Re: [RBW] Re: The Doctor Who Cycled Around the World

2021-09-12 Thread Joe Bernard
Prologue done, he's an interesting writer. There's a breeziness to his
style - a momentum - which is instantly inviting. An example, this refers
to his first bike trip with his brother in Chile:

"We chose routes with impulsive pleasure and we ate like escaped prisoners
of war. Mountains rose and fell and there was an abiding sensation of being
dwarfed by the landscape, as if we were animals filmed from above in a
wildlife documentary."

I also learned that hotchpotch is a word (or he invented it) and medical
stuff I don't understand is much more interesting than I expected. Oh,
there's stuff about riding, too šŸ˜¬

Thanks for finding this for us, Leah!

Re: [RBW] Re: Brevets on Rivs -- 2021 Dillon Beach 200k.

2021-09-12 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Good to see you Bill! It was a beautiful day and the only issue I had with
my small Roadeo is that there isn't much seat to tire clearance (compared
to my 650b). I usually ride with my Mark's wrap, but thought I might need
extra space, so I swapped bags with the Banana Sack. I thought there was
enough clearance, but things shifted in the bag a bit and with some up and
down motion, it was rubbing on my rear wheel. I ended up cinching the bag
up with an Irish Strap. Duct tape would have done the job too, but the
Irish strap is much prettier!

Bill was speeding along and I got to talk with him because he was stopped
in the road waiting for some tree trimmers to open up the lane. He might
have gotten his best time without that delay. I had my best time on a 200k
ever at 8:43. The beautiful tail wind down the Pacific Coast Highway
helped!

I think part of what Grant's getting at is that all derailer drivetrains
will be electronic in 10 years and the only mechanical ones will be
hub-gear. Or that's how I see the future so I extrapolated it from his
words.

[RBW] Re: September 10 Blahg, drive train gearing development

2021-09-12 Thread dougP
Shimano has already patented an internal gearbox system. It's quite
clever. Two cassettes with a chain connecting them & a derailer. It looks
like intended for bottom bracket mount, not hub. It would force frame
makers to design around their system. Quite Shimano.

I read about it some time ago & don't remember where. The author described
the system from what he could figure out in the patent. A google search
will probably locate it.

Yep, that's the guy. Quite an adventure. Seems odd to have worn out 5
Rohloff hubs but they were seeing a lot of abuse. Off to order the book.

Thanks for posting. I'd wondered what happened to the guy.

2021-09-12 Thread Dan McNamara
Making room in my daughterā€™s bookshelf for incoming 4th grade type books and
came across this in a copy of ā€œLittle Bearā€™s Friendā€.

I do miss that kind of interaction with Grant. Went to knot tying classes, took
my daughter to book readings, flipped Dylan records over on the turntable. And
tested out a few hatchets.

[RBW] The Doctor Who Cycled Around the World

2021-09-12 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I was listening to a podcast episode on The Moth. At the end of the show, a
bonus story was featured. It was told by Steven Fabes, an ER doc who hailed
from London, who had hatched an ill-formed plan to cycle around the world.
He quits his job, buys a shiny new bicycle, and waves goodbye to 100 of his
closest friends and family on the steps of his old hospital. He makes it as
far as his favorite pub before he realizes heā€™s made a terrible mistake.
And thatā€™s all Iā€™ll say. He was so engaging and so hilarious that I tracked
him down online and found his website. His book detailing his travels is
called Signs of Life, and you can get it on Amazon (ebook for me!).

If you have a little wanderlust yourself (me!), you love bikes (ooh, me!)
and you are interested in medicine (also me!) you might enjoy his book or
at least reading an article about his journey.

Beautiful build, and I am supremely jealous. The crew knows that if they
decide to sell the grivler 53, they've got a buyer in me. I love how low
and long it is, like a scrawny Hillibike. That would be a pretty optimal

[RBW] September 10 Blahg, drive train gearing development

2021-09-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Grant spoke of * the SRAM-SHIMANO cogs race that, you should know, is
going to culminate in an internal drive train that will be the end of the
obvious mechanical bicycle in..ten years?*

I like Grant's preference for simplicity, but I also think that there are
huge undeveloped possibilities in hub gear drivetrains that will re-connect
us with an ancient line of drivetrain development that started
commercially in the 1880s -- there were earlier experiments -- and that
Sturmey Archer continued with its dozens of models until the 1950s.

Since then, development has been aimed at the utility market, except for
Rohloff, but I think there are great possiblities for better designed and
better made hub gears with more intelligent gear spreads and greater
reliability and lower drag.

Note that IVT claims 97% efficiency for its CVT hub gear.

Patrick Moore, who expects a Sturmey Archer TC in the mail on Tuesday (2
speed fixed with direct high and 86.54% underdrive, 76" and 66"), and who
also has AMs (3 speed freewheel: 111.5% overdrive, direct, 86.54%
underdrive, 72-65-56) and a TF (2 speed fixed, direct and 75% underdrive,
72", 54").

that more or less dead-ended in the 1960s, with some exceptions like
Rohloff and Nuvinci

Having travelled the western states through wildfire and dust storms, I am back
in Texas, and this bike is ready for its new owner to come forward.

Reduction to $2000.00 and weā€™ll split actual packing and shipping.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you!

Best,

 Hello all!

Iā€™ve got my FJS up for sale. You may have seen that I bought it under the
pretense that it was a 55cm. Alas, itā€™s a 53cm. Full geometry is on the
blug/blahg/blog, but Riv advises this is for PBHs of 79.5 to 83.

Currently set up with a Sugino crank Wolftooth/Willow 40/32 (Phil BB) and
a White Industries 16t freewheel and Surly 18t fixed cog on Velocity A23
rims laced to formula (origin8) hubs. Low mileage Gravelking SS+ 35s.

Velo Orange 80mm stem, Nitto B115 45cm bars, newbaums, TRP levers with new
Ultegra cables and housing. Brakes are Tektro 556.

Nitto S83 seat post with a Brooks Pro. Pedals not included.

Chain has 20 miles on it.

This was my first time riding a long chainstay Riv. Iā€™m a fan. It feels
just as nimble on the street and trail. I believe 3 of these were made in
 this color and size.

Price is $2300 shipped obo. Photos at

Please let me know if you have any questions.

 Thank you!

[RBW] Re: FS: 26x2" Schwalbe Marathon Winter Studded Snow Tires.

2021-09-12 Thread ascpgh
Michael said in closing: "Perfect for your Trash Bike or backup 90s'
commuter."

Or as Anton of Velo Lumino has said in the
past (even perhaps another's quote), that your winter bike is your
 "sacrificial anode".
