[RBW] Dangers of riding on public roads. Was: Fly 6 Rear View Camera/Taillight

2022-01-06 Thread Patrick Moore
After looking at the videos, I have to ask: are things really that
combative out there? Or do these come from a particular milieu and
population?

It has been 12 years, but I used to commute across town 15 or 16 miles each
way on busy cross-town boulevards at rush hour, including night-time rush
hour, and while I certainly had my share of run-ins, about which I'll say
more in a bit, it never occurred to me that things were dangerous to the
point of needing legal-proof records. I generally took care of such
situations by yelling at the perpetrators, in the hope that they'd think
more carefully in the future.

Again, I insist that I am not deprecating others' fears and wishes for
camera records, or thinking that other cities are no more dangerous for
cyclists than Albuquerque. I am just curious and, more, concerned. Do
riders on this list encounter traffic dangers, in particular, hostile motor
vehicle drivers, often enough that you want to have a photo record for
possible law intervention?

In 55 years of riding in urban traffic of one sort or another*, and 33
years of riding on public roads in ABQ, NM, I've had a very few somewhat
close calls, many from my own aggression, and exactly 3** accidents that
prevented further riding, of which exactly 2 resulted in minor injurie; and
of which exactly 3 could have been avoided by thinking a bit harder.

* Starting in a moderately sized So Indian city age 11 or 12 in 1966 or
1967 when my parents let me ride my hot-rodded Hero to the local Jesuit
prep school.

** 1. Soph or jnr year in HS, 1971, coming fast downhill one morning around
righthand bend on long detour to school, lost control, went onto unpaved
verge, clamped front brake by mistake, flipped bike 180* to dash and dent
rear wheel on obstacle. I -- in Grant-approved street clothes and of course
sans helment -- was wholly uninjured. Mom picked me up.
2. Pushing pb on return of local "Tour de Dump" route in Gallup, NM, ~1994,
stupidly got front wheel into cattle grate, flipped and again broke rear
wheel and hurt myself; caused driver backup and spectacle (recall some
laughing), was picked up by pair o' WASP hillybillys from Deliverance in
primered pickup (not kidding: fleshy, jeans and t-shirts, black beards;
Hispano and even more a Native American area where hillybillys were rare,
so perhaps really angels in disguise. But they stopped to help and the
others didn't. They were taking their Harley's valves for grinding, showed
me one) for ride to hospital -- where, ironically, I was PR Director.
Bruised rib or 2, sore for fortnight, boss kidded me.
3. Commuting the 15-16 miles home summer 2006 in bike lane along Indian
School Road, stopped at Wyoming for red, pushed forward when light turned
green, kid in car at left looked left, accelerated right and knocked me
over in slow motion. Facial stitches and soreness. Bike fine.

2022-01-06 Thread Mike Godwin
Patrick

A few years ago, a few cyclists were riding up 13 from the southeast end of
Berkeley, a rider's buddy got nailed by a car, and it was hit and run. So
this time, the cops believed the riders that it was the driver's fault.
They are useful, and fun to watch downhill racers too.

[RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-06 Thread Roberta
Hi, Hugo.

I'm so glad you're enjoying the ride of your bike. Me, too! I had a stand
(no kick. you'd remove it when not in use) that attached to the rear
axle. While that worked perfect for my shorter chain stay Homer, there was
too much weight in front and Platy would get tipsy. I opted for the
standard Greenfield single leg kickstand with the foot, so it wouldn't mar
my floor. Works perfectly. <$20.

[RBW] Platypus Questions

2022-01-06 Thread Hugo Halder
Hi Everyone, I have been enjoying my 60cm Platypus since I received it in
October. On rides, I have been loving the extra long top tube, however, it
has made the bike unwieldy when it is in storage, on the repair stand or
locked up. Anyone else having these issues? Anyone have any suggestions for
1. a good kickstand, and 2. a good position on the repair stand? Thanks!

As far as kickstands are concerned, I did try the single leg kick stand
that came with my Big Dummy long tail cargo bike, however, it did not work.
The Big Dummy's extra length is in the extra long chain stay whereas the
Platypus's extra length is in every part of the geometry being stretched
out. I also purchased a Pletscher twin kickstand, however it appears that
the kickstand plate on the Platypus is built only for a single kick stand.
Has anyone had any luck getting the twin on the Platypus, or should I just
shell out and get one of the recommended kickstands from Riv? If so, does
someone recommend a specific model for the Platypus?

Thanks! - HH

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-06 Thread iamkeith
Thanks. I think I'll try it. As noted, I'm only worried about the finish
cracking if it's anything like brittle chrome. These are fillet brazed,
steel, bullmoose bosco bars. Other than being too high and too narrow, and
too straight-back at the grip, they're a perfect compliment to my fillet
brazed susie, which is why I want to make them work.

Otherwise, I agree with everyone about the custom Doom bars. I used a
different custom bar ("Arise") on my last mountain bike a few years ago,
and I now have steel bars on 5 of my most ridden bikes. I just can't see
any reason to ever use off-the-shelf, aluminum bars again. (At least not
for a big guy like me who always wants wider and stiffer, and for whom a
few grams of weight is not a big deal.) I'm gearing up to get two bars
from Doom, and ironically recommended the idea to someone on the IBOB list
just a few days ago.

FYI, my "pack them full of sand" idea came from Charlie Cunningham. That's
what he did to modify aluminum drop bars into the first dirt-drop bars,
which then inspired Grant to make the first mass-produced dirt-drop bar for
the '87 MB-1. But Charlie could re-heat-treat them after bending, so I
think it's good advice not to bend aluminum myself.

Based on a conversation with Will several months ago I know they have

Why not email or call Crust? They have always been responsive to my

be in stock.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Inventory

2022-01-06 Thread Paul Clifton
This response may sound a little harsh, but I don't mean to be harsh. It's
a frustrating situation for all these days and a bummer when it's hard to
buy things we want.
---
Along with what others are saying, it probably also has to do with what
they can get right now. They order MUSA clothing from a small shop in New
Hampshire (I think). That shop has multiple customers, and some production
capacity to balance, and who knows what the raw materials and labor
situation there is. QBP can't even keep hubs in stock. How is Riv going to
get any priority from suppliers when their order quantities are fractions
of most companies?

Combine that with increased demand - for lots of good reasons in Rivs case
- their products and brand are becoming more and more well known and
desirable - and you end up with out of stock stuff. It's a bummer, but I
don't think Riv can do too much about it - otherwise they'd be selling more
bikes and employing more people.

And when Riv does stock up on stuff (like they did for the retail store),
it ends up sitting on the shelves and putting them in a tough spot. It's a
damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, so IMO choosing "don't"
has a lot of supporting arguments.

Will's restock emails are an interesting peak into how often they get
orders from different suppliers, and stuff just doesn't seem to be rolling
in frequently or in large quantities.

paul levers because they'll likely be the last set of levers we'll ever
need. been really digging old shimano mtb stuff lately but didn't want to
hold out waiting for something in good condition.

i think i might get an r14 rack eventually, i like the ones without the
tombstone. erlen is out of the question, as is the bagman support as i
think those are better for barrel shaped bags than for the riv offerings.
heck, even a marks rack would do, but i already put one of those on my
wife's bike. probably shouldn't steal it from her just yet.

the pec deck is an idea i've considered, but no, the slim sucker does
not have any webbing on the bottom which is a bummer, but it's small so
 probably would have been overkill.

im gonna call riv tomrrow to ask about the kickstand. so far the rat
tail filing out the hole to the left seems to make the most sense, and i
get with enough torque there wouldn't be any reason for the kickstand to
move back and forth along the elongated hole. we'll see if they cosign
 this
idea or have a better one. i'm sure they've dealt w it before.

thanks everyone - better pics to come hopefully this weekend.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-06 Thread iamkeith

Well, I somehow missed this altogether. Interesting though because that's
exactly what I dream about doing to my own bosco bars every time use
them. Does anyboby know where to find reference to Ron first bending his
own? Were they aluminum or steel? Mine are steel, and I worry about the
"dull- bright" Nitto finish cracking if it's plating based. Otherwise, I'm
comfortable packing them full of sand and taking a tubing bender to them.

Gone. "Out of stock" at 0630 EST when I looked.

You can order a "notify me when restocked" alert.
