use ‘road wheels’ you have laying around. The Hillborne is 135mm in back. There’s no question the Hillborne is the more versatile bike. There’s no question the Roadini is the better dollar for dollar value at 2/3rds the price. Both are very worthwhile bikes. Buy the one you want. One of each is the smartest choice. Bill -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.
My next door neighbor used to work for Rivendell before we met. 11 years ago he invited me to ride bikes and the train up to Rivendell HQ. My introduction to Riv was a wonderful lunch talking about bikes and life with Grant and my neighbor, Gary. I also had the opportunity to test ride an Atantis and a 650b Homer. I had never ridden a 650b wheel size and I really liked it. I was in love with the ride and the unracer idea of just riding to enjoy riding a bicycle. 8 years later, after two misguided attempts to create a discount Riv (Surly Cross Check and a SOMA Groove), I found a used canti-Sam on CL. It immediately replaced two bikes, the SOMA and a skinny tire Bianchi road bike. I did feel a little bad since I was just days away from buying a new Sam from Riv. Everytime I hop on that bike I enjoy myself. It turns bad days into good and good days into great ones. I can’t believe how much time and money I wasted trying to create a Riv on the cheap. I have 2 other bikes that I really like for specific purposes but the Sam will probably always be my favorite and, by far, the most versatile. I think Rob repped Raleigh (but it was a few years ago when we talked about it). One of the Rivendells there is his. He's always been great about special ordering parts when I have asked. The Rivendell in their shop window is a double top-tube model with upright bars and looked to have a Riv selection of parts -- Silver crank and more -- when I last walked by. It is conveniently located adjacent to the Ohlone Greenway Bike Path where BART emerges from the ground. Bike (and car) parking in the rear and you can take your bike inside. I have a pugsley running 26x4, and Im not sure cost is the right word regarding climbing. The traction is unbelievable (a good thing) as is the ability to roll over obstacles. Another facet in the GBW’s favor would be the long chainstays. The downsides would seem to come into play more on the third of your travels which happen to be upon pavement. Glad to discover at least one other person dumb enough to ride the Colorado Trail fully rigid! I recently built a modern mountain bike with 27.5x2.8 tires to replace some 29x2.4 tires. the 2.8" was a lot of heft at first but I got used to it. At higher pressures, it can roll pretty quickly. Even at 20-25 psi you can plod along pretty fine. The ability to ride through any terrain, including the loose sand found in Baja, has been indispensable. 29x2.8 would, of course, be heavier and better suited for a larger rider. [RBW] Atlantis touch-up paint, Testors #2135 Russian Naval Interior
Greetings, I recently bought my first Rivendell, an Atlantis. Wanting to be prepared for the inevitable dings, I have been looking for the appropriate touch-up paint (Testors #2135 Russian Naval Interior Blue-Green). Sadly, it does not seem to be available anymore. HobbyLinc[dot]com says it has been discontinued, and amazon[dot]com says it's out of stock and they don't know whether they'll ever get any more. I checked another model-making supplier who also did not have it (but I don't remember which site it was). Can any of you folks confirm or disfirm that this paint has ben discontinued? My local hobby shop doesn't have any. Have you seen any dusty bottles on the shelf of your local hobby shop? If it truly has become completely unavailable that would be a real bummer. I ended up with 2 purple xo-2`s at about the same time last year I only need one and I am looking for a quickbeam/simpleone. I'm looking for a 58 or 60cm frame or bike. I could also consider trading for a matching purple xo-2 for my 5' wife. [RBW] Re: Shoes for rambling.
Spencer, I am sorry to hear of your feet challenges. I don’t know if my experince may be helpful or not. But I have become highly doubtful of any doctor who tells me “x will never heal,” expecially when it is accompanied by “you need to use y to support proper body function.” At age 12, I was told my feet were weak and I “needed” orthotics for life. Using them, my feet became yet weaker, until 2009 when I decided to try going barefoot. My feet strengthened (nutrition is key to this as well as going barefoot, with bonebroth an essential element to building and strengthening), forefeet widened, and within months I was hiking (and eventually running) mountain trails barefoot or in minimalist shoes ... with no more sprained ankes (a common thing with supportive shoes). Feel free to write me off list if you have questions, and I pray your feet heal and you regain full function of them. Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day. 56cm 650B Atlantis
I saw your original post about JA sizing but I'm not sure if it was B4 or after I ordered the Atlantis. I have Billie bars with a 110mm stem. They come back a long way and I feel I would have felt a bit cramped even with a 130mm stem on the 50. FWIW, I had a Berthoud Aspin saddle with cut out on it. I took a chance on a Brooks Cambium C19. The difference was immediately noticeable. Much better. Bike Tires Direct has them for $87.50 shipped. Riv does not carry the cut out version. [RBW] Re: Silver Legolas on the blug
Rick The Legolas and Roadini have completely different tubesets. Maybe you mean geometry? That's also very different, in my view. The Legolas is a cyclocross race bike. The Roadini is a road un-racing bike. The biggest difference is that the Roadini has a much larger stack. This means it is way easier to get your bars way higher than the Legolas. The Legolas puts you in a racing position. The BB drop is 5mm smaller on the Legolas, so my Legolas with 38mm tires has about a 15mm higher BB height than my Roadini with 28mm tires. Even though they are both bike shaped objects, especially if they both have drop bars on them, I consider them very very different. Looking for similarities between them would be limited to "they both are set up to fit me" and "when that's the bike I choose to ride, they both make me happy". I don't know if this is what you are after. If you were looking for a cyclocross racing bike, the Legolas would have been a good choice. The Roadini would not be my first choice as a budget substitute for a cyclocross racing bike. I am not a cyclocross racer, but I am a sometimes mountain bike racer and I do a lot of mountain bike riding at race level intensity. Rivendells in general are intended to be ridden with a smile on your face. The Legolas is the most stark counter-example to that. Cyclocross racing is not fun. Cyclocross racing is very short, very intense, very painful efforts over terrain that a bicycle can barely handle. Few racers are smiling in a typical cyclocross race, until afterwards. Many of my training rides are of this short, intense variety and my Legolas is intended for use in those kinds of rides. I suppose I could reconfigure the Legolas to be a substitute road bike. I could put smooth tires on it, even fenders. I could put a much taller stem, or Albastache bars like the one in the BLUG, and it becomes something other than a cyclocross race bike. I have lots of other bikes for those purposes, so I'm not planning to do that reconfiguration. I'm sure I will someday do a 70-mile road cruise on my Legolas, or a 90-mile round trip to the top of Mount Diablo and back. It's capable of those things, to be sure, but it's still first and foremost a race bike in its central core. [RBW] An LBS success story for a change: Blue Heron Bikes
Blue Heron Bikes in Berkeley is a very small volume Rivendell dealer. They stock Hillbornes and Clems, maybe an Appaloosa or two. Their clearly defined niche though is that they are THE place in the East Bay to go for utility bikes, Bromptons, cargo bikes, e-assist, etcetera. I try to bring them as much of my business as I can. The things I buy from them include, tubes, Newbaums and grips, small parts, bells, reflective items. I went by yesterday to buy tubeless rim tape and tubes to find the interior of the store coated with dust. They had blown out the back wall and were expanding. I had a nice chat with the owner, who has a one-syllable man-name that I always forget: Mike, Rob, Bob, whatever. His history is that he was a sales rep for one of the distributors and lived a life on the road for a long time. He's probably in his mid-50s now. I asked if he was going to expand his offerings or just do more of the things he already does. He indicated he's focused on just servicing his current focus better, which I think is a good plan for a local shop. Be mainstream enough that you can sell all the mainstream bits to your local community, but be the absolute best at some thing that will cause people to come from a much larger radius to see you. "Big" bikes is a great niche in 2019, because it's really intimidating buying something like a cargo bike online. Having a shop that stocks them and knows them is a treasure. I was really happy to see him succeeding. HOT TIP! If you are a Bay Area rider and need/want a 58cm Hillborne. Blue Heron has a complete on the rack to sell you. Rivendell is out of them in 58 and won't have them for some time. The one Blue Heron has on the rack is a caliper brake model. It's in the lovely burnt orange colorway. As it is evident that Rivendellians appreciate wool garments, it got me to thinking about this coat and pants set I've had hanging in my closet for several years. This could be considered New Old Stock as I don't see that Woolrich offers this pattern of plaid at this time. First, I will offer some backgroound information. Some years ago, I was in Bass Pro Shops Outlet store in Springfield, Missouri and found this coat and pants. I was rather taken by the look, construction, and quality of the product. Both the coat and pants were brand new and not returned items (the rack actually had several) but I decided to have them dry cleaned. I never wore them because they are really intended for very cold and snowy weather; which we were not getting at the time. So...the set has remained in the cleaning bag and hanging in my bedroom closet. I really need to make some room in the closet and this set should be in the possession of someone who will use them. The coat is a size Large which, according to the Woolrich size chart should be a 42-44 chest. The pants are a 36 inch waist. The blend is 85% Wool and 15% Nylon for both. The coat is lined with a tan cotton twill lining and is all button closure for both the coat and pockets. The pants are not lined but have an elastic cuff at the bottom of the legs. Now, wouldn't these pair up nicely with a Rivendell Grandfors Axe or Hatchet! Would bring out one's inner Paul Bunyan, eh? As mentioned above, I've bumped my price down to $140.00 shipped CONUS. Please send me a private message for any questions. >>> >>> Also, thanks to lambbo for his recommendation for better >>> photographs, I've added on a couple which I hope will help. please
[RBW] Re: Silver Legolas on the blug
Bill I was admiring your Legolas post from back in April, there was some discussion of the similarities b/w the Legolas and Roadini in tube set, etc, was wondering what the differences are. Is there a higher bottom bracket for cross, for instance? Rick. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Shoes for rambling.
I've been pretty happy with the 5.10 Freerider Pro. I don't have a lot of time or miles on them yet, so I can't speak to how they'll hold up. They are on the warm side, though, so if you're in a hot climate, you may want to take that into consideration. [RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.
New to road riding in 2001, I followed the hoi polloi and went lighter and trendier from Trek Navigator to Fuji Touring to a KHS race bike. They were progressively lighter and less comfortable. All steel frames though! In 2005, I came across Rivendell while looking for a part online at the Harris Cyclery website. Particularly the Rambouillet. I was intrigued by the "unracer" mindset and riding without being hunched over or clipped in and still staying up with others. In 2006 I ordered the Ram (which is currently out of r a repaint) and was just wowed by its ride, fit and finish. A pretty bike that got lots of positive comments and is easy to "just ride." I followed that the next year with a used canti Saluki off this list for touring. TBH, it was under used as I found touring was okay but not really my thing and I passed it on, again through this list. I picked up a 1995 Road Prototype frameset again from this list in 2009. It has a level top tube and short headtube. It also has standard Waterford front geometry coupled to a slack seat tube angle and longer stays that are signature RBW. 4 1/2 CM larger than my size in a 700c bike, it fits great with a 650B conversion. This bike was made at Waterford from Reynolds 753. Last Summer, it developed a crack in a chainstay. I emailed pictures to Grant who replied that it was very fixable. A frame builder in Clearwater FL was suggested to me and the tube was successfully replaced. It is being repainted this weekend (first coat) and I'll get it back in about 2 weeks. The cost is about 1/3 that of a new frame from Waterford or an RBW made by them. I'm looking forward to getting both back and building them back up in new ways. It will be just lke 2 new bikes! I've put about 15K on the Ram and 10K on the Road, thhe rest of my miles (about 52K total) spread around on other bikes no longer here and 2 that are still around. The Riv way is not always entirely in synch with my own tastes (some of the current bikes, pine soap or hatchets for example), but the over arching ideas of bridging gaps with bikes, of their being an extension of ourselves, and being like a 6th sense that helps us take in the world around us resonates strongly with me.
