Andrew,
Rivendell has the 62cm Atlantis in stock in case you can’t find a trading

Great turnout with such cool bikes! My wife has that same red Soma Buena Vista
mixte and I’ve always thought it would be right at home amongst a crowd of

I love the black Hunqapillar, I've seen another one around here in years
past (maybe it was a Bombadil) with full racks and lights..so cool.

Thanks for all the pics Riv Ambassador Leah, it looks like you guys (and

This is Max. He came from Ann Arbor and brought us a Quickbeam to admire.
Max is quick on his Quickbeam. When I realized we were going to be late

He doesn’t even ride with his hands on his handlebars.

Ryan (Muskegon, MI) brought a giant purple Nobilette. His saddle sits at

Josh (Grand Rapids, MI) works for Velocity! He has a custom-color Atlantis

limestone dust and now his chain squeaks. He was a good sport.

Ben has a custom orange Rivendell. He has lots of bikes, several are Rivs,
and when I asked if this was his favorite he said, “It is my first.” He
built it as a single speed, so I said I would ride mine in a single gear
(the hardest) for the whole ride in solidarity, but I had to shift once on

each a dozen eggs from his chickens. He changed into clean clothes for

Steve came all the way from Chicago and brought his very tall Homer. That

This is Paul (Kalamazoo), who goes by Doc. He is a real doctor, a retired
emergency room physician, and this pretty Appaloosa is his retirement gift

Dennis (I didn’t catch what city he drove in from) brought a silvery
Appaloosa that we all thought looked fantastic with its hammered Honjo

Here is the Lone Wolf, Marc Irwin! I think he smiled so well for the

with. I usually see him on his Sam, but the Hunq is his favorite. All
Marc’s parts fall off or break eventually. He rides thousands of miles in

That looks like a lot of fun.
Leah, you could an ambassador for Riv who travels around and organizes
these sorts of rides.
I doubt that sort of position exists…but still.

[RBW] Re: 56+ before 55!

2022-07-16 Thread Ray Varella
That’s a really beautiful area Drew.
I was down that way for work on Thursday and pulled over near Crystal
Springs to take a call.
While I was sitting there I watched a Bald Eagle come up from the reservoir
with a freshly caught fish.
He/she circled for several loops gaining altitude and then headed north.
I don’t know if there is a nesting pair there but this bird had full adult
plumage.
Keep your eye out for any sightings, they are such majestic creatures.

Lots of nice shots in your album, thank you for sharing and wishing you
good health.

A little tip for the others, you can usually avoid the crowds at Alice’s
Restaurant by taking a seat over near the group W bench.
Yes, there really is a group W bench there.

Since Marc's Hunqapillar is now black, my gray/orange 54cm is even more
rare! His was the only other one I know about, although one of the 54
prototypes has the orange accents, so it may be out there somewhere.

To be honest, I've long thought of changing mine to black. I'm not big on
conspicuous appearances and prefer a bike that is neutral and generally
goes unnoticed.

[RBW] Southwest Michigan Rivendell Ride ✅

2022-07-16 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
We had our Rivendell Ride today, and I was so happy that we had 10
riders! We rode the KalHaven Trail, a rail trail that spans the 34 miles
between Kalamazoo and South Haven. Eight of the ten riders brought
Rivendells, most had seen a lot of miles. The oldest bike was the ‘97 or
‘98 orange Custom, and the newest was my 2020 Platypus.

Here is the lineup, alphabetized:
2 Appaloosas
1 Atlantis (in custom green paint)
1 Custom orange Rivendell
1 Homer
1 Hunq
1 Platypus
1 Quickbeam

And one Nobilette and a Soma mixte.

It was great weather and good company, and we continued our fellowship at a
local brewery post-ride. It was nice for Marc and me to meet everyone in
real life and admire their bikes. We are planning our next ride for fall
colors on the White Pine Trail. I bet it’s as pretty as it sounds.

Photos in the next post, so wacky Google Groups doesn’t get the opportunity
to turn all my photos sideways.

[RBW] FS: Shimano Deore XT M750 trigger shifters 3x9

2022-07-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
Me: Got tasked with liquidating my dear friend Juel-Ann's flat bar road
bike

You: Just grabbed a Rosco Platy and are starting to plan your build

Up for sale is a practically new set of 3x9 Index trigger shifters.
Juel-Ann's flat bar road bike was a monstrous amalgam of really nice
individual parts, and that's why I'm parting out her bike.

These Deore XT M750 trigger shifters are ~25 years old and they succumbed
to the one well-known mechanical issue that normally befalls old Shimano
trigger shifters: the factory grease hardens up and the internals stop
returning the way they are supposed to. Fortunately I've fixed this
numerous times, and I fixed it on these. The fix is to flush them with
light weight lube to wash the old grease away. Consider them "factory
refurbished".

These will definitely index the Deore RD that Rivendell sells. I don't
know for sure if the front shifter will index a Skeleton Key FD, but I
would not be surprised if it worked out.

Seems like $80 plus shipping is the going rate on ebay.
Let's offer them at $50 shipped.

For the past few years, I've tried to ride my age or more on or about
my birthday (this Sunday, the 17th, a.k.a. "World Emoji Day!"). Although
not as impressive as crossing the country, it was still a good ride today.

In 2017, instead of riding 50+ miles for my 50th birthday, I spent my
birthday in the hospital due to a bad reaction to Xeloda, my first
chemotherapy drug. Oh, did I mention that in April of 2017 I found out
 that
I had adenocarcinoma of the descending colon? I had the colectomy at the
end of May, and started chemo at the end of June (and re-started it at the
end of July with a different drug). That'll put a damper in your riding
 plans any day!

 I was able to do a 53 mile ride before turning 51 in 2018, and a 55
mile ride before turning 52 in 2019. I found my fitness dropping
unexpectedly in 2020, but eventually figured out that it was due to
 working
from home and no longer walking or biking to work (which is only 2 miles
each way, but it adds up). I added a neighborhood walk to my morning
routine and improved my fitness, but wasn't able to get in a 53+ mile ride
for 2020. Then, in November 2020 (Friday the 13th, of course) I found out
that my cancer had returned in a single tumor in my liver. That (along
 with
1/4 of my liver) was removed at the end of December.

2021 was the year of regrowing my liver, so no long ride that July! I
still got in some medium rides, but didn't make 54KM, much less 54 miles
 for any of them.

I set out this morning to do a variation on the same 53 and 55 mile
ride I had done in 2018 and 2019, just with a little more at each end. For
the locals, this is Cañada road to the end, then meander through Woodside,
Portola Valley and Los Altos Hills, then Foothill Expressway/Steven's
Canyon Road and turn around at the Lakeshore Picnic Area then home. It
totaled 56.62 miles! Eventually, I'll have to switch to kilometers.

For more pics of the Red Riv, here are all of my Flickr photos with the tag
"Rivendell" (I confirmed these are all public and don't require an account

The jersey is from Pearl Izumi, from maybe 2008-2010? They had just stopped
making Sesame Street jerseys, so some were available for cheap from the PI
factory outlet, and I got one of the last in Medium. I also have matching
socks, and Cookie Monster socks too!

Keep pushing. I have a few years on you, 2 back surgeries, a replaced
knee. I had to take 10 years off after my second back surgery then covid
came and I started riding again. Of course I sold my custom, my AR and 1
of my Bleriot by then. I had 2 years of riding and had a mishap this year
and have been off the bike for 2 months, my other knee, so rest and ice.
My mileage and speed have decreased but as I am approaching 71 I will be
just fine with my 12-17 mile rides when I get back on the bike.

Sorry you’ve had to go through your medical issues, never easy. Ride every
day you can and take comfort as you roll down the road. A truly beautiful
bike, I hope you enjoy it for many more years.

[RBW] Re: 56+ before 55!

2022-07-16 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
A beautiful, red Rivendell. My FAVORITE. Thank you for sharing your story;
this nurse feels for you and admires your resolve. What is the story on
this bike? How old is it? It’s a custom, so there are certainly interesting
details about it that I’d be interested in knowing, if you’d care to share
them.

Re: [RBW] Rosco Platy!

2022-07-16 Thread Eric Daume
I finally fought off my cheapskate side and placed my pre-order. 60cm in
purple.

I may end up building it up as a fixed gear--the only spare rear wheel I
have in my inventory is a WI ENO hubbed wheel, currently un-eccentric'd. I
would need to re-eccentric it to make it work. Or just buy a geared wheel.

Joe,
Condescending? Never. Ill get that measurement if can remember to do it before
I load the Platy on the rack this morning. And it will, of course, be wrong but
hopefully you’ll see a number in there that makes sense.
