[RBW] Re: Apaloosa front derailleur clearance problem

2020-05-09 Thread Nick Payne
I can remember having that problem about 40 years ago on a tandem using
Stronglight 99 tandem cranks and a Suntour triple FD, though there the
inside of the stokers crank was actually brushing the derailleur cage in
top gear. After thinking about it for a while, I figured that my 52kg wife
and stoker wouldn't be unduly stressing her cranks, and I took a half round
file and removed about a 1mm deep curved section from the inside of the
crankarm so that it cleared the derailleur. The crank was still holding up
fine when we sold the bike about a dozen years later, and was still holding
up fine several years after that when the tandem was stolen from the
cyclist who'd bought it from us.

[RBW] Re: Apaloosa front derailleur clearance problem

2020-05-09 Thread dirtp
Thanks everyone for your assistance. I have a Schwinn Cimarron from 1986
with a triple chainring and a Shimano Deerhead front derailleur. It has a
flat exterior cage, as opposed to the new Shimano FDs, which bulge out on
the outside. It's that bulge that's catching the crank arm. The old
Deerhead just looks like a modern double derailleur to me. The inside cage
doesn't drop down very far, and there are no bulges or ramps. It works
great. Maybe I'll try a 2x derailleur, or a Campy, as they seem not to have
as many weird sculpted features.

Thanks for all the help!

[RBW] Re: bike recs for my son

2020-05-09 Thread redsf
It’s been great getting some tips and ideas on the types of frames to look
out for. We’ll definitely figure out a way to get him on a fun bike, but
Edwin’s reply reminded me of the students I teach biking to. Our program
doesn’t have much money and neither do the students, so our bikes are
always some kind of crazy. Sometimes they’ll like bikes I know are just
ridiculous. They might weigh a ton, the seat is the size of a park bench,
only three gears work. But if they’re with friends, we’re going someplace
cool, they love it.

Thanks everyone!

Re: [RBW] (maybe) WTB Brooks B68 - Question regarding brooks saddle for Joe Appaloosa

2020-05-09 Thread Joseph Tousignant
The "Aged" version of the Brooks B68 is better,BUT only after I tweeked
mine as I don't care what Brooks ads say about ANY of them being
comfortable from day one,...they were still hard. (initially! :-)

But after I did my usual "treatment" I do on ALL my saddles, it's comfy
and the wider B68 is fine on my behind! :-)

I Do like the "Aged" version because the pebbled surface soaks in the first
application of the Brooks "Proofhide" product better than the smooth
grained saddles. I know Brooks used to say Aged Saddles didn't need
Proofide, but that's BS in my experience! I do both Top and Bottom, and
THEN the real workout begins. I mount the saddle on a bike, and fold a few
layers of canvas over the top. I use a couple of the US Mint coin bags I
have laying around,...but some old jeans or similar should work as well

then I use a 2-1/2 pound leather mallet and hammer into the saddle top
about 300 times, covering as evenly as you can. I do the first hundred
strikes a bit more moderately, and the last 200 with stronger hits. The
early strikes begin to loosen the fibers and later ones add greatly to the
Comfort level. Now the saddles feel like a well "broken in" Keister
Cushion!

I've "treated" maybe 10 or 12 Brooks leather saddles this way over about
25 years, and NEVER had one tear,...or even scratch from the leather mallet
strikes,...AS LONG AS you use several layers of canvas or similar to
protect from direct contact with the leather mallet. (I seem to recall
using a rubber mallet once too a long time ago?)

I also know that Brooks or any other saddle maker would likely say you
are "abusing" their product, but as I bought it I can do what I want to to
it. My experience is it does NO harm, and only improves the riding comfort
for Immediate results.

Now nearing age 64, I don't have TIME to wait a few years for a new HARD
and uncomfortable Leather Saddle to "Break In",and when I was younger I
didn't have the Patience! :-)

Oh,...i'll say it but it should be obvious,...DON'T use a regular STEEL
Hammer to do this! It doesn't spread out the striking forces enough, and
concentrates the energy in a way that you may create dimples or other
damage to the leather. In the end you assume any risk, but my experience
over decades has shown this to be a safe procedure if done in the way I
outline.

[RBW] Sam Hillborne Fork replacement

2020-05-09 Thread Conway Bennett
What size frame? I have a Hunqapillar fork from a 58 cm frame but I moved the
canti posts for 26"/650b wheels. PM if you are interested but if not, call
Riv, check out the soma fab, or velo orange sites.

[RBW] Re: Is the Clem a Hillibike?

2020-05-09 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Length is not a limiting factor. Yes, you will need to take different lines
than on a shorter wheelbased bike, but you will be more stable doing so.
The main factor you have to adjust to as a rider in tight, obstacled turns
is plotting two lines, one for each wheel. In general, I swing
wider/smoother with my front tire and my rear tire takes a tighter,
jouncier line. Works just fine.

With abandon,
Patrick

2020-05-09 Thread David B
Thanks to everyone who's bought something and helped me clean up my garage
of lots of bike parts. Some items were in the previous list, adding here
with some price reductions on those still around.
This is round three of the garage cleanout where I'm clearing out pretty
much everything that's not installed on a bike, and digging into the parts
bin for small parts I won't be using.
I've set up these parts for sale in my webshop.
There's photos and brief descriptions in the webshop listings.
Shipping is not included, but is calculated based on size/shape and my best
guess. If I can ship it for less, I'll refund the difference, but in most
cases I'm covering part of shipping. Shipping for individual items $4-$8,
then combined for multiple items - I'll refund the difference if it's more.

Please go through the webshop to purchase - checkout process uses Paypal
for shipping - and I can easily track purchases and print shipping labels.
Contact offlist if you have a particular question about an item.

Link to everything is: https://treetop.bigcartel.com/category/bike-parts

Wow--hope you weren't on the bike when THAT happened. And if you were I
hope you're OK.

Soma sells some 1" replacement forks. Here's a link to one but you'd have
to go with canti posts and go to a threadless stem.

Did you call RBW already?

Indeed, and this is the first time I've noticed it. I don't know how Grant and
Mark Nobilette came to that decision but the 'hopping off' height of the
toptube is perfect for me. Nice work, boys! 👍

[RBW] Bike garage clean out N - . . . . A bunch

2020-05-09 Thread masmojo
Before I can even consider the new "fancy Cheviot" I gotta clear out the bike
garage. I'll be posting a few over the coming weeks. I figure I'll give my RBW
friends first shot in all bikes, before posting to Ebay or Craigslist.

First up!? A very rare Puma/Biomega collaboration.

See link for the backstory:
https://www.fastcompany.com/90185869/wanted-pumas-new-line-of-city-bikes

I originally saw one of these in the Puma store window in San Francisco & from
that point I wanted one!
These bikes are design icons & in the permanently collections of several
museums.
This is the single speed version of the Disco model.
I believe I am the third owner. The 2nd owner said he never rode it and it was
just on "display"; I did pretty much the same, riding it maybe a mile, before
hanging it up. It does have some smutz & small scratches here and there, most
from just getting "moved around"
It is mostly original; I changed the grips and the valve caps, the original
grips were generic black foam.

Bike has a cable for a down tube & folds or you can undo the cable and reattach
it to "lock" it around something without having to carry a lock with you.

Looking for $500. +shipping via bike Flights. $50 to $80 depending on how close
you are to Dallas.

Thx

[RBW] Re: SimpleOne/Quickbeam sizing question

2020-05-09 Thread Max S
Alex, did you grab that 60cm chassis+ that was listed a week ago?.. I kinda
wanted it, but looks like I may end up with a 62 instead. I’ve a 89 PBH, so am
often right on the bubble with Riv bikes. Once the 62 is here, I’ll see if I
should attempt a trade for a 60.

[RBW] Bike garage clear out #2

2020-05-09 Thread masmojo
Up for sale Surly Ogre

Really a terrific bike that I hate to let go, but too many bikes means
somethings gotta go!

Size Small, 29" wheels, 2.1" Continental tires, Mavic rims, shimano hubs,
dynamo in the front with a 40 lux light. Hydraulic disc brakes, Truvative
cranks, Microshift shifters. 3X10 Shimano Deore derailleur with Wolf Tooth San
Pan.

This is a pretty light, super capable build suitable for a rider between 5'6"
and 5'10". Great offroad, but also makes a fabulous commuter bike.
Brand new seat.

Looking for $950 +shipping via Bike Flights CONUS ( approx. $90)

size for me. Currently set up with 48cm noodle bars level to saddle (78.5 cm

When there is enough of an impact on the fork to damage it, there can be harder
to spot damage on the frame, most often where the top tube and down tubes meet
the head tube. Worth checking if you haven't already.
