2021-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Peter: Thanks for posting this; good to know that TA is still making 50.4
bcd rings. I have a minor stash of old Pro 5 Vis arms and, while I'd
eagerly trade one for a RH crank with rings of my liking, I do find them
almost perfect for my wants (well, would happily replace the hardware with
some from VO).

I believe Velo Classique in Virginia is the US distributor for Specialites
TA. Obviously, there are also UK/European retailers that ship to the US.

The one key drawback to 5-pin TA chainrings is that the rings aren't
ramped/pinned; you're effectively capped at an 8-speed rear. But really, do
you need more than 3x8 gears?

Large selection of chainring sizes? *C'est très humoristique!*

Specialites TA (still in business; still producing 50.4mm cyclotouriste
chainrings in France, now in 7075 aluminum) make outers (attaches to
crankarm) in all even increments from 40-52T, and inners (attaches to
outers) from 26-42T.

If you wade into the used market, outers up to 56T are common; outers up to
64 are findable. Plus, odd increments are out there; I have 45T/47T/49T/51T
outers, and I'm about to put a 29T granny on a triple. They are of a softer
alloy though, if that's important.

The biggest advantage of 50.4 five-pin TA chainrings is that they'll fit on
almost any cottered or cotterless five-pin crankset made in the last 80
years (TA, Stronglight, Nervar, Sugino, SunXCD, Magistroni to name but a
few), except the ever-quixotic 50mm Zeus Competition. RH chainrings fit on
RH cranks, and nothing else.

I'm so excited by this color! I saw it in person on Tuesday and can't stop
staring at the photos I took (though I'm glad Crust posted some, because
mine are kind of awful)
I rode an employee's around Walnut Creek for 45 minutes or so and then rode
Grant's around the parking lot; both bikes couldn't have felt more
different, and the fact that they're (essentially) the same frame marked
just the versatility I'm after. Looking forward to having a Riv of my very
own!
It's also really nice to hear that a chunk of their sales will be going to
Pine Ridge. It sort of puts a finer point on "voting with your dollar"
By the way Jason, your bike almost sent me into a Bombadil quest like no
other, but have decided I want to experience this long chainstay madness.

 I

Please drop me a note if you're local and this kind of riding sounds
fun to you! Before planning a big ride, I think it's prudent to first meet
up and go for a 1-2 hour local ride, say on the American river bike trail.

[RBW] Re: 50.4 crankset opinions: VeloOrange, SUNXCD, Grand Bois

2021-06-04 Thread David Person
I went with the Rene Herse cranks when I built up my Sam due to the large
selection of chainring sized (I went with 44/28). The Sun XCD cranks
weren't around at the time, though I do run a XCD rear derailleur. The
7075 chainrings (VO and RH) may be a harder alloy than the 6066 on the XCD.

2021-06-04 Thread 'Will Horton' via RBW Owners Bunch

Looking at a fancy crankset to put on my Sam.

What are folks opinions of these models that are currently available for
purchase?

Velo Orange vs Grand Cru, vs SUNXCD vs Rene Herse Grand Bois

If you could choose between these, which would you go with? Cost is
definitely a factor obviously but its also an investment and I am looking
for what works best without being overkill. Which is the best made and has
the best finish, whose rings perform best? Best bang for the buck?

Bonus points: for the SUNXCD Clover leaf vs standard 6 arm TA rings

[RBW] Re: WTB - Platypus or Cheviot 50cm or 55cm

2021-06-04 Thread Roberta
The Platy also has longer wheelbase which help smooth the ride. To be
fair, I probably have better tires on my Platy than on the Chev I tested,
and tires make a difference in the ride quality, as I've come to appreciate
this past year. For the Cheviot, it must be a pretty nice bike, too, since
they rarely come up for resale; people who have them love them. My guess
is she'll be happy with either. But, I agree, the 50 in the Platy will be
a better fit. Good luck with finding something at Maine Bike Works or
elsewhere!

Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Appaloosa thread

2021-06-04 Thread Jason Fuller
I was a bit hasty there and neglected the other questions (well, the ones I
can answer anyway): No change to the chainstay length nor the tire
clearance, just based on comparison of new and old geometry tables. I'm
not sure on other changes; Grant said this batch has slightly longer
"bellies" to the butted tubes which make the frame a touch lighter and
livelier, but that's as compared to the last batch rather than the first
batch, so not necessarily relevant.

Current 57 is a 625 effective TT, whereas the old 58 was 615. Definitely

I don't have time to study nuances and geometries and subtle, running
design changes like I used to, but I still sort of regret not getting a
58cm double-top-tuber from the first batch. (When they were announced and
went on sale, I was precluded by the fact that I was still waiting on a

Can anyone provide a clear, accurate summary of how the details of this

I know the seat tube sizes/designations are 1cm less, but did the top tubes
or effective front-centers stay the same, or get shorter or, better yet,
get LONGER?

I know the fork blades got stiffer/thicker after the first run. Any other

Has tire clearance improved?

Have chainstays gotten longer or shorter, etc?

Thanks for any geeky analysis or datapoints.

Thanks. I tried those, and was looking for one taking clips. As things
stand, my search has eliminated this option and I am now considering either
SPD shoes designed for more walking, or the MKS Rinko pedal system.

 These are my thoughts:

I really did not like the Step-in B pedals. I am a Time ATAC lover and
that fact that the MKS used the same cleats was a huge plus. However, I
found the break-in period for the Step-in B pedals was incredibly long. I
messed with the spring tension. I was using well broken in cleats. But it
took a long, long time before the the clip-in was smooth. At the
beginning, I had to jam my foot down, forward, backward, every which way to
engage the cleat. Once that issue resolved itself over ~20 rides, they
were better. But my goal was to swap between mtb'y pedals and flat
pedals. On the trail, the engagement was no where near as nice as my Time
ATAC. So, I just gave up and sold the setup.

That said, if your goal is to ride roads and occasionally swap pedals,
its fine. Maybe not perfect, but fine. One thing you can do is find the
discontinued Non-Ezy version of the MKS Step-in B pedals for cheap on eBay
and try them out. Actually, I may have a set missing the dust cap if you
are interested (I bought them for parts).

I wish they had partnered with Time and made the basic ATAC pedal with
the MKS Ezy Superior Axle. I would have kept that setup forever.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Platypus or Cheviot 50cm or 55cm

2021-06-04 Thread exliontamer
Good to know. She has a 79pbh so the 50 seems to be the one, at least in
the Platy. She prefers the look of the Cheviot but seems to be cool with
either. I was under the impression that the Cheviot & Platypus were
essentially the same bike with a few differences(refinements?) like room
for bigger tires, canti-posts, and the curved stays which looks more
elegant to my eyes but I wouldn't imagine they rode that differently.

Have one you're not riding? Want to make money? Sell it to me! My wife
has been looking for a Cheviot specifically(50 or 55 will work) or a
Platypus(50). Frame & fork or complete bikes are cool. Thanks
