[RBW] Re: Reccomendation for a car rack

2019-11-18 Thread PaulS
I would really recommend reconsidering a hitch rack. Easier to install, secure,
no paint rub/marks on the car, and they perform so much better.
One big issue you may run into is locking your bike. With a hitch rack, it’s
easy to do. My rack came with integrated locks. Others, just cable lock to the
hitch.
Also, if you have a step through bike (now or in the future), you’ll need a
tray style rack.

2019-11-18 Thread PaulS
How was the Bb height compared to the ECR (which already has a low low BB). I’m
sure it added to the feeling of stability as you said in the blog. Wondering
how this bike would feel with 2.2” tires. If that would drop the BB too much.

Great write up, by the way.

Yes, Paul. Cliffhanger rims. (I bought the prototype Alex test rode). They
are plenty wide (you may want to read Jan's take on rim width being a near
non-issue in terms of squirmyness.).

Deacon Patrick, you Wile E. Coyote. I thought that might have been you. When
I tried to convince Riv it would make more sense to just let me ship that bike
home, they indicated it was already spoken for. Outsmarted by another
enthusiast 🙃

Paul, I won’t pretend to be able to make an educated response to that question.
Comparing the bb drop of my demo with 27.5 wheels to the 29r ECR is beyond my
ability. I will however say that Grant likely thought all that through to the
‘nth degree.

To boot, I don’t think I have an accurate geometry table for that demo model I
rode.

Cheers,

Alex

The Geometry page has been updated with Susie and Gus !

https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry

Myself I'll likely go with the Alex DM24 rims and T610 hubs from Rich@Riv
as I don't ride tubeless and the Cliffhanger's tubeless design can be
difficult to mount/dismount tires, according to a talk w/Vince. That's
what the possible new rim is about, tubeless capable but easier get tires
on and off. They won't be available anytime soon though, "if" at all.

I can confirm the tubeless madness with Cliffhangers. My 27.5 set came (used)
with tubeless tires mounted and one time I let the air get too low..can't get
the front to seal up again. Now I've switched to bigger WTB Byways and they
won't tubeless, either, I bought tubes. I give up!

No compressor. I gave mine away because the neighbors and the cat weren't
impressed with the amazing amount of noise; if I can't pump a tire with a good
floor pump then I'm dealing with something outside the range of how I
understand working on bicycles.

2019-11-18 Thread PaulS
Thanks Alex. I forgot the original was 27.5, not 29.

70mm BB drop isn’t bad at all. 2.2” tires should work very well on it. I know
some complain about the low BB on the ECR but I love it. Just watch the pedals
riding through rock gardens. No issues.

Tubeless is simple. Good rim tape (Stans or Scotch equivalent) and you’re good
to go. If the rim is being stubborn, use the split tubeless method. Works even
on non-tubeless specific rims.

Start at 2:20. No need for the camping mattress garbage (more beneficial for
fat bikes). Just rim tape and tube over it. I don’t inflate it prior to cutting
like this guy. Just cut down the middle, wash off the powder, spray with soapy
water, mount tire and inflate. Done.

Make sure to get a tube with removable core. ie Q Tubes, and I think
Specialized.

[RBW] Re: compatibility question: double FD on triple

2019-11-18 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Best wide range triple for rings under 46t out there is the Shimano CX70,
which Riv used to spec on completes. It still works great. Ultegra level,
but technically designed for a CX bike. You can get it lower than any road
triple mech out there, and it will shift down to a 20t. We've run it was a
triple or a double set up, never any issues at all. It can handle huge
gear jumps, or normal ones. We set up a bike with a 20-46t jump, and it
shifted fine.

[RBW] Choco vs choco-moose

2019-11-18 Thread 'Keith Swanson' via RBW Owners Bunch
Can anyone speak to the practical difference riding between the choco and
choco-moose bars? I've read the description on the Rivendell site but am
curious to hear from others. I've recently switched from a drop bar Sam to
a Clem L with a bosco bar and assume the choco would be somewhere in the
middle (it would be for an Appaloosa). For some reason I find the
choco-moose bars to be more aesthetically pleasing than the plain choco
bars.

2019-11-18 Thread 'Keith Swanson' via RBW Owners Bunch
I can see Leah’s perspective on the names, but I have to agree with Paul that
it should be exactly the bike he wants. I understand completely as for some
reason I do not particularly care for the name Atlantis so am waiting for a Joe
Appaloosa (I prefer the head badge as well) although I think simply Appaloosa
would be better. Silly reasons to prefer one over the other, but when
committing a large amount of money, why not? I do think the single word names
are better-it’s hard to beat Hunqapillar or Cheviot. For what it’s worth, I’m
just finishing building my new Clem L.

I found the draft brochure on Grant's blahg and magnified it enough to read
that he did not want to publicize the numbers because people make ill
informed decisions based on them. I can understand that but if/when I pay

2019-11-18 Thread Leah Peterson
I hear that, Keith, I do. It’s a lot of money and a person should really love
something to drop big money on it.

But if I held to that way of thinking I wouldn’t be able to get the bike I want
from Rivendell. They removed Clementine and put Clem L. If I said “I don’t know
if I can live with that” because I’m a woman and won’t ride a bike with a man’s
name on it no matter how fantastic the bikeI guess I’d be Clem-less.

Instead, I’m living with it, because it’s a great bike.

[RBW] Choco vs choco-moose

2019-11-18 Thread Joe Bernard
The only differences are the Moose locks you into a 12cm stem reach and the
bars in the 'flipped down' position (I've used both). The separate version
gives you lots more options.

If you might be interested in a used ChocoMoose gimme a holler, I have one
hanging around here without a bike to put it on.

[RBW] Re: Choco vs choco-moose

2019-11-18 Thread Adam Leibow
IME anything "-moose" is triangulated and therefore stiffer (can equate to
harsher riding); the benefit is it's more rugged for heavy duty riding and
stiffer (if you are a bigger rider with a heavy pedal this can be a pro).
one other benefit of "-moose" is your bars will never slip down.

2019-11-18 Thread Mark Roland
Back when they decommissioned "Clementine" I wondered here why they didn't
decommission "Clem Smith Jr." instead. But they probably sell more this way.

To the OP's question, I think the weight differences will get lost in the
laundry. (Or the sauce. It comes out in the laundry in the end). Some have
mentioned the livelier feel of the lighter gauge tubing. I wonder how much
lighter a 27lb bike rides compared to a 27.75lb bike? Or thereabouts.

Re: [RBW] Gus or Susie?/Threadless Weight vs Quill Weight?

2019-11-18 Thread PaulS
The weight difference may not be significant; however, I've ridden stock
frames (i.e. Surly) at 5lbs and custom frames at 4lbs. Not much
difference. Surly is butted, but probably 9/6/9? Or something like that.
Custom frame was at 8/5/8. It was a delight to ride. Felt so much more
lively than the stock Surly.

I don't know what the tubing specs are, but I'd venture to say you're
looking at around the same tubing specs as above for Gus and Susie. If so,
I'd imagine Susie to feel more lively. Just speculating

Jacob,

Sounds like a fabulous 4+ days. I don't generally think of record-setting
cold days in November as very desirable. Since they allowed you to cycle
the C&O without mud on a frozen, leaf-covered surface, I might change my
mind. I'm wondering how cold it got at night and what kind of equipment
kept you warm.

Re: [RBW] Gus or Susie?/Threadless Weight vs Quill Weight?

2019-11-18 Thread Garth

FWIW, The original orange Clementine is PERFECT , just utterly the perfect
name and color to go with it. It is womans name, a fruit ? Either/or, it
doesn't matter to me. Calling it a Clem-L(in this case it stands for LESS
the Whole name !) seems like it was edited to suit some agenda over
their original wisdom in choosing the name in the first place. Imagine
wanting to call your daughter Clementine, but "someone in the cheap seats"
in the family complains because they consider it offensive for some reason.
Press them on the validity of those reasons, and they go blanco and it
becomes apparent they've bought into an opinion they've heard, heresay...
which isn't anything at all.

I grew up with an AWESOME Mom . Amazing things happen when you trust your
kids to be themselves, and she instinctively knew this in us all. That's
strength you know . it's not about what you accomplish or don't
accomplish it's about what you ARE ... which is THAT you ARE . in
celebration of this utter simplicity and profondness , yes ... profound
fondness... appreciation real LOVE ... just for Being.

Being-Oneself is neither offensive or defensive, neither defends or offends
in Love there is no "other" at all.

A bullmoose is great if it's the set angle downward that you prefer, if
not, not so much. Stiffness isn't everything, it depends on the rider
preference. It's never as if bars bend and flex in hands like wet noodles,
though some act like it does !

[RBW] IC: 62 CM Hunqapillar F/F/HS

2019-11-18 Thread Zack
Hey all -

Am thinking about selling my 62 cm Hunq frameset. It's in great condition
with a bit of beusage. Kidney bean and grey paint. Have some other things I
could throw in (seatpost, crank, Paul brakes) if you are going to build it
up from scratch and want a head start.

Can add pics soon.

Located in Portland, OR, can ship, but would want to do it through local
bike shop rather than box myself.

Start at $1500 for F/F/HS? Plus shipping if you aren't here? Not sure what
good condition Hunqs should be selling for, life stuff has pulled me away
from having my finger on the pulse of Rivendell pricing. If I am too low or
too high please let me know.

I'm one of those who act like "bars bend and flex in hands like wet
noodles." Well, not exactly, but I've been in two near-collisions in NYC
traffic where I exerted enough force on the bars to twist them downward in
the clamp. I love the stability of my boscomoose bars and I'm considering
getting the chocomoose to try out someday.

Moose anything is great! As for NYC and their superior triangulation, the moose

stem, shifters, brake levers, and bells.
David, if you're looking to test the bars you're welcome to mine for a couple

jacob, I'll second your endorsement. just rode my atlantis back to maryland
from colorado and when people ask best part of the route, I have to say it
was the GAP! C&O not shabby either, and is being increasingly upgraded for
bikes vs its original footpath intent. and yeah, colorado was kinda
spectacular. I believe amtrak will now take you and your fully assembled
bike from d.c. to pittsburgh or vice versa; also will drop off in
cumberland, where GAP meets C&O. It is a spectacular passage, not
viewable by car; also flattish and shady enough I never used sunblock.

[RBW] FS 51cm Joey Appaloosa

2019-11-18 Thread Denise Granger
I bought this Joey Frameset after selling my Sam Hillborne Frameset (too
small). Used most of the parts from the original Sam build except for the
Albatross bars, cork & bar end shifters, brake levers, seat, fenders (honjo
replaced the ones that came with the Sam), pedals and the crankset which I
found used on this site a while back (170mm)(not super great, but works for
me). The Tubus Rack also came with the Sam as well. I still have drop bars,
a few various stems, an additional set of the cantilever brakes (new) and
the Brooks (B17) saddle that came with the Sam. This bike has been great
and I used it for riding to the YMCA and the Farmers Market and Store or
just to tool around. It's an awesome bike but I need to sell to make room
for the bike I just built up for the same purpose and to do some bike
packing on. I am asking $ 1,500.00 for the bike only + cost of packing and
shipping if necessary - but would prefer a local pick up. There are a few
marks on the bike and fenders as it got used quite a bit but it's in great
condition.

Hi All,

Yes I did order a Susie today. I talked to Vince who was, as always very
helpful. I talked size mostly, my longish PBH for my height and my large
feets but relatively light weight put me on a large Susie. I'm pretty
excited obviously.this will make us a 4 Riv household and my first long
chainstay stretch limo Riv. My wifes Betty and my MUSA Homer and Atlantis
make the set pretty complete. Now I just have to figure out which of my 11
other bikes to unload. I'm supposed to getting rid of bikes but the new
Hillybikes have caught my attention since Gus first reared his big head
(tube).
I have some Cliffhangers for it and most other parts, probably will get
some Silver cranks and new shifters for it Have a spare Bosco but might
look for an old Bullmoose bar of some kind...

[RBW] Re: Gus or Susie?/Threadless Weight vs Quill Weight?

2019-11-18 Thread Mark Schneider
So I see some people don't understand that a lighter tubing =a more
responsive ride and more give when you hit large bumps. If they make a
lighter tubed version there's a reason. If you plan on carrying more weight
(or you weigh more)you get the heavier tubing, if you weigh less get the
light one if you only plan on riding with light loads.
The weight difference between threaded and threadless is insignificant. But
lighter tubing should feel snappier and give more when you hit stuff.
Either way this is going to be fun.
