As a gray/orange Hunqapillar owner, I much prefer the darker shade of

[RBW] question and WTB for two new country builds

2021-12-01 Thread Michael Baquerizo
3rd time i'm trying this, ill skip pictures for now since they're crappy
but recently built up an appaloosa from the FFHS and a stock Clem, with a
few additions from the stock build. since this is boring without words i'll
try to add the photos in subsequent posts. now my questions:

does anyone have any rack-less recs for sackville saddle bag thats an inch
too low and touching the rear wheel? i was hoping to avoid racks on this
back entirely just because my city bike has front and rear racks, and
generally all the fixings. the bag is the slim sucker, before it was called
the slim sucker. terms out it's not slim enough and i'm the sucker.

before the most recent iteration, riv used to sell self tapping (i think)
set screws for grip kings. well it turns out grip kings aren't so grippy so
i'd like to get a set of them for both bikes. does anyone know what the
size spec is so i can not make a mistake ordering or buying them?

a double leg plestcher is rubbing against the knobs on my appaloosa tires.
any tips for making that disappear? obvious choices are to file down the
area on the kickstand, but i'm wondering if thats too obvious and a wrong
choice.

the next is maybe a WTB - my wife's clem came with what i think are pretty
terrible brake levers, I removed them and replaced them with a shimano
offering I later realized was short pull and I need long for the v-brakes
on there. i want to keep them silver and classic - most options in the well
priced range are sold out or only available in black. i'm considering going
for the IRD cafam (really i'd love to just get her paul comp but it would
be a real splurge)

same goes for the rear shifter - the trigger on that back is maybe not the
greatest for her. was thinking of just sourcing a sunrace rear 9 speed
because it matches the front derailleur already on the bike. anyone have
one lying around they decided they don't need?

thanks in advance!

Fracked out was a bad choice of words, definitely still in working order.
I'm in the same boat, got 8 speeds but no 9 speeds, but no worries, the
silver shifter's doin' just fine in the meantime.

[RBW] Re: Upcoming AAH -build

2021-12-01 Thread Ryan
I used to have Campy Super Record (80's or so?) brakes and levers on my Riv
Road. Yes, aesthetically , classic Campy is hard to beat. Yes, I first
thought the TRP RRL's were a bit over the top. But when I paired them with
the Grand Cru brakes sold by VO, functionally, they were far better than
the Campagnolo brakes they replaced. And ergonomically , the levers with
those nice roomy gum hoods are super comfortable with the nifty added bonus
of a button on the inboard side of the levers that opens the sidepulls
even more than the quick-release on the brake arms does. Nice if you run
fatter tires. Wonder how that'll work with the Paul centerpulls. I got
the drilled levers with the gum hoods; you might like the plain ones better
since they're quite understated.

Laing...you sure have an impressive fleet of Rivendells and impeccable
taste. Your pinstriped custom below is gorgeous. What is that colour?
Looks almost caramel coloured.

 My thoughts:
 - I think the Oracle might be ambitious, clearance-wise. Herse
tires run bigger than most for their printed size, and add the knobs,
 and
I'd be surprised if those fit. I'd suggest their 42mm counterpart,
Hurricane Ridge, unless they've increased clearance this round and I
 haven't realized.
 - Gearing sounds dreamy but I'd just go 11-34 for the cassette so
your Nexave is happier, and you've still got a real nice low gear.
 - If you have a line on Paul Racers, jump on it because they are
not up on the website anymore and might be tough to find. I am baffled
 that
Paul pulled them from production, of all the brake options they offer.

Good effort. I bet that was fun, digesting so much at once. My
comment is that I don't think I'd discount the original Appaloosa or
"mystery bike," which is different from the current Appaloosa. I know it
was 'sort of' a prototype, but they were produced for specific, paying
customers - exactly the way early Roads, All Rounders and Mountains were -
with no design input from the buyers and - unlike those others - they DID
have an actual model name and head badge. I don't think I'd consider them
insignificant either, as they were the experience that led to the current
long chainstay, longer top tube models and the big swept-back bars like
 the
bosco. Kind of key to understanding the whole evolution.

Wow! I could just keep staring at those bikes forever. Very interesting

[RBW] Re: Blue Lug shop tour

2021-12-01 Thread SurlyProf
I think the narrator thought Frank Jones was a framebuilder and Platypus
was a brand! Fun to revisit the place, especially when I'm not sure
they'd let us back in the country right now. Blue Lug was probably the
coolest bike shop I think I've ever been to. It was farther out than I
expected but I knew I was getting close as I emerged from my walk through
Yoyogi Park and saw a Clem H locked up outside of a cafe. Their selection
was impressive and the people were so nice. I wish I had been more
prepared with a bag plan. Will said they have their own bag shop and their
bags are really innovative and beautiful with great fabrics. I was
interested in several but couldn't be sure if they'd work for me. Probably
should have picked up one of their basket totes. They seem to have changed
it on their website and I liked the old design better (more like the one at
1:58 in the video). All I could think to buy was a t shirt and get my
photo taken in the sign. When they found out I ride a Riv, they loaded me
with cool stickers. Blue Lug Hatagaya is must see for any cyclist
(especially Riv) that goes to Tokyo. Thanks for sharing the video link.

[RBW] Re: Anyone heard the Silver rear hubs?

2021-12-01 Thread ascpgh

That's a good find.

I find aesthetic displeasure with that era of the Shimano MTB hubs.
"Parallax" was a design cue taken from the boutique part makers that were
becoming the dreams and bucket list items of cyclists instead of Shimano's
upper
end parts. Their design language took from the greater simplicity of those,
their more linear appearance and wider bearing stance. By doing so Shimano
departed from aesthetically pleasing lines like these
.

Rough example, but same design era as the grail era XTR hubs lots of rando
folks still seek.

Those black plastic cone seals of the Parallax hubs confused some folks.
They were fixed at the axle and rotate at their wide skirt interface with
an O-ring in a groove in the end of the hub body. I think it was
engineering to a design to get the wider bearing stance rather than the
best engineering providing shelter for those bearings. BITD we saw a few of
them that didn't cipher to owners who thought were broken then did it for
real, tearing up the fixture for holding the small end at the axle. If not
intact, they left the wider stance ball bearings, race, cone and grease
were pretty much out in the daylight. They were first available as the
pricey axle and hardware assembly, certainly parts that if not intact now
should give pause to any effort to build one into a wheel.
