Re: [RBW] Re: RBW small bits trading post

2022-01-22 Thread mbaquerizo
yep, not asking for places to buy the stuff. if I don't find it through this
thread I know where to get it.

just trying to create a means of helping ppl with get things they need and get
rid of things they don't.

to be clear, despite my title, I'm not asking for a trade. if anyone needs the
things I've posted, I'm happy to send them out, no strings.

[RBW] Re: ISO Brooklyn Riv Bike 'Gang'

2022-01-22 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Cold rubber is fast rubber, let's shred! (says the guy with two kids and a
job that burns the present daylight hours away)
I'd like to do a ride that started with a ferry across the river to Jersey
City, winding our way up to the George Washington bridge. From there we
could head north over the Hudson bridge to the Bronx, then weave our way
down the Harlem River and East river, crossing every bridge we can. Every
crossing possible might be fun? Or something less ridiculous would be fine,
if you're into that sort of thing...

The best way to get the Nitto struts and rack bolts is to order from Blue
Lug. They'll get to you in just a few days. Their prices on the hardware
are the lowest around but you gotta eat the shipping.

[RBW] Swift Industries moving stock production to Asia

2022-01-22 Thread Eric Marth
I understand running a boutique bag business must be tough but kinda bummed
to learn that "Beginning in March of 2022, a portion of our stock
collection will be made in Indonesia, built from materials produced
throughout Asia."

I dig the freaky small makers working in the USA: Paul, Phil, Sackville,
White Industries, etc.

[RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho Bars in stock at Crust

2022-01-22 Thread Eric Marth
For anyone who missed it, Ron's email update included a bit on the
availability, quick sale and re-stock of the back bars:

   -

That brings me to the mild outcry over the rapid sell through of Uncle
Ron’s Orthopedic Back bar. There is a narrative swirling around the
internet that we do this sorta thing on purpose —- if we were only that
smart. This is a short story about a small business with medium
   popularity.

I generally prototype new products in my barn. In the case of these
handlebars, i used a nitto bosco as a blank and bent them to where i liked
it best. I call up Matt from Crust and convince him to make them — where
he generally trusts me with baked in reluctance. Adam Sklar digitally
draws them up for me —- and its off to the best handlebar factory in Taiwan
who also happen to make Renthal’s motocross bars. So these handlebars are
gonna take a while to make. In normal times, 3-6 months is normal …. as
things sit now, you are lucky to have a turn around under 18 months.

So there you are with a high performance geriatric handlebar design
wondering how many you should order based on what kind of demand there will
be in 18 months… will we even be here??? Fuck! Okay, 90 sounds about right.
90 it was. 90 gone in an afternoon. More than 90 on order now…. you
guessed it …. 18 months away. Hope you still want them!

Re: [RBW] Best grocery pannier? Nice lightweight wool cycling "jacket" or full-zip mid-weight jersey?

2022-01-22 Thread Patrick Moore
Joyce and Turnip: Thank you. Joyce, I see that the Seattle CL offer is red,
at least, as far as I can judge from my monitor and with my
color-vision-deprived eyes. If I were closer I might well grasp. Too bad
I', 1,500 miles away.

In fact. I'm not in the market just now, but I may well be in the market in
a few months, and this Ortlieb shopping-specific design is the best I've
looked at; and apparently it comes in red, which I favor for the
Rivendel-esque* Sage Green frame it would be used on.

*The bike is the Matthews 2:1, but it's a Riv clone+ which also copies
pretty closely with its powdercoat the wonderful Sage Green (with
lovely Cream Accents) Joe Bell paint of the 2003 exemplar. The Sage Green
color is (*I* think) very well set off by red accents in bar tape and
panniers.

+ Copied angles and lengths, and the powdercoat is very similar tho'
without the cream accents; but saved from plagiarism and (one hopes)
obloquy because standard gauge / thinnish-wall 531, and narrow 118 mm OL to
accommodate both 114 and 120 OL hubs -- SA hub gear and fixed gear drive
wheels -- plus various odd housing stops for the SA shifter bits, and
oddball internal dyno-wire routing, weird custom rack attachments, etc etc.

I want something with a flap and something that can be adapted to an
Ortlieb or Arkle-type "clamp" mounting system and be offset to the rear by
about 3". I've owned at least 2 different grocery panniers of this design,
and they work well on smooth unobstructed routes, but I've lost one such
similar pannier when riding on a dirt road; either fell off on a bump, or
perhaps was scraped off when I went through some path entry barriers.
(Fortunately I had nothing particularly valuable in the pannier at the
 time.)

[RBW] RBW small bits trading post

2022-01-22 Thread Michael Baquerizo
feel free to delete if this is not allowed, for whatever reason.

i and i'm sure we all, have collected bits and bobs throughout the years,
items (smaller: think struts and bolts, etc) especially when it comes to
nitto, I find that replacements cost an crazy percentage of a whole
product.

anyway the idea is a pay it forward sort of post. have something sitting?
post it. need something? ask for it.

the reason i see smaller parts making more sense is because shipping
charges are often negligible. once you start shipping the bigger bits it
becomes a bit more of a financial obligation. that being said I don't
really see a reason to impose any real rules.

i can start.

i have :

https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-band-clamps-pair?variant=23336804097

these by the pair in all sizes Riv is selling here.

i've also got two different sets of struts I don't need. one set of
shorties that are bent
ala
https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-rack-hardware-15cm-bent-struts-pair-20025?pr_prod_strat=description&pr_rec_pid=7406009729&pr_ref_pid=7406009345&pr_seq=uniform

albeit much smaller. i can measure when i have access to them in a week or
two. they came to me on a rear bag support rack (r14) to get the rack close
to the

i need:

https://www.rivbike.com/products/nitto-rack-hardware-rack-nut-bolt-each-20184?_pos=3&_sid=fbd6bb55e&_ss=r

*x 3* and more specifically just 2 and 1 washer that has the concave
indents. i lost it in the process of installation.

i also need:

https://www.benscycle.com/nitto-alloy-struts-mounting-stays---pair-bicycle_mounted_rack_part_nitto_nittorackstays_870/p?skuId=2290

in the 350mm size.

TBC - i'm sure i got a bunch more smaller bits i'd be happy to send to
whoever might need.

pay it forward.

making a decision based only on aesthetics seems counter to how

Re: [RBW] New Roadinis will have clearance for 42 mm tires

2022-01-22 Thread Johnny Alien
Honestly with the less swoopy top tube and sidepulls there isn't as much
different than the current Roadini beyond a longer wheelbase. And if the
point is to have albastache or drops then I would think the Roadini would
be a touch better. I am sure the new Gallop will be good and people will
buy it but I agree with @iamkeith that the previous design was the perfect
Riv styled road bike. Hopefully someone here got one of them. They did

[RBW] FS: Bar Tape, Leather Cinelli Lizard-Skins Fizik Specialized more [long]

2022-01-22 Thread David Hallerman
Hello! I’ve arranged today’s sale of handlebar tapes by color. Actually,
I’m surprised that I’ve not seen an online bike retailer present bar
tape that same way, since if you want RED bar tape, then yellow tape
from a company whose tape you like still ain’t gonna help you. But
leather tapes are listed first, separate from the chromatic arrangement.

That said, have fun. Isn’t bar tape the most fun part of bike stuff? All
those colors and textures! I’ve listed 40 pairs of different bar tapes
in 10 different shades. All new, although some pairs are a bit older.
Prices include shipping, photos available on request, and your questions
quickly answered.

Dave, who notes that when a bar tape package lists a more descriptive
term for its color such as “tangerine orange” it’s listed that way below

_*LEATHER*_
Brooks Leather, antique brown = $45
Velo Orange Grand Cru Leather, espresso (brown) = $60
Walnut Studio Coil Leather Bar Wraps, dark brown = $75
Walnut Studio Coil Leather Bar Wraps, honey = $75
Brooks Leather, raspberry (rare!) = $95

_*BROWN/TAN*_
Serfas Cork, tan = $14
Cinelli Cork, tan = $17

_*RED*_
Profile Design Cork, red = $11
Deda Elementi Logo Tape, dark red = $12
Cinelli Cork Gel, red = $17
Planet Bike Gel, red = $17
Bontrager Gel, viper red = $17
Lizard Skins DSP 1.8mm, red = $27
Lizard Skins DSP 3.2mm, crimson red = $34

_*GREEN*_
Deda Elementi Logo Tape, jaguar green = $11
Deda Elementi Logo Tape, dark green = $11
Soma Thick & Zesty, jade green = $15
Soma Thick & Zesty, kelly green (2 available) = $15 ea.
Planet Bike Gel, celeste green = $17
Specialized S-Wrap Roubaix, teal = $23

_*BLUE*_
Deda Elementi Logo Tape, light navy = $11
Bontrager Cork, blue = $17
Bontrager Gel, blue = $18

_*YELLOW*_
Cinelli Cork Gel, yellow = $17
Planet Bike Gel, yellow = $17
Lizard Skins DSP 2.5mm, yellow  = $31

_*PURPLE*_
Off The Front Shuade (suede-like), purple = $16
Specialized S-Wrap Roubaix, purple = $25

_*ORANGE*_
Lizard Skins DSP 2.5mm, tangerine orange  = $31

_*BLACK*_
Arundel Cork, black = $17
Off The Front Cyclo-Cross (/ask me/), black = $17
Scott Grip Wrap - /*see note*/ - black (6 available) = $23 ea.
Fizik Microtex w/Bargel pads, black (2 available) = $43 ea.

_*WHITE*_
Cinelli Cork Gel, white = $17
Planet Bike Gel, white = $17
Specialized S-Wrap Roubaix, white = $21
Scott Grip Wrap - /*see note*/ - white (2 available) = $23 ea.

_*GREY*_
Serfas Synthetic Cork, grey = $14
Off The Front Shuade (suede-like), grey = $16
Off The Front/Richard Sachs, grey = $22

+
/*Note: Scott Grip Wrap* is the unique, now 30-year-old bar wrap that’s
still great. Here’s why: The highly stretchable, pliable, rubber-like
material has stayed supple in my workshop, still in great condition. On
the handlebars it has some give, but works wonders when layered over
some older gel/cork tape. It’s a smooth-surface tape, for those who like
their tape smooth. Non-adhesive, Grip Wrap rewraps easily, is washable,
and comes in long-length packages for big handlebars. Back in the 1990s,
it was by far my favorite tape, had it on at least five bikes. So early
this century, when Scott Grip Wrap tape was hard to find but a large
stash became available, I bought it. And I’ve used only a few from that
stash because of this: Scott Grip Wrap came in only three colors: black,
white, grey. And with more bikes than five, my palette has expanded too.
Even so, if you could use a unique black or white tape (I have no grey
to sell) as I’ve described it, consider this./

Re: [RBW] Best grocery pannier? Nice lightweight wool cycling "jacket" or full-zip mid-weight jersey?

2022-01-22 Thread Rusty Click

I've seen that Ortlieb shopper in my LBS. Nice bag, but I make do with a
single rear pannier as a shopper.

It must have lasted all of 3 minutes. I clicked on the link the moment I
saw the email update, but it was already gone. Probably for the best
because it would have looked awfully silly sitting next to my orange
susie. Congratulations to whoever got it.

Without wanting to "pile on," i do feel compelled to point out that this
bike had become an instant holy grail, the moment they decided to switch to
caliper brakes. I'm sure the production Charlie will be a good bike and
that they'll sell whatever they make. But, for people like me who already
own caliper-equipped, roadish bikes that are otherwise perfectly adequate,
a charlie with canti brakes had just enough "extra" going for it to
interest me. With caliper brakes, I'll probably just double down on the
Saluki and Ram, and deny myself the joys of the longer bike yet again.
First world problem if there ever was one.

But the Sam Hillborne also started with long reach brakes (like mine)
and eventually made its way to canti/V-brake posts so hopefully CHG goes
the same way and sooner than later.
