I've had my Radwagon for a year and I have about 1,200 miles on it. It has
pedal assist AND throttle. I can't really imagine having one & not the other!?
Both, have their benefits in normal everyday usage.

Re: [RBW] Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever?

2020-04-21 Thread Robert Tilley
I bought a headset press a while back and have used it twice. I went cheap and bought the Nashbar model which I think I got for $60. I made my own crown race setter using some PVC from Home Depot. That cost only a few dollars.I put it off but a recent project involved installing a 1 1/8" Chris King headset so I bit the bullet and ordered their adapters which were $50. I think it was worth the money to pick these tools up since it means I can take care of these installs myself. Now if I ever need to remove them I'll need some more tools...Robert TilleySan Diego, CA Sent from my BlackBerry - the most secure mobile device From: daban...@gmail.comSent: April 21, 2020 8:40 AMTo: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comReply-to: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comSubject: [RBW] Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever? Maybe I'm just getting into bike projects that aren't necessary whatsoever, but I'm interested in swapping up a couple things on my bikes.I've never replaced a headset before, but I'm contemplating upgrading the rinko-style cups that my Clem and wife's Clementine came with for something swankier. Questions:Is this crazy? The current headsets function fine, purely cosmetic. Is this worth it to me to buy the proper tools? I likely won't have a need to change headset aside from these two bikes. Some sort of diy tools?Or should I just let my LBS take care of this? The main reason I'm thinking about this is I added a Silver2 shifter/mount as a headset spacer (works great) and the wider headset cup looks out of place now that everything's a bit cluttered.Photo here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-99voyFx5D/Thoughts/ideas/suggestions welcome!David

[RBW] Re: In Praise of the Roadini

2020-04-21 Thread Matt Dreher
I've harped a lot about my travails with my 61 Roadini on here and on iBOB,
and having just sold it I may as well bring it up for the last time because
I think it's important to know why you love something.

What makes the Roadini so special is the chainstay length, running from 45
to 46cm and rising 5mm every size. Mine didn't work out for me because I
started wanting to take a very un-Rivendell fit with my bars about level
with the saddle and a 100mm stem. That put my center of mass way further
forward than it would otherwise, which I found had really adverse effects
on my handling. Small position changes like avoiding potholes felt like
they were two consecutive motions instead of one and I felt my rear
reaching its limit of traction under hard cornering too easily. After I got
a bike with 41.5 stays I realized that that's what was going on, I was
taking a position that loaded up my front wheel more and took too much
weight off the back than what Grant was designing for.

That's also what makes it so good for a position that puts your bars
significantly higher than the saddle. If I were to try that upright
Rivendell position on that 41.5-stay bike it would feel awful, far too
light in the front because there's so much weight on the rear wheel. With
the Roadini taking an upright position is fine because the geometry lets
you maintain a neutral weight distribution and good handling.

I'm not sorry I owned it, it was a wonderful bike and it taught me a lot
about how geometry can imply a certain fit. Glad you're all enjoying yours
so much!

13 rides in 21 days rides, so I'm a little behind. Today I did a 2 mile
ride followed by a 2 mile walk.

I left on my AHH with Dyno lights because sunset was just a 1/2 hour away
and I was planning on doing my standard 12 miles. Well, I live in the city
and it was windy, but the buildings helped block it. However, when I got
to the path away from buildings, 1 mile away, I could barely move forward
for the wind on my face. I turned around and rode home, then went for a
walk, instead.

I love seeing everyone's pics and reading all these stories.

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-21 Thread CB
My wife has a RadCity. It has 26" wheels and more or less resembles a
city/hybrid/hardtail. It has a throttle button in addition to pedal assist and
also has regenerative braking. It all went together fine and works as
advertised, but with about 100 miles on it it's too early to say anything about
durability. Looking at the cost of batteries, I expect the bike to be
borderline disposable once the battery starts losing capacity. With luck that
will be a long time.

a reason to be a post without this part! 臘

[RBW] Re: Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever?

2020-04-21 Thread Collin A
Tool wise you could try this.
https://www.bearingprotools.com/products/headset-cup-press

It is relatively inexpensive compared to others. They have a USA portal
site, but it looks like the USA site isn't taking orders right now. In
another time i'd just say bring it to your LBS, simply because how many
times will you end up replacing the whole headset and not just switch out
the bearings? But I am considering buying a whole new bike as a cabin-fever
project so you can ignore that advice!

The silver shifter as a headset spacer is super smart! I may steal that
idea so I don't have to buy that IRD shifter mount adapter...

Cheers,
Collin

[RBW] Re: Ghost shifting on the Clem

2020-04-21 Thread Zed Martinez
I can see the argument for two master links weakening the chain, but I rode
my larger Clem with a two master link splice the entire time I had it and
never had any issue really. Actually, I kinda miss that little two master
link set-up, since the master links didn't wear the same as the chain
around them but they'd both be on the chainring at once it made a really
unique set of ticking noises as the chain started to wear and it was a
useful reminder that I had probably been ignoring my chain, once I figured
that out anyway.

Interesting. I guess that was in the back of my mind, maybe saw it on a

Nope. Part of being an enthusiast is sweating the details.

> Is this worth it to me to buy the proper tools?
I used this DIY guide when I was starting
out (and added the term "bodge" to my shadetree mechanic lexicon.) If
anything, getting a simple headset press which just does 1" and 1 1/8"
headsets might be worth it. I had terrible luck with the DIY one: it's
tough to keep those headset cups straight as they go into the headtube. I
got the one from Jenson

.

> Or should I just let my LBS take care of this?
Doing it yourself is an adventure and a learning experience; going to your
LBS is more convenient and less out-of-pocket cost, they likely could use
your business now, and you avoid the risk of damaging your headset cups.

Good luck,
Ed C.

[RBW] Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever?

2020-04-21 Thread Ian A
DIY tools are easy enough to make with a trip to the hardware store.
Professional tools will make sure the cups seat evenly, but with care you can
get the cups to seat evenly even with DIY.

If the current headsets are functioning well, I'd push you to spend your cabin
fever budget on some RH riding knickers or some nice riding bags or something.

I have a Tange headset on my winter bike which won't die despite 8 years of
gruelling conditions. When the Shimano 105 failed on my touring bike, I
switched to a very economical Tange Passage unit which was low enough stack to
work on my fork/frame combo. It's a frankly excellent headset. I think it was
sub $20.

If you do decide to change your headsets just be aware of stack height
requirements.

2020-04-21 Thread Jeffery Shepherd
Thanks for all the input. For now, I have a left side nitto light mount on
the way. When the local bike co-op opens back up I'm going to sift through
the parts bin and try the centerpull brake arm hack. Maybe the light can
get far enough forward to clear the basket/tire and I can play around with
mounting left or right side.

[RBW] Replace headset on Clem? Cabin fever?

2020-04-21 Thread David B
Maybe I'm just getting into bike projects that aren't necessary whatsoever,
but I'm interested in swapping up a couple things on my bikes.
I've never replaced a headset before, but I'm contemplating upgrading the
rinko-style cups that my Clem and wife's Clementine came with for something
swankier.

Questions:
Is this crazy? The current headsets function fine, purely cosmetic.
Is this worth it to me to buy the proper tools? I likely won't have a need
to change headset aside from these two bikes. Some sort of diy tools?
Or should I just let my LBS take care of this?

The main reason I'm thinking about this is I added a Silver2 shifter/mount
as a headset spacer (works great) and the wider headset cup looks out of
place now that everything's a bit cluttered.
Photo here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-99voyFx5D/

Thoughts/ideas/suggestions welcome!

2020-04-21 Thread Leah Peterson
Hi Doug,

He got a Pedego Interceptor - I call it the Interloper . Got it for a steal on
Craigslist and it works great for him. It’s really beach cruiser-y though; I
don’t know if I’d choose that particular model, but it’s what was available.
There are so many e-bikes on the market and not a lot of them are quality (per
the mechanic I talked to) but Pedego seems pretty solid. They have their own
“dealerships” and there happens to be one in Henderson so that’s where we take
it for service. Pretty convenient! I wish I had a place I could trust to take
MY bike...

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-21 Thread DHans
Good story Leah! I'm curious about JPs ebike. Which one did he buy? I've
been thinking about an ebike for my somewhat hilly 20 mile round trip
commute. The Rad Power ebikes look like a good value.
Thanks,
Doug

[RBW] Re: FS: 60cm Simpleone F/F/HS/Wheels

2020-04-21 Thread Matt Beecher
Why is it that I have a QB and another singlespeed, but I still want this
one too? It serves neither purpose better than the other two (QB is
fendered and the other is "go-fast"), but I want this anyway. I hope
somebody removes the temptation quickly for me.

If this was posted a bit over a year ago, I would have pounced on the
initial post. As it is, I am doing my best not to buy another
frameset...although I have all the rest of the components.

Here's a free bump for the seller and a good price.

Best regards,
Matt in Oswego, IL

[RBW] Re: steps to mount a tire / tubeless is easy?

2020-04-21 Thread 'hobie' via RBW Owners Bunch
Tubeless is basically set it and forget it. If I was traveling by bike
around the world I would use tubes only because I doubt you can get Stans
in some remote village in Vietnam. The less I have to think about my bike
the better. A maintence free bike is the way to go for me. It I had the $ I
would assemble a bike w. a Pinion drive w. Gates Belt, titanium frame w a
Lauf Grit fork. Almost maintence free. A very Green bike.

Thanks

Here's a fun one for you Jason. From the master himself:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny81vcxTZQk

Ian always said what you take for the weekend is the same as what you take
around the world. The only difference is the amount of food and water. Of
course when he said it we didn't have satellite weather like now. So you
had to be prepared for anything and everything. Have been looking for a
stove like that but they're pretty pricey now.

Anton, should I be shocked that your daughter could correctly identify all
