[RBW] Hillborne dropbar, bar-ends: Cross shifter housings then cables?

2019-01-16 Thread Pancake
Looks like the prebuilt Hillborne with dropbar and bar-end sfifters has the
cable housings cross in front of the headtube, then the cables cross again
under the downtube. But my assumption was not to cross them at all. Right shift
cable stays on the right, same for left.

Is one way right or is it a form vs. function sort of thing? My only guess is
it may avoid rubbing the headtube?

[RBW] Re: Hillborne dropbar, bar-ends: Cross shifter housings then cables?

2019-01-16 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've done that on bikes with drops and bar-ends when possible, to protect
the frame. It is not conventional practice, but neither right nor wrong.
Did it on my A. H. Hilsen and indexing seemed a little problematic with
socket head water bottle bolts in the down tube, underside braze-ons. The
shifting wires rubbed them.

I've replaced them with domed, button heads. The problem would likely
return with anything I mounted on the underside of the down tube.

Note that mine is a Toyo and the MIT bikes appear to have their down tube
cable stops much closer to 6:00 on the tube rather than 3:00 and 9:00. That
could work better.

If I revert to the usual cabling convention I'll put transparent helicopter
tape on the lower part of the head tube where rubbing would occur.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-01-16 Thread Leah Peterson
O’Ryan of Michigan,
Surfing. This former citizen of God’s Country (ND/MN) has a deep and abiding
irrational fear of Great White sharks. I have watched Shark Week for YEARS, and
there is no going back; I cannot unknow what I know. And what I know is
certain: they are waiting - with their soulless black eyes and rows of razor
teeth - WAITING for me down there in the deep. So, this rules out surfing
unless it’s in my swimming pool on a windy day. And so far that has met with
poor results. Also on the list of irrational fears: flat tires, furniture
shopping, and necrotizing fasciitis. But, the right boots to wear surfing would
be ones with a wicked blade affixed to the toe for self-defense against the
shark.

Back to bike trips.

So we all gathered at breakfast and J asked, “Well, did we decide what we’re
going to do this weekend?”

I did my best pitch. I emphasized BEACH TOWNS and OCEAN SIDE and COOL FOOD
VENUES and casually mentioned there would be a little tiny bit of 40 miles of
biking and I was met with silence and suspicion emanating from three pairs of
eyes at the table. I could see them telepathically working together to thwart
my 40 mile bike ride plans. Ganging up on me silently, that’s what they were
doing. There comes a time when a woman knows she’s going to have to switch
tactics.

“You know what I’d really like for my birthday next month?” I said in a velvety
voice.

They were left defenseless. There was really no other option when I pulled out
the birthday card.

“Can I rent one of those bikes with a motor on it?” asked J.

I winced. “Ok,” I said, “so we just leave the Clem home?”

“No, we need the Clem for the pictures!” he said. “We’ll simply hide the e-bike
and pose with the Clem.”

So, I am just going to strap the Clem to my rear rack. Because pictures are
important! And also, family harmony.

So that, my friends, is the current plan. There’s a 3 day weekend coming in
Feb, and I’m pointing my Bosco bull moose bars toward it.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-01-16 Thread Matt
I can't recommend the Ventura-Ojai path enough. It's completely car free
from the beach to Ojai, with just a few hundred feet on streets coming out
of Ventura, and it's very easy riding, no hills—it's an old rail line. It
is 15 miles up to Ojai, so depending on your yahoos' appetite to ride, it
might be a lot (especially on the 15 back) but it's so, so beautiful up
there and Ojai is a great place to have lunch and spend the day at the
farmer's market or at Bart's Books, which bills itself as the world's
greatest outdoor bookstore and that's not an exaggeration (see pics).

https://photos.app.goo.gl/1X5c1gmsZRDzWy4MA

If you ever get there with people who want to ride for hours and like to
climb dirt, you can veer off the path, cross 33 and go up Sulfur Mountain
(then back down the other side, through Ojai the other way and return down
the path to Ventura). It's unbelievably stunning up there because you can
see clear to the ocean on one side and on the other across the Ojai valley
to the Santa Ynez and the Topatopa moutains in Los Padres National Forest.
I unfortunately didn't get a pic of that view last time I was up there but
we did ride a short way off the trail and found an old bus completely
burned out from the Thomas fire.

The only downside to the 15 miles of the path is there's not all that much
between Ventura and the outskirts of Ojai. There's a park a few miles up
with bathrooms and water, but there's nothing commercial until you get back
into town.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: 54cm Quickbeam w/ mounts on seat stays and fork

2019-01-16 Thread Joe Bernard
Welll, the answer isn't so clear. The TT length between 54, 56 and 58cm QBs is
only 1cm, and starts at 56cm on the 54, which is quite long for a dropbar bike.
So if you can handle the ST length on a 56 (too tall for me), the TT is 56.5.

If you have rings in the 46/36/24 vicinity as well, all the better, but if
arms is what you got, arms is what I'll take.

I have an almost uncomfortably large cache of parts, and I also have cash

So love the color and woody fenders depicted in several pics. The only flaw in
the Cheviot from my perspective is there is not a 64cm or 65cm rendition of it.
Fortunately Will designed and Grant oversaw a Jumbo Mountain Mixte (as part of

So love the people and products of RBW.

Kai and Wally,
I called Riv and talked to Will (large rider advocate) in addition to the
multitude of other talents he displays and performs at RBW headquarters.
He said the XL would be the ticket for us triple digit PBH measurements. He is
getting a Large but said they are offering a 4th size XL for us triangular 68cm

staching away the cash.

I have a Nitto 31.8 quill stem (I think it is called Ui-12) that I mounted

was taller, so it is basically brand new. I think it is 100mm extension. 4
bolt faceplate vs. the VO's 2. I will sell it for $40 shipped CONUS.

If you have the bars, then you probably have the stems, so why not get the
quill adapter and clamp the road stem with the bar onto the adapter? I
find that this method is nicer than the 31.8 quill, since you might have

if you/family havent been here before, and don't live near an ocean, i'd
recommend riding the bike path from marina del rey into malibu. you'd hit
the venice boardwalk (you could even drop into the canals), santa monica,
the pier and third street if you want, and some nice coastline a little
further north with some decent restaurants. it's totally flat with a ton of
stuff to stop and do and see to keep the kids engaged. the only downside is
that coming back, you'd see all the same stuff. I think a lot of us who
live here, like Irvine because it can feel more "outdoors" than most of the
urban LA area, but if you come from a more outdoorsy place, I worry it
might be disappointing.

Drw, I believe those are magnets to attach a combo hex wrench to. This is a
thing Grant is planning for all Rivbikes.

[RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.

2019-01-16 Thread George W Millwood
I was reading a cycling magazine that was running a series of articles on
bicycle builders when they announced with some sadness that Bridgestone was
finishing up in the USA and that Grant was setting out on his own. I
enrolled for the boblist, I think that's what it was then, bought a bunch
of bits and pieces and set about civilising my Trek hybrid. I changed the
seat, the seat post, the bottle cages, the stem and bars a number of times,
the wheels, the drivetrain and finally I bit the bullet and bought Atlantis
Frame No 93. I still have it and still ride it and shortly I will complete
the transformation and replace the brakes.

Grant changed everything about how I ride, I owe him an enormous debt which
is why I still buy my bits from Rivendell when I can get them across the
counter at my LBS.

[RBW] Re: Take-apart Cheviot?

2019-01-16 Thread Garth
 Go to S&S website's link and contact a builder(s).

http://www.sandsmachine.com/#retrofit

http://www.sandsmachine.com/fbplist.htm

Even tandems can be coupled and cased. As for fitting in a case for
travel, refer to the list on the retrofit page as well as the builders
contacted. Someone who does couplers often like Bilenky could answer about
a case for an *atypical *long wheelbase bike such a the ones Riv sells. I
suspect it would require a tandem case, though a guess.

[RBW] Blug of 1/7

2019-01-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Not unrelated to the thread about historical Rivendell match-ups: Grant's
Blug of 1/7 contains a lot of interest, including the most eloquent and
heartfelt (I assume) explanation of what he has been doing with Rivendell
and how his focus has changed. I certainly don't agree with everything he
stands for, or desire everything he designs, but I wholeheartedly like and
support his business model: Love something useful and beautiful, make it
barring as few holds as you can, with a staff you really care about and
care for and pay as well as you can, and market it with a fervor of love
and not by sly, cynical manipulation of people's subconscious fears and
lusts. Hell, even if Rivendell was in the business of making fancy trivets,
I'd have to support it simply because of their honesty.

*And* there is a lengthy 1990 Grant interview of Tom Ritchey from a
1990 *Bicycle
Guide* (remember that one?), followed by some readers' letters; really
surprising at the depth and detail of the discussions; you find that now
only in aficionados' blogs. I have to say that while BG was excessively
roadie, it was one of the best cycling magazines for its detail and
thoroughness; no wonder it went out of business!

Finally, Grant asserts that the highest, best, noblest kind of riding is
riding to the store. (I am being metaphorical.) Sheldon said the same. I
have to agree, though only if that makes going to the store *fun.*

And, there is a very interesting

It's hard to wrap your head around long chainstay bikes.. until you thrown
your leg over one and ride.

Then the head gets it.

[RBW] Waterford Series 22

2019-01-16 Thread Fullylugged
Considering the current price for a new frame (2,300) and fork (350 and up),
this is a great deal for someone that this bike works for. I am thrilled with
how my almost NOS RS12 (bought on this list and set up a la Riv) came out
doing a 650 conversion. It currently has Soma New Express 38s on and really is
the bomb. The 12 was the forerunner to the 22, I believe. Hope yours sells.
