Agree on the Tektro 720's - that's what I ran on my Hillborne for the
longest time and they are great value. Good power, nice looks - my only
complaint was their spring adjustment side to side is a bit limited, but
that's not really a big deal.

I went with the Paul Motolites and they are fantastic. But as you said, not
cheap. If I was shopping for cantilever brakes I'd look at the Tektro CR
720s. I set some up on an older Trek MTB last year and was very pleased
with performance, aesthetics, and ease of set-up. Plus they are pretty
inexpensive.

2021-02-18 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
Thanks Max!

I know, it's a bit wild that I posted it for sale. We're moving so I've
been going through an existential crisis on materialism. This is quite the
experiment on how I feel before, during and (potentially) after the sale.
It's been an interesting ride in my head these past 24hrs ;-)

I do agree it's not a small amount of money. Considering the build, I
think it's a generous price aimed at a special group of people. I'm equally
surprised it's still for sale.

(especially since Hunqs are currently unobtainium at Riv and they're
pricing for a Waterford-built Rodeo *frame* is $2,800 )

Best,

Alex

Re: [RBW] FS MUSA Hunqapillar complete 58cm

2021-02-18 Thread maxcr
Alex, what a beautiful bike and build! Definitely iconic

I have an older 58 Hunq that I love and hope I never have to sell. With my
downsizing dreams, I constantly debate about going down to one or two
bikes. I've also considered the overlap with the Atlantis and whether I
should let one of the two go, but if that were to happen, the Hunq
certainly would stay.

I'm surprised it's still up for sale, I know it's a lot of $$ but totally
worth it in my opinion.

Good luck with the sale... someone will get an awesome bike if they pull
the trigger on this.

Cheers.
Max

2021-02-18 Thread Tim Baldwin
Patrick, I've ridden both. The Jones and MAP bar sweeps are pretty similar
but the Jones needs a shorter stem. I went to the Jones for more width. I
will say the MAP is a better looking bar and I know you don't want to spoil
your beautiful Monocog with an ugly handlebar.

Re: [RBW] Custom Details

2021-02-18 Thread Patrick Moore
118 mm rear dropout OL spacing, to accommodate a 114 mm SA AM hub as well
as a Surly 120 mm hub, but I wish I'd had it spaced at 114 mm because I
just got a NOS *(NOS!!)* SA TF hub dated 1937 *(NOS!!)* from Hilary Stone
that I mean to have built into the default wheel for the new Matthews 26"
wheel road bike (the clone and improvement on the 2003 Curt Goodrich Riv
Road custom). The TF 2-speed fixed hub is the simplest of SA's hubs, with a
direct and 25% underdrive, and, so reports go, very little lash. The AM,
again, has direct, 11.15% overdrive and 86.54% underdrive: 72/65/56 gear
inches.

The frame is built with standard gauge .8/.5/.8 wall 531.

The Matthews frame has dynamo wiring inside the right fork leg running to
crown, thence under fender to arch holding Edeluxe, with tail light wire
running from Edeluxe back under fender to crown, where it pops out to run
to an internal tube in the top tube back to just under the seat cluster,
and pop out again to enter the left seatstay for a bit, and exit just above
the custom rack where it enters the central rack strut to run back to the
tail light. As an additional custom touch I have spliced the tail light
wire to power a Secula lamp clamped on the seatstay just above the wire
exit, so that the SON powers 2 taillights and the headlight.

The chainstays were measured to put the axle at the center of the custom
cut, very long, plate (= thin, to accommodate the short SA axles) dropouts
so that, with 17 t fixed cog or 19 t AM cog the wheel with Naches Pass 42
mm tires is pretty much centered under the VO hammered 50 mm fenders.

Must take a new photo

When I as 16 or so, as my second custom build, I tore apart and fully
rebuilt an ancient Varsity: took it completely apart, stripped frame, spray
painted (Flit gun, oil-based gloss enamel) black, and hand pinstriped it,
adding a hand-made headbadge cut, bent, drilled, and engraved, made from
one of my mother's brass coasters. Dog (very doggy) Latin, *Secundum
Ventus.* Replaced Alvit drivetrain with 16 and 18 cogs on AW hub and Cyclo
Benelux rd with 39 or 40 t inner ring. Whitewall tires, aluminum fenders.
They heavy 1/8" chain hit the stay over bumps, so I cut a guard from a tin
can, and bolted it silver inside outward to the stay. A rather nice looking
bike.

I know that I could get what I need with a longer (say 110 or 120 mm

 3. Brake lever question: One advantage of the Jones is that I could use
the existing levers. But for a drop bar, another question: Has anyone
experience using cable *MOUNTAIN BIKE *discs with *NON-AERO ROAD* levers?
Those in question are an old pair of mid-level Campy *non aero* levers.

 4. On One Mary? I find the present too-straight cut down mtb bar more
comfortable than the apparently similar Suly Open bar, though.

Philip,

On my upcoming dirt-drop build I already have a set of Woodchippers, but
I'd consider using these Nitto guys instead. I'll be running a Paul
adapter for a SRAM trigger shifter. The Woodchipper has a long 31.8
section so there's plenty of room to clamp the Paul shifter perch along
with other 31.8 stuff that I may include later. Will this Nitto bulge give
me similar real-estate? It looks like it may taper down from 31.8 far
sooner than the Woodchipper does.

Do you have any other comments to talk me out of using the Woodchipper
first?
