[RBW] Re: Cargo e-bikes are an amazing concept, but the options are imperfect

2019-03-22 Thread cclivesay
Edwin,

I’m jumping in here after following this thread - the fr8 looks great! We’re
looking for a car replacement cargo bike and the v8 looks like a winner.

I’ve checked with Workcycles and they won’t ship ebikes internationally but it
looks like converting one with a bafang kit or similar wouldn’t be too
difficult.

I'm about 78 PBH and I have a 51 Bleriot the I find to be just about
ideal. You might want to look for one of those. They are out there, but a
bit hard to find. I found mine on eBay in 2011. Sorry, mine is not for
sale nor will be for quite some time, I hope! Good luck with your search,
be patient, and be sure and post pix here when you find your bike!

Re: [RBW] NAHBS film photo challenge

2019-03-22 Thread Philip Williamson
Thanks!

I had to re-learn how to scan film for this challenge. I had processed
(adjusted the curves) the scans in Photoshop, but I just tried Lightroom
for the first time with some of the same scans. Compared to Photoshop,
Lightroom was much faster, more intuitive, and I got significantly better
results. Lr also let my 'paste' adjustments onto another image. I'm sold.

Now I'm kind of embarrassed of the PS processed ones I already uploaded.

Re: [RBW] Re: Drop Bar Fans: anyone tried the 50cm So Bar?

2019-03-22 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
No worries, John. In hindsight, I should have purchased the widest 52cm
(aka the "true" 48cm at ramp) RM-013's. At the time I made the error in
assuming they were listed/measured the same as the Noodles and thought 48cm
would be a good place to start knowing I could go up to the 52cm if needed
but later discovered the RM013 were even narrower than expected with the
different sizing method at the bar ends. I've never tried the Noodle
but previously considered them and was already familiar with their sizing
but wanted the added flare of the RM013.

My next drop bar build will be use some 46cm Salsa Cowbells I picked up in
another trade which are wider at the hood/ramp than the 48cm RM013.

2019-03-22 Thread john Bokman
Thanks for that Brian. I’ll keep this in mind. Not sure if I want to try an
even wider bar or not at the moment. While I like the 44cm noodles, I’m tempted
to try the “true” 48 cm width, only with more flare, so I might want to try the
52cm RM-013 rather than the 48cm. But as I said, this is all still a project in
my mind at this point. For most riding I don’t think I would benefit from wider
bars. But when I’m hauling big loads, it would be kind of nice to have that
extra leverage up front - especially when I’ve overfilled my load on the front.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell tinkering..

2019-03-22 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
To me, a Riv, above all needs to be functionally sound and should be
ridden. You'd want to use stuff that works and will last a while. Beyond
that, I would say put on whatever makes you happy or whatever parts you
have that are ready to use and ride with.

My custom is a mishmash of high-end mixed with Shimano derailleurs and
plastic fenders, but is perfect and beautiful to me. As long as the bike
gives joy to the rider, then it's a Riv in my book...

I actually have a 26.0 RM013 in 48cm width... which is narrower than and
measured differently than a 48 Noodle and may more closely resemble your 44
Noodle with the flare you’re looking for. I’m no longer using these and found
them a little narrow for my own needs but would be open to sale or trade, if
you were interested in giving them a try. They are currently in storage with
some other spare parts and still need to be unwrapped/cleaned but contact me
offlist if interested and I could grab them one day, take pics, etc.

[RBW] Re: NAHBS Gus photos

2019-03-22 Thread Ryan M.
I would want a wider rim than a cliffhanger for a 2.8. I have cliffhangers on
my Appaloosa and run the 57mm schwalbe g one on them and that is staring to get
a bit Balloon-like and I would think trying to get a larger tire on a rim like
the cliffhanger would run into issues clearing the v-brake arms. The
cliffhanger is not rated for a 2.8 tire, so I would think a new rim would be in
order.

Gahhh, they looks so damn fun! Thanks for the link, the writer could have
said more about what it has rather than what it doesn't but whatever.

Ryan,

Are you wondering if Riv will have their own rims made for it or just which
they will spec? So far, all the GBW's I've seen are using Velocity
Cliffhangers which are the widest rim brake rim available (25mm inside)
that I'm aware of.

[RBW] Re: Drop Bar Fans: anyone tried the 50cm So Bar?

2019-03-22 Thread DarinM
First off, I'm surprised by how much I like the 13's. I thought what I
really like about Noodles are the curved tops and was worried I wouldn't
like these since they're flat, but it's actually more about the long reach
for me. The added flare does exactly what you describe, gives you a little
more room to get wide where the Noodle's are more constricted in the drops.
I use the drops a lot for rough descents and long climbs. I had them on my
Atlantis and am setting my BMC Monster Cross up with them now.

I still love Noodle's, just glad to have found another bar I like as much.
I use both with Shimano R400 brake levers FWIW.

Darin, curious how you notice the difference between your 46cm Noodles vs.
your Nitto RM-13. I ask because I have thought about trying the RM-013.
Although I like my noodles (in 44cm), at times I wish for a little more
flare so my forearms don't hit the tops when in the hooks, sprinting.
