[RBW] Re: Quick Release Saddle for Riv

As Ray says the one Riv sells should work, but be aware it's going to
scratch the heck out of your seat lug. Personally I would just keep a hex
key handy for adjusting saddle height when needed.

[RBW] Re: Quick Release Saddle for Riv

2021-04-17 Thread Ray Varella
I’m pretty sure the quick release units Rivendell sells will work.
Try contacting them and ask. They have the bike and the quick release on
hand and they just updated their hours of service so it should be easier to
reach them by phone.

Re: [RBW] Introduction and Tire Question

Good to know about the Alex; will archive this. Rather wider and heavier
than I like, and I think I'll prefer to futz with tubeless-i-fying a
non-tubeless rim; so far, so good!

I've dealt with goathead flats for decades, and modern sealants are the
best solution by far. I've used sealant in tubes (Orange Seal, regular
formula works in tubes while the "Endurance" formula does not), and as long
as the pressure is at least 40 psi it should fix the problem. It certainly
works well at 50 or 60 psi.

But for pressures lower than about 40 psi I find sealant does not work
well in tubes; I guess there's not enough pressue to get the sealant into
the hole in the tube. But sealants work fine in tubeless tires even at 15
 or 12 psi, IME.

Tubeless tire setups require a tire with special beads for tight fit,
plus a good buildup of of Stan's No Tubes rim tape on the rim bed. This can
be done even with rims *not* designed for tubeless tires, as long as
the rim bed is built up sufficiently with the tape so that the tire beads
can fit firmly against the insides of the rim; too little tape and it is
only air pressure holding the beads in place, which can lead to problems
 great and small.

Since beads seem to stretch, and since you'll have to top up the
sealant every 3 months or so, you'll have to be ready to add another layer
of tape to regain the tight fit; then get the tight beads back in place
against the rim walls. I just bought a cheap air compressor to do so

Easier all around if you switch to tubeless compatible rims as well as
tubeless tires; but finding tubeless rims for rim brakes in the 26" size
may be hard. Perhaps others can speak up.

Upshot: try 2 fl oz of Orange Seal regular formula in your tubes. If
that doesn't work, get your rims set up for tubeless tires, and buy some
tubeless-ready tires and be prepared to adjust the setup after 3 months or
so with another layer of rim tape. I use the Rene Herse Naches Pass, 26" X
1.8". Very light and very nice rolling, but expensive.

Finally, while sealant properly used will prevent thorn flats, it may
well not seal bigger holes, so you'll need backup: spare tube or tubes if
you are using tubes; I put sealant in my spare tubes when I use them; or,
if your tires are tubeless, a plug kit, or else a tube to install for
 emergencies only.

[RBW] Re: Repaints

2021-04-17 Thread Dan Sullivan
A friend of mine got his fatbike painted by a body shop and it is really
nice. I for one will never again ship a bike to a painter; last (and only)
time I did that I sent my prized machine off and they destroyed the fork
which was a key part of what made the bike special. They did replace the
fork and it was OK but the bike was never really the same. Still great but
not the same.

 Hello,
I'm Christine from Denver, CO. I'm a mom to three cats, one dog, and
one Rivendell. The Riv is a Clem H I bought new in 2019. All the parts are
stock except the handlebars. I swapped out the Bosco's for Velo Orange
Milan bars. The Bosco bars made the bike feel too small for me (I'm 5'5"
and it's the 45 size), and the Milan bars give me a semi-upright position
that makes it feel just right. This is my "do everything bike". Shopping,
touring, gravel riding, commuting, it's the bike I prefer for most things.
I have covered up the "JR", in "Clem Smith JR" with a Clementine sticker.
This bike is most certainly not a Junior, she is a classy lady!

Early last year, I moved to Colorado. I had no idea what a goat head
was before moving here. Now unfortunately, I am well acquainted. I swapped
out the tires on all my bikes to Schwalbe Marathons to battle the buggers.
I'm still getting some flats though. Is going tubeless worth the mess and
expense? I can't use these Marathons, they are the standard wire bead
version. And has anybody tried using the stock Clem wheels set up
tubelessly? I would already need new tires,

[RBW] Sam Hillborne frame size?

2021-04-17 Thread Finnegan
How can I tell the size of the Sam Hillborne frame? I don't see any size on
the paint anywhere, the Riv website doesn't have specs for the size I'm
looking at (60cm--the largest Sam they offer in 2021, apparently). Could be
a 58 or 57 though, not sure.

I tried measuring the top tube length, but from where? Maybe the middle of
the seat tube to where the top tube connects with the head tube? Or to the
middle of the head tube too? Or just the length between the tubes? How long
should it be on the new 60cm frame?

Thanks, Riv pros.

I desire a Nitto S84 Lugged Seatpost. Does anyone have one that they might

This is my first post here, but have been lurking for several years. I have
had contact with several of you on Instagram and find the Rivendell
community helpful and friendly. In the past couple of years I have passed
up several new or used Sams, but have decided now is the right time if I
can find one. Prefer frameset, would entertain complete or partial build. I
also prefer canti or V brakes, but would consider others. Thank you for the
time.

Hi all,
Letting go of my AHH to make room for more bikes, see craigslist for
photos:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/d/san-francisco-homer-hilsen-57cm/7308421876.html

and repeating parts list for the full bike:

A. Homer Hilsen 57cm 2011 Waterford frame
Sugino XD2 Cranks, 48/36/24
9 speed Shimano XT rear derailleur, 11-32 cassette
Campy Triple front derailleur
Dura Ace 9s bar end shifters (rear shifter in indexed mode)
Velocity Synergy 700c wheels
Gravelking SK 700x38 tires
SKS P50 fenders
Shimano PD-M324 SPD pedals
Brooks B17 Special saddle
Tubus Logo Stainless Steel Rear Rack
Nitto Mark's Front Rack
Nitto Noodle 46cm handlebar
Shimano Tiagra brake handles w/interrupters
Sackville TrunkSack Small, olive

Posted for $3k, can do lower for a RBW fan that can give it a good home,
happy to hear any reasonable offers, especially for those able to do local
pickup in SF. First owner, I do love this bike but didn't use it much
around the city. I rebuilt an 80s univega with a suntour symmetric to a
similar gearing that I love for city use and ended up riding it much more
often these past 10 years, so this AHH didn't get all that much wear and
tear. Thanks!

at about 70cm you can visualize on the tape measure how much post would be
left showing on a 60cm seattube. Taking into account that the 60cm number
lands at the bottom of the lug curve and you have to allow room for the
pointy parts, my rough guess is that big Platy would work down to a 72cm
SH. Just keep in mind this leaves no room for a saddlebag, but if you can
live without that and the reach to the bars works, you're in business for
 that slammed look.

[RBW] Quick Release Saddle for Riv

2021-04-17 Thread Paul in Vermont
Hello!

Does anyone have a solution for a quick release saddle on a Rivendell Susie?

The saddle clamp is integrated with a hex bolt, but I'd like to make it QR
so the saddle can go up and down and shared with people of different
heights at my office easily.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Paul
