Goat heads are not a major issue in Salt Lake in my experience riding along
the Wasatch front. Welcome to Utah! Fun riding, lots of climbing

[RBW] question re Brooks leather bar tape

2021-03-06 Thread Jim S.
So I splurged and bought this fancy, pricey bar tape. I'm embarrassed to
admit what I paid for it, but now I've got it. Does anyone have any
experience with it? That is, do I install it the same way I install
Newbaum's, or is there some special method for this stuff?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

[RBW] Re: Convert to Tubeless?

2021-03-06 Thread velomann
My experience is limited but so far (knock on wood) positive.
Based on that, and understanding others feel differently (sometimes
strongly) here's my recommendation.

Don't use Stans tubeless tape. It's too stiff, hard to apply just right,
and too thick.
Don't use Gorilla tape for the reasons mentioned.
Buy some of the economical and highly effective tubeless tape Analog cycles
sells. I don't know what it was originally, but the stuff works great. Use
two layers because.
https://analogcycles.com/product/analog-tubeless-tape/

I bought a Topek Tubibooster because a compressor was overkill for me, I
didn't want to have to depend on borrowing one from whoever, and I have a
friend who has been very successful with multiple tubeless set-ups using
this: https://www.amazon.com/Topeak-TubiBooster-One-Color-Size/dp/B084Z468P6

That said, I haven't had to use it. I've so far been able to set up
tubeless with just a regular Joe Blow floor pump. I credit that to using
good tubeless rims (HED Belgium, Velocity Dually) and good tubeless
compatible tires (WTB Byway, WTB Trail Boss), the Analog tape, good
tubeless valves, and liberal soapy water on the beat before pumping
vigorously. So far has worked like a charm.

We'll see if my luck continues. This week I'll be setting up some Terravail
Sparwood tires on WTB KOM i23 light rims. My next wheelset build will be
Velocity A23 rims with Panaracer Gravelking SK tires. Fingers crossed.

More tubeless info from Analog
Cycles:
https://analogcycles.com/true-facts-components/analogs-tubeless-set-up-guide/

Learning new bike skills is a good thing.

Do It & Good Luck!

[RBW] Re: Convert to Tubeless?

2021-03-06 Thread André P
Aside from what others have stated the only other piece of advice is when
installing the valve stem push really hard from the tire inside side while
you tighten down the whatever it's called, grommet? nut? spinny thing? I
had trouble getting it to seal around the valve stems on my stans
valve/cliffhanger rim combo but that did the trick.

[RBW] Re: New Bike day- Red Mixte but not a Raspberry Platypus.

2021-03-06 Thread Tom Palmer
Hi Linda,
Test completed. First with just 24lbs in rear in panniers. not bad, front
end really lightened up steering wise, which is expected. Some flex, but
not too much. Second test 34lbs rear and 10 lbs in front basket. Noticeably
more flexy, but not annoying, nor brake rub on an the few tight turns or
climbing small hill. The steering was much heavier, as expected again. I do
not have low riders on her yet, but usually I keep the rack weight very low
and heavy stuff in front panniers. I hope to get low riders in near future
to try.
I hope your search is fruitful,
Tom

Re: [RBW] Re: Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2021-03-06 Thread Den John
If you don't want to cough up for a book, I found the Barnett Manual
section on wheel building excellent. The system for spoke lacing is really
clear and
systematic. I've probably built 10 or so sets of wheels, and with the BM I
never got into trouble with lacing up. You should be able to find a pdf of
an old edition
of the BM online.

I have a cheapish truing stand and dish stick that have lasted me nearly 10
years. A worthwhile investment IMO. You can bodge along with homemade tools
but
I found as a beginner that it's less frustrating with the proper tools.

[RBW] Salt Lake City Cycling Question

2021-03-06 Thread Brady Smith
Looks like the family and I are relocating to Salt Lake City. Question for
fellow Utah listers: How big of a problem are goat heads? I was on the
verge of ordering a new dynamo wheel a few months ago but held off in case
going fully tubeless winds up making more sense. In New Jersey, where we
have glass but not thorns, I've been running Rene Herse tires in 700x44
with tubes and had no flat issues. I gather that this setup is not going to
serve me especially well out west. Do I put sealant in my tubes? Go fully
tubeless? Or would something like the Soma Shikoro be enough as long as I'm
riding mostly road/gravel?

Best,

Brady in NJ/soon to be Utah

Thanks all lots of good info here, makes sense to use the "real" tape as
the cost is not very high. As to the fitting; I've done this many times
with dirt motorcycle tires so have an idea of what I'm facing!

[RBW] Re: Convert to Tubeless?

2021-03-06 Thread eddietheflay

yes forgot soapy water and it can also help to warm up new tires in the sun
for a while. when i received my Gravel King Slicks in the mail the vendor
had squished them down to their smallest size for mailing by folding them
tightly to fit in the envelope. the folding did not wreck the beads but put
a definite kink in the bead that was harder to straighten out when
installing on the rim. the kink made it extra hard to get the air to stay
in. in the end i first installed a tube, inflated to high pressure, seated
bead on both sides, deflated, took the tube out of one side, left the other
bead seated, and proceeded, with soapy water, and co2 to get the other side
to seat. oh what fun.
