[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Project Mercury Astronaut Bridge Tour

2021-05-06 Thread Mike Godwin
Hi Gary.

I wish my mom were still alive, I could ask her if we stayed in the same
hotel waiting for base housing. Is the hotel still standing? Dang worth a
trip for all the sights and rides.

2021-05-06 Thread Leah Peterson
Ok, Philip that was an hour ago, so by now you’ve built it and surely must be
posing it for the photos you’re about to send us, yes? You’ll ride it to work
tomorrow, certainly.

Roberta and I were talking and she mentioned that the Bike Snob has a new
mystery bike showing up on Monday. We think it’s a Platypus.

My own Platy is in the shop getting a new Edelux light (mine was faulty) and I
won’t have it until Sunday. I’ll be delighted to look at your bikes here, if
you would kindly grace us with your photos. ♥️

I got some grey back a bike bags. The bungee is hard to do on a large
rack/wheelsize but doable on my 26 in wheel w/rack. I still had to pull
hard to cinch the buckle. It's easy to take off but harder to put on.
Bags are great. They swallow so much stuff!

2021-05-06 Thread Pam Bikes
Congrats on the bike! Great set up. You will need more gearing and a rack
someday b/c you are going to love it so much you'll want to ride it
everywhere. Rivs ride so well. Start saving up for the fenders, rack,
front derailleur and another chainring. I started out riding my Betty
about 3000 miles a year then somehow kept riding and now ride it twice as
much every year - sometimes more. I'm N+zero too. My Betty is so great!

Talking of calipers...with these types of conversions the measuring kind
are your BFF. You don't need to spend a lot of money but being able to
accurately measure spacings and widths makes all this a lot easier and math
is cheaper than buying parts that don't fit. Digitals are best as you can
switch between metric & old school with the press of a button. The set I
use are these, all of $24 worth, probably not as accurate as they could be
but we're building bikes here not centrifuges -

I gotta do that ride too. Mike, I lived in Cocoa Beach back then and my dad
ran the Starlite Motel where the Mercury astronauts stayed. He got to be
good friends with them and they would come to the house showing off their

[RBW] Re: Good rides in Ft. Worth in Mira Vista / Oakmont Park area

2021-05-06 Thread Patrick Moore
D'oh, as Homer so eloquently says. I found the route to Gateway Park via
Bellario; the turn to the Trinity Trail is by the Trinity Chapel Bible
Church. Must try this tomorrow. Again, wish I'd brought the gofast fixed
gear.

Still, observations on local riding will be not only entertained but
welcomed.

[RBW] Good rides in Ft. Worth in Mira Vista / Oakmont Park area

2021-05-06 Thread Patrick Moore
I had a good if short ride today from friend's house in the Mira Vista
development -- No a half mile to Bellario, then W to Oakmont Park, around
and about the park, and W on the river trail, which tho' pleasant has
trails to narrow, winding, and crowded for more than very slow riding, then
back to Bellario W until it looked as if it would no longer be pleasant,
then back E on Bellario to the park again, back to the River trail past the
parking lot and road to another path that petered out at an intersection,
back home, 16.5 miles.

I'd like to extend my ride tomorrow, and another cyclist I waylaid to
inquire recommended:

Gateway Park. I can't seem to get Maps to show me how to get there from
Mira Vista.

A trail South (?) off Bellario past a church with a flag (?) that "will
take you almost all the way to Ft. Worth."

I realize that these descriptions are very vague, but can anyone shed more
light on them? Again, my start will be basically Bryant Irvin and Mira
Vista.

I brought the Matthews RBFD thinking it would give me the option of some
firmer dirt, but I think a road bike might have been been the better
choice. Still, I discovered that the wonky cornering along the tight
corners of the Oakmont/Trinity River trail was due to misreading the front
tire's pressure, which was 15 psi instead of the planned 22 psi. Corrected.

Anyway, very pleasant weather, low 80s and modest humidity, and the terrain
is my favorite: rolling, some steep climbs, but none more than a mile long.
Should have brought the fixed gear. But the Matthews really does climb well
for its bulk.

Thanks for any pointers.

[RBW] Re: Which bottom bracket to get?

2021-05-06 Thread David Person
My experience was that my Hillborne came with a Tange 107mm bb and when it
went bad I replaced it with a 107mm Shimano UN300 bb, or at least tried to
replace it, but the inner chainring hit the chainstay when I installed the
crankset. So I bought a UN300 in 110mm length, thinking I would get 1.5mm
on the drive side and the chainring would clear the chainstay. Nope, had
to go with 113mm in order to get any add'l spindle on the drive side. So
for me, it wasn't so much an issue of nailing the chainline, but of getting
the chainring to not hit the chainstay.

I had to learn from trial and error what Nick pointed out above. a
107mm BB was just a bit too short on the drive side for my bike, so I
bought a 110mm only to find out the extra 3mm was on the non-drive side of
the spindle. Had to buy a 113mm, which added 3mm to the drive side
 spindle
vs the 110mm. At the time I did not have any luck finding 1.5mm BB
 spacers
to split the difference on the 110mm to make it work.

[RBW] Re: Pseudo-Rivendell Thread?

2021-05-06 Thread Matthew P
Clayton,

Kudos on the bike and post. I followed this thread but didn't participate
for years because I didn't own a Rivendell.
I think it was a combination of reading the rules multiple times and then
seeing how welcoming everyone was that I finally believed that I didn't
have to own a Rivendell to participate.
That and the fact that I started buying stuff from the forum but knew, from
the rules, that this should not be a marketplace; that is not the focus;
its a community (I hope I didn't screw that up).
Part of me wishes I had just bought a Rivendell much earlier. My parents
ingrained a strong...thriftiness (but not necessarily in all my siblings!
:-p). Humble salary, humble bike, makes sense to me. So part of me also
thinks I should just ride '80's-'90's steel/rigid StumpJumpers and the
like. Still in line with the Rivendell ethos! (I'll reference a Rivendell
Reader on that). In that sense, your pseudo Rivendell bike is not a
Rivendell (bike) but is Rivendell (in aproach).

I'm building up an Atlantis...kind of. Been lagging / work. I'll see if I
still want to ride my ~'84 StumpJumper once the Atlantis is complete!

Check out the iBoB forum: https://groups.google.com/g/internet-bob too.
Lots of overlap but also great.

Nice bike.

[RBW] Re: Converting 650b Hilsen to Rene Herse 42/26 cranks

2021-05-06 Thread ascpgh
I built my Coast rando last year with a RH 46/30 crankset. I'm above you by
four teeth on each but the diameter is close and the distance from the seat
tube is too.

I provided my mechanic some my FDs to compare with their shop stock to
find the one with best fit and function. The winner of all of these was my
old SunTour Superbe Pro. Nice flat side plates, fairly short cage and its
radius follows the big ring radius well enough.

I have had nice results with SunTour MTB FDs on lots of my bikes with
double triple and compact double cranks. A $5 favorite is the X-1. The one
on my commuter for ten years of year round glop exposure.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Project Mercury Astronaut Bridge Tour

2021-05-06 Thread Mike Godwin
I gotta do that ride. My dad was accepted into the astronaut program in
1957. I spent the first 3 years of life at Cape Canaveral and lived at air
force bases with really fast aircraft. So cool. Not bike related, but
check out this out with astronauts getting Corvettes Why America's first
astronauts all drove Corvettes (jalopnik.com)

I can't find the original article, I think it was in Smithsonian Air and
Space periodical or AOPA magazine. Here it is i think My Other Ride Is a
Spaceship | Space | Air & Space Magazine (airspacemag.com)

My dad did not make the final cut, so no Corvette.

[RBW] Re: Converting 650b Hilsen to Rene Herse 42/26 cranks

2021-05-06 Thread Gary Jacobson
Can't praise the RH double in 42/26 enough.

I have tried many FD's and like the IRD Sub C. with the 42 tooth large
chainring doubles I've used.

The other crank I like due to it being a no compromise low Q crank is the
86bcd Sugino Apex.
28 teeth is the smallest inner chainring for that spider when used as a
double. I believe I posted about the ball and cup BB works for this set up
on a 130 OLD frame.

I have used XCD cranks as a triple, but these days I'm riding doubles on
all road bikes.

[RBW] Re: Converting 650b Hilsen to Rene Herse 42/26 cranks

2021-05-06 Thread Gary Jacobson
The HHH is 135 OLD. Does it make sense to use a low Q RH double with such a
frame if one likes lower Q? Gotta think about that.

Recently I was thinking of trying a 86 BCD Apex on my Atlantis and nixed
the idea. Maybe my thinking is faulty.

[RBW] WTB: Rivendell Sackville Stickpack

2021-05-06 Thread Daniel Rooke

I posted this earlier this year but with an omission in the title that was
confusing. Thank you to those people who responded before with helpful
suggestions.

I'd like to see if anyone has one of the Sackville Stickpacks that
Rivendell made - maybe five years ago? - that they'd like to sell. I don't
have a fixed price in mind and am flexible on the condition.

are these measurements shared by other bb makers? i mean, is there a

also, isn't this a bit fussy, do a few extra mm cause real trouble? that's
an actual question.

[RBW] Portland Design Works - Wow!

2021-05-06 Thread Philip Barrett
I ordered a set of PDW Sodapop fenders last weekend and on Tuesday I got an
email apologizing for a delay in shipping (which I confess I hadn't
actually noticed) and refunding my shipping costs!

Good products AND good people. Spend your money with companies that care.

It's been nice seeing everyone get their frames, both here and on
Instagram. Lots of great builds so far and plenty of inspiration for how
I'll route the rear cantilever on mine. Seems I'm not the only one who
 wanted to use cantis!

Yesterday the front rack came in for mine... now all that's left are
the rims and frameset! Pending any further delays, I should be riding my
Platypus in about 5 weeks or so.
