[RBW] Stand up for anagrams!

2020-05-01 Thread tuolumne bikes
There's been some anagram bashing on the "Fancy Cheviot" thread. I spent at
least 1 1/2 hours moving Scrabble tiles around while my wife and daughter
made pizza for dinner. Then I had to find a postcard and a stamp! I'm sure
others suffered similarly to come up with those anagrams, so it would be
good to put them to use.

I suggest reversing the process. Instead of making up names for existing
bikes, anagrams can be used to inspire thinking about the new kinds of
bikes a changing world needs.

The new world needs an auto social distancing bike. One look from potential
riding partners at the paint, graphics, and head badge of the Nut Breath
Greg will keep you riding solo.

The post Covid 19 world will need more cargo bikes with more cargo
capacity. The Grunt Barge is an uber-cargo bike with Extracycle back and
Dutch style bucket front. Trailer is available as an option. Groceries,
building supplies, kids, and the dogs will keep you grunting along while
you slay climate change and build thighs like tree stumps. Also an excuse
to make a really long bike.

I'm anxiously awaiting the artwork!

What's your favorite underutilized anagram and how can it help change the
world?

Happy May fools day, Carl

[RBW] Re: Causes for bike noises

2020-05-01 Thread tuolumne bikes
Creaks, usually on the downward pedal stroke of my stronger right leg:
usually the saddle (stand up to test), worst case (twice now) cracked drop
out. It's odd, but when you hear a noise timed to pedal cadence, the ear
points to the pedals, crank, bb regardless of where it's actually coming
from. I think it's uncertain enough that the bias from the brain will make
it seem to come from the crank area.

[RBW] Luggage & groceries!

2020-05-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Waiting for Chauncey to deliver the new (God willing) Riv Road clone, with
custom rackset, I've been reduced to shopping with my 1999 Joe gofast with
Camper Longflap. Today's ride was an extended detour to the nearest
Sprout"s and local grass-fed, free-range meat/egg Keller's.

I'm sorry, but certainly the Camper LF, and even the Large Sackville, is no
match for big Ortliebs when it comes to serious grocery shopping. I filled
up the CLF at Sprout's and had to use the Velo Retro musette (I keep 1
stashed with the tool kit for each bike) for the ~3 lb of various sausages,
1 lb gr beef, and 2 personal-size packs o' chips. Fortunately, home is 3/4
mile from Keller's.

With just rear Rollers -- the setup on the new bike will allow for Sports
lowriders in addition -- I could have carried it all with a great deal of
room to spare, and the bike would have been far less top heavy -- holding
6-pack in right hand as I kept hold of bike with left, I had the bike 3
times fall over on its side due to weight imbalance, in the checkout line,
as other shoppers looked on diapprovingly. One-hand rescues in each case,
and the drawstring neck prevented spillage, but still, not conducing to the
air of effortless mastery that I like to project.

The weirdest and hardest to isolate ticking I ever fixed was the clamp
sleeve on a pair of Bosco bars. Even with a clean, tight stem interface,
there'd be a tick tick tick as I weighted and unweighted the bars. Only
solved that one by dribbling a little blue Loctite around the sleeve's ends
and pulsing it into the gap between the sleeve and the bar with an air
compressor. Made a mess, but that bar was quiet forever after.

Re: [RBW] Causes for bike noises

2020-05-01 Thread Patrick Moore
1.Rhythmic creaking sound while standing to pedal; swore it was from the
bottom bracket. Handlebar/clamp interface. Grease fixed it.
2. Clicking sound at each pedal revolution, seated. Shoelace aiglet.
Shortening lace fixed it.
3. Front salmon Kool Stop pads squealed under hard braking when temps
dipped below 60*F. Cleaned rim, sanded pads; no solution. Changed rims (for
other reasons); fixed it.
4. Another clicking at each crank revolution. Swore it was the bb, but also
checked chain and seatpost and handlebar clamp. Continued. It was the
bearing on the right Dura Ace 7410 pedal (best pedal ever made, amen. Thank
you, Ryan.) Regreased it; fixed problem.
5. Very slight "whuff-whuff-whuff" from the front disc rotor. Removed
wheel, put it back in, tightened skewer; fixed it.
6. BB7 pads got really wet and thereafter squealed far, far louder than any
old Mafac centerpull; one feared that neighbors would call the police, and
I'm only half kidding. Got a good deal on HyRds -- same rotors -- installed
these for reasons other than the squeal, but anyway, that fixed the problem.

Envoi: Long ago I owned a 1984 VW Passat ("Quantum") wagon that, at a
certain point, in cooler weather, would honk the horn without human
intervention when turning right; startled passersby and embarrassed me.
Mere time fixed it.

[RBW] Causes for bike noises

2020-05-01 Thread Clark Fitzgerald
Sheldon Brown has a great article on Creaks, Clicks, & Clunks
.

Yesterday I fixed an annoying ticking noise that happened on most crank
rotations, but only in warm weather. The culprit turned out to be the
pedals, which I forgot to grease when I installed new pedals on new cranks.
Another bike I had (not a Rivendell) had a bad creaking noise that turned
out to be from the square taper bottom bracket that was installed at the
factory without grease.

I'm curious- what annoying noises have others fixed on their bikes? What
caused it?

[RBW] FS: Specialized Sequoia Frameset (Tall!) 66cm (c-c) - $150 plus shipping

2020-05-01 Thread David B
I very recently replaced this frameset with a Riv Roadini, so offering the
Sequoia frameset up to another tall person.
Purchased this somewhat recently to see if I 'need' a more traditional road
bike in addition to my 650b'd Riv Redwood.
And I decided I do need a more road-ish oriented bike, and jumped all in on
the Roadini.
The Sequoia fit is near identical to my Riv Redwood when it was set up in
700c configuration.

So, selling this as a frameset - though I'm open to selling other parts in
the build, I'm guessing most will want to build it up differently.

Specialized Sequoia Frameset (early 80s)
66cm seattube - measured center-center
~60cm top tube
Includes frame, fork, newer headset, seatpost, downtube cable guide clamp.

It's seen use and has paint flaking from chromed areas (fork crown) and has
some light surface rust.
Perfectly ride-able as is and indeed rides wonderfully, though if you're
looking for pristine cosmetic vintage condition, this is not it.

Photos here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_p2DHfl0cm/
And here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B_p2E5KFuWL/

$150 plus shipping - have a box ready to go. Social distance local pickup
near River Grove, IL is an option.
Contact off list if interested, or any questions/constructive comments.
If you inquire saying you want this and decide to not purchase - no biggie,
but kindly let me know.

[RBW] Hemp twine Bay Area

2020-05-01 Thread masmojo
I'll still use twine from time to time, but generally for attaching bells to my
saddle. For finishing off bar tape I like to use Hockey tape; it's super
sticky, comes in plenty of interesting designs and is only 5 bucks for a roll
that will last a pretty long time
Generally, we have some, because my son has played hockey for 10 years.

[RBW] Re: Fancy Cheviot!

2020-05-01 Thread masmojo
I've been sorta quiet on this bike; I'm taking a wait & see approach. I pretty
much had my heart set on the Anniversary Mixte and I've sorta always be
intrigued by Rivendell step throughs. When I first started lurking around here
looking to replace my XO-1 with a Rivendell, I was looking strongly at an Yves
Gomez or a Foy, but did not pull the trigger, because at the time I was opposed
to caliper brakes on a bike that took wider tires.
This bike intrigues me, because although it has a longer wheelbase it does not
appear as excessive as some of Rivendells recent offerings which kind of lost
me. In fact it looks a lot like a Mixte version of my stolen Rosco Bubbe, which
is a VERY good thing!
If they did it in the same red? Well, I'd likely be in. 

[RBW] 30 Days of Biking!

2020-05-01 Thread masmojo
Leah, I gotcha; I feel the same way most days, no matter the circumstances it's
always gratifying to humble a Fred. 

Paul, I did not know that about the nature area; I know not long ago the city
of Richardson bought the bit on the North end that butts up to Renner. I am
glad they did, maybe one less Panda Express or Academy. Dallas is getting
annoyingly big, I am pretty much a city boy, but at the same time it has to be
livable. When I moved to Dallas Central Expressway was 2 lanes each way & it
was bumper to bumper 80mph at 5PM. Then they expanded it to 4 lanes each way,
which was way too big in my opinion, but traffic was fine for 20 or so years.
Now it's back to insane & we really can't expand it anymore! On the plus side
bicycle infrastructure has increased exponentially! Yeah!

Well, I finished up with 337 miles for the month; pretty pleased with that.
Probably would have done 400, but early April was a bit rainy and we had a
couple cold snaps.

2020-05-01 Thread Nathan F
I have a 18' Hillborne running 43mm Gravel King SKs, set up tubeless on a
Velocity Quill wheelset (with SKS fenders!). Great tires, I like the ones
with a little extra puncture protection as well. They're good for
everything but mud.

You could also look at options from WTB, Bontrager (GR1/GR2 Team Issue),
Schwalbe (g-one), and Rene Herse. Surly has some cheap options but since
you spent $$$ on a Riv don't cheap out on tires like a lot of people seem
to.

I often ride along the Renner Road trail to the little forest area at Plano Rd
and Renner.
My wife tells me that land was donated by the Hunt 'oil' family.
It's a wonderful area, so glad they preserved it from development!
I was noticing the Vee tires you have on your bike. You like them?
Two of my bikes accept 700x40's.

rob markwardt, I meant to comment on what a beautiful Rivendell you have and
that's a great background you have in the pic.

I did not run them tubeless. And to be specific it was VO fenders that I
couldn’t fit with the RnR’s. And they where indeed loud on pavement.

Its true! 97% of the brevet routes are ridden in Malaysia. Yes, its very hot.

One interesting fact is that a lot of the riding is done on expressways.

[RBW] Re: Going from Sam (60cm to New Atlantis (59cm) - asking the unaskable: how will the New Atlantis feel?

2020-05-01 Thread brendonoid
I feel like I am particularly qualified to comment on this thread. I
currently own and ride regularly a 63cm MUSA homer (2011) a doubleTT 60cm
MIT Sam (2013) and a 58cm appa (2018).
Very different and very similar bikes all at the same time. The set up and
parts choice effects how 'heavy' they feel so much more than the frame.
The homer is my lightest frame > then the Sam > Appaloosa.
My Homer has always been set up with racks baskets fenders dyno full
commuter spec and has always felt 'heavier' than Sam which is just a light
gravel bike setup.
The Appaloosa (basically the same as the Atlantis as i understand it now)
is the heavier frame for sure, but has felt like a totally different bike
depending on when I've got it in full touring mode with knobbies and
fenders and full campee racks or when its in 80s mountain bike mode with
bullmoose bars.

The parts and set up are what matter. You'll be happy with the Atlantis if
you are happy with the set up. I love my Appaloosa.

[RBW] Photos of my Roadeo, set up for brevets

Nice bike Paul. I built a wheelset from Velocity rims and those Shimano 105
hubs and have been very happy with them.
