Strong second for the Continental Contact Speed. Perfect combo of speed,
comfort, and durability. They're worth double what they sell for.

2022-02-02 Thread Adrianna T
Thanks everyone who responded and who helped out. I didn’t have the chance to
respond to each of you, but I read and appreciated all your messages.

So today I went back with a trusted bike friend and we did the stand over.
Somehow, this bike frame is a fit. Even though I am 5’5, I think my shorter
torso helps with the reach.

I will spend the next couple of weeks building it up with the help of some
friends here in San Francisco, who will be helping me pick and locate parts.

I will update my progress and post the finished product at some point.

[RBW] A few comments on the aesthetics of my new Homer

2022-02-02 Thread John G.
My Homer complete arrived today, a few days after my erstwhile Roadeo began
its journey back to its previous owner. This is the first time I bought a
complete build from Riv, and the experience was excellent. I haven't really
put any miles on the Homer, but in honor of New Bike Day, I wanted to share
a few notes on its looks. Some background: I've owned a few Rivs
(Hunqapillar, Atlantis, Quickbeam, Roadeo) and I wish I had kept every one
I've sold. The Roadeo was fantastic, but a bit small. The Atlantis was
great, but it wasn't a Roadeo. The Quickbeam I still own. I've always been
a bit overly precious about the Made in Taiwan frames, and wrongly assumed
they would never look as nice as a MUSA Riv. Man, I was wrong.

Anyway!
- The compact geometry and long chainstays look really beautiful and
balanced in person. I've never been much of a fan of sloping top tubes, but
it really looks great on the Homer. The proportions just work.
- The paint is far and away the best I've ever seen on a production Riv.
Way, way better than the paint on my Waterford Atlantis and Roadeo. It's
just...lustrous. It feels almost lit from within. Pics do not do it justice.
- The build quality is superlative.

More on how it rides soon when I get some more miles on it!

I moved to Iowa this year, and am experiencing my first Iowa winter. I
never expected to spend this much time on a trainer. I even signed up for
Zwift. Why is there a bike path inside a volcano?

Anyway, my Panaracer Paselas have a weird spot where the casing joins that
goes thunk-thunk-thunk on the rollers. It's driving me nuts. I don't want
to put a trainer tire on the bike. I want to believe that I'm going to go
ride outside again sometime before the end of time.

What are the favored 26 inch road-ish tire favorites these days? I have had
and disliked Schwalbes. My last set of Marathon Supremes picked up an
ungodly array of laceration-inducing, afternoon-ruining, sharp objects. I
was quite pleased with the Panaracers until I started riding inside. My
downstairs neighbors are probably unhappy with the thunk-thunk-thunk, too.
It definitely scares the cat. I'm on an MUSA Atlantis and could go up to
about 40mm with my fender setup. Ideas?

2022-02-02 Thread Richard Rose
If you can find a dealer for SQ Labs I would check them out. At the very least
you can give their website a look & order their free fit kit. I did the fit
kit, figured out my suggested size & preferred riding position & found the
recommended saddle. Then I stumbled into a used one. It is the most comfortable
saddle I have used in 45 years of cycling. I know everyone is different but I
would tell anyone to give them a try. I was really tempted to give a Brooks a
try (based on looks alone) on my Clem but did not want to risk the $$$ when I
had a saddle I liked so much.

I used a wider Brooks saddle that was "pre-softened" and came with a

I tend to like the wider top of the Brooks for more upright city riding.

[RBW] Re: What saddles are women using on their Riv mixtes?

2022-02-02 Thread Ryan

When I ordered my mixte from Riv late 2015 , I got the Brooks Select B-17
model.

Linda, I definitely hear you about baggy shorts catching on the nose of the
saddle and I've done that more than once ; not a problem with a saddle
cover in wet weather however. Not too much of an issue when I wear those
Levi commuter shorts and I feel I really should acquire some more of those
shorts; that gusset helps although a Google search reveals that I might be
SOL .

That being said, I did use Avocet touring gel saddles in the late eighties
but got to dislike them. I did like the Avocet racing saddle specced with
the X0-1, however. Since 1997 I've been using Brooks B-17 Standards and the
fancier ones, and I have an old Ideale 90 on my PX-10 , equivalent to the
old Brooks professionals. I had a woman's model B-17 that I didn't like(too
short, too wide) , and since it was in good shape, sold it to a list
member. Aside for baggy shorts catching on the nose I do like B-17's a lot
. I feel like the leather used on the new B-17's is not as robust as older
models...as a matter of fact my early 70's Ideale is still in terrific
shape with minimal maintenance. I remember when I had my Peugeot sitting in
the bedroom under the south-facing window, I noticed the saddle looked dry,
and smeared Vaseline over it , because that was what I had available. My
son was just a baby then , hence the Vaseline.

Good luck in your search!

[RBW] MUSA baggies on RIV site

2022-02-02 Thread Joe Mullins
I just noticed that the RIV site has S, M and XL baggies back up! Get ‘‘em
while they last.

And FWIW, I’ve never in my life gotten compliments on my pants and I got 3 the
first time I wore mine to work. They are the most comfortable pants I own, on
and off the bike.

[RBW] Re: What saddles are women using on their Riv mixtes?

2022-02-02 Thread lconley
Yes, the B-68 is out of production, but I buy 2 or 3 brand new ones a year,
they are out there - eBay usually and Bike Inn just had some a month or so
ago. There is a brand new B-68 Imperial (with the laces) on eBay right now
for an obscene price. I offered a $100 for it, which was rejected
immediately. I have quit buying though - I have them on most of by bikes
now. Once I tried a B-68 and decided it was the saddle for me, I kept an
eye out for them.
I also have some Rivet Loveland saddles, which are basically the same size
as the B-68 and have chrome rails. FYI - Rivet Saddle Works is owned and
run by a woman if that is of interest.

Speaking for all humans who have had to search and search for saddles that
work for them: Once you've found a saddle that works, stop caring what it
looks like. If you are sitting on it, you aren't looking at it! :)

Re: [RBW] What saddles are women using on their Riv mixtes?

2022-02-02 Thread JAS
Hi Linda! I have used many different saddles over the years including
Avocet and several Terry models. I was never comfortable! When I
discovered Selle Anatomica, it changed everything. It's the only saddle I
ride now and have them on my Bike Friday with drop bars (touring bike) and
both the Platy and Clem L. I've always had the model with the steel rails
(X1) and decided to get the newer version (X2) with the aluminum frame for
my Platy. OOPS! The rail length is shorter on the X2 and I couldn't get
enough set-back. Rather than replace the seat-post, I ordered another X1
and am very happy with it.

Check out their website; they often have returns or seconds on their sale
page under "garage sale."

If you're interested, I'd sell you my X2 (tan color "tool leather with
silver rivets") for $100 plus shipping. I installed it, rode it for 10
miles and removed it from the bike so it's essentially brand new. The
underside has been waterproofed with SA saddle sauce, per manufacturer's
directions. I don't know the geometry of your bike so I can't comment on
whether you'd have the same set-back issue that I had. Contact me off-list
if interested.

[RBW] What saddles are women using on their Riv mixtes?

2022-02-02 Thread Linda G
I am curious about this because I have tried different saddles on my
non-Riv (but similar) lugged steel Velo Orange mixte. What I am looking for
may not exist but someone may know of or be using a saddle I haven't run
across. I've tried a Brooks B17s, Terry Cite-x and an old Avocet women's
touring saddle. The honey brown B17s looks the best but is just not that
comfortable. The slippery finish and flared side skirts seem to be part of
the problem. I don't really want to punch holes in the skirts and try to
tie it together like some people do. The Cite-x is about the size of the
Brooks and quite comfortable but looks like an overstuffed sofa. I don't
mind the modern look of the Terry touring saddles I have on my other 2
bikes, including a Roadini, but I just don't like the look of the Cite-x.
The touring saddles are a little too narrow for the mixte. I'm not
interested in the Brookes with springs. If the Brooks Cambium came in a
short version I would try that. Normal length saddles feel unsafe for me
since I catch clothing like baggy shorts on the nose or it just makes
getting on and off the bike more difficult. Any experiences or thoughts?

Paul Racer, from Tektro R559, and I will be replacing the front brake with
a Paul Racer also, when some spare parts arrive. I would like to be able to
use 38’s even if I have to take the fenders off, as 650b / 32s are such a
hard size to find. I got the current tires from Blue Lug in Japan.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 55cm Hillborne PRICE DROP

2022-02-02 Thread John Bokman
Riv has changed their sizing on these (and other) frames over the years.
This looks to be the first gen Sam because the headtube is solid orange -
not cream accent. Meaning, the 60cm frame is quite a bit bigger than the
current 58cm frame. Unless I'm mistaken, it would correlate more closely to
the now 62cm frame.

I owned a 2009 60cm frame (solid orange, no cream accent) and found it too
big (long). In retrospect the 56cm (next size down) would have been
perfect. I "know" this, because I now ride a 58cm Sam (roughly the "same"
size of the old 56) that is "perfect".

[RBW] FS: Some wool

2022-02-02 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I have a few things to pass along.
Link to Pictures

First is a Stormy Kromer hat in Partridge Plaid. Size is 7 3/8. I never
took to this style of cap in practice, but I like the idea of them. Some
wear, but not a ton. $25 shipped.

Next is a red Rivendell possum wool beanie. I bought this for my partner,
but her skin is too sensitive and gets itchy. Worn a couple of times around
the house, maybe once to work. My receipt says the color is Pumpkin. $20
shipped

Last is a pair of Swobo merino wool polo shirts. I LOVED Swobo! They had
such cool stuff. I wore a pair of these shirts as my only tops across the
whole USA. I lost one in Idaho and went the rest of the trip with one and a
free Adventure Cycling shirt. I bought these as the company was closing
down, but the colors were too light and my nipples showed too much and I
was self-conscious about it. One still has the tag, the other was worn
briefly, both are wrinkly from being in a box. There is a tiny little run
on the back tail area of the one without tags. Both are XXL's, made in
Fiji. The thickness is about the same as the current Riv wool tops from
Australia. $50 for the pair shipped.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 55cm Hillborne PRICE DROP

2022-02-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Demand comes and goes. I recall trying to sell my first-gen SH frameset,
and this with lowrider brazeons added to enhance value, and getting no
interest at all on this or the boblist. I finally had my brother sell it in
CA. Then, wait a bit, and SHs posted for sale are snapped up.

$2,900 does seem a bit high from the other offer prices I dimly recall
seeing.

Your Hillborne looks great. I am in the market for one but in a larger
size. If your's was a 58 I'd be all over it.

I do see there is a 60cm on Ebay with a starting bid of $2200.00. I am a
little confused about that size tho as the chart I have shows a 58 and then
a 62. I confess I haven't been following the Sams as closely as some on
this list have, and so I don't have a good grasp on the heritage. Rivendell
does seem to refine the bikes as the years go on. I noticed the current
generation as shown on their website has different seat stay connections as
yours.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/165308900740?hash=item267d2da584:g:qd4AAOSwF0Vh9upF

You might follow it to see where the bidding ends up to get an idea of what
they bring there.

Good luck.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 55cm Hillborne PRICE DROP

2022-02-02 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I hope you find a buyer, Ahmed.
I hope folks realize that the Hillborne was sort of the bike that started
the whole modern era of Rivendells, as I don't feel like the Hillborne gets
as much regard as the newer, evolved models. The Bomba came first as a 6
degree upsloping tubed bike, but the Hillborne was the first of the Taiwan
expanded geometry bicycles that have come to exemplify Rivendell (this is
according to my fuzzy memory). It was meant to be a do all, beat it up,
ride it like crazy, never repaint it (I recall grant saying he hoped nobody
would ever repaint one), and pass it down to your children bike. I honestly
think anyone looking for a Riv and fits this 55cm Hillborne couldn't find a
better bicycle. I have had a super secret 56cm double TT Waterford
Hillborne since 2011 and it is a never sell for me. It was my primary
touring bicycle for a number of years, also commuter, shopper, and do all
bicycle. It can use drops or uprights. Folks seem to want a Riv mixte or
droptube, and I have had both and sold them both because I never actually
used the lower tube for stepping "in" to the bicycle, I still throw my leg
over, and with the expanded geometry of the Hillborne, you don't have to
worry about standover anyway.
Also, and this is again only my experience, I never got along with the long
wheelbase that the newer Riv's have. I much prefer the ride of my old style
Atlantis, Hillborne, and Simpleone.
I hope this helps anyone on the fence.

Re: [RBW] Shoes for winter riding

2022-02-02 Thread Den John
My two (€) cents:

I ordered a pair of Five Ten Trail Cross GTX because I was planning a ride
in the snow on the Belgian High Fens (Hoge Venen).
They didn't turn up on time, so I made do with what I already had for
footwear: Specialized Rime MTB shoes, knee length sealskinz socks, and
Endura Neoprene overshoes. It worked OK: we were out for about 5 hours with
a café stop half way, and I only really noticed cold feet towards the end.
It was about -3°c up there, there was snow fall but not much wind.

The Five Tens have since turned up and I've used them for a couple of
commutes (30km each way). They seem OK so far, but it's not been especially
cold or wet and certainly not snowy. They are one of the few flat pedal
winter shoes out there (Vaude do something similar). Note that there seems
to be a non-GTX version of the Trail Cross.

I also looked at Vans MTE shoes, some of them seem to have flat enough
soles for cycling. https://www.vans.eu/mte.html Has anyone tried them?

Cheers,
Johnny

Well, if global warming fails to appear and we get nucular winter instead,
I'll look for an updated pair. As things stand now, we here in high desert
ABQ are lucky if we get a couple of decent snows per year, and rarely get
more than a week of lows low enough for wearing my old pair.

Tho" 4" snow predicted for later today, and low of 5* Thurs night! I
hope to ride in the snow, but will stay inside until it warms up to at
least mid teens.
