2021-05-10 Thread Joe Bernard
Shoot, I forgot a detail. I believe the CX70 is a 10-speed derailer, hence
the narrowness.

[RBW] Re: Derailer for A. Homer Hilsen

2021-05-10 Thread Joe Bernard
It will fit that shim if it doesn't already have its own. Is it better than
Claris? It's prettier and lighter, but I've used both with Silver shifters
and they were great..I suspect you have a problem elsewhere causing
unsmooth shifting. Or it's a worn out Claris.

I don't remember if I shifted a triple with CX70 so can't help there, but
its narrowness might be an issue with an 8-speed chain. It means lots of
trimming to keep those cage plates away from the chain, a thing I'm very
OCD about and don't enjoy at all. If you're like me, stick with 8-speed
front derailers!

[RBW] Re: Losco vs Albatross 6mm Additional Sweep back--an additional 6cm

2021-05-10 Thread Jason Fuller
I love the look of the Losco, but it's currently homeless in my collection
simply due to none of my bikes being long enough for it! Comfy when
cruising, but as soon as I need to climb a hill or pedal harder, I am
awkwardly trying to hold the front corners. The bar I can't get out of my
mind though is the Billie; it's like both of those bars combined in a way.

[RBW] Derailer for A. Homer Hilsen

2021-05-10 Thread Doug Williams
I have a Hilsen with 28.6mm seat tube and it looks like there is already a
shim on there to mount my derailer, a clamp on Shimano Claris Triple. The
shim seems to make it about 32mm. So if I replace this derailer, would a
31.8/28.6 clamp on be correct?

I found a bottom pull Shimano CX70 in that size that looks nice. Everyone
raves about the CX70 so I wonder if it would be better than my Claris? The
Claris basically works, but it is not exactly smooth. I am currently
running the Sugino Triple Crank 46-36-24 but I might switch to the Rene
Herse 42-26 or wait for Riv's Silver Triple 44-34-24 to be back in stock.
In any event, when this set of chain rings wears out, I am done with the
Sugino hidden bolt. I just stripped the bitch and had to drill it out, so
I'm done with hidden bolts.

So...would the CX70 work with both double and triple 8 speed friction only
(Silver Bar End) shifters? Or is it only going to work with a double? Would
the CX70 be better than the Claris?

[RBW] Re: Changing up bars/luggage

2021-05-10 Thread Tom Wyland
Your "Platrack with bag" --is that a Slickersack? Man, I've had that
search term on eBay for years and have never found one. Cool!

My iterations on Albatross bike:
R-14 and Large Saddlesack on back, rando rack with smaller wald basket on
front (sometimes with shopsack)
R-14 with no bag, Ruthworks Saddle wedge, rando rack + VO rando bag on
front
Ruthworks Saddle wedge, rando rack + VO rando bag on front
Same as above with a Tubus Tara and small panniers when needed

Drop bar:
Minnehaha medium black canvas saddle bag in back

The Platypus so far has the R14 + Large Saddlesack only right now. I may
add a VO flatpack rack on the front and swap the R14 for VO Campeur on the
back (anyone selling either?)

Re: [RBW] Re: Pseudo-Rivendell Thread?

2021-05-10 Thread Bob Ehrenbeck
Jim,

The original Raleigh-branded Weinmann calipers had (just) enough reach --
at the very bottom of the slot in the brake arm, the brake shoes just made
it to the 700C rim's braking surface. It's roughly a 65-mm distance from
the brake fixing screw to where the shoes connect to the arm.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pseudo-Rivendell Thread?

2021-05-10 Thread Matthew P
I love this thread.
And I like Liam's RockCombo on the
Radavist
https://theradavist.com/2021/02/liams-specialized-rock-combo-bikepacking-rig/
But I thought it interesting and funny that they went and asked the bike
designer (or one of them), Bryant Bainbridge, and he basically trashed it!
Thoughts?
Any other particularly coveted bikes of yore, and why?
Thanks.

Replace the 11t ring with the threads and the lockring (or correct term)
that threads into it?
(& use spacers if the smallest ring is smaller than 16t per the

[RBW] Changing up bars/luggage

2021-05-10 Thread Dave
Happy spring good people,

I was cleaning out my garage and found my stash of parts/bags and thought
this group might have some great ideas to change some things around and
differentiate these bikes from one another

How do you have your Bleriot, or AHH, or Cheviot's setup?

Currently:
Cheviot - Albatross, front basket, Hub Area Rack and bags, nitto rear rack
AHH - Nitto Choco-moose, small sackville saddlebag
Protovelo/Bleriot - bullmoose-bosco, large sackville saddlebag in front,
x-small sackville in back

Not on bikes:
Platrack w/platrack bag
albastache bars
sackville toursacks
nitto f15 front rack/sackville bar sack
sackville trunksack

Would love to hear about or see your favorite setups,
Dave

[RBW] Re: Wider Noodles

2021-05-10 Thread Jason Fuller
50cm wide Noodle bars already exist, and I love mine - Simworks SoBar is
exactly that. 54cm is a considerable jump wider though! But trust me, the
50cm are pretty excellent already, and at the hoods are as wide or wider
than a lot of flared gravel bars in the 54 - 56cm range

[RBW] Re: Wider Noodles

2021-05-10 Thread Joe Shoemaker Music

Consider me jazzed. I’ve been searching far and wide (literally) for
something noodle-like but with more width. My 48cm’s are fun and all, but I
just put 55cm bars on my other bike and I’m in love. I’m still considering
a Shaka because I like the idea of the flared drops, but wider noodles
sound pretty amazing

[RBW] FS: Gus Boots Willsen - XL - Blue + tires, bars, BB, seatpost

2021-05-10 Thread Timur Mukhodinov
Hi fellow Rivendeller's,
I can't believe I'm typing this, but after over a year of anticipation,
then a near-year and less than 500 mile stint with the beautiful sumptuous
Gus, I'd like to pass it on.
Why? - I have an older Clem that gets way more miles on tours and commutes,
being a slightly better fit, and the Gus has essentially been sitting
compared to the Clem, even though it's had a few makeovers and done some
fun trips in Acadia and Adirondacks.

What's for sale?
*Gus XL Frame and fork* (includes Shimano square taper internal BB, Sunlite
aluminum seatpost, and original Technoglide headset) - *$1500 + shipping +
insurance *packed in original box.
The condition is pretty much new aside from the expected marks/chips on the
braze-ons, drop outs, and kickstand plate where the axle & bolts were
installed.
Photos of Gus in various setups here .
Serious buyers, reach out for current detailed pics of the wear.

*Other parts* available are at individually listed prices or *$300 for
everything *-
29x2.8 SE Speedster tires pair

 "near
new"- $100
29x2.6 Teravail Honcho tires pair

 "very
good" - $ 90
Rivendell Tosco bar 1-1/8 Bullmoose

"near
new"- $100
Microshift SL-T09 9spd shifters

 Front
& Rear "good" - $80

Thanks for looking!

[RBW] Wider Noodles

2021-05-10 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I noticed in Will's email update a mention of a 54cm Noodle prototype.
Well, consider me excited. I recently put Nitto/Crust Shaka bars on my
Atlantis to get something wider than a 48 Noodle and absolutely love them.
It got me thinking that it would be cool if Riv put the same effort into
perfect wider drops that they put into all the wide variations of
loscotoscochocobosco sweptback bars. Also, I recall over the years that
various threads about drops have mentioned demand for 50+ wide noodle bars.
Anyone else jazzed?
