[RBW] Re: Pseudo-Rivendell Thread?

2021-05-12 Thread Philip Barrett
That's super nice, the 650b is the way to go & thank goodness for the
Tektro R559s for making these conversions possible. My next one (after I
sell the Bridgestone single-speed MTB) will hopefully be based on a more
touring oriented frameset where I will have to reach for the measuring
calipers a little less, do some vintage cantilevers and have real mounting
points for racks & fenders.

Did anyone else lowkey expect Joe to post a photo of his secretly procured

This bike sounds like a dream to ride and also a defining moment in
Rivendell's progression. To be that comfortable, yet quick - it's my
favourite of the Riv secret sauces.

A few finishing touches today; I gave up trying to make the Tektro
FL750 levers work with V-Brakes, I know they're not supposed to but they
look so cool don't they? Had lots of braking power but hard to modulate
adjusting was non-existent. I found a cheap set of levers on Amazon that
seemed to be well reviewed, they're actually pretty nic, especially for the
 $12.99 price tag.

SKS P50 fenders went on, they're a bit of a PITA to fit to a level
worthy of a Platypus but the end result was worth the effort I think.

Aside from that it was new Shellac'd cork grips & a quick adjustment to
the real wheel bearing. The only thing left on the punch list (for now) is
to wire wheel the kick stand to silver, pure aesthetics of course! Now it
 needs to stop raining.

To my calculations you'll need to lose (not gain) 25mm of reach.
Centerpull cantilevers might get you there?

Hi Adam
Are you still making sling shots and selling security screws and bolts.
I have a pair of "barely used "Snoqualmie pass 700c tires. Black sidewall.
My priorities have changed. Flat resistant takes precident over cushy ride
I had a flat and went back to schwalbe.
This maybe more than you want to spend . You can see the fine tread like
new. They are pretty close to being a slick.
How about $60 for both plus a sling shot and free shipping depending where
you live.

[RBW] ā€œMy other car is a Rivendellā€

2021-05-12 Thread Drw
ā€œMy other car is a Rivendellā€ as seen on a license plate frame on a blue
Honda Accord in front of me on the 405 freeway in West LA today. I thought
maybe it was a different sort of Rivendell, but there was also a ā€œshare the
road stickerā€. Anybody here?

Iā€™ve only seen 2 rivs in the wild so this feels like a very rare spotting.

Thanks Joyce, I already have about 60 miles on it from last weekend.
Obviously there's some confirmation bias at play but (and apparently
BikesnobNYC agrees here) it really is an incredible ride. So smooth &
comfortable but also deceptively quick and handles beautifully.

How'd this end up for you Justin? Tempted to try a free radical on the back
of a 650b proto-bleriotwould either be running the 650b with the

[RBW] DaVinci and Andel cranks and rings

2021-05-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Garth, for alerting us to these makers. If I've heard of them I'd
forgotten about them.

Question to all: Who has used these, and what do you think of them compared
to RH, IRD, Silver, VO, and other "classic" square taper models? I think in
particular of singles and wide range doubles.

I also think of weight, looks, durability (in your experience), ring
choice, adaptability to frames with different tire widths, and ease of
finding rings and hardware; that is, among other things, BCD and supplier
availability.

Is the RH crank worth double the price of the DaVinci? (I've heard at least
a couple of owners complaining about RH cranks, so it's not as if they were
absolutely trouble free.)

Patrick Moore, who does in fact have an ancient stash of ancient Pro 5 Vis
cranks and rings.

Hi Garth,

The model number for the Claris double is FD-2400.

Thanks for the link to Andel cranks. +1 on the classic design and common
bolt pattern.

I'm in your camp when it comes to the spirit of a "good ride":-)

Philip,
Nicely done!
A real beaut of a bike!

I look forward to seeing it in person at some point.

Hopefully you, the two Jim's, Luis and I can meet up soon and share a 5 Riv
ride.

That's all the Dallas/Ft Worth Riv owners I'm aware of.

Perhaps there are others.
If so give us a shout out and join in.

Roberta and I were guessing and we thought lime Platy. But we didnā€™t think
heā€™d opt for the 60 - is he that tall? But, there IS some wiggle room here,
the PBH begins at 82 for the 55cm and Iā€™m only an 81. My bike fits like a

Now, how fast can he put a bike together? I can hardly wait to see todayā€™s

[RBW] Re: Derailer for A. Homer Hilsen

2021-05-12 Thread Garth
Doug, The most direct thing I can say is trust yourself and those initial
ideas of what works for you. A 24t ring is always gonna be 24t and a 26t a
26t, they'll never be the same ! The Riv silver crank will be here when
you need it. A more expensive crank is just more expensive and won't make
any difference in your rides. The "lighter = faster" thing just doesn't
hold up in my experience as such terms are relatives, comparisons of
comparisons with other comparisons. Is your head spinning from the round
and round like a circle of no escape ? Such are comparisons !

Another versatile crank that comes to mind is Davinci . It's offered in a
host of changeable spiders, with or w/o rings.
https://www.davincitandems.com/components/#cranks

My own bias here : I like common bolt pattern cranks, where I can use any
brand of rings.
A "good ride" is forgetting all about the story of how the present came to
be and where it's going, to not think about anything at all. Life literally
does "take care of It-Self".

2021-05-12 Thread ascpgh

I took a pass on a RockCombo in '89 to get a StumpJumper in Mark's magenta
and Di Nucci green with the acre of sticker (not decal) smoothing the
colors' junction on the top tube after seriously considering it but opting
for the more relaxed steering geo of the stalwart MTB. I had tough enough
trails that for riding them my bike needed to be less of a combo and more
of a specific tool. I guess that was an accurate decision as I broke a
chainstay on that frame which they warrantied with a dark smoky purple
Prestige StumpJumper Comp with dark red lettering. Now that was sweet. I
just couldn't swing the sticker price money for the complete bike over the
base model.

Three years later I did get a "92 Bridgestone XO-2, the purple one with the
WTB Dirt Drops as a non technical trail all-roader. A very under
appreciated yeoman all arounder that should join your list. Still in long
term loan use up the block.
