That is a fine bicycle. Toyo made and came stock with pretty much the same

Grant to replicate for that kind of money now. Mine was a smidge too big

Indeed, a fendered 650B conversion should work fine on that bike. Two
caveats: 1. Rivs already have a low BB so the smaller wheel size could be
 a
pedal-strike issue if you tend to pedal through turns. 2. Long-reach
calipers like the Tektro R559 Riv sells won't work because that frame was
already designed for mid-reach. You'll probably need a center-pull like
Paul Racers or Dia-Compes. The added fun for this plan is you'll need
 brake
hangers at the headset and seat lug (Riv sells them).

In summary: Romulus is a great lightish-loads road bike that can take
decently cushy tires, fenders and a small front rack, but you can go to a
lot of time and trouble trying to make it something it really wasn't meant
to be. There's other Rivs that might work better for what you're looking
 for. In my opinion!*

Re: [RBW] RIP Susie Longbolts

2021-08-13 Thread brendonoid
Just here to add my condolences and mourn the fact that there is one less
Susie in the world in my size.

I like to run a strap around the bike up to a roof rack when possible so if
all else fails and the rack falls off the tow hitch, the whole lot will
swing and scrape along the back of the car without hitting the ground. I
don't feel so paranoid after seeing this.

Oh, wow. Gulp. I have some questions, if the OP doesn’t mind me asking…
 1. Was there risk of the Susie to coming through the windshield of a
car behind you? I am SO glad no one was hurt. A Susie coming at you at
highway speeds could mortally wound you.

 2. What went wrong that the bike came free from the rack? There are
probably things that other people (I’m looking at me!) might learn from
this experience to avoid the same situation.

Oh, and do call Riv and see if they have a frame in the warehouse for
just such a thing. They have held frames for sentinel events in the past.

 All the best,

Nothing to add of use here except that that photo is like a still-life,
with the jug in the window and the peeling paint. Just perfect. Bike is
gorgeous too!

To be helpful to the question, just because you can squeeze a fender in a
space and the tyres dont rub doesnt meen its *safe. *Been there, ruined
nice bikes.

*others may completely disagree with me

Whoa! That's some damage. Glad no one following was involved.

I used to have one of those racks where the bike's top tube sits in rubber
trays & is retained by rubber straps with holes. After a couple of straps
broke, I started using a pair of Velcro straps on each mount plus tieing
the seat tube or down tube to the vertical tube of the rack. Even with
that, it was not confidence inspiring on the highway. Eventually I went
for one of Thule's wheel tray mount hitch racks & am much more comfortable
with that.

I always assumed that a bike falling off of a rack on the highway would survive

curved “top tube” on that frame?

I just sold my Thule rack with the rubber straps that secure the frame. Mine

[RBW] Re: RIP Susie Longbolts

2021-08-13 Thread Manuel Acosta
Hey Ben Sorry about bike stuff.
Maybe check with a frame builder and ask if you can do a custom with the
frame. Maybe cheaper than a new bike?

[RBW] Re: Front rack for Romulus?

2021-08-13 Thread Rick Urbanowski
LOL, I'm the same way.I basically do what I'm not supposed to! LOL. Yeah
the is just like a Ram but with a few minor details that were left out of
the production. Contrasting paint on the some of the mounts, possibly down
scaled components, but basically the same specs. I'll measure what i have
and see. Thanks man

So sorry this happened. I have what sounds like the same rear Thule rack,
and from now on will double up the rubber straps with voile straps AND the

Good luck with the replacement.

[RBW] Re: Front rack for Romulus?

2021-08-13 Thread Joe Bernard
Indeed, a fendered 650B conversion should work fine on that bike. Two
caveats: 1. Rivs already have a low BB so the smaller wheel size could be a
pedal-strike issue if you tend to pedal through turns. 2. Long-reach
calipers like the Tektro R559 Riv sells won't work because that frame was
already designed for mid-reach. You'll probably need a center-pull like
Paul Racers or Dia-Compes. The added fun for this plan is you'll need brake
hangers at the headset and seat lug (Riv sells them).

Dang! I'm glad you replied with that info so quick! I was just about to
attempt the install.
My long term plan is to convert this to 650B's. I think they would clear
with that, so maybe I shouldn't return these just yet. Thoughts?

Yes to both, although it can be a bit of a bodge (I did it, a Romulus
was my first Riv). Fenders are an easy fit over the stock 700 x 28 Ruffy
Tuffys, you have single eyelets front and rear for them. My Rom brochure
claims you can do it with tires as big as 35mm, but I suspect this is 2003
information when 700 x 35 Paselas were really more like 32.

The front rack is where things get sticky. I used a Mark's Rack with
the center-mount tongue behind the caliper brake* and clamps at mid-fork
for the struts. Nobody likes using those fiddly clamps but they work fine.
Alternatively you can try a long bolt and spacer at the fender eyelet on
the dropout for longer rack struts. The eyelet is behind the fork blade so
you'll need to set it up so the strut is spaced away from the blade. It's
 doable!

*If you have a canti-Rom you have options for racks that mount at the
 brake bolts.

Oh, I missed that you said 38. I don't think there's *any *chance of that
working; it's the listed max size without fenders, and I remember the

definitely not where you want your space dropping down to zero and a stick

Re: [RBW] RIP Susie Longbolts

2021-08-13 Thread Benjamin Park
Hi Leah, yes there was certainly a risk of Susie hurting someone
physically. Thankfully this did not happen and in fact I don't think anyone
even ran it over. Cars were definitely swerving though.

The bike was on a hitch rack that carries the top tube. The top tube was
held down by rubber straps with holes - look for Thule and you'll see
pictures of what I'm talking about. The straps were tight- I made double
sure of that. My mistake was not using a fail-safe strap for peace of
mind. Actually it was my friend's rack and I know he feels bad (even
though it's not his fault). I believe that the force of the air on the
highway caused the straps to just get pulled off.

Thanks for the advice, I'll plead to Will and see if they can do anything!

1. Was there risk of the Susie to coming through the windshield of a car
behind you? I am SO glad no one was hurt. A Susie coming at you at highway
speeds could mortally wound you.

2. What went wrong that the bike came free from the rack? There are

this experience to avoid the same situation.

Oh, and do call Riv and see if they have a frame in the warehouse for just

[RBW] Re: FS: Bags, racks, camping gear, brakes, handlebars

2021-08-13 Thread maxcr
Apologies Addison, but someone beat you by a few minutes. Unless the sale
doesn't happen, they're gone - I'll let you know if they become available
again.

Update on the list, plus a couple of new items:

*Bags and Racks*

Nigel Smythe Country Saddlebag, used but in good condition. I love this
bag. It’s not huge but fits a lot of stuff and has a great open/close
mechanism that works really well (better than leather strap and buckle) -
$150

Older Hub Area Rack (without hoop) plus two modified Hub Area Bags in Gray.
The bags belonged to James at Analog, the original attachment to the rack
is gone, they are used and you can tel. He added a leather strap and a
bungee loop to better attach them to the rack - $200

Saddlesack Medium (Olive), used but in good shape - $180 (spoken for)

Sackville TrunkSack Small (Olive). I might have installed it once, but
never used it - $100

Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic Panniers, Pair in (Gray) New in box - $135

Fabio's Chest XPAC (Black/gray) - Never installed - $250 (spoken for)

Nitto Campee Back Rack (I think it’s a 33R) - $185

Tubus Fly - $50

Axion front hub racks - $20

Nitto Saddlebag wire guard (new, never installed) - $45 (spoken for)

*Camping Gear:*

Hilleberg Enan (bought it used and never pitched it). It’s red and if I
remember correctly there were a few pegs missing - $500

Gransfors Bruk Mini Hatchet 410, barely used - $100

Sinewave usb charger never installed - $100 SOLD

Therm-a-rest NeoAir XLite Regular, Marigold - $100

*Parts *

Tektro brakes R559 new in box - $40 SOLD

Nitto Noodle Handlebar 46cm? H.T? - $50

Stems: I have a few stems that I need to catalogue, I'll post them here in
a bit, but let me know if you're looking for one.
Rivendell Miesha's cork grips (I bought these from Ant but never used them,
so passing along) - $30
2 unused Riv cork grips for bar end shifters, each w/ 2 coats of amber
shellac (perfectly matches a dark brown Brooks). Throwing in a third
matching cork grip (Used but in great condition, just needs some amber
shellac and you've got a perfect back up)

Kickstand - Single Leg - Pletscher, Touring (new) - $35

When I looked at 12:10 pst the only size left was 64 in both colors (don't

2021-08-13 Thread care...@hotmail.com
While not a Riv shop, Bikenetic in Falls Church is a great shop. They work
on Rivs, Crusts, etc., so there's usually fun stuff to look at. Falls
Church has the added benefit of being lousy with good coffee--Rare Bird
Roasters, Cafe Kindred, North Side Social...The Rapha shop in Georgetown is
cool--they have a good coffee bar in the shop. Man, I must want a cup of
coffee.

Enjoy your trip.

[RBW] FS: Sackville Large, Nitto Big Rack Large, Backabike Bags

2021-08-13 Thread care...@hotmail.com
Hope everyone is well.

I'd like to sell a blue Sackville bag (w/the kangaroo pocket) for $150 plus
shipping. I used it only a handful of times. I'd like $150 for the rack
(33R). The rack is also lightly used. Finally, I'm selling two khaki
colored Backabike bags--the older model which uses two Irish straps--for
$150. I bought them from another RBW member in 2019 and used them maybe
four times.

Best,

Ryan

Gearin' Up Bikes on Rhode Island Ave is a co-op with a great mission,
enthusiastic young workers/volunteers and a fun vibe. They tend to have an
interesting assortment of used bikes/parts and occasionally a good find for

[RBW] Atlantis and Sequoias for sale

2021-08-13 Thread Joe in the Pay Area
I'm the friend that Rich Lesnik has posted about a lot of bikes that need
to be "cleared out" and sold. Please respond to me off-group and I'll get
back to you as best I can.

The seapuke green Atlantis is nominally a 60cm, complete except for brakes.
I have a n-o-s 60cm Sequoia (there were no '61' cm Sequoias), a 3Rensho
frameset and 2 62cm Sequoias, one a sorta n-o-s. The second 62 Sequoia is
mostly complete but in "rough shape," nothing a good cleaning and tune-up
wouldn't solve (but if you're looking for a candidate as a museum piece,
this ain't it).

Other bikes being considered for "gone" are a DeRosa, a Masi, a '93 XO-1
and several Expeditions, mostly 60s but also a 49 and a 54. To say the
least, it's a helluva fleet. Also an '85 Trek 720 (maroon), an almost n-o-s
'85 Trek 620 ( a beautiful sparkly deep blue), and a n-o-s Miyata 1000 (the
"sort-of gray-green color, with Deerheads).

I ride a 60cm 1984 Expedition and a 1980 Trek 738, so unless noted, that's
the size they are.

[RBW] Re: Susie in a downhill bike park

2021-08-13 Thread Benjamin Park
Yes Robert I agree, the bike park is all groomed berms and jumps. Many
trails are surprisingly smooth that I could take nearly any bike down. Some
of the black diamonds were fairly rough, however, but I suspect the expert
rating was more due to the steepness than the technical nature.

While in Park City I did also take the Susie on the Wasatch Crest IMBA epic
trail, which was much more technical and quite rocky. Got mostly positive
comments by folks on this trail- many were incredulous that someone would
do "the spine" on a rigid fork bike. What a great ride that was. I got a
few "nice Rivendell!" comments too.

I agree with you Robert that the culture is very much on the "bro" side of
things, but overbiking is such a thing everywhere these days, as far as I
have seen.

[RBW] Second ride in our new locale, first ride for the Hunq

2021-08-13 Thread Ariel Jiana Fenster
Hey All,

I have been meaning to put up a post to add my picture to the #RivSisters
posts of holding up their Platys and thought that I'd also include some
pictures from our last ride! We just moved to San Luis Obispo from Santa
Cruz at the beginning of July to start a business and have been trying to
get in some rides from the shop. This was our most recent ride a couple
days ago, and the first with Jared's newly assembled Hunqapillar. What a
snazzy bike it is! I think that it and my Platypus look very unique
together, and we both enjoy them so much, both aesthetically and in their
capabilities!

I hope that you all get in some nice rides this weekend!

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Roadeo or Roadini 58 to 61 or so

2021-08-13 Thread Joe Bernard
Indeed, Riv sizing can get quite confusing because they're still labeling
them according to seattube length. In this crazy modern world of sloping
toptubes an older 54cm Atlantis fits like a newer 51cm, rendering sizing by
seattube the wrong way to go. The trick is to look - as you subsequently
did - at geometry charts and pick a frame whose reach works for you.

I'm on a downsizing mood so I'm selling a bunch of Rivy things that I hope

Tektro brakes R559 new in box - $40

That might be true. I know that there were 45 frames and there will be 99

The effective reach on my 60cm Surly CC is 60.0, the 61cm Roadini almost
the same, 5mm bigger. The CC is a smidge too long for me, the height is
good, but my T-Rex arms needed a new fork with uncut steerer tube and the
shortest highest adjustable stem I could find at the time and it was never
quite right. Interesting. The seat tube lengths seem to comparable between

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Roadeo or Roadini 58 to 61 or so

2021-08-13 Thread Yankeebird
OH I see I just went to the geometry page for the 61 and it's 62 to the top
of the tube... ok gotcha. So the 61 is a pretty decent size bike, even for
me.

2021-08-13 Thread Yankeebird
But wouldn't size wise the 61 correlate to the effective height, as opposed
to the actual height of the shorter seattube?
