Haha, Joe. An intervention...it’s come to this!

I’m gonna take the Clem to get the super-sonic-wooper-dooper cleaning job REI
offers, so not a total loss. The Clem’s rightful owner didn’t put many miles on
it, but it’s from 2015 or 2016, so probably time to get it cleaned and
frame-savered and tuned up. Especially because it’s mine now. I rightfully
stole it, so it’s rightfully mine and I have standards.

I’ve done a lot of mental gymnastics to find this “bright side” - and if
something breaks on the Betz tomorrow and I’m bikeless again I will be beyond
consolation. Or finagling a way to fit on the #littlesilverclem. Don’t think I
won’t do it.

"Hmm, nix on the silver with yellow."

The yellow is distracting, even in a small pic. Plain silver would look
great, and compliment the black components. The black racks look
understated & don't call attention to themselves. It makes the whole bike
look more muted & serious. This is one of the more interesting Atlantis
builds I've seen.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bikelessness

2019-03-27 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Aaand that’s one of the challenges with modern bike shops. It is hard to
find one that just gets the job done right the first time. I’d suggest you talk
with the owner, letting him know so he has the option of making things right.
Far better to have held the bikes longer and done the job right the first time.
Whoever the mechanic was both times should be shown what they did wrong and
helped to learn how to do it right. You’re describing pretty basic things a
good mechanic would have gotten right.

Second, mechanics of Rivendell bikes are not that hard. If you are comfortable
sitting on the floor or squatting, you really don’t even need a repair stand. I
followed the “learn as I go method” as jobs required. I bought the tools that
job required and that helped spread out the overwhelming nature of the whole
thing, and was easier on the budget. Grin. Derailures still baffle me, and
perhaps always will. Learn what you can, knowing you can always fall back on
your LBS if needed.

With abandon,
Patrick

It'll be interesting to see, Todd. I spent most of my riding time fiddling

Thanks, Brett. The black/silver mix is a slightly unintentional surprise that
came as a result of buying the bike as a built demo, then having them remove
stuff I was replacing with my own parts. It originally had an all-black rear
derailer and mostly-black, (gold pins) chain.

Now that I'm looking at the black/silver derailers and levers, and silver post
and chain, I'm thinking my silver 50.4 V-O cranks (46-30) may look great here.
I was sure it needed black cranks, but maybe not so much. Time to get to work,
then get riding!

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-03-27 Thread Ryan M.
IMHO and this is coming from the way I know I ride... the Cliffhangers are
not a good rim for a tire in the 2.8 inch range. I have Cliffhangers on my
Appaloosa running 57mm G Ones and I just don't see how a 2.8 would ride
well off road (it would be terribly balloon like), especially if you are
thinking about putting knobbies on it...you know, for actual dirt riding. I
like the Cliffhanger for the Appaloosa and have it setup tubeless...it's a
great setup with the 57mm G ones.

I have a new Trek Remedy 9.8 that is running 27+ tires, 2.6 inch stock
tires on 30mm rims and the setup works very well. I think 30mm or above is
the width you want to start looking at for a tire that is 2.8 in width. The
thing is that with a wider tire you will be riding a lower air pressure,
and if you have it ballooned out you really are risking folding the tire
when you hit a turn at speed. Now, this is totally dependent on how you
ride and what, if any, trails you are going to ride. For me, if the
cliffhanger is the widest rim I got, I'm going to stick with a tire in the
2.2 to 2.4inch width and I think the Gus will probably handle pretty great
with those size tires.

Can owners comment on the wider tires with the cliffhanger rims and v brake
arms? Does the roundness of the tire and having a further reach for the
brake pad to contact the rim seem to interfere at all with the v brake
arms?

- Ryan (who thinks disc brakes like the Paul Klampers are a lot better than
rim brakes ;) )

Both unusual (the cockpit, now that I know what that group is called) and
beautiful and the same time. I hope you love it for a long while.

My first ride on James' $4500 MUSA Atlantis 2 1/2 years ago was what let
me know that a Rivendell is for me. It's a great ride.

aggressively on the trail. I don't think there would be any issue unless
you were well down in the low-teens.

[RBW] Re: aluminum under front derailleur clamp

2019-03-27 Thread lconley
The shims are usually used to put a 31.8 derailleur on a 28.6 seat tube.
(or a 28.6 derailleur onto a French 28.0 seat tube) Some manufacturers
include shims with the derailleur. I used a cut down handlebar shim (26 -
25.4) to put a Campagnolo derailleur on a Gitane.

[RBW] aluminum under front derailleur clamp

2019-03-27 Thread jandrews
Hi
I often see some bits of aluminum underneath the front derailleur clamp
to presumably act as a soft shim to keep the seat tube from being
crimped due to over tightening of the clamp?.
I crimped a seat tube before in the past and want to avoid that on my new
Appaloosa build.
where does one find this stuff? Is it a tape? or just strips of aluminum
that are cut to fit in the clamp?
Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-03-27 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
As others here, I wondered about the rim issue. My conclusion is it really is a
near non-issue. Would a wider rim brake rim be ideal? Sure. But the
squirrliness people fear isn’t that big a deal. The Cliffhanger rims are
recommended for up to 65mm tires, that’s 2.6” (2.56” to be exact, which tire
lables generally are not). I have no problem because 1. I trust Grant; 2. MTB
tires used to squeeze onto amazingly small rims before the industry widened
them; 3. I would rather the ride of a lighter fork than disk brakes, and there
aren’t better brake options out there. It’s amazing what a lighter fork
absorbes, and can be easily seen to do so on washboard roads (I don’t recommend
trying this on the bike you’re riding on technical trail. Grin.).

Tire sizes: I believe all frame sizes are 650b/27.5 except the XL. My Large is
27.5, the Medium on the web special page is, and Ed’s Small is too.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] FS 650b Son hub, Gran Bois rim, Lumotec IQ Cyo N Plus, 32 spoke wheel

2019-03-27 Thread Frank Brose
For Sale. Dyno front wheel. Professionally built. With Lumotec light. Very
good condition. Wheel has a few very light scrapes and scratches but the
braking surface is clean. Mileage is low as I generally rode my Riv
Atlantis when I was going to be in the dark.I really don't need two dyno
powered bikes. Best guess is less than 350 miles. Asking $315 net to me
I'll cover the shipping in the CONUS.

- Schmidt SON 20 R 32h silver front hub
- Grand Bois 650B 32h rims
- DT Swiss Competition DB spoke
- Lumotec IQ Cyo N Plus uncut wire with spades attachched. I can send some
xtra spades the buyer needs some and wants to cut the wires to their
preferred length.
- This setup has never been ridden in the rain.

For the record the Son 20 R is now referred to as a Delux. They were
renamed due to German law. Here's the story per Peter White and he would
know:

Schmidt changed the name of the SON20R to SON*delux*. Skip this paragraph
if you aren't interested in German bicycle lighting regulations. ;-) The
reason for the name change is a bit complicated. German law regulating
bicycle lighting is very strict. A dynamo powered headlight must reach a
certain brightness at a certain minimum speed. If you use a hub designed
for 20" wheels to make a wheel with a 700c rim, that wheel will be rotating
at a slower RPM at a given speed than the same hub in a 20" wheel, so the
hub's output will be lower. With a halogen bulb headlight, the light would
not reach the minimum required brightness until you were going faster than
the law requires. But with LED headlights such as the Schmidt Edelux, Busch
& Müller CYO and others, this isn't a problem. You can use a hub designed
for 20" wheels in a 700c wheel and the light will be very bright at low
speeds. Previously, it was illegal under German law for Schmidt to sell the
SON20R in Germany for use in 700c wheels. But the law has been changed,
provided the customer also buys a LED headlight. So now, Schmidt can sell
the SON20R for use with 700c rims, as long as the wheel is used to power
certain LED headlights that produce high output with very little power. So
there's no longer any need to call the hub a "SON20R", implying it's only
suitable for 20" and smaller wheels. Hence, the name change to SON*delux*.

Please contact me off list.
Thanks,
Frank

[RBW] Re: Stockholm/Amsterdam/Copenhagen recommendations/meet-ups?

2019-03-27 Thread Surlyprof
In all places you can get some great suggestions on the New York Times’ “36
hours in ” columns and videos. We also like Atlas Obscura
and Lonely Planet.

Those Dam Boat Guys give a fun tour in Amsterdam
(https://www.thosedamboatguys.com/your-tour/?gclid=CjwKCAjwm-fkBRBBEiwA966fZPJT6Ml6dFM2Emhs7TpoRtfqmQ9q9YZkFCREcN_PgB6wp6zf-BTP5xoCYQYQAvD_BwE).
We really enjoyed a tour of the hidden catholic church. There were several
during the Protestant Reformation and this one was the only one saved and
restored. Ons Lieve Heer op Solder or Our Dear Lord in the Attic. It was
fascinating.
The Foodhallen is great but a bit of a hike. Also really enjoyed the apple pie
at Winkel 43. Very traditional I guess.
I also vote for the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.
The Frozen Fountain and Droog Galleries are cool (and free) for really
interesting Dutch Design.
Spend a little time watching the clocks by Maarten Baas. One’s at the
Rijkuseum and there’s a really big one at the airport. Fun stuff.
If you bike, get a map out to the windmills. They’re not that far. We took a
bike tour that took us out to the windmills and a cheese factory where they
also made wooden shoes. Fun tour on Breezers. Mike’s Bike Tours. Mike’s a
very funny woman who rides in 4” heels!

Copenhagen is my favorite city. Get a cinnamon roll at Meyer Bagheri (bakery).
They ground their own flour. Watch for the royal guards marching through the
streets when they do the changing of the guard at the palace. The Design
Museum is one of the world’s best. Check out the bike bridge (Circle Bridge)
designed by Olafur Elliasson. It’s beautiful. Their foodhall market is also
great. They had one place called Grod totally dedicated to porridge! We had
an outstanding meal at Almanak in the art deco Standard Building by the water.
Their house beer was the best I’ve ever had and they have trampolines in the
sidewalk outside.
We also really enjoyed Leibkoeb, a cocktail bar in a 16th century apothecary
building. Hard to find but well worth looking. We also got a kick out of the
meatpacking district. They still pack meat there but it also houses a lot of
creatives’ studios. We had a fun conversation with a fashion designer, Jenni
Max (I think). IKEA’s experimental, Space10, research and design lab’s there.
Mothers pizzaria was nice there, too.
Kronborg Castle was really interesting. It’s where Hamlet is set.
Freetown Christiania Is pretty wild. There is also a Pedersen dealer there.
Take the no photography warnings seriously there. The drug dealers are very
camera shy!
Jens Olsen’s World Clock is incredible.
Normann Copenhagen is a great furniture/design store in an old theater.
Spring should be a great time to stroll through Tivoli Gardens.
Saw some cool bike shops. Sogreni was the most unique.

Probably forgetting as many things as I’m remembering. Have a great trip!

John
