[RBW] Re: New Craigslist/others thread

2022-01-11 Thread ericf3
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3233485/

Friday Harbor, Washington, United States

$3600 USD

Rivendell 61CM A. Homer Hilsen, with premium parts. I bought this frame
some years ago (5 or 10?) on Ebay, I don't recall if it was sold as new,
but the frame looks flawless to me. Sorry, I don't know when or where it
was built, perhaps someone in the know could tell from the serial number
maybe? I measure the seat tube at 61CM ctr-top, 59CM ctr-ctr. Top tube 59CM
ctr-ctr. Standover height 86.5CM. Headtube 185MM.

I built it up several years ago with top end components, and it's been in
heated storage since (except for a short test ride). It came with the
Ultegra headset, everything other part is new (except the seatpost, and the
Crank Brothers pedals, speaking of which I will replace with some flat
pedals if you don't want them).

 I
sold it because I needed the money. I live in the SW high desert where
 snow
that stays rarely sticks around, but I did considerable shopping on it
 when
dry, and during that week or 2 in ~2010 that snow and ice stayed on the
ground, I discovered how liberating a third wheel. With a Baggins Hoss on
the back, it was the ideal grocery getter*, and with 3 wheels, when I saw
ice or snow, I sped up**. If I lived where there was snow on the streets
for more than 1 month per year, I'd buy another one.***

In the photo it has a tiny Camper Longflap, but I did use it with a
Hoss, much bigger. Even better: get a custom-made rack / basket for the
rear end. Downside: it tends to roll away from you when loading the rear
unless you set the "parking brake" by cinching a brake lever. Two front
brakes: cantis pulled by left, right pulled a ~1960s Alternburger dual
pivot. Both on front wheel. Bottle dynamo with IQ something headlight.

 * I used to wheel it through the aisles of the nearby groceries, as I
do my bikes and, nice features: didn't fall over while loading; never had
to worry about flipping down the stand or leaning it against a fragile row
of merchandise; weight didn't affect handling.

** You can also stop dead at stoplights or on hills without unclipping.

*** I'd also convert from single wheel drive to a 2-wheel Trykit drive.
This was 1-wheel drive and British, so that riding on the left, pedaling
torque would push you up against the crown of the road and away from the
kerb. In US of A, right side riding, the left drive wheel tended to push
you down the camber into the curb. But I only noticed this while standing
and honking hard up hills, and leaning to the left fixed it. Or perhaps
 our
roads are flatter than in rainier climates.

I’ve gotten questions about my no-longer Super Secret Bike, so I’ll
answer them here, and attach photos (which you may have already seen on
Analog’s Instagram or the Mermaid thread). The photos are courtesy of
Analog. I don’t yet have the bike. It was ordered in May, and only now
 have
the parts arrived to make it a whole bike.

I made the decision to make my pair of Rivendells a trio this summer. I
made a new goal to run more errands by bike. This was a challenge, because
as I’ve said before, the hills/mountains in Vegas are punishing. My
raspberry Platypus is set up with only a saddlebag support; I wanted to
keep that bike unburdened. The Clem is heavy, and putting a load and then
pedaling up the mountain was miserable. So, a 3rd bike, a mixte, with
 racks
and bags was on my wish list. A bike I could load up and lock up, and not
worry about. The Rosco Platy was rumored to be arriving in July, and I was
hoping for one of those. But news came that they would have beefy tubing
and were delayed indefinitely, so I gave up that idea.

It occurred to me I could try for another Platypus. But the presale was
long over and the new Platys were all living with their new owners. BUT, I
found one dealer who had a 55 mermaid frame sitting in the box and no one
had purchased it. I bought it had the frame sent to Analog and they did a
complete build for me in their trademark colorful style. We went with an
earthy look; greens and golds on that mermaid paint. We mixed up the brake
colors (one side bronze, one side green) and had a lot of fun with
 colorful
spoke nipples and valve stems. The lime pedals slay me. SON makes colorful
lights, so we added those as well. And best of all, I got to try Garbaruk
 -
prettier cogs and pulleys might exist but I’m doubtful. This is my first
 1x
build. The front and rear Nitto racks were saved from previous bikes and
will be installed with the lights mounted on them. I will add olive
Backabikes on the rear and a Goldilocks Fanny to the bars.

Since the bike was ordered, major life changes have occurred. We moved
to southwest Michigan last week, and the Clem would be no trouble on the
elevation here. This 2nd Platy is now probably superfluous. But, I’m still
overjoyed to have it, and like the other 2 bikes, it will get plenty of
miles. The winter has been mild so far and in between the chores of
 setting
up the new house and unpacking our things, I’ve been out on some brief
rides. People here keep telling me I need a “beater bike” for the winter,
but I just like riding my Rivendells. Should I tell them this is my beater
 bike?

A common question I get that I’ll address here: Why don’t you sell the
Clem? Or let it be the utilitarian bike?

The Clem will never be for sale. It’s hopelessly sentimental to me. I
know it’s hard to believe I’d care more about the Clem than the fancy
mermaid Platypus, but I do. That Clem is a hug. Everyone should have one.

Three Rivendells is my limit. No more bikes, ever. I’m set!

[RBW] Re: Clem L For Sale

2022-01-11 Thread Doug H.
Folks,
I updated the linked album with better photos of the Clem L. It comes just
as shown as I removed the lights and bell that I want to keep. It is in
mint condition and shipping is available. Let's say $2,200 plus shipping
OBO. I paid $2,500 as it was a Rivendell build and not stock but it is a
"used" bicycle.
Thanks,
Doug

[RBW] This bike is SO GOOD!

2022-01-11 Thread Richard Rose
Seriously! This Clem might just be perfect. I have been a cyclist (of
sorts) for more than 4 decades. This is the first bike I have owned that
does not give me some sort of hand problems, mostly numbness. If I stand
back and look at the bike it looks awkward with the high bars. People told
me "it tides like a Cadillac". I am not to familiar with those vehicles but
I liken it more to a Triumph TR3A, the classic British roadster. It has
that long front end and can be as comfortable as an easy chair. But it also
likes to be pushed hard and responds in kind. Right now there is not one
single thing I do not like about this bike. Pics from today's 20 degree but
sunny with little wind ride to follow.

[RBW] WTB albatross or similar setup

2022-01-11 Thread Esteban
Looking for an Albatross or similar bar/stem combo for an idea I’d like to
try. Well- loved/tape residue/some scuffs fine. I may just borrow from my
Quickbeam, but thought I’d try here first.

Parents/grandparents of small children: I’m posting a Bobike mini and MUSA
Burley Picolo later this week if trade is thinking.

[RBW] WTB/T Cheviot for Atlantis

2022-01-11 Thread twowheeledtexan
Hello all, I've been on the hunt for a 55 and 59 Atlantis for some time and
after barely missing the last 59 Atlantis to come up I decided to put up a
WTB. I'm looking for the most recent iteration of the Atlantis, either size
for his/hers builds, complete or frame only is fine. I have a 60cm Cheviot
in the lime olive color that doesn't really show in the attached pic that I
could offer as trade. As soon as I find an Atlantis my size the Cheviot
will be for sale here.

Thanks,
Aaron

[RBW] Re: Clem for bikepacking?

2022-01-11 Thread Liz Tilton
I certainly plan to pack my new Clem L for camping!

Long ago I spent weeks in Europe (on several different trips) on a
packed-out Motobecane Grand Touring bike with skinny little tires. I added
a temporary Blackburn rear rack, slapped some panniers on it, threw some
sort of front-bar bag on the handlebars, and despite tons of flats (we
eventually stuck to the roads rather than gravel trails), the bike did fine
and we had a blast. I’m sure it wasn’t pretty, but it was wonderful, and
now I can flip a bike over and whip out a tube change like nobody’s
business.

(I’ve traveled a number of the Adventure Cycling Association routes the
same way, too, Jeff, and it was so much fun to see how other bicyclists
handled their gear. We can complicate the most simple experiences, and I
want to be more like those easy travelers…they make me laugh)

Anything will work, if you let it. :) Have fun on your bike-camping trips.

Liz

Re: [RBW] Re: #PlatyPosing: Post your pics here! (Riv Mixtes welcome, too.)

2022-01-11 Thread 'upyou...@yahoo.com' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yay Leah,
I love the new Platy and of course the #PlatyPosing we have been waiting
for. The colors shine. I'm not that hard core either. I purchased a wool
hat with flaps from RandiJo but haven't ventured into the cold windy air
to ride yet. Catch me around March and I'll be there. Til then, I am
working out indoors and walking daily outside. Keeping up my upper body
strength for spring posing. I just received my front bag from Rons.com
and a back bag from Swift. I'll see if I can get a weight on my bike for
anyone interested. I've ridden for 30 years and never weighed my bikes. I
never thought it mattered. I also didn't know better. Maybe ignorance is
bliss. I rode a hybrid bike with generic tires across Iowa and thought it
was the most fun thing ever. Someone on the ride commented on my big tires
at the time and I shook my head and probably said something dumb. I am
seriously the 'just ride' person out there who gets on a bike and rides.
But now I'm curious. Since I do lift weights. My husband lifted the bike
and put in on the Yakima racks on top of his car. He did it with ease. I
have a hitch rack on the back of my Subaru that makes it a bit easier to
get a bike on.
Stay tuned.

[RBW] Re: Clem for bikepacking?

2022-01-11 Thread John G
Most of those are not new in the scheme of things at all. They've just
been rediscovered and possibly updated. I may be geezing here, but I had
an AMF (I think) frame bag of orange nylon back in 1970s. I wish I still
had it. I still have the Cannondale handlebar bag from the same era. The
freedom to explore the world (well, at least a good chunk of mid-Maryland)
a couple of bags and a wonderlight (
https://cdn-0.sheldonbrown.com/images/wonder-lamp.jpg) gave teenaged me is
a cherished memory.

As to the original post, bikepacking is worth it even on a less than
perfect bikepacking bike. Underbikepacking, as it were.

I've had the Pletscher double-legged kickstand on my 60cm Platy since day 1
and it's been great at keeping the bike stable; would definitely recommend
it.

I don't mind a heavy-ish bike (I do own Rivendells, after all), but it
can be too heavy for me to lift onto a bike rack or over a log. I never
weighed my Platy, but I built it up with lightish parts--Brevet rims, some
kind of Gravel King tires run tubeless, 1x with Garbaruk cassette (they
remove unneeded metal), SKS fenders and lighter Axiom rack. One light
nylon bag. I did spend "poundage" by installing a Brooks B68 and
Greenfield kickstand. I can lift it, but it is heavier than my more bare
 AHomerHilsen.

The *ride*, though, is light--light and breezy. My old "lightened up"
Appaloosa probably weighed about the same, and it rode great, but not the
light and breezy ride of the Platy.

If you're ever on the eastern side of the state, I'm in Philadelphia
and wouldn't mind letting your wife test my 55cm Platy.
