Eamon, I laughed out loud when I read this. My poor Clementine...it’s hard not
to ride the newest, shiniest thing, isn’t it. If the Platypus moves more
lithely uphill, my Clem will REALLY be neglected. But I’m still loyal to it;
it’s a keeper. Raspberry Sparkle though...that’s just got a nice ring to it...🤣

Leah, that is absolutely fabulous and inspiring. I can only hope the colors
of the production models are coming in are more appealing in person

Patrick, the Redline Monocog is a great bike and I've very nearly bought
one on a couple occasions; probably would have were it not for the fact
I've got a half dozen very similar bikes already.

Great simple bikes for just getting out and exploring/ cruising.

I assume you are getting the Dick brake version?

Thanks for the reply, Nikko. Like I said I agree with the gesture but not
sure about it's efficacy. I guess I hadn't considered that the goal is not
just to get more Black people on bikes and pursuing it as a hobby/sport,
but to get them into Riv-specific brand of riding which is certainly more
niche than the sport in general, though both similarly homogeneous. I hope
that it results in a positive change.

[RBW] Re: Any particular grease cleaner you would recommend!

2020-10-01 Thread aeroperf

What Ray said - Simple Green. It works in my chain cleaner, is easily
available, and cheap.
Finish Line is another citrus based product, but pricey.

I've stayed away from Purple Power since the manufacturer says:
"Purple Power is not recommended for use when washing cars as it could
possibly destroy the clear coat surface and damage the paint."
"Do not use Purple Power on Stainless Steel or Aluminum as it could leave
white streaks or a hazy film. If accidentally used on Stainless Steel or
Aluminum and you have this residue, try buffing with a Metal Polish, such
as Wenols or Mothers Metal Polish to restore finish."
"Purple Power is not recommended for use on Chrome or Copper. Chrome can
become etched and will be permanently damaged."

Since my Sam has painted surfaces, aluminum chainrings, and some chrome
bits, I'll stick with Simple Green.

As much as I'd like to offer my perspective on all this, this topic is way
beyond the stated bounds of the group.

No, Jim cannot make exceptions as if he allows even one such discussion to
stand, inevitably the next one that comes up someone will cry foul ... "you
let such and such be discussed, why not this ?".

Re: [RBW] BRP

2020-10-01 Thread Nikko Mendoza
Hey Ray,

Cycling is a predominantly white sport. Part of Diversity and Inclusion is
creating the space and accessibility for Black Folx to enter these spaces where
they felt welcomed because the spaces didn’t seem to have representation from
people like them. Certainly, as a brown cyclist, I still don’t feel welcomed in
many of these spaces because I don’t often see brown people on these group
rides or camp outs. That’s to no fault of the individuals, but the history of
the sport.

I think of this as a way for Rivendell to more directly impact that bottom line
of diversity within the niche bicycle space that they exists in, while still
furthering their brand and business.

And yes, it gets complicated from a verification standpoint, but that’s where
Rivendell is employing the trust of their niche consumer base. The cost of a
Riv complete with a 45% discount is still more than the price of say a Surly
Straggler. Someone could still go to another bicycle company and get a bike,
but instead they’re buying into a company and niche that feels more inclusive
than the rest of the bicycle industry.

Cycling is a historically White sport. Cycling is a historically racist sport.
Therefore, I personally believe the word “reparations” to describe this effort
the sport more inclusive to Black folx is correct.

I know you’re not shooting down the idea, Ray, but I hope that I could share
some perspective!

Believing in creating inclusive spaces,
Nikko

I'm conflicted about this. Not because I don't agree with the values behind
it or the intention. I align with Grant and co. in their sensibilities, and
I love that they are prioritizing this over profits. But I guess I just
don't see this as doing the good that Grant seems to think it will. I think
donating a percentage of profits to Black organizations, perhaps especially
those interested in getting more Black folks on bicycles if that's part of
the plan, would be a better route. This all just seems too complicated with
the weird way that they are going to have to verify race and the looming
threat they could take it away at any moment with just the suspicion that
they are being taken advantage of. Also, I sort of fundamentally disagree
with their use of the term "reparations" to describe this program. I think
reparations have to be more concretely tied to history, and I don't know
that a discount on a Rivendell should qualify.

Of course, I will continue to support Riv, and I am in no way offended by
this program. I agree that if anything this deepens my appreciation for
them as a company, and I hope I'm not seen as being a detractor for this
post. Their hearts are absolutely in the right place, and I want this
initiative to have more success than I'm giving it credit for.

[RBW] Re: Any particular grease cleaner you would recommend!

2020-10-01 Thread 'Tom M' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm a big fan of the El Duke degreaser Rivendell sells. Works amazingly
well. Silca sells these gear wipes
(https://silca.cc/collections/workbench/products/hirobel-gear-wipes-canister-110-sheets)

I've taken to using on our bikes after wet rides. One towel will pretty
much clean a whole bike, though maybe not the chain or cassette. Saves the
need to use an old T-shirt and a separate degreaser.

Finish Line citrus degreaser is one of the strongest degreasers I've tried
outside of industrial degreasers. If you require its full degreasing power,
you'll find that the popular alternatives like Simple Green probably won't
work as well. In between Simple Green and Finish Line citrus degreaser are
the automotive degreasers. I find full-strength Purple Power to be
sufficiently powerful enough to easily degrease chains and chainrings. It's
also remarkably inexpensive, with gallon jugs selling for about $5 at
Walmart.

If you still want to continue with citrus degreaser, try buying in bulk
from non-bicycle sources. They're usually sold as "100% D-Limonene" for
much less than $14/20oz.

I recently had issue with a Nitto stem coupled to a Bosco bar, for me, the
bar would slip up and down. No matter how much I leaned into the stem bolts
(same Nitto set up as yours - not the nice triangular rear bolt), just
could not solve the issue, so I decided to move to the Bosco moose, problem
solved. Creaky stems are the worst, I hope you get your problem solved
without too much issue.

No, I don’t think they substituted a JIS nut for a standard M8 nut in
this particular unit. That was my first thought but my nut is close
 enough
to the “step” that it looks like the design is for the JIS 12mm.

My thought is more like #1 or #6 in Paul’s entry above, and your
 comment yesterday.
Say the hole is drilled a little off, or at a very tiny angle, or
something like that. You have to drill a hole a tiny bit oversized to
account for manufacturing tolerance of the bolts, but just a little more
and things can be off center.
There is also the fact that the step has a “draft” - it has a slight
radius, at least on mine. So the nut already may have an opportunity to
misalign a little, and a very slightly misaligned or oversized hole would
 let it spin.
Finally, Leah’s photo indicates that the bolt/nut was slightly offset
from the center of the hole.

We tend to think “It’s just a bicycle”, but it is really a collection
of precision parts clamped in loose formation.
Sometimes a part has a bad day in the manufacturing process and
sometimes the quality inspectors don’t catch that.

2020-10-01 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Platypus hasn't been released for sale, yet.

I hope Riv is sper busy with these frames and others that are coming
into their shop. Riv noted that it will no longer take frames out of the
boxes and do their usual prep... only to re-box and send it on the way to
customers. This should make it a lot easier for them, and faster for
customers to receive frames.

(Riv will still do prep if asked... charging for time as they should.)

I wanted to bump this up and let everyone know that I've not been able to

to work with anyone connect with a shop to arrange packing and shipping.
So let me know if you need any more info or have any questions. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Problems with Nitto stems and bars?

2020-10-01 Thread Ben Mihovk
I started a new thread without searching (my bad...sorry!), but Mark was so
kind as to point me to this one. I had the EXACT same noise in the same
situations as in Leah's video. The squeaky/click when pressure is applied
to the bars and when pressure is taken off. Hard to duplicate when not in
motion, but CONSTANT when in motion. Brand new Choco bars on a brand new
Tallux stem.

This thread helped tremendously...re-greasing the stem/wedge did not help.
I applied some grease to the bolt that tightens the clamp - no change. I
applied a little bit of T9 on the bar where it is clamped and the
squeak/click went away but came back after riding for about five
minutes...but nowhere near as often or loud as before. I slid out the
handlebar from the stem, wiped it down, reapplied a slightly heavier coat
of T9, re-installed bars, and turned the handlebars so that the interface
would drip onto a paper towel I left on the ground. This morning, I wiped
off excess, could not make the sound happen inside, and rode to work
without any creak/clicks/squeaks.

Fantastic! The best part is I don't need to call up Rivendell and bug them.

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus: First Look

2020-10-01 Thread Mark Roland
I think that would depend on how much your fenders wiggle. But I doubt
anyone on the list would know the answer at the moment. My guess is if it
fit 50mm (not 50c) tires with fenders, and they had tried it a few times,
it would probably say fits 50mm tires with fenders. Or 45 with, 50 and
wiggle room without (so you could probably run 48 or 50mm knobbies?

While the razzsorb is incomparable, the production colors are lovely
for this mixte bicycle. The limolive evokes one of my favorite bicycle
colors, Legnano green. As a consolation for missing out on Leah's luscious
razz, it goes well with red accents. And the blilver is really nice too,
more green than recent blues. Try it with white grips and pedals!

Which reminds me: When, I say when, is Rivendell finally going to make a
full jammies body suit (all wool
of course)?!!
Certainly excellent for campouts or lounging at your favorite coffee joint,
but these bad boys really shine when working from home! And please, please
make it available in a Blanket Sleeper style
.

Really like that custom color too!

On the site it says it fits “50c smooth tires with wiggle room”. Does anyone
know if that means 50c with fenders?
