[RBW] Re: New Bike day- Red Mixte but not a Raspberry Platypus.

2021-03-04 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
Linda,
Have a look at the Platypus video posted by BlueLug. The English closed
captions are really bad but the two speakers discuss and show the bracing
of the seat tube by the top tube and the twin, continuing lateral stays. It
should contribute to that frame not feeling flexy with a load, but ...
that's my speculation only!
Here's a link to that point (about 15 minutes in):
https://youtu.be/ga8o1WKWgXs?t=894
I, too, wish the 55cm Platypus was designed for 650b wheels!

[RBW] Re: Riv-ersed Shift Levers Install

2021-03-04 Thread Joe Bernard
No mods needed with these, you just lose the index option on the
formerly-right-rear shifter that's now your left front. The nifty thing
about this setup is the normally-left-front has a nice ratcheting action
like Silvers, which is great for rear shifting. Don't forget to swap the
brake levers, too, so the jutting-out part is still opposite of the
shifters.

[RBW] Re: Convert to Tubeless?

2021-03-04 Thread Nick Payne
I'd say so-called tubeless-compatible tyres aren't necessary unless you
need to buy new tyres. For several years now I've been running Hutchinson
Confrérie des 650B tyres tubeless on one bike (Velocity A23 rims) and Grand
Bois Lierre tubeless on another (MCFK i25 hookless rims), and although
neither model of tyre is rated as tubeless, I've had zero problems.

Hi Gang,

I've got the Microshift 9speed thumb shifters on Albatross bars installed
the normal way (outside, top). I'm looking for info on setting them up on
the inside like this:

http://lovelybike.blogspot.com/2016/06/brifter-bliss-for-swept-back-handlebars.html

Is it just a matter of moving the left to the right and vise versa? I
recall some modification needing to be done to the Sunrace shift body, is
it the same with the Microshift?

These are the levers I've got:

Re: [RBW] Convert to Tubeless?

2021-03-04 Thread Victor Hanson
A couple of quid pro quos’ - from experience:

1) do not convert a tire - purchase tubeless ready or ust tires

2) fit the tire to the rim and inflate (best with a compressor. ) The tire
will only hold air a couple of hrs but more importantly now you check the
fit

3). More tape is not good - once around and overlap 75-90mm

That’s about it Keep in mind even the best mechanics get the goo all over
the place from time to time.

Re: [RBW] Convert to Tubeless?

2021-03-04 Thread rltilley
That should be all you need. I have read accounts of Gorilla tape absorbing
sealant and losing its adhesive properties so I never tried it. I just set up
some fat bike tires with Muc-Off tubeless tape but haven’t converted to
tubeless yet. I’m letting tubes seat the tape to the rim currently.

You may need a valve core wrench if you add sealant through the valve. A
sealant syringe also helps with that.

[RBW] Something similar to Rustines Constructeur Grips?

2021-03-04 Thread Benjamin Kelley
Good Day Group,
I'm building up a new bike (Raleigh Clubman with S couplers I snagged off
ebay a while back) and went to purchase some Rustines Constructeur grips,
which are my favorite, only to find that supplies of them in the US have
dried up.
Velo Orange doesn't stock any Rustines products any longer. Good thing I
bought a bunch of patches a while back.
Rustines.fr wants 45euros just for shipping. Bluelug and Harris both out
of stock.

Anyone know of any similar grips? Ribbed, soft, natural rubber.
Are the VO Kraton basket weave a similar feel? I could settle for those if
so.

Tom,

Terrifying! You’ll get your perfect Platypus and not your Fat Bike...I’ve got a
good feeling! I completely understand the wild dreams. Somewhere I know I’ve
told this story, but I used to have a recurring nightmare that my Betty Foy got
stolen. It was so unthinkable that my brain always solved the problem before I
woke up. In the dream I would be devastated and looking around for my bike, and
then - like magic - an extra Betty Foy frame in just my size (!) would appear
in the garage and the crisis would be averted. I was still sore about losing my
best gal, but I had a clone and then I would wake up.

The way this would work in real like (cuz I'm the ebike liker around here)
is I would be in the parking lot selling that e-folder out of my trunk and
Grant would be chasing me off the premises 藍

I've been riding in an old pair of running shoes for a number of years,
but the holes are getting out of hand and it's time for them to retire. I
tried a pair of fairly rigid spd shoes that I had sitting around from a

doesn't hold up when they're wet.

I'm finding that I like the additional stiffness. Trying the mushy

 bother me all those years.

So what's grippy (esp when wet), not too hot, decent in the rain, and

 Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: [RBW] Re: Albatross and Choco riders

A lot has to do with how high your bars are and what kind of riding your
doing, in my experience. The higher the bar the more likely it is to be
tilted. Tilt can really be a benefit off pavement, especially bumpy
descents.

Re: [RBW] Let's see your shop and workbench

2021-03-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I've got a 2 car garage all to myself, though the car takes up half the
space, generally. But I've been dragging my feet over workbench cleanup and
won't post photos of its current state of disarray.

Alan's closet reminds me of a neat solution I found almost 18 years ago
when I lived for 6 months in a 1 bedroom apartment. Off the kitchen was a
utility closet big enough for full size washer and dryer, which perfectly
fit my workbench with a utility shelf on one side and a pegboard above.
Open the door and you were ready to work at the bench; close it for
aesthetics.

Overhauling bikes with stand on living room carpet was another matter,
though (kitchen too small).

Re: [RBW] Re: Albatross and Choco riders

2021-03-04 Thread Patch T
Everyone's different!
I like my Albatrosses tilted downward and my saddle just above the height
of the bends.
This gives me an upright position (for me, relatively) at the ends; a
position at the bends that is very close to my drop-bar builds, good for
efforts; and every spot in-between.
I personally never enjoyed these bars at or above saddle height.
I like keep the bars free of everything but brake levers so I can use as
much of the freed up real estate as possible.

Re: [RBW] Let's see your shop and workbench

2021-03-04 Thread James Valiensi
I am lucky to have a house and a full garage shop. I used to make frames in it.
I have way too many bike tools.
But years ago I used to live in an apartment. I had fewer tools, but bikes were
simpler and less was needed. Even a Campy full tool kit was more than you
needed to maintain bicycles.
I did not have a Park type work stand. I had a stand that held the rear wheel
up by grabbing the left seat and chain stays. It's perfect for cleaning,
replacing chains, adjusting.
My apartment had a tiny balcony, just long enough for the bike and me. Thats
where I’d do the dirty work, like chain cleaning.

Remarkably, bicycles require little care. If you keep them relatively clean and
lubed, they will roll on forever. One must to remember to clean in betweem the
stem & steerer tube, where sweat drips and will eventually corrode the stem and
steerer tube together permanently.

Re: [RBW] Let's see your shop and workbench

2021-03-04 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks everyone for sharing your benches. This is really cool!

Thank you, Doug! I like to clear the bench at the end of the day, setting
things to rights is meditative. Doesn't always happen!

Eric, wow, looks like a lifetime of mechanical work and riding. It's funny
how sometimes having two of the same tool comes in handy. I really like the
custom made stem rack, that's great. And those old GP-era Bridgestone
posters are sweet. The Grainger box means you must be really serious. (I
love McMaster-Carr. Last time I ordered metric screws they arrived the next
morning.) Also dig what looks like a bench for kids.

Alan – I love the ingenuity of a hideaway bike bench. A Murphy bench? A
concertina bench? I remember listening to Car Talk on a lot of long drives
in the countryside. This was during the rerun era but before Tom Magliozzi
died. Dropping the cigar reminds me of their story about the time a *car* fell
out of their vehicle lift at the shop.

Jason, also making do in an apartment, I dig it! Looks like you've got some
nice plants and a cozy space, and I do spy your dog there! Also dig the
Kitchen Aid mixer. I recently found a fully functional one at the dump.
This about sixteen years after a friend found one on the side of the road.

Good luck with them boiling temps, Collin! That looks like a great place to
work when the weather's nice. Is that a brass Honjo fender? I love brass. I
love the way it ages. Sometimes I accelerate the aging by aerating brass
parts with white vinegar.
