The change in specs could be from supply chain issues. Parts for anything

Oof, the first versions were atrocious. Yes, the later/current setup is
great if you're into friction front and rear.

[RBW] Re: FS: Roadini 54 $1400

2021-09-30 Thread Jonathan D.
I might try to switch it to drops this weekend or next. I appreciate the
advice Bill. The stem is also currently to long for the Albastasche.

A couple of questions that came up:

The bike pictured currently has 38 mm Rene Here (Compass) tires. I think
it could easily fit 33s with Fenders.
My PBH is 85 and the bike fits well but on the small end for me. My 58 Ram
fits bigger.

 Good morning Tim,

The Most recent update that I recall seeing is from Aug 6th,

I’ve attached the body of the email below

Early AugustI wrote in an earlier update about how our production is
shaping up for next year and how it's looking like we're going to have a
repeat of this year with many of our frame orders placed over a year ago
getting pushed all the way to 2023.

The situation is obviously serious either way, but I have a suspicion
and hope that our people in Taiwan are doing what we* try *to do here
(it doesn't always work out) which is underpromise and overdeliver; or
maybe they're just preparing us for the absolute worst scenario and it
won't end up being that bad. I'm allowed to hope!

Here's an example of what it's like now: I placed two orders in June
each for 1200 Alex DM21 rims and they told me the current ETA for the
 first
order is July 2023, and the second order is March 202*4.* How could
that be? Do they really have that many unfufilled orders? It's hard to
 wrap
 my head around it.

If the current production schedule is accurate, we're getting less
than half of what we planned for. This means more instant frame sell-outs,
reduced dealer sales, and increased prices. The alternative is laying off
employees, reducing hours, or possibly not making it to 2023.

That all sounds bad and worrisome, but recently I stumbled across some
entries from Grant's progress reports in the early Riv Readers. The
problems then were absolutely worse; Riv was on the cusp of
 out-of-business
for years. If you feel like it, you can read through some of those in the
 early
 Readers here
 ,

but they're stressful, even 20 years later. At least now we have enough
momentum to clear the hurdles - We're not Dalilah Muhammad, but we're
 doing
 OK.

Here are some updated frame ETAs, with a major emphasis on the E. They
don't account for port strikes or congestion, Covid shut downs, or Suez
Canal type jam-ups. Also, we won't make the frames live on the site the
 day
we receive the container. If we're still working on the shipment that came
before, we'll wait awhile before making them available to buy. All these
dates below can change and sometimes drastically.

*Clem L framesets, 45 frames*: delivery is imminent, like next week.

*Homers in 47.5 and 51, 48 frames: *Shipping from Taiwan in early
September - delivery mid to late the same month.

*Clem L Completes 99 bikes: *Shipping with the small Homers above.

 *Homers in 54.5, 58, 61.5 and 64cm, 98 frames: *Shipping from Taiwan
in early October - delivery mid to late the same month.

*Gus and Susie - 130 frames: *Shipping sometime in November, arrival
early December. If they get delayed we may push them into 2022.

*Rosco Platypus: *Unknown ETA - we're still waiting on samples.

That brings us to 2022 and the only confirmed deliveries we have are:

*Atlantis - 150 frames: *Slated to ship from Taiwan in January, with
arrival late that month or early the next.

*Platypus - 226 frames: *Delivery in March.

*Sam Hillbornes - 209 frames: *Delivery in April.

The rest of our orders, most of which we placed in September 2020, have
been pushed back to 2023. We're still waiting to hear for sure what we can
get from our other frame maker - so far all they've said is that they'll
try their hardest to get us Homers in July '22, but no word yet on
Roadunos, Roadinis, and Gus-n-Susies, which they also make.

We also have a couple projects in the works, here's the scoop:

*Jim Rear Rack: *Delivery in early October.

*Slim Jim Goat Gloves: *Late this month

 *Microshift front derailers: *Late this

[RBW] Re: Show Me Your Roadeo!

2021-09-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
Drew Henson asked: "does pbh still provide the best guidance for sizing a
roadeo?"

As with most things: it depends. If by "best" you mean "quickest easiest
way to make a best guess for a rider who doesn't have a solid idea how they
want to fit on a bike", then YES, it's still the best way. If by "best"
you mean "the absolute best way to provide an optimal fit for every
possible rider" then NO, it's not the best way and never was. Riders who
report that they wish they had gone a size up are telling us they made
their best guess, and subsequently learned some more things about
themselves and refined their guess.

I'm within a few mm of your PBH (86.5) and I own a 59, and I would not
change it. In my youth I would have gone with a 57 to get the bars lower.
I would have run a ~12cm stem. I'd characterize that setup as a 'race
setup'. Now, at 52, I run the bars somewhat higher and use a 10cm
90-degree threadless stem. There's still about 5cm of drop, but I think of
it as more of a dignified road setup. I totally could rock a 61 and would
do so if I wanted to run the bars much higher, like an 'all-road' or more
of a leisurely road setup.

[RBW] Smokey Days Riding

2021-09-30 Thread Collin A
I think Patrick brought this up not too long ago, but looks like there is a
nice quantifiable map (down to zip code) about how long we have been
getting dangerous air days in the last couple of years.

https://www.capradio.org/articles/2021/09/28/dangerous-air-as-california-burns-america-breathes-toxic-smoke/

To say it mildly, its pretty depressing for everywhere except the east
coast it seems, with major jumps in smoke days (close to 200% average
increase in CA), just a part of the new normal I guess. As an example, we
had an average of 57 days where its too smokey to ride in Sacramento over
the last 5 years...that's almost 20% of the year where you really shouldn't
ride.

Collin, Its clear today at least, In Sacramento

Eric,

Congratulations on your beautiful Sam. Enjoyed your video and the views of
your shop as well.

A tip that (I believe courtesy of Sheldon Brown) makes removing a bottom
bracket much easier: if the bb spindle allows, run a wheel skewer through
the spindle and your bb tool, clamp the tool down tight and with your big
'ol wrench turn that bb loose.

Best,

That’s sad. Without Harris Cyclery, we might never have had Velouria and
the Lovely Cicycle blog, and I might not have found Rivendell (and would
still be wandering around lost in Mirkwood). I hope others will take up
where Harris Cyclery left off, for the benefit of the locals, at least.

I just happened to check into Harris Cyclery the other day to see if they
had a certain component in stock only to find this announcement:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/
Apparently they closed back in June but I had not checked the website for a
while and just discovered it.

I've purchased many bike parts as well as one complete bike from those
people over the years and they were always very friendly and knowledgable.
Further, that shop was central to the famous Sheldon Brown. Fortunately,
it looks like the website and links to all of Sheldon's articles and advice
is still up and running.

I have the 135 OLD eccentric axle conversion kit that I would sell if you
find a normal WI ENO hub instead. I converted my eccentric WI ENO to
straight axle.

FYI - Amazon says they have a 32 hole 135 ENO eccentric in stock.
