[RBW] Ride Report, Brothers in CA

2019-02-18 Thread Neil Doran
Ah, so great! Your description of Tomales and points south was spot on. I also
enjoy that heavy salt air that is always a bit surprising the way it hits you.
Hopefully you enjoyed Pt Reyes Station to some degree, one of my special places
in that part of the world.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-02-18 Thread Joe Bernard
KC, one caveat I'll throw out there right away is most front hub motors seem
sized for slightly larger dropouts than Riv forks use. I also have a bit of
trepidation about how slim the blades are.

Those front hub motors are not a good candidate for Rivs, in my opinion, plus
in general are overpriced for what you get. I think mid-drives or that
Copenhagen thing are the way to go.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-02-18 Thread Kathy Carroll
Keith, I am interested in your input. I don't want to spend what I know
I would end up spending for a purpose-built e-bike. And I really don't
want another bike. I have 3 right now that I can justify my reason for
each, but that's more than enough for me. Plus my husband and I are
equally matched so we can ride together. Whatever decision I make, it
looks like he will follow.

I love my Cheviot and want to ride it. My husband likes his "main" bike
too.  I have decided on the front hub because it seems like a reasonable
way to go - I think we can install ourselves, we can also easily remove
if we want. I love to bike and don't want to coast along. We have an 11%
(per the website I used to calculate) grade facing us immediately as we
leave our driveway. That's enough to keep us from just grabbing the bike
and taking off - we just need a boost to get us easily on our way. The
rest of the time, I want to feel like I'm riding.

The 650B wheel size limits some of my easy options, but I found a
company I think will work. Interested in input.

If you have a frame/bike you already like, one of these kits can be a
great option. I'd recommend researching mid-drives vIt swes hub
motors, as each has their pros and cons. I have noticed that the
majority of new e-bikes I see use mid-drives. A purpose-built e-bike
will have the benefits of  cleaner cabling and may be more secure in
terms of reducing the chances of the battery being stolen. But, you
will pay a fair bit extra to get the good quality component level you
already have on his Rivendell.C

I really like my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. It meets all your requirements except
showing trails (I think it uses OpenStreetMaps so no bike paths).
Additionally, it's very low-profile. I especially like how customizable the
different screens are so you can have as little information as you'd like.
RidewithGPS integration is great (also does Strava but I can't speak on
that) and many people seem to prefer its interface to Garmin although I
haven't used a Garmin.

-locate current actual location
-show trails as well as paved roads
-show elevation
-be no larger than a smartphone

It would also be cool if it could sync to something in a way that could

-link to an online history of rides and routes

Any direction of where to look and what to look at would be appreciated.

Re: [RBW] Re: Biking trip in CA?

2019-02-18 Thread Leah Peterson
Ryan, are you really converting a Rosco?! That is so exciting! I think your
idea has true merit; he really wants both things; so I will look further into
the Copenhagen/Bionex thing. I know where his head is at - if he’s spending so
much on the e-bike, he should get the motorcycle, but then he’ll have to ride
it sans the rest of the family, and then he won’t ride it much. My father in
law and my husband had motorcycles and rode together; I’m sure he misses it
dearly (his dad died unexpectedly in 2010). Riding bikes has really been a
compromise for the benefit of having us all together. But he would enjoy it
more if it had a motor. Some folks are like that! I’m so excited for you - have
you ever been to RBW HQ? I really hope you’re planning to take a lot of photos
and provide a lengthy report back here.

Kathy, will you keep us in the loop as well? I’d love to see how your bikes
turn out. I sympathize about the hills - they keep people off the bikes here
and it’s a shame. I have two girlfriends who will ride with me only if the
weather is perfect. They are athletes and aren’t afraid of the hills, but the
other 99% of people are. I’d love to see more folks out on bike, motor or not.

Cheers!

We are going to convert our bikes in the next couple weeks with a front hub

Leah,
Although I love the variety of riding my multitude of bikes (mostly Rivendells)

I confess to the joy a simple boost that an e-bike provides. I fully expect to
own one someday. I see your husband’s logic about a fully designed one from
the ground up. Expensive is the correct word there to buy a quality one is
$3999 up. Hence is likely second guessing. To double your riding joy with the
man you love I suggest you consider advising him to consider a demo model.
Just like Rivendell offers some great deals on their floor models this is
especially true of e-bike stores. I have also last years models cleared out
down to seen 1/2 price (think new car models). Often subtle to know difference
but buyers often want the latest year model or the automobile financing favors
it.
A high quality bike like a Rivendell may be simply converted with a high
quality hub based boost. (Copenhagen is a high end one, bionex midrange). This
is the route I will likely go because because Rivendell is one of the few
companies that satisfies my size requirement. Most e-bikes max out at 60cm for
a XXL which is laughable to riders my size.
I will give you personal feedback in about a month after I visit California for
the NAHBS and ride a Copenhagen converted Rosco Bubbe Jumbo Mountain Mixte.
Regardless spending quality time over the next 5-10 years with your supportive
husband will be important and necessary is your sons lives get busier in HS and
they have even less time for an amazing mother like you.
My vote is for a wheel if my report comes back as glowing as I expect it to;
plus a nice little motorcycle 🏍 to boot. Neither is better than the other,
they are each different enough, and cover both of your bases. Bicycling for
you + cycling for him = Win-Win.

2019-02-18 Thread Leah Peterson
Could be the solution to buy the motorcycle and keep the Clem.

I’d abstain from calling him wimpy or weak. Biking isn’t his thing; he grew up
on a farm and they rode motorcycles and snowmobiles. If biking isn’t your
passion, it’s not your passion. His passion lies in his field of work, and he
exerts maximum effort and brainpower there, and is nationally-recognized for
his efforts. If the man wants an e-bike, he can have it. And if he wants a
motorcycle, he can have that, too. And I’ll ride on the back of it.

2019-02-18 Thread Joe Bernard
"..scratching my head in bewilderment at the appeal of an ebike. Have we REALLY
become so wimpy and weak?"

The problem is assuming everybody has to enjoy bicycles the way we do. Ebikes
provide a fun way to get around for people who either can't or don't want to
pedal as much as most of us do. From the pics I've seen Leah's dude looks
pretty fit, so I don't think it's a matter of strength there, it's just not his
thing. He seems happy to pedal along a couple miles, and if you toss in a
bigger trip he'd rather have some power or not go at all.

Is that right or wrong? Nope, it's just where his interests lie. I'd rather see
the guy bridge the gap from Leah's bike to e-assist than go find a motorcycle.
Is my opinion.

Patrick,

Yes, I’m like you - I use a cheapo $10 small crockpot with a removable crock to
heat the wax. I’ve been using Gulf Wax found in any Walmart (in the food
section with the instant pudding and jello - go figure) I’ll have to give MSW a
try after I use up all the paraffin I have. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, if he gets an e-bike, there will be adventures in store. He’s still

and at that price point, he could have a motorcycle instead. But he can’t ride
that with the rest of us, so the pull for the e-bike is still present. We’ll
see!

With plain paraffin, I'd get at most 100 miles before my chains started
making quiet squeaking noises. This is doubled, at least, with Molten.

Also, the nearby Albertson's stopped selling canning paraffin and it is
just as easy to order Molten as the plain stuff.

I know others swear by pure paraffin. It certainly does keep grit from
sticking to the chain.

How do you apply your paraffin? I've never used a double boiler, but I can
vouch for the convenience of a small, cheap crockpot (I think I paid $4.95
or so at GW). I prefer models with removable ceramic pots, the easier to
discard used wax when it gets too dirty (I've been using the same batch for
over a year now; still good, as far as I can tell.)

Patrick,

In what way do you feel Molten Speed Wax is better than pure paraffin wax? I
started waxing my chains about six months ago and can’t say enough good things
about it. I’m curious how something so great could get even better. Thanks,

I've been using Molten Speed Wax for the last 12-18 months, after having
used paraffin and, later, various dry lubes -- forget names; Pro Link was
one.

The MSW keeps the squeaking away longer than paraffin, but keeps the
outside of the chain cleaner (important in sandy, dusty conditions). Using
a crockpot and masterlinks, re-waxing is easy.

SQR might dig in to the Saddlesack design more than into the more
canted-over Carradice designs.

I also wonder about backwards compatibility.

If you were ordering a new wheel:
Would it be cheaper/easier to order the Sram hub and convert to 2x or 3x
Shimano later, if desired? Or order Shimano hub and use XD driver to convert
to 1x SRAM later?

This thread:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/rbw-owners-bunch/SQR/rbw-owners-bunch/kGozV8kYCqw/IuhN8HJSAwAJ

As I've written, rails of SQR dig into the bag a little, so capacity of bag
is reduced a little bit compared to when I attach the bag directly to the
saddle.
Apart from that, it works fairly well.

Patrick,

I took an SQR out to RBWHQ in October to try that out. I didn't find it to
be very satisfactory.
I'll try to post some photos I took of (I think a Baggabond) to see if it
would lift high enough on my 56cm Hilsen to keep it off the tire. The
Happisack might have worked better without also requiring a rack or straps

Re: [RBW] Nitto R-10

2019-02-18 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'd agree with Patrick about the SQR system. I have it in use with three
bags and as many bikes.
Works on 700c wheeled bikes and on my 20" wheel Bike Friday.

As it has no connection to the saddle, the exposed length of saddle rail is
irrelevant.

You do have to have about 4" of exposed seat post to mount the "block" that
it uses. When the bag is removed the black plastic block is all that
remains, with no rack attached to the bike.

PS. The R10 is a very nice looking bit of Nitto!
What are the downward pointing bits at the beginning of the platform?
Aids/anchors for strapping things to the rack?
