[RBW] Re: Fattest Tire on a QB?

2021-04-02 Thread 'Hudson Doerge' via RBW Owners Bunch
Ive also run BG Rock n Roads on my Simpleone with plenty of clearance.
Really the only limiting factor are my Paul mini Vs. One thing to take into
account is I believe the tire clearance gradually increased on different
batches of the QB and the SO had the most clearance yet.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

I ordered wheels with Velocity A23 rims for my Rivendell Road from Universal
Cycles. They were in stock and and my custom spec order took about a week to
lace up and ship to me.

Yeah -- if Universal has the parts you want in stock for your wheels, they
get them to you scary fast for custom wheels. The three pairs I have had
from them were all built incredibly well.

60cm still in stock. Really considering it for myself still. Just bought
deck lumber yesterday however and that cost about as much as a Platy
complete would. I've told myself if there is a 60cm come Monday, I can do
it.

Yeah. That thing. :). I called headquarters yesterday and they set me up
with a wider bottom bracket and a Deore shifter. When I got it home and
compared it to the XT I already had sitting there, they were nearly
identical. I popped on the 113 BB and shimmed up the XT. Damn thing
shifts beautifully, of course. You were right! I still want to find a
more elegant-looking derailer, but this is functionally perfect.

[RBW] Re: Clem H sizing, availability

2021-04-02 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I am another 65cm H owner... with approx 97-ish pbh, 6'5" height. My
seatpost and bar height are extended nearly the same as in Julian's pic
except I'm using a vintage B72 saddle which is not as tall has his sprung
saddle (flyer/conquest?) which likely accounts for some overall saddle
height difference I expect we'd have.

Sounds like you certainly fall between sizes of 59 and 65H... I forget the
specific min/max but recall I was right near the minimum recommended pbh
for the 65H. I almost went with a 59 with the initial Clem release (and
was really tempted when the first 59 prototype became a webspecial) but
hesitated having always been stuck with too small off the shelf bikes and
knew I wanted a more upright and comfortable sized bike for my casual local
riding (mixed pavement/gravel/multiuse trails.) I have very little
standover clearance with the 65 but once I'm in the saddle I'm perfectly
content and couldn't imagine wanting to go smaller. I've swapped from 55cm
Bosco to Jones Loop(660mm 2.5 Riser) to ChocoMoose like Julian shows and
now have a regular Bullmoose installed. However, if I did a little more
rough stuff or off-road riding I think I'd actually prefer a 59cm for
slightly easier mounting/dismounting and a more aggressive bar position
using my Jones or Bullmoose bars.

I also thought it was mentioned they'd at least never do the 65cm H again
but don't recall where/when specifically.

Best,
Brian Cole

Here's the answer to everything- search the world for one of these (the
precious, the Rosco Bubbe) and be forever
happy- https://photos.app.goo.gl/5UqTJPoisD1FiHJc9
Doesn't look as steppy throughy as the Clem L, but still gives some room,
and (risking offense to my fellow Clem 65 owners, sorry folks) rides better
than the Clems.

So I bought the frame! According to James at Rivendell, the distance b/t
the center of the front axle and the center of the canti posts on a Clem L
52 is 263mm. I measured the distance from my center front axel to the rim
and it's ~285mm. That's a difference of ~22mm or 2.2cm. So theoretically I
think the 26" wheel should work. Unless I'm missing something??? Anyway,
worst case scenario I have to buy a new 650b wheel for the front.

To my calculations you'll need to lose (not gain) 25mm of reach.
Centerpull cantilevers might get you there?

Then again, for the price of a pair of Paul's you could buy a nice set
of 650b wheel & call it done?

What a disappointment to discover the damage when you opened the
box. Did Rivendell ship your Clem? I've purchased a few frames from
 them
and the dropouts (and fork ends) were always well secured.
Good luck and please let us know how this is resolved.

Like a Clem. TIG-welded instead of lugs, it should be a really cool Platy

Yep. The mountain bikers do a thing now - which I don't really understand -
with 27.5/650B in the rear and 29 front, they call it mullet. Ideally you
should have 650B rear, too, but your Xtra cycle is 26" so..mullet it!

Well, since it's going to have an Xtracycle extension on the rear, that
rear axle measurement doesn't matter much. i just need to know whether a

the distance from the center of your front axle to the canti/V-brake
 posts,
 that would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn’t mind hearing all the details of your visit and what your plans are

2021-04-02 Thread Jared Wilson

Thank you Leah, it is indeed for my better half and she's over the moon
with it, she's so happy to join #rivsisters!

We live a little over an hour away so we try to pick up our purchases when
we can, and obviously we had to for this beauty.

It's always a treat to visit RivHQ and let the dogs get their wiggles out
after the drive, our new dog (seen peering out of the Clembasack) took a
real liking to staff member James.

I plan on putting it together Easter Sunday while she prepares dinner,
seems like a fair trade haha.

I think we've procured everything we need, hoping it goes together as
easily as my Susie did, I'll be sure to post photos once its together.

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-04-02 Thread Peter Adler
Has anyone actually tried these with non-PDW fenders?

I've had a couple of sets of fancy-pants Honjos for years, which I never
completely installed on my old Raleigh International, because the Raleigh's
chainstay bridge wasn't drilled for a mount point and I never got around to
kludging a satisfactory substitute together. Now I have a Trek 720, which
has both a drilled chainstay bridge and a seatstay bridge with a fender
mount hole - but the PDW Safety Tabs (the QRs for the rod stays for metal
fenders) are made for the 6mm stays of PDW's metal fenders, while the Honjo
standard stays are 5mm, with a 4mm lightweight option. AFAIK, most stays
for metal fenders are also 5mm, e.g. Velo Orange, Gilles Berthoud.

https://ridepdw.com/collections/fenders/products/full-metal-fenders-safety-tabs

Blue Heron Bicycles in Westbrae (Berkeley) is a PDW dealer, and the safety
tabs are only $9 list; I suppose I could experiment, as long as it's an
impulse purchase. Alternately, you could replace the Honjo/VO/GB stays with
PDW's stays, but bigger stays/eyelets (which PDW does not sell; they use a
different/cheaper mounting system) would take away much of the Honjo/VO
textured elegance.

I'm concerned that if you use an undersized stay in the QR, it either won't
grip the stay enough to stay in place to begin with, or it'll rattle. If
you build up the rail to fill the gap, will it still release from the QR
when necessary?

[RBW] Re: Wald 137 bag recommendations?

2021-04-02 Thread Patch T
Eric, I've gone through a lot since I've posted.

The Outershell bag couldn't adapt well to random large loads, I sold it.
Maybe a little too technical for my needs. Also, off-bike, it looked odd
hanging from my person. And was too similar to my rando bag, a
characteristic I thought I would enjoy more.

Riv's Shopsack gets used the most. Alas, no outer pockets, but this I
remedy with stem bags/caddies. I wish mine had an internal pocket. And a
shoulder strap, or longer handles.

I used a North St duffel; also doesn't expand, I kept running out of room.
Great for the daily commute or gym run, but without the stop at the market.

I currently have a Porcelain Rocket Meanwhile
, and love it's simplicity
and weather-proofedness, as well as it's HUGE volume potential, and ease of
cinching down. But no shoulder-capable straps, or internal/external
pockets. Small handles. So close!

If someone would buy my Porcelain Rocket bag, I would get one of these
from
Hungry. I think it's perfect for me. (I've said that before) Does someone
want to buy my Porcelain Rocket bag? It's in great condition!

I have yet to try the Sugarloaf. I worry it isn't roomy enough.

Still looking for the perfect basket bag in BK/NY,
Patch
